Adding venom into spider-man 3 was Sony's idea. They pushed it on to Sam who didn't want to do it in the first place. Therefore we came out with a rushed version of venom that was not the best.
I laughed how lame the astroid carrying the symbiote crashed like a lame thump and surprisingly in a city like New York, it wasn't a big deal. I honestly hoped that it would just crawl away preying on normal victims till it ran into Spider-Man and sensed his mighty power which would drive the symbiote desperate to latch on to Peter and when it was time, BAM black Spider-Man.
Yeah, but wouldn’t Sam Raimi as a professional want to put forth the very best product he could. It always struck me as Raimi kind of crossing his arms and pouting. “Sure you can have your stupid Venom! But he’s MY VERSION!” This is coming from a huge fan of Raimi’s work, but I honestly think he got up his own ass a bit with that depiction of many people’s favorite Symbiote.
Yeah, honestly, if they would've made him carnage, it would've probably been a little bit of a better movie. Because c'mon, even the personality of this Eddie Brock Screamed Carnage.
That's gotta be the biggest complimate ever to the studio and Tom Hardy to hear the creator of such an amazing design of Venom said he got his Venom on screen that he drew 30 years ago. Love this podcast!
came to the comments for this.. and it was such a throwaway impression, too. It just came naturally. You definitely can tell they spent at least some time together.
I didn’t necessarily mind how small Venom was within the context of the movie. He looked like a distorted version of Spider-Man. Everything from the suit patterns to the eyes. Him being able to match Spider-Man’s silhouette was a cool twist
Todd McFarlane is a creative and artistic genius. Spawn will forever be my all time favorite character. Waiting over 20 years for the next Spawn movie.... the toys were also the most detailed pieces I have ever seen.
That's an interesting note on Venom's creation that I didn't know about. The reason he's so big is to give the impression that purely hand to hand, you simply cannot beat him. Therefore the hero in question has to find another way of defeating him, hence the weakness to sound and fire.
Even as a 10 year-old kid, my first reaction was "That's not the Venom I know". He has to be jacked, that's part of his intimidation factor, Parker is a scrawny kid and Venom a hulking alpha. True opposites of one another. It's a shame the movie was so rushed, there was/is huge potential there.
@Chris Like I said, true opposites of one another. Beta and Alpha. Batman and Bane are both alphas, both are supposed to be jacked. Sure, Bane was huge in the comics, but as far as I know, the thing most exceptional about him is his intelligence. That's why the Batman & Robin version didn't work. Also, realistic? A bomb blows up in your face, you survive ------->realism? Sandman as tall as a building? Cmon Bruh.
Mo 2k this guy nailed it. Raimi had zero love for venom. He thought venom was a mindless monster and raimi was interested in the human aspect of spidey villians. So what change?the scatter brain who thought having "the brides maids" director do a ghostbusters movie pushed for venom since s he was "cool" and "in" with the kids.
It’s funny, I was also 10 years old when it came out and I knew nothing about Venom beforehand and I thought he looked pretty cool. Little did I know..
As disappointed as I am with Venom in Spider-Man 3, I do understand that it was a creative decision because Venom in that movie was supposed to be like a negative Spider-Man, a what if Peter used his power for wrong doing, unfortunately we don't get enough time with the character for this to come across, however we do get some scenes with Brock that show us he's similar to Peter.
The awkward part is that Topher is a huge fan of Todd's work and even when he was much younger met him and got one of his comics signed at a mall [I think?]. Only to find out many years later for Todd to be disappointed by the version of Venom that a fan ended up playing as. Weird how life goes like that sometimes.
I mean it's not that awkward. BECAUSE Topher was such a fan of Venom, he went into the role knowing he was miscast for it. He still took it because why not?
I just hope people don’t slam Topher. He was just an actor doing his job and he deserves more than being mocked or criticized. I liked him in Spiderman 3. He seemed unhinged and that he could snap at any moment.
I mean he got the scumbag aspect of Brock's character right. Simple miscast if you ask me. They needed a bodybuilder who could've bulked up for later parts of the film, but it's probably hard to find bodybuilders who are also good actors. And if Venom wasn't apart of Raimi's original vision, then there's that aspect too.
