To me, the photos that are relevant are the photos from Lauren Kyle's (Connor's wife) Instagram of her and Leon's fiance (Celeste Desjardins) searching for wedding venues in France posted in the last couple of days. The fact that both Leon and Celeste were best man / maid of honour at McDavid's wedding this summer gives you an indication of their off-ice relationship. If you think two women planning their futures are not talking about raising their kids together and watching their husbands play hockey you're kidding yourself.
Like you said, he deserves it! he's regarded by many to be the second best player in the world and he's proven it, reg season and playoffs. Now it's up to the Oiler management to deal with it. Anyone not performing anywhere near their contract will have to go. So Mr. Nurse, I like the player, but this is the contract that will need to go in the next year or so.
Leon's did give a discount as teams would've paid him top cap. Since he could've gotten at least a million more, he gave the exact same discount as the rest of the players mentioned. It's amazing how quickly people forget the huge discount we had the last 8 years. What makes you people think he owes you anything or is expected to take a "home" town discount just cause he was drafted here smh.

Great to hear Leon is staying in Edmonton. Regarding Broberg and Holloway, it's clear to me that Broberg couldn't say 'no' to the money that St Louis offered him and a two year contract was wise. But Holloway? I'm not so sure. Although Holloway got a substantial raise, he should have signed with Edmonton for one year and then went to market. If he had his name on the Stanley Cup in the 2024/25 season, imagine what his free agency would have brought him (because I suspect Edmonton wouldn't be able to afford him). If Edmonton doesn't win the 24/25 season, his value would still go up substantially because of his increase season and playoff experience and assumed better play (barring injury which can happen in St Louis too). I do believe the chatter that he had to be convinced to sign the offer sheeet because he knows that he can win in Edmonton and he wanted to stay and win. The comments he made in that interview is reflecting youth, inexperience and how can he ever admit to anything else given the decision he just made. I think his agent didn't do him any favours because, although Holloway gained in the short term, I think he lost out in the medium term by not betting on himself. Long term, time will tell.
4 players at half the cap, won't be an issue with mcdavids 180 pts and drais 75 goals and booms 50% powerplay %. nothing to worry about, let the dynasty begin.
I knew you guys would give us a sober analysis. I was hoping for $13.25 or $13.5 but I’m very happy with the signing. The Oilers management will have to earn their pay when it comes to filling out the roster and how it relates to the cap. But Leon’s here for likely the rest of his career and that’s all I worry about. We’ve been the beneficiaries of free agents wanting to come to a winning team, for discounted contracts and Leon is a big part of that. Unless something really unexpected happens I think this almost assures that Connor will also be a lifetime Oiler. Edmonton has been blessed with the players we’ve had.
Imo we need to get that 2nd pair RD. If we can fit that player in, then the pain of our big ticket contracts will be okay. It means that we won't be as aggressive in adding that deadline piece but those are often overrated. As long as our main core is intact we will have a shot at the cup
What would really help is if they win the cup. Then, unloading a contract becomes more possible and acceptable. These players have families not a fan of uprooting them
Excellent. About finding support players, pro scouting will have to find those vets willing to come to Edmonton for 1-2 years at 1-2 mill per. And we will have to live through more Holloways and Brobergs. And Kostins, Desharnais's, etc. All worth it for the cup though.
McDavid and Draisaitl at 28 million vs 4, 7 million dollar players. These guys never get off the ice so it's a great deal as long as they win the cup 2 or 3 times.
The old Blackhawks template. The Oilers have been close . It seems the discrepancies between the top paid vs. everybody else are glaring. The western conference is a completely different animal this season. 29 & 97 are fun to watch. I don't think the defense is near where it needs to be.
I think when you look at a cap hit, the question is whether that number can be divided up to better effect… Are two $7 million players going to have Draisaitl’s effect? Or two $5 million + a $4 million? Unlikely Counterpoint is Nurse…I think there’s someone at 5.25 and another at 4 that together would have better value than Nurse’s hit
If they offered Holloway 400k more, he would have taken a discount and stayed with Oilers. Drai (14) did not take a discount so Connor should get 17M Bouchard 12 Mil Nurse 9.25.
That is percentage of the cap this year. Deal doesn’t kick in until next season when the cap should be higher, therefore the percentage shouldn’t be as high.
Ya David is wrong about that. It’s closer to 14.5-15% when it kicks in. And saying ‘it is not a is a discount in any way’ is also wrong, when he could easily get 15M + on the open market!
This year might be our only chance to win a cup. But even if we never do, at least we have Leon and hopefully McDavid to watch. If nothing else, being an Oiler fan will be exciting, even if we can't win a cup
It is good to see Draisaitl sign for 8 years. The money is a bit more than I expected (750k to 500k more), but it will not matter in a few years. Crosby's first contract extension was at 15.3% in 08/09 for 5 years. He then signed a 12-year contract extension at 13.5%. That extra 4 years probably have reduced Crosby's 2nd contract cap rate.
