  • This video will demonstrate how to change the battery in a 2014 and newer Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra. This process will be the same for Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, and GMC Yukon and Denali. This video will apply to all 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 models.
The battery size group is 94R.
While you are working on your GM vehicle your cup holders could probably use a good disassembly and cleaning! For disassembly instructions see my video here:

Nice video, I just changed the battery on my Chevy Silverado 2014 by my self, it wasn't a big deal I have done that before on my other cars, but I was scared by the auto parts store and the dealer when they told me that only a certified technician can do it. But after I watched your video I realized that I can do it and I save almost $100 .CA dollars and 2 hours of waiting .
    Gracias Amigo.... 👌

That was a great video and I thank you for making this available to the public. First off, was surprised this battery went bad. Less than 40,000 miles but four years old. Texas heat, and not driving truck regularly must be tough on battery. When I opened hood, I thought the same thing, thanks a lot GM. After trying for a few minutes, I figured that I'd check to see if anyone else had the same problem. Thank you very much!!! You just save a lot of unneeded aggravation.

Thank you for posting this. My 2014 GMC Sierra battery started failing. I went to Autozone and they crawdadded every which way they could to say it wasn't the battery and it was fine since it said it could possibly take 45 minutes to install. Bought a new battery, found this video and had it installed in 20 minutes. Would have most definitely had a problem if I hadn't watched this. Thanks again !

Don't ask a parts store to work on you're vehicle. It's not their job. They are parts suppliers, not techs. If something goes bad, or breaks, then they are not liable. They are not trained techs, ase certified or whatever. Any shop can do this, or a car owner can do this.

I wish I could have seen this video (two) days ago, my battery died and I went to (2) separate autozone stores, the first one couldn't diagnose that my battery was no good, the second one was able to tell that a couple of cells were no good, meaning I need a new battery, it took 45 minutes with my aid for the salesman to remove the old battery and install a new one. Since I watched your video, I believe I can do the job myself in less time. Great video dude!!!

Great video and it made my crappy day a little easier. Still, I would add to watch the thumbs while removing the plastic cover of the distribution block. I punctured my thumb enough to bleed through two bandaids.
Obviously an engineer did not think about changing a battery in an off road vehicle...

oh OUNCH! It was defiantly on there tighter than I expected. What amazes me is that on the drivers side front there is an empty space for a second battery that is easy to get to but for some crazy reason they put the battery in the hard to reach back spot while leaving the easy spot empty??? Sorry you had a ruff day Mark but glad I could help out a little.

Just had mine replaced this morning on 2015 GMC Sierra. Luckily the auto parts store replaced for free and the guy was very patient and knowledgeable. I helped him out a lot but we should have looked at your video first. He just kept saying "It shouldn't be this hard, it just shouldn't be this hard". THANK YOU for posting this. The tough part was lifting the battery out. We did NOT think to turn the battery. GREAT TIP!!! We actually loosened one of the bolts holding the overflow resevoir, enough where it would "rock" forward and out of the way to allow clearance for the battery to be pulled right out.
Why oh why would GM design such crappy location for high maintenance item like the battery? It was like a jigsaw puzzle. Ok what do you take off next and next and next. Ridiculous. Also the OEM battery does not have handles. Not sure if all the aftermarket do or not but that definitely helps
Hey GM, the 2nd battery tray for diesels is MUCH easier to get to. Hmmmmm....

You saved me so much time on changing my battery, it was just over 4 yrs old just not holding a charge I guess. Went out and truck would not start I noticed for a couple days now getting harder to start. $170 at autozone for what they say is factory replacement, 5yr Warrantee. would have liked to gotten the 820 cold crank aps but $188 without tax dont think so. Not right now, in two months no issues. Best time saving video so far, GREAT JOB

Thanks for putting this out there. I was halfway through the process and losing hope. Your take was clear and concise, saving me both time and cash. Never had a battery be such a pain on any other vehicle, but dammit it got it done myself for the price of the new battery and only one busted knuckle. Be well.