@@MOVIESNCOMICS the 2nd issues cover is one of my favorite comic book covers along with Punisher War Journals issue 7 (with Wolverine) and Daredevil issue.... 180 something - (the one where Mephisto sends him to a snowy hell).
I defend the Raimi Venom as this: 1. Sam NEVER wanted Venom. Period. He though Carnage would be a scarier and more psychotic character (in 1&2 the villains were tortured people, so what would Spidy do against pure uncontrolled evil?) 2. Topher Grace could have worked if given more screen time 3. Sony demanded Venom at last minute, so screen time/character development was rushed. 4. The way Venom is portrayed is almost an anti-Spider-man. He’s more stealth and “I’m over here! Now I’m over here! Gotcha bitch!” Which given Raimi’s Evil Dead background, provides some creepy moments. Edit - I would like to say the Carnage stuff I might have accidentally made up through a false memory, either way it would have been cool to see Sam Raimi’s take on Carnage
Daniel Kulchar lies. He thought this was his big break to go from That 70s shows to a big Hollywood actor. But then it failed and his journey ended where it started. 😂 dumbass should stayed as Eric foreman and maybe season 8 wouldn’t have been so shit.
If you check out Spider-Man 3 the game's cast interviews you'll see that Topher understands Eddie and Venom, so the character was basically a victim of the movie in general. Yes the actor could have been different but it wasn't his fault.
The only thing I loved from SM3s venom was the design, (not the size).I loved how the suit was actually Spiderman's suit absorbed by the symbiote and it mimicked the small details like the lines and the tiny circles within the fabric.
Inflating and exaggerating the proportions just a little bit was literally all that was needed and I think would've made the film a lot more forgivable for it's other shortcomings.
@@frofrozztywhy the fcking size.... i wouldve preferred if they made venom even skinnier like in that play test version of venom where he looked and soundes even creepier... not everything single thing has to be 'one-note' which is something Sam Raimi strived for when directing the Spider-Man movies.... Todd McFarlane is a great guy but he's just coming off from just his original work while expecting the same thing which is something Sam Raimi didn't want and i wish Todd acknowledged that
@@godzillazfriction if you read my comment I used the words "inflating and exaggerating", not "make him big!". I also didn't like how one-note McFarland seemed to be about the mass of the character. I merely didn't like how Venom was just exactly proportioned like regular ass Topher Grace, and wished they did remotely anything to make the character read more inhuman and alien. I'm not familiar with that test footage of a "skinny venom" but that sounds awesome, like Zzzxx from the comics.
@@frofrozzty you putting inflating which means that something should increase in size as well as having exaggerating (im assuming) proportions which contributes to his size means in all aspects that you mentioned that, he should've been bigger but not once did i go against saying that he shouldn't be 'big'
It's not Raimi's fault tho he was forced to include a character that he didn't really know or care about into a movie that already had two main villains. Even if he was big it still would've been a mess.

A lot of people said Topher was not buff enough to play Venom. I appreciate that, even though he wanted a hulking Venom as much as anyone, Todd didn't take the stance that it had anything to do with Topher's size. "Venom should GROW as the suit comes on." Yes. 100%
When I was 18 I was working in a little diner in a small town called Buffalo Wyoming and Todd was passing through and stopped to eat near closing time. I was a big fan of Spawn and venom was one of my favorite comic book characters as a kid in the 90s so I was totally stoked! A bunch of my friends always hung out there drinking coffee and whatnot and we all ended up staying for a couple hours after I closed just bullshiting, and we all got a couple autographed things from him. It was one of those things you'll remember forever, and a good memory/story. I found it really ironic that the host here is wearing a Wyoming shirt while speaking to Todd.
@Yowatsapp 05 it's a story about the interviewee that was sparked by ironic coincidence. All of this was stated in the comment. Now maybe you thought it was a lame story or whatever but the coincidence sparked a 20+ year old memory that was a thousand miles from where I am now from my life and I felt like sharing it. Don't like it? keep on scrolling.