Holloway scored 7 in the playoffs and Drai scored 10. Holloway was willing to take 800k discount to stay with Oilers. Dallas took out Vegas and Colorado and were too tired for the Oilers. This year will be harder for the Oilers and Kings might not make the playoffs. What if Holloway scores 40 and Broberg becomes Bouchard?
@@dnice4145 They were missing Roope Hintz for the 1st and 2nd game and Chis Tanev gor game 6 and 7. Oilers took out kings who could miss the playoff's this year and Dallas took out the Stanley cup champs (both)

Bouchard is probably worth 12, I was thinking maybe they get him for 10? MacDavid if Draisatl getting 14 is scary. Good news though, once all those contracts get renewed the Habs should have a cup contending team. So we can swap over and be Montreal fans.
The real problem here is Nurse's ridiculous overpay of a contract. He's barely worth 3 million, let alone 9.5 million and if you base his salary on his efficiency, he's worth 2 million at best. If they didn't overpay Nurse they could have up to 7 million in cap space.
I don't think he took a discount at all. Better get the cup this year. No chance we will have a competing team after that. Would have liked him to be dealt. Bring in two capable players at around 6 million each. Plus what ever the team could get for Draisaitl. Would have been a good score. Draisaitl totally bummed me out.
If Draisaitl takes a million less so what. What really hurts the Oilers is that they have had dead buyout cap space basically the entire time they have had McDavid and Draisaitl. This year that number is 3.5%, in 2021-2022 that number was 5% of the total cap with Neal, Sekera and Lucic in the buyout/retention dead cap allocation. The bottom line is if the Oilers quit signing bad contracts that they have to spend their way out of they will be fine. Staples sits here talking about the percentage of the cap for an individual contract and completely ignores the two to three times that the Oilers have sitting in dead cap.
Yep, Staples seems to focus on the wrong things alot of the time. The Oilers not signing those 2 brats who were offer-sheeted is a good sign. Pay players only what they are worth on the market or less full stop. Holland/ Charelli got themselves into trouble with the cap when they did not value cap-space enough.
Should have traded draisaitl. Easily get 2 maybe 3 nhlers, and still have maybe 4 million to play with. Team is old snd slow with the 30th ranked farm system. Have fun with that.
Like the Leafs, it going to be very difficult for the Oilers to build a well-rounded championship lineup with its core players increasingly dominating the payroll. ✔️
Was either sign him or trade him situation. Paying majority of the cap to two or three top players is just a norm today. Is it a successful formula? Ask kings, hawks, and Pittsburgh.
Are these teams....Tampa, Florida and Vegas not all in tax free states? So, of course their stars can take less money and have a huge advantage over the Oilers?
Now we pay 💰 for it Hmmmmmm beer 🍺 $30 Fries 🍟 $10 burger 🍔 $25 parking 🚗 $50 Expect major increases, Oh yeah the fans pay the contract …. Eventually Just the way it is 😊
The Oilers had next to ZERO leverage, this is an amazing day in OIlers History, take care of the talent everyone else is expendable, and I'm talking about Goaltending and wingers, with at all costs , it's a business
If stu skinner wants north of 5 mill on his next contract, wish him all the best and find the next goalie, that's the way they need to operate going forward, there's too many heartwarming stories amongst the fanS IMO , we need to win a cup
What delusion! Drisatl will never last he plays too hard. Lots of miles on that body. He absolutely sucked in the SCF due to probably non disclosed injuries. He's already breaking down. Contract will backfire 100%. Draisatl is a very old 30 year old.
what are the chances leon and connor got together, connor has made more $ so takes another 12mill 8 year deal basically connor gives up 2 mill so leon can make an extra 2 and make closer to connor's lifetime earnings... if connor gets what he deserves in relation to leon, it'll be 16+ and cripple the team
Only listened for the first 4 minutes of your speech, and I can already disagree with your direction you are going into with essentially ringing the bells of panic and making Draisaitl into 'the bad guy' who took too much of the salary cap. SEE THE BIG PICTURE here: It is not a superstar's responsibility to tender for a friendly hit on the salary cap. It is a matter of all the LEADERS/DRIVERS in the NHL, from leading bodies/organizations to the owners, to IMPROVE the cap in the NHL. We pay as fans outrageous amounts of money for the tickets, like in no other sport. I live in Seattle am an Oiler and bought for the upcoming seasons (with no Playoffs tickets yet) around 5000$ on 24 tickets! When I lived in Europe, was paying as an FC Bayern fan 30 euros per ticket. How in the world can't the NHL deciding factors create a better salary cap situation, when I know lots of German players in a 'german' frugal Bundesliga system earning 20 M Euros per year (like Kimmich, Goretzka, Gnabry, ...) and we are complaining here that Draisaitl takes 14M $??? Don't project with ALL THE OILERS and NHL fan, that Draisaitl is here the Black-Sheep, when the PRESSURE should be on all the decision makers to not only raise (by 4-5 M as one hears) the salary cap, but to DOUBLE IT and allow top 'magicians' like Draisaitl to earn as in other sports!!!
