Thanks for this great video! I grew up one block south of Merrick Road between the Jones family cemetery and Caroons Lake and I worked at, All American as a teen. I got sick of eating burgers and fries all the time so turned to the knish as an alternative break meal. The next time you're passing through try your knish with cheese, onions, and pickles and a side of mustard and ketchup. That's my favorite way to order one. 😊
You can't imagine how often I have driven this stretch. When we do volunteer work for St William the Abbot's Fair, we pick up heroes at the Seaford Deli.
Spending much of my youth driving up and down Merrick Rd. and never really seeing or knowing the history surrounding it is what encouraged me to start the channel. Thanks for watching!
This is great stuff, Doug! Keep up the good work. This is the kind of history which people drive past every day, and never appreciate, or even know about - thanks for making it so accessible!
Thank you for this. I played in the park, walked to the museum, Had My Wedding photos taken there also...could see the Red house from my house on forest ave..walked to MHS a lot .. I remember the big beautiful mansion On Merrick Road & Hicksville Road with all beautiful shrubbery all around it enclosed With a beautiful black iron fence and the maids standing outside waiting for the merrick Road bus..I was bout 6 yrs old, then it Eventually became a farmers market that would have circus with type rope walkers that I could see from my bedroom window. I was told that Sophie Tucker lived there and Annie Oakley too.. Hung out behind the Carvel 1958 through 62 with our boyfriends in their hot rods. All American wasn’t there yet it came in 63 and it was the first stop I made in 1964 on my way to have my first child. I just had to have a burger.... the doctor did not like that. That child ended up working at all American as a teen. The Grace Church used to be open and we would go in there sometimes and just sit there. My brother is Buried at that church cemetery.. Just down the road from where the All-American used to be was a beautiful mansion, that belong to Judge Lynne... Virginia, Tyler and Mac Lynne were the children. I went to school with them. That was also where the school crossing guard would cross us to go to Massapequa Avenue Elementary school aka Fairfield Elementary school .. The Jones cemetery-was neglected, it spooked me out when I walked by it .😉So glad they cleaned it up, it was overgrown back in the 60’s... Thank you for this video, such memories were brought back to me ! Spent most my very young age walking to Seaford & going to Tacapusha pk. I was born in 1944
@@margaretschwartzberg666 The Searles lived behind the RED HOUSE. I recall when the Taka.....museum moved from Sunrise to Merrick Road. As a Boy Scout we would weed the fence line. We could not wait for the lake to freeze. We lived two blocks south of the PEQUA and moved to Massapequa just as it opened. There are several Massapequa Facebook pages now-lots of good info there. I grew up on the Island and knew very little about the history or sights beyond my little zone between South of the Grumman Runway, West of the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway, North of Hempstead Trnpk and East of the Nassau Mall. The rest was just what I passed through to get to school, the Beach, All American, and my friends houses. I think it's normal to over look things that are right in front of you, I mean, I've never been up into the Empire State Bld nor the Statue of Liberty, it was a tourist thing.
@@DayTrippingAdventurer so I grew up about a half mile east of Massapequa High School, in between Merrick Rd. and Sunrise Highway. I did go to a number of places you visited in the video. I also went to both the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty when I was a kid. I loved them both. When I went to the Statue of Liberty for the first time, you could go up into the arm, but it's been many decades since that's been allowed.
Ha! Park Blvd was as far as I could walk and thought it was about as far a I could expect anyone else to walk in one day. I definitely would love to expand my journey down Merrick Rd as there is plenty more to see, but with Covid I couldn't get back to LI. But glad to know there's interest!
Totally agree. The road is always jammed and during the walk I had to speak up over the cars. So, I would definitely not advise riding a bike on the street. But, there are sidewalks along the entire length, so walkings no problem at all. I often find a whole lot more places to visit and/or eat at if I'm on foot. Like I drove passed that grave yard hundreds of times and that was my first time actually seeing the graves. Good luck and stay safe out there!
@@DayTrippingAdventurer I'm a teenager and I can ride my bike all day. Merrick rd is the only road that got me scared to be on by freeport where merrick rd meets the Meadowbrook parkway. The turns going on the highway are so scary to cross on a bike.
@@tulrid7550 Ah to be young again :D. I grew up in Bethpage, two blocks north of Hempstead Trnpk. We would ride our bikes over to the Nassau mall or up to the park. But we had back roads and paths we would take to avoid the turnpike at all costs. Very rarely did we ride all the way down to Sunrise Hwy. So I understand living in the bike seat. I'd say that for the length of the trip along Merrick, you could ride a bike, but on the sidewalk (being careful of pedestrians of course) and then you could also ride along the trails in the Massapequa Preserve. When I was a kid, I rode with my friends to have fun and get where we needed to be, I never really took advantage of bike trails and such. Also, there was FAR less traffic back then. Best of luck on the roads and stay safe and thanks for the comment!
@@DayTrippingAdventurer No problem, and if you still live in long island chances are you might see me or have seen me 😭 I can ride for hours. Every single day. I checked out some of your other videos, I really enjoy your content. You need more subs! Keep this up, I learned a lot.
I was visiting LI and as I wandered around the neighborhood I saw all these cemeteries and historical markers and realized I really knew very little about the history of the area I grew up in. I also realized that I never really walked down any of the roads in LI, so I thought I would share my experience and the information I found. As you can see from my other videos, I just like to walk around and share the interesting things I discover.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I will give that Knish order a try. Sounds like such a crazy combination that it just might work.
That’s a nice video. We live in Massapequa and I learned new facts from you. Thanks.
Thanks for posting this awesome video of my old hood. I grew up east of Massapequa High School and All American was a staple in our diets.

Beautiful place
Very nice presentation Doug, thank you!
Love the video and the info, man! Well done, keep creating whenever possible!
Very nice!
I went to school at Grace Chuch. Grew up off Park Blvd.
..Bucket list. Like said before, I've driven past here so many times.
Ocean Ave was cut to provide a straight road between the Massapequa Hotel and the LIRR station.
Thank you for this.