I feel like it had to have been a budgetary issue. There was already so much cgi and effects work in that movie that doubling or tripling Venom in size would have been way too expensive.
Yeah, but they used practical effects mixed with CGI so making tiny ass Topher Grace look THAT big with practical effects would've still been challenging.
If Don Heck was still alive (may he rest in peace), I wonder what he would've thought of how Iron Man 3 treated the villain he created to be Iron Man's greatest foe. Venom in Spider-Man 3 was simply a result of someone just not knowing what to do with the character, and Sam Raimi already apologized before the fans for botching him. Mandarin in Iron Man 3 was a result of someone intentionally pooping all over the fans, character, and his history.
@@jamiekelly6851, the Mandarin was described by Iron Man as his most deadliest enemy, and Thor called Mandarin one of the strongest villains he ever had to face. He's without a doubt one of Marvel's best villains. And he was always the main villain in most of the stories he was featured. The only time he was sidelined was in the Act's of Vengeance story. Which made him part of the team of Marvel's most famous supervillains. Give a character like the Mandarin to someone like Christopher Nolan, he'd make him one of the most iconic villains in the history of cinema. It's just that MCU doesn't do villains well, and especially villains that are as profound as the Mandarin.
It’s not the same as visually he still did look like the mandarin when he was in character in the film and at least we still hit a great bad guy in Ironman 3. They tricked everyone with the mandarin and it ended up being the extremis saga instead. Spider-Man 3 tried to make venom and just flat out failed in spectacular fashion. See what I did there ? Was amazing. Sensational even.
@@ZaZa-kp9gt, 1. Kingsley's Mandarin did not look like the comic book Mandarin. Comic book Mandarin is 1.9 m tall, superbly athletic, has a dark long hair, earrings, and a triton-shaped beard. And he's also half-Chinese, half-white. Kingsley is an Indian who grew up in England. 2. Aldrich Killian was not a great bad guy. Sandman in Spider-Man 3 was a better villain than him, and he made more sense too. 3. That's why it sucked and was terrible. 4. The director admitted that the movie sucked. So your witty remarks mean nothing, because nobody's arguing that the movie did a good job with the character. But at least the director admitted it, unlike Shane Black, who keeps lying to himself that he did a good job with the character.
Raimi chose Topher because he wanted like a bizzarro version of Toby, which if you're going for that, Topher is a good choice. Not sure why that was such a priority but at least it explains why he chose not to make him big.
To give credit where it’s due, SM3 Venom was not Topher Grace’s normal build; they really bulked him up and made him considerably larger (definitely larger than Spider-Man). Though it’s a fair point that they didn’t take it far enough. They could have made him a completely CGI character like Sandman, but they opted for an actor in a muscle suit.
When Spider-Man 3 showed Venom and I said “Wow.. this is the counter to Spider-Man ? It’s just a skinny guy” When Venom in his solo movie and he came up and I said “Now that’s my Venom !”
I personally prefer the symbiote effects in Spider Man 3. I agree that Venom should've been bigger, he's supposed to be a graceless character. But in regards to the symbiote itself, the one seen in Spider Man 3 feels a lot more tangible. It moves like an amorphous spider, like it holds mass. The one in Venom just looks like CG goop that sloshes around. Now, obviously I understand that the symbiotes in the comics and original animations are more liquid in nature, but I truly got the impression that Raimi's symbiote was an alien being.
@Brandon Brooks was a failure, mostly because michael j white cant act for shit. john liqazamo(SP?) character that ate the real maggots.. i remember him more than spawn.
Because Todd is an artist at the core, that is his job. To go for aesthetics, for looks; to build. Stan is a writer, it's his job to find the character, the nuances, the reason. I like the contrast between the two and how they worked with Venom together.
Todd's version of Venom always syood out to me! I thought Tom Hardy's Venom was the best. It reminded me of Todd's version. Is it missing the Peter Parker factor in the movie? Yep. But it is the best Marvel to date for sure. I grew up reading EVERY Marvel, DC, and Image comic I can get my hands on!