It’s funny, just a few weeks ago both of you guys were clamouring for Jackson to bend over and give 2 x 4.58 mil to Broberg and 2 x 2.29 mil to Holloway knowing full well the position the club were in regarding Leo etc and now your both coming to the realization that the money needs to be spent wisely to win the cup? At least we know Leo can consistently put up MVP number’s meanwhile those other 2 hadn’t even eclipsed 100 NHL games a piece. This is a good day and it’s on management now to find opportunities that make sense and help the team win while paying the irreplaceable players on the roster what’s necessary and fair.
He totally deserves it, after being badly underpaid the last few seasons (turns out maybe Chiarelli wasn’t that bad) but will he deserve it at age 33 34 35 36 37 ??? Enjoy the now not worry about later , uh oh , yet
@SF1886 Depends on what the economy does...in 8yrs there won't be a recession that cause tickets sales to fall. Remember, even the Red Wings struggled after the great republican recession.
David goes on and on about signing as many $1M contracts as you want and then pisses and moans about an extra $1M per year for Leon. Move the farm team from Bakersfield to Edmonton and carry a 20 man roster….. there…..problem solved. Get creative for God’s sake.
Great news, I didn't think Dria would want to sign for that long but glad he did. So this will be Dria and MCD getting about 30 mill a year, about 32% of the total Cap. Just means they won't be able to afford to pay any other large contracts without hampering the overall team. Remains to be seen how that works out. (Blackhawks come to mind. won a cup, couldn't afford to keep that team together, flew into poopville.)
Oilers will never win a cup with Draisaitl’s new monster contract and Mcdavid’s even bigger next monster contract. . Was a good run last year. Hope everyone enjoyed it.
@DC-yl4vc yes he would. On the open market with teams looking to sign the 2nd or 3rd best center in the game bidding against each other, he'd get way more than 14 million per. There is reason these types of players don't reach the open market at this stage of their career. And we're talking cap-hit/average salary not the total value of the contract.
This is a disaster. How many of those big names u mentioned won a cup after their big signing? Now after two years Oilers will have McD, Dry, Nurse Bouch getting almost 50 million, over 50% of their cap to four players. And Dry isnt outstanding at all outside of the pplay or with McD. his contract will be such a millstone it will make Nurses look like Sam Pollock offered it. Proof of the pudding is in letting young guys like Holloway and Broberg walk. They’ll be a lot more of that over the next few years, let me tell u. And for of the fawning sports writers predicting’team friendly discount’ it shows what they know. Diddly😮 squat!! Dry should have been traded w Nurse albatross for a top player signed for four years like Brady Tkachuk. You want Dry u have to take Nurse too. Now we r truly screwed; wait and see how bad this contract will look in four years. Drys best years are behind him 😅
Cap hell for the next eight years while the prospect cupboard is bare and almost of the picks have been traded. Cup win is mandatory otherwise this is a collosal disaster
@gordtulk what are you even talking about? The offer sheets are irrelevant, the oilers were going to have to extend Draisaitl, if they failed to do so that would be a "collosal disaster". Winning the cup is the goal but nobody can argue that signing Draisaitl was not a prerequisite of even having a chance to.
I don’t think Bouchard is worth really big money…that’s just my opinion but he’s not a good defender…ya ya I know big shot but so have a lot of other guys!…I say bring in Deangelo or Barrie and let’s see what happens!

But what will his cap % be when the contract is year 1
Let’s talk about all the valued contracts we have to make it work
Like the Leafs, it going to be very difficult for the Oilers to build a well-rounded championship lineup with its core players increasingly dominating the payroll. ✔️
@SF1886 I stand firmly behind my comparison of the lopsided payroll distribution system of the Leafs and the Oilers. ✔️
Leafs core can’t get out of the first round. No comparison.
@@markglennon5574 I’m comparing payroll distribution, not on ice performance. ✔️
We’ve will have 10.2 million in cap room next year
% of the cap only matters from when it takes effect, in this case 25-26.
@SF1886 I never said he wouldn't be fine. I WAS saying that players can take less in those states because of the favorable tax laws.
Now we pay 💰 for it
Hmmmmmm beer 🍺 $30
Fries 🍟 $10 burger 🍔 $25 parking 🚗 $50
Expect major increases,
Oh yeah the fans pay the contract …. Eventually
Just the way it is 😊
So much for a discount. It had to be around 12-12.5. Oh well.
