I owned a mid 1990s Toyota Hilux ute that had 545,000kms when she finally died. Oil changes, brakes, air-filters, and the odd battery is all I ever had to do.
My mechanic bought it off me, chucked another engine in it, and she's still running, apparently.

In your expert opinion would using an additive such as Risolone or Marvel Mystery Oil possibly extend the life of the oil?

    • @tardeliesmagic
      @tardeliesmagic Месяц назад +7

@@jamesmitchell1780 NO. If you use an additive like that in your oil or any other then you're not using the right oil/not a good enough oil. Always, always use good oil with a decent filter, never the cheap ones. Here in the UK many use low quality oil & low quality filter which is not good even for 5,000 miles! Keep doing that on each service over the years then engine will not last. Many owners here want cheap motoring but regrets it when the timing change fails or other issues happen. Many car part stores sell cheap filters here. Good oil & filter no more than 5,000 miles is my strong advice or you'll get sludge & piston rings issues....then the catalytic converter gets all that bad stuff through it!

I guess I'm fortunate. I have a 2 liter Ecoboost engine in a 2013 Ford Fusion. It has been so reliable. 250,000 km and still going strong. I change the oil with high-quality synthetic and use an equally high-quality oil filter. Oil changes are done when the automatic indicator tells me to do it. The other thing I've done is make sure I use an oil flush additive before each oil change. I've been happy with the car.

True while some EcoBoost engines are crap, if you take reasonable care of most of them, they can last a very long time. Case in point, my brother in law’s 2015 Focus ST just turned 595000 miles with the most severe repair being a water pump replacement at 282000 miles. It has the original turbo and clutch.

@Spymell Depends on how well the motor has been maintained, the quality of oil in it, the environment, and your IQ. Judge oil change intervals on oil condition rather than mileage. The book probably says every 6k to 8k miles. Treated properly, you can easily go 12k to 15k between oil changes. Drive it like an idiot, and you burn a quart of oil with every tank of gas.

Experienced plenty of Pentastar 3.6 liter engines with valve train issues. Experienced the timing chain and guide issues with BMW vehicles and GM 5.3 engines with collapsed lifters. Nissan CVTs are also a total joke and dealerships have rows of them in the shop for potential swaps. Many modern cars on the market are less reliable as they are forced to engineer engines that prioritize strict emissions standards set by the EPA over performance and reliability.

All problems with the DPF are related to the driving style, no one warms up the engine enough to start the regeneration, because they drive short distances, you don't have to get in the car if you can walk a hundred meters
This EW garbage is ideal for such owners, and even better when the cars become smarter than the owners to maintain themselves.

Dont chintz by using 'economy' engine lube oil.
Standard recommendation for EVERY engine made after ~2010:
If 90% of your driving is at steady state (cruise control ON) change the oil AT OR BEFORE 2/3rds of the mgr. changeout recommendation.
If the preponderance of driving is short interval 'stop & go' (city) driving, change the oil at HALF the recommended interval.
The cost of 'early' oil changes is significantly LESS than an engine 'rebuild' or replacement ... or a new vehicle.
THE PROBLEM is that most engines is the use of LOOSE enginepiston rings that foster LOTS of engline blow-by of the combustion gases past the piston rings which DILUTES the engine oil VISCOSITY. over time !!!!!

The Caddilac Northstar engine is not as bad as people make it out to be. I bought a Caddilac STS from a drug auction and I put it on the road as a taxi. It held up surprisingly well with proper maintenance. I drove the car an average of 3,200 miles per week for 6 years before it was destroyed in a crash with a drunk driver. I was very adamant about the maintenance being done on the car. The oil got changed every Friday and the transmission was serviced every 50,000 miles. The main reason people didn't like the Northstar is because they were too lazy to properly maintain their vehicles. By properly maintaining the engine my STS had over 700,000 miles on it when the crash happened.

the engines quoted with high oil mileage changes is due to specific euro oils, which have very long life. If you live outside the EU you wont get these oils easily due to price and many factories just want to manufacture their lower quality oils. the reason for euro standards is environmental, as longer lasting oils means less environmental impact. SInce other countries dont care the oils you get there dont last long so you have to change your oil more frequently. Different oils have different ages. Also if you idle that counts as miles too.

Guys stop thinking about milage as a interval for oil change. Some people do 5k in 2 months or bus drivers in 1 month or even a week. Trip to Poland and back thats give you 2-2.5k miles so in two weeks you have that milage. I have to be an idiot to change oil every week or two.

There are some misinformation along the engines especially about diesels... Diesels require 5000-7500 miles for regular oil and about 10000miles for full synthetic oils recommended by manufacturers... Which are pretty optimistic recommendations...
Diesel engines by their working principle require more often oil changes especially if used in city traffic...
That is not a reliability issue that is how engines are maintained...
Same thing goes for gas engines or lpg engines...
Reliability comes in once regularly maintained engines failed due to production.
Any engine will fail if you use cheap and under qualified fuel with lots of additives, manufacturers cannot design an engine for the worst and expect it not to fail... :)

Rover's V6 engine didn't make the list then - prone to Head Gasket failure. Often Cheaper to scrap the car.
Kids on computers not understanding how engines really work is the biggest cause of engine failures.

  • @messmerjos

I had to turn it off after the 4g yota engine. This dude literally took a list of failures on engines and averaged the failure mileage. Truth. The na N62 BMW engine is great. The Northstar can't keep fluids in it but it is very common to see 100k on a Northstar. Now the final. The renesis. If you don't drive the rx8s as intended, the engines last 40-50k and usually a little brake fluid solves that. Most go 80k+ before having severe issues and I've seen them go 140k plus. Last the 4gre. That engine is great the issue was the 10k oil change interval Toyota issued when the engine came out.

The fiat 1.3 multijet is one of the most reliable engines made by fiat and is used on opel too.
I think someone are confuse when speack of the fiat 1.3 multijet, the same block is used in the opel and is that modified engine by opel that is known for break very easy, because fiat when design the engine choose a complete group of periferic pieces and the opel took that engine and instead of go as the fiat, change everything with is thing and ideas damaging completly the engine.
Its the opel derivative who have the problems not the fiat one.

I always changed my car oil every 12000 km, max 15000 km, my car's never broke..
An other thing to do is to heat up the engine before moving, never press the accelerator before heat up.

Of course, all these engine problems go away with EVs-just to be replaced by other concerns and problems.
The only sound benefit of EVs appears to be that the drive-train technology was refined by 1890 and hasn't gotten much more complicated, despite Elron Mush's blather.

'Car Care Clueless'⁉️Saab developed technology found in most engines today including Direct Ignition (Distributor-less), anti-knock for lower-grade non-premium fuel (APC), turbo wastegate electronic control, and ignition spark control optimization (Trionic). Variable compression engine was going to be next... Most of this tech was about a decade ahead of it's time.

All problems with the engines can be traced back to the current gasoline where a lot of methanol is mixed to be better for the environment. What is not taken into account are the consequences that all environmental gains through repairs are nullified, technicians do not recommend 98 ron gasoline for nothing if you do not drive too many kilometers with your car

Lately, many videos campaign against buying European cars. While the motive is unclear, car manufacturers should promote their strengths without criticizing trusted brands like Land Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Rolls-Royce. These brands have earned global trust over decades. Focus on quality and let time prove your worth.

If you halve the service interval in oil changes your engine should last a lot longer, timing chains are not meant to last the life of an engine they to have service intervals of around 130,000 miles, most of this is BS.
