Expedition M196 Folge 9 / Episode 9: Die Analyse der Sedimentproben

In Folge 9 der RUclips-Serie über die Expedition M196 in den Golf von Korinth untersucht das Team die Sedimentproben, die der erneute Einsatz des Schwerelots in Folge 8 mit zurück an Bord gebracht hat. Dafür teilen die Wissenschaftler:innen die Sedimentkerne in zwei Hälften - eine geht an die Sedimentolog:innen und die andere wird direkt an Bord analysiert. Für ihre Analysen benötigen die Forschenden Porenwasser, das sie mit Filterkerzen (Spritzen) und durch Pressen aus dem Sediment gewinnen. Im Labor messen sie Nährstoffe und bestimmen unter anderem die Alkalinität und den Salzgehalt. Teile der Proben werden auch luftdicht verschlossen und für spätere Analysen an Land gesichert.

Die Expedition M196 findet in Kooperation mit der Universität Malta @universityofmalta, der University of Hawai'i @UHmagazine, dem Bundesamt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) @GeoChannelBGRLBEG, der Universität Patras @UniversityOfPatras, dem HELLENIC CENTRE FOR MARINE RESEARCH (HCMR) @EMBRC und dem GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel statt.
Die Expedition ist Teil des Projekts SMART, einer europäischen Helmholtz-Partnerschaftsinitiative.

In episode 9 of the RUclips series about the M196 expedition to the Gulf of Corinth, the team analyses the sediment samples that the gravity corer brought back on board in episode 8. To do this, the scientists split the sediment cores into two halves - one goes to the sedimentologists and the other is analysed directly on board. For their analyses, the researchers need pore water, which they extract from the sediment using filter cartridges (syringes) and by pressing. In the laboratory, they measure nutrients and determine the alkalinity and salt content, among other things. Some of the samples are also sealed airtight and saved for later analyses on land.