No Way, another team would have given Leon 16M. Boston would never pay 16 to Drai, They paid 6M to Marchand who won cups and a comparable player.
Katz has a building to pay for.... It will never happen if the Oilers don't win this year as other teams will poach the other free agents.
What delusion! Drisatl will never last he plays too hard. Lots of miles on that body. He absolutely sucked in the SCF due to probably non disclosed injuries. He's already breaking down. Contract will backfire 100%. Draisatl is a very old 30 year old.
Sounds like you’re jealous or something!..
what are the chances leon and connor got together, connor has made more $ so takes another 12mill 8 year deal
basically connor gives up 2 mill so leon can make an extra 2 and make closer to connor's lifetime earnings...
if connor gets what he deserves in relation to leon, it'll be 16+ and cripple the team
Wrong. The cap when his contract kicks in will be 15%. Come on David. It’s not in for a year. 88 makes no sense this year. 93 next year and 15%
No cup until we get a legit #1 goalie! Mr. California Closet Bi-fold will never get it done, sorry!
You ain't winning it without them
The last 2 yrs of his contract he is going to be a dog...will be, vastly, overpaid then at 38 yrs old.
@SF1886 Depends on what the economy does...in 8yrs there won't be a recession that cause tickets sales to fall. Remember, even the Red Wings struggled after the great republican recession.
Drai reminds of of Jagr in ways. He just retired this year. So ya I think Dria's game will age well.
Basing it on date signed is irrelevant...its when it kicks in that is the real stat.
Broberg and Holloway only paid for Drais's, next year's, raise. What other promising players will need to be sacrificed for McDavid's raise?
David goes on and on about signing as many $1M contracts as you want and then pisses and moans about an extra $1M per year for Leon. Move the farm team from Bakersfield to Edmonton and carry a 20 man roster….. there…..problem solved. Get creative for God’s sake.
Which planet are you on David it’s discount to the salary cap in a year quit the negativity.
Greedy and selfish
Enough is enough with speculation let’s get politics out of your thinking David
They didn't win with the 3 guys on a value contracts now good luck😂 once the Big 3 get paid they are done
Name one GM that wouldn't do there same???
Oilers will never win a cup with Draisaitl’s new monster contract and Mcdavid’s even bigger next monster contract. . Was a good run last year. Hope everyone enjoyed it.
zero discount
He'd make more on the open market for sure.
@@dnice4145 no he wouldnt...do the math x 7 years
@DC-yl4vc yes he would. On the open market with teams looking to sign the 2nd or 3rd best center in the game bidding against each other, he'd get way more than 14 million per. There is reason these types of players don't reach the open market at this stage of their career. And we're talking cap-hit/average salary not the total value of the contract.
@@dnice4145 yeah but only 7 years...tell yourself what you lime this is high water mark. 5.5M raise for his 30s
@@dnice4145 it would take 16x7 for him to match these dollars with injury risks all year. Zero discount, dont be a fanboy.
Drys best years are behind him
😅
Cap hell for the next eight years while the prospect cupboard is bare and almost of the picks have been traded.
Cup win is mandatory otherwise this is a collosal disaster
Cap-hell is an overstatement. If the goal is to win (and you need great players to do so) than this is the cost.
@@dnice4145 not sure how you can say that after the offer sheet and what is to come after this season
@@dnice4145 lol. There are no offer sheets if the oil had room to pay them more.
@gordtulk look up the definition of "priorities". Maybe it will be of some assistance to you.
Negative, negative, negative, negative, negative, as usual.
Who cares about them
I don’t think Bouchard is worth really big money…that’s just my opinion but he’s not a good defender…ya ya I know big shot but so have a lot of other guys!…I say bring in Deangelo or Barrie and let’s see what happens!
Does not want to win. Trade him now.
Holloway and Broberg ran out of Edmonton. So much for "magnet for elite players"
“Elite”
“Prospects?”
Leon has been underpaid for years. As long as 97 signs we can build around them.
worst year of his career incoming this year
LOL - you must be an Oiler hater
@@KptKrunch9481 far from it.
season ticket holder. spent close to 30K last playoffs attending games.
im just a realist, contract years often times players see digression.
@@b3n751it’s regression 🤦🏼♂️
@@b3n751 So um, yeah, Syd, Gretz, Mess - all of them just tanked once they got their big contracts right? For a 30 year hockey fan, you can't see what's in front of you. You know who tanks? Players who sign big contracts when they have a career year, like oh, Campbel, Huberdeau, Penner, etc. What exactly in Leon's play have you seen that makes you think he's something other than what he is? THREE TIMES he's had 50 goals, 50 assists, in the past 4 years - who else has done that? Look it up. Get real