I HATED how Venom was portrayed in Spider-Man 3! It made no earthly sense to, not only have him in the movie for no reason at all, but to have Topher Grace of all people play Venom. While the Venom movie itself was a bit mediocre than Spider-Man 3, at least I enjoyed the movie more and Venom LOOKED like Venom!!
Sam Raimi didn’t want to use Venom in Spider-Man 3 because he didn’t understand the character and knew he wouldn’t do him justice but Sony pushed/forced him to use Venom anyway because he was a fan favourite villain. So I kinda blame Sony for screwing Venom up more than Sam Raimi.
Remember Todd is incredibly humble about what he did and didn't draw. He's not like Stan Lee who apparently invented the entire goddamn MCU. Todd repeatedly says he DESIGNED VENOM he DREW him. Which means he drew what he imagined venom to be and he also improved on pre existing art work. Batman when he was conceptualized and created by Bob cane was given all the things we know as being true to Batman Gotham, costume, gadgets and his identity by Bill Finger
Stan Lee was like your typical boss. I'll give an example. The second-gen Dodge Charger (1968 to 1970) was mainly designed by Richard Sias plus some co-workers, but Bill Brownlie took the credit in front of the press (even though Brownlie didn't like Sias and his Charger that much). If you understand Brownlie, you can easily understand Stan Lee. Ditko, Romita, Kirby did the main work, Stan Lee tagged along because he was their boss.
They share the same cognitive type. Basically the same human archetype. Both McFarlane and Peterson are INTJ types if you look at Jungian psychology and the MBTI types (despite the fact that it's a flawed system, it's indefinitely objective if explained properly).
Sam Raimi said he just saw Eddie/Venom as an evil mirror to Peter/Spidey. Hence why Eddie went from being a roughneck to being an evil nerd/fellow photog at the Bugle, and Venom became more or less an evil Spidey with the same size/build.
McFarlane cracks me up lol... He seems like a grown-up kid. Hope he never changes. He outlined my biggest issue with Gopher Face's portrayal of Venom as well.
From what I’ve read Sam Raimi didn’t want Venom in spider man 3. He was originally going to use The Vulture and Ben Kingsley was going to play The Vulture in Spider man 3. The studio forced Raimi to use Venom so Venom replaced the vulture and did the stuff The vulture was going to do in spider man it was kinda a copy and paste. From what I’ve heard Sam Raimi isn’t a big fan of Venom he likes the classic spider man villains like Green Goblin, Doc Ock and Sandman.
If he likes the Tom Hardy Venom, I’m sure he’s going to appreciate the Venom in the Spider-Man 2 video game. It looks like the devs did a good job making him a hulking beast of a character.
If Sony & Marvel can play this out right, Id love to see Venom get the best of Spidey.. Hes one of the very few villains who can get passed Spideys Sense and can take him on toe to toe. Seeing Peter having to rethink everything he knows in combat to try and outsmart Venom would make for a great movie.. you know...like he did in the comic.
I actually like venoms design in sm3 it was more realistic bc Eddie was buff in the comics so venom was buff in the movie he was slim with a little bit of muscle so venom was slim too plus I like the Spider logo it’s cool and sharp
I remember hearing how Sam Raimi didn't want to do Venom in Spider-man 3 because he didn't know the character but execs pushed it on him because he was popular therefore having him would sell more tickets. It's a shame, it wasn't terrible, I still enjoy the movie, I watched it only a few weeks ago.
I like how Todd said that the short answer was "no" but didnt elaborate on a long answer. Todd seems like the guy who can still appreciate other versions of his characters and see their own uniqueness. There are a couple scenes in Spider-Man 3 that Venom has that are actually really good. Specifically showing off his mouth. Very nasty sharp teeth wnd a wide open jaw. I appreciate it for what it was, even with its flaws but Todd is ultimately correct. Tom Hardy's Venom is the best we have seen so far in terms of Venom being on screen in movies and shows.
I'd swap out big Venom for having his emblem like, how do we have 4 appearances of him in live action with no white emblem? Give me a slim Venom, a Venom in a wheel chair, give me a Venom that's on fire and eats comets, and I don't care so long as he has his bloody emblem.