  • @mountainvisionpublishing5324

Great video, thank you. Especially how to flip the battery around, and how to get the grey plastic cover off the connection block. I used an extender from my socket drive to pry it. I did this change as a kind of emergency, in -24°C weather and in less than 45 minutes. None of the plastic parts broke, although it was a challenge to get the electrical cables (stiff with the cold) to bend enough out to be out of the way to get the old battery out and the new one in. Tying them off to the corner strut on the opposite side of the vehicle helped. When you put the vertical strut back in, there is a circular guide to thread it through. I also found it unnecessary to remove the positive jumper. Accessing that nut, even with a deep socket, is a pain as there is not enough clearance for the socket to seat properly and grab the nut.

Glad I did. Thanks! I removed what was the original battery from a 2014 GMC Sierra and replaced it with a new Motomaster Group 94R that I got at Canadian Tire .. paid a little extra for the additional cranking amps for winter operation in Alberta .. total price with the $20 core fee returned was around $200 CDN.

Thanks - The Video was very helpful for removal of the power distribution block and removing and installing the battery. I replaced the battery on a 2016 GMC 1500 Sierra yesterday and your video was very helpful. I strongly suggest insulating both the Positive and Negative terminal posts of the battery before rolling the battery on its side to reduce the risk of electrical arcing should the battery posts contact the frame and/or any metal. I used a piece of clear plastic tygon tubing with Scotch 33 electrical tape to insulate the battery posts on both the old and new battery prior to removal/installation.

Albert...one of the best videos I have seen. I have to change my daughters 2016 Tahoe battery today and had no idea how to get it out. The worst part of this job will be purchasing a new battery on Black Friday! One note of over caution, it might pay to remove any jewelry such as rings or metal banded watches. As in welding, if the jewelry were to short between hot and ground the results could be an instantaneous burn. I have seen it happen. Not pleasant! Again, thank you so much for the great video.

I watched your video twice then went out and changed out the battery like a pro. I was able to get the cross brace out without detaching the vertical brace by simply loosening it at the cross brace. The battery also came out without turning it on its side. I used a battery carrier to get a hold of it. I positioned the carrier slightly forward of center so that the front would come up first. Thank you so much.

Also, no need to remove the positive jumper from the distribution box. I just left it hooked up and moved the whole assembly aside. You do have to remove a plastic wire clamp to move that distribution box far enough away.

It's bad enough that a truck sells for 50K but they make it so hard to do what before was simply a 5 min job. All the while having a empty spot for a battery where they use to be in the front left corner of the truck. I have always had a GMC but this could be the last one!

I had to take the battery side nut off the post that holds down the coolant reservoir in order to tip the battery up and out (10mm, long-ass extension). Not the worst job I've ever had to do, but more of a pain in the balls than it needs to be, for sure. My 2015's battery died and the walls were bulged at precisely 37,000 miles and 37 months, FWIW. Just in time :)
On a side note, that distribution block is actually the bee's knees when you're adding stuff like amps and such. No need to make fancy-dancy from-to's and adapter rigs.

Great video. Thank you. For a Yukon 2018, I had no other than to unscrew the coolant deposit in front of the battery; no combination allowed me to get the old battery out.

Thanks so much. Saved my bacon. I would probably still be working on removing the distribution block and squeezing the battery out.

Thanks so much. Like many others, my first thought was WTF! Watched your video and was 20-25 minutes total for the job. I must say that I was able to pull up on front facing part of battery and pull it up and out without putting it on its side. Maybe because I just had my annual rust spray not long ago
and it is super slick and slippery in that area. Was able to insert new battery straight in as well. Thanks again and will passs it forward.

Hey bud, thanks for the video. Yeah, it looked a little overwhelming when I first saw how they have the battery in there. Got it done in about an hour with some beer breaks. 👍

Great video thanks for the post. The battery has handles on the top side that pop up to make the removal and replacement much easier. Cheers.

Great video I was also held up on the distribution block myself I too was afraid of breaking something definitely don’t make cars like they used to

Thank you Scott! The whole time all I could think about was "how much will this cost if I break something". I edited out 10 minuets of me messing with that stupid plastic box and another 10 minutes of me trying to get that battery in an angle that would come out. They definitely don't make them like they use to!

There is a plastic clip on the front of the assembly by the positive terminal and two or three on the back side of the battery. Pry them out a little with a small flat blade screwdriver as you lift the assembly up.

FO REAL! I was expecting to pay $130 for a standard or maybe splurge on a deep cycle for $200 but not $230 for regular battery....