Mo 2k Why didn't they make Hardy bulk up and work out? I didn't see a single pound of muscle on him either. Throughout the film he looked like a fucking sweaty hobo, wearing that hoodie literally all movie.
Happy 2BeHere actually he looked a lot like Eddie Brock, much more so than hardy. About the only thing he didn’t embody about Eddie Brock is the ripped body
Then he would still look like topher grace but in black lol. Being 200lbs instead of 170 isn't going to change the true image of venom. Venom is probably 600-700 lbs and 8 feet plus tall. CGI would fix all that.
There's one panel of a Spiderman comic I read once that sticks with me. Eddie has recently bonded with Venom. He grabs an 18 wheeler axle while Venom takes over him and he says, "I'm going to kill Spiderman!" Or something like that and he breaks the axle in half. Bad ass
The Real Mandarin is gonna be the main villain in Shang Chi: Legend of the 10 rings. In the MCU. None of those two in Iron man 3 were the real mandarin, as far as the MCU story goes.
I haven't seen the Venom movie so I can't speak for that, but I never hated Topher Grace's Venom in Spider-Man 3. He did fine as Eddie Brock/Venom. That movie's biggest problem was that too much was happening and too many villains were jumping around. Venom simply wasn't needed in that movie, there was already enough going on with Sand-Man and Harry Osborn. That should've been enough and making Venom bigger wouldn't have improved the movie at all if everything else was left the same. The only ones to blame for Venom in SM3 is the Sony executives. Topher did a fine job, the writers did the best they could to include Venom in an already big enough story and Sam Raimi did his job to the best of his abilities. No amount of hulking up Venom would've made that movie better.
The way venom was depicted in Spider-Man 3 works for the film Eddie (in Spider-Man 3) is like the dark side of peter personified. He’s built just like Peter/Spider-Man. I love his design in SM3 and in Venom
Sam said it was a purposeful choice to keep Venom more or less human in proportion in SM 3. The threat Sam was going for was that of the shadow-self, the dark reflection. Venom was supposed to be psychologically frightening - a Spider-Man with no conscience, no morals, and the ability to get in to your life and strike when you're most vulnerable. Even though that was his intent, I think the movie is so fractured and disjointed that it gets completely lost and the climax is just your typical superhero beat-em-up.
I remember being in my early 20's going to see spiderman 3 at the movies. I was with a few of my buddies and when they finally showed Venom we all just sat there..blank face..no more hype..just silence. I wanted to walk out. So, not only was Venom a skinny kid in a scuba suit..he asked Sandman to TEAM UP against Spideman...🤦♂️
I still think Spiderman 3's Venom had the best special effects. The practical mixed with cgi. I loved how the tendrils were pulling on tophers face and the way it swallowed up his face was cool. But the final product left much to be desired. Really should of got a bigger bulkier actor.
I also found the Raimi Symbiote more insidious than the Tom Hardy Symbiote. Like, when the Raimi Symbiote bonds with Eddie.... that's a horrifying scene because the amalgamation can be seen as a form of r**e and Eddie is a prisoner in the malicious takeover.
I got a copy of issue #300 for ~ $4.00 with a bunch of other comics at a yardsale, circa 1994. The colors were sort of bleeding together and I ended selling it to a comic book store for $32!
100% agree with Todd one of the main reasons why I liked the Venom movie they got him right, unlike whatever the fuck Raimi was doing but then I tolerated Raimi's Venom back then because I was just happy Venom was in live action form finally
Yes, one of the ideas of Godzilla is that it's a monster so big that it eliminates any chance of defeating it by sheer power. That option is eliminated. Now, the challenge is about outwitting, tricking, outsmarting, outplaying, trapping or in the case of the original 'Godzilla' the hero discovers the mega-monster is terrified of the color red and sharp popping noises, organizes everyone to make red lanterns and light firecrackers so Nian (Godzilla) flees in terror at his worst fears and annoyances. This is the point of making it a giant powerhouse.
Kinda feel bad for Sam Raimi. He didn't even want to do Venom, he just wanted to use more of the villains he knew, but other people forced him into shoving Venom into his movie.
Honestly (and I really don't care if I'm in the minority here), I *don't* hate Topher's Venom from "Spider-Man 3." I understand that Topher himself was (and I think still is) a big fan of the character, and that Sony kept pushing Sam Raimi to include him in the film, and he didn't want to in the first place. But STILL, despite all that, I honestly thought Topher did a good job playing both Eddie and Venom. I'm trying to figure out how "Spider-Man 3's" Venom is so 'un-Venom like.' OK, so he's not hulking and muscular, and he doesn't refer to himself as 'we.' BUT, he has the familiar LOOK of Venom (spider-symbol included), and he possesses the powers and abilities of the Symbiote's former host just like in the comics. So really, what's REALLY missing from Topher's portrayal that still has people up & arms?
Clinezival VRG OK, I'll admit that Venom DOES look cool when he's massive and muscular. And I'm guessing you mean like the relationship between Eddie and the Symbiote, right?
Raimi's venom was cool enough maybe not big enough but his portrayal of Eddie Brock was way off the mark. Eddie was a towering bully to Peter. Not a wimpy petty rival.
wow to have to wait 30 years after completing it on paper to see it finally amalgamated as a motion picture with little to no recognition. THATS A FKN HERO RIGHT THERE!
I had a dream when I was a kid about venom I never forgot. He was hiding out in the subway and when Peter shows up he chucks a train at him. Spidy blows him up and then it spreads out into a bunch of venoms
To me Venom still has yet to be gotten right because in Spider-Man 3 the origin was right but he didn’t last long and he was scrawny like Spidey. Venom’s solo film got the appearance and symbiotic friendship right but the origin is wrong with no Spider-Man, movie not being darker, etc. I respectfully disagree with Todd but to each his own.
True enough, but it doesn’t exactly feel right knowing that Spider-Man isn’t involved any way shape or form. And the Ultimate Venom suit was made by Peter and Eddie’s parents and Peter and Eddie themselves were both important characters in the Ultimate Venom story. I have no problem with Venom having his own movie but to me and many others it doesn’t feel right with no Spider-Man in the origin. Yes they can add Spider-Man later but it’s gonna feel weird
Even Sandman was more buff than Venom in the movie lol.

Topher Grace is a decent actor but they should’ve casted someone else as Eddie Brock.
WashingtonIsNext have you seen him in BlackKklansman? He’s more than just “decent”.
he's a *good* actor. but yeah wasn't the right person to play brock.
Thomas Haden Church should've played Brock instead of Sandman. Problem solved.
It was not a good role for him
Brock Lesnar
Todd McFarlane is a creative and artistic genius. Spawn will forever be my all time favorite character. Waiting over 20 years for the next Spawn movie.... the toys were also the most detailed pieces I have ever seen.
The HBO series was dope.
I just want to make it clear that anybody who clicked on Venom and then went to the comments and clicked on Spawn...
Go watch The Maxx. For real.
To me Brock Lesnar is how I imagine Eddie Brock in real life.
Eddie Hall is more Venom sized than BROOOOOOOCK Lesnar!
Me too! He has to look like a jock bad guy.
Imagine Brock Lesnar as Eddie Brock Venom
Except Brock Lesnar can’t act for shit. Tom Hardy was a good choice however I wish they had him bulk up like he did when he played Bane.
@@jdr554 He wasn't allowed to juice for the Eddie Brock/Venom role.
Cmon Bruh.
Blame the studios my guy
Mo 2k this guy nailed it. Raimi had zero love for venom. He thought venom was a mindless monster and raimi was interested in the human aspect of spidey villians.
So what change?the scatter brain who thought having "the brides maids" director do a ghostbusters movie pushed for venom since s
he was "cool" and "in" with the kids.
It’s funny, I was also 10 years old when it came out and I knew nothing about Venom beforehand and I thought he looked pretty cool. Little did I know..
There's no potential if the director isn't interested in the character
"What's Happening!! He's not growing!!" lmfao, Todd McFarlane is my hero, guys just an incredible gift to the Comic book world.
Todd is an inspiration to entrepreneurs. I love his attitude and story. Whenever I need some motivation I'll listen to an interview with Todd.
and.. as im drawing... im listening to this.
As disappointed as I am with Venom in Spider-Man 3, I do understand that it was a creative decision because Venom in that movie was supposed to be like a negative Spider-Man, a what if Peter used his power for wrong doing, unfortunately we don't get enough time with the character for this to come across, however we do get some scenes with Brock that show us he's similar to Peter.
what? wasn't the the symbiote always like that for peter
Yeah. I like how all the Spider-Maguire villains parallel Peter in some way
The way Todd wanted to see Venom is the way we wanted to see him. I hope he remembers that when doing the new Spawn movie.
All because Raimi was forced to use Venom and did not grow up with Venom like he did Greeny Gobby. Unfortunately disappointed a lot of us Venom fans.
No ones slamming him, he did a good job for what was asked of him
I mean he got the scumbag aspect of Brock's character right. Simple miscast if you ask me. They needed a bodybuilder who could've bulked up for later parts of the film, but it's probably hard to find bodybuilders who are also good actors. And if Venom wasn't apart of Raimi's original vision, then there's that aspect too.
Better than the new retard they got
Topher was good but he didn't give me eddie brock vibes.
Topper is a fine actor but the guy who played Sandman should probably have played Brock.
I remember when Image comics first came out. It was such a huge deal at the time. Still have the first three issues of Spawn.
Spawn is still going strong too.

I defend the Raimi Venom as this:
1. Sam NEVER wanted Venom. Period. He though Carnage would be a scarier and more psychotic character (in 1&2 the villains were tortured people, so what would Spidy do against pure uncontrolled evil?)
2. Topher Grace could have worked if given more screen time
Topher Grace told a friend of mine he did it just for the pay cheque in a l.a bar where their were auditions for the next cartoon bane.
Daniel Kulchar lies. He thought this was his big break to go from That 70s shows to a big Hollywood actor. But then it failed and his journey ended where it started. 😂 dumbass should stayed as Eric foreman and maybe season 8 wouldn’t have been so shit.
Green Goblin was in no way tortured from what Peter saw.
If you check out Spider-Man 3 the game's cast interviews you'll see that Topher understands Eddie and Venom, so the character was basically a victim of the movie in general. Yes the actor could have been different but it wasn't his fault.
Could have still made him larger
The only thing I loved from SM3s venom was the design, (not the size).I loved how the suit was actually Spiderman's suit absorbed by the symbiote and it mimicked the small details like the lines and the tiny circles within the fabric.
Inflating and exaggerating the proportions just a little bit was literally all that was needed and I think would've made the film a lot more forgivable for it's other shortcomings.
It DID NOT absorb the suit, it mimicked the suit. You can tell the webbing and everything is "off".

It's not Raimi's fault tho he was forced to include a character that he didn't really know or care about into a movie that
already had two main villains. Even if he was big it still would've been a mess.
If Venom and Spiderman had extra 20 minutes of screentime together it would have made a serious competition for the second film.
I never thought he looked that bad. I do like that the venom suite was mainly practicle.
Practical in what way ? Venom is a monster .

Eddie Brock is 6'3" and 260 lbs.. Tom Hardy is 5'9" and maybe 180ish.. He is a lot smaller but I was happy to see got huge as venom.
Void Of The God Hand have you seen tom hardy in warrior? his traps and shoulders alone give him the appearance of a 260lbs man despite being 180.

I think it was doable back then in the same damn movie look at sandman. He was huge!
This guy and Stan Lee are my childhood.
Weapon X turned me on to reading comics. Spawn was the first comic I collected.
Mandarin in Iron Man 3 was a result of someone intentionally pooping all over the fans, character, and his history.
underrated comment.
The mandarin had always sucked, he wasnt even the main villain in most of the stories people claim he is.

The priority is because Marvel and Sony insisted on inserting Venom into the film. [I must say no more.]
It’s just a skinny guy”

Interesting how todd mainly focuses of the aesthetics of the comic book character, and Stan Lee paid attention to the character of the character
Well stan was a writer and Todd is famous for focus only in draw cool shit
That's the difference between an artist and a writer
Because Todd is an artist at the core, that is his job. To go for aesthetics, for looks; to build. Stan is a writer, it's his job to find the character, the nuances, the reason. I like the contrast between the two and how they worked with Venom together.
Todd's version of Venom always syood out to me! I thought Tom Hardy's Venom was the best. It reminded me of Todd's version. Is it missing the Peter Parker factor in the movie? Yep. But it is the best Marvel to date for sure. I grew up reading EVERY Marvel, DC, and Image comic I can get my hands on!
And the perfect adaptation is somewhere in the middle.
I love Todd's impersonation of Stan Lee
I HATED how Venom was portrayed in Spider-Man 3!
It made no earthly sense to, not only have him in the movie for no reason at all, but to have Topher Grace of all people play Venom.
While the Venom movie itself was a bit mediocre than Spider-Man 3, at least I enjoyed the movie more and Venom LOOKED like Venom!!
Sam Raimi wanted Venom to be an evil twin for Spider-Man reason why he picked Topher Grace
topher grace was a decent eddie brock but once the symbiote got on him, he became a joke

@@mottom2657no not on Spider-Man. A lot of that is very clearly Stan Lee. I would say Lee matter more Spider-Man than Ditko in terms of the character.

I love Todd he’s brilliant, so entertaining and insightful. True inspiration.

Sam Raimi should've done some research. Getting paid all of this money and couldn't bother to research the character??
I like how Todd said that the short answer was "no" but didnt elaborate on a long answer. Todd seems like the guy who can still appreciate other versions of his characters and see their own uniqueness. There are a couple scenes in Spider-Man 3 that Venom has that are actually really good. Specifically showing off his mouth. Very nasty sharp teeth wnd a wide open jaw. I appreciate it for what it was, even with its flaws but Todd is ultimately correct. Tom Hardy's Venom is the best we have seen so far in terms of Venom being on screen in movies and shows.
Raimi said he wanted brock to be Peter's equal, but without the moral. Like his dark half
I'd swap out big Venom for having his emblem like, how do we have 4 appearances of him in live action with no white emblem? Give me a slim Venom, a Venom in a wheel chair, give me a Venom that's on fire and eats comets, and I don't care so long as he has his bloody emblem.
I completely agree. I think they should have made topher grace work out and bulk up at the very least
Mo 2k Why didn't they make Hardy bulk up and work out? I didn't see a single pound of muscle on him either. Throughout the film he looked like a fucking sweaty hobo, wearing that hoodie literally all movie.
He did. He wasn't buff but he gained weight and muscle. He was just a skinny guy.
Happy 2BeHere actually he looked a lot like Eddie Brock, much more so than hardy. About the only thing he didn’t embody about Eddie Brock is the ripped body
The irony is that Spider-Man 3 was one of the catalysts for Topher Grace's decision to leave a successful sitcom early to jumpstart his movie career
Bad ass
Todd’s reaction to Venom was my reaction to The Mandarin.
Topher would've been a great Cletus Cassidy.
2:14 that's what she said.

What it was missing was that bond between Eddie and Venom and Venom is just sooo much cool as a hulking beast.

Raimi's venom was cool enough maybe not big enough but his portrayal of Eddie Brock was way off the mark. Eddie was a towering bully to Peter. Not a wimpy petty rival.
love todds personality hes honesty such a cool guy
He sounds like Saul Goodman lol
wow to have to wait 30 years after completing it on paper to see it finally amalgamated as a motion picture with little to no recognition. THATS A FKN HERO RIGHT THERE!
I have 2 of those Spider-Man 300 with Venom
I had a dream when I was a kid about venom I never forgot. He was hiding out in the subway and when Peter shows up he chucks a train at him. Spidy blows him up and then it spreads out into a bunch of venoms
I never knew that Jordan B Peterson was so into Spider-Man
Are we just going to overlook how good Mcfarlane's impression of Stan Lee is?! 1:45
Love hearing Todd talk about stuff. He’s got the excitement of a kid with a handful of pixie sticks.
