On this episode of The Fab Forums I spend some time to go over the different style TIG torch collets. TIG welding is a slower process compared to MIG welding so anytime I can find little things that help me speed up the process I like it. The tig torch collet is one of those things. These collets from CK Worldwide are awesome.

The worst was in welding school after running 200A that poor collet was anealed and finger tight was too much. And I was being dental! Surprisingly, I have been using the same wedge at home for 2.5 years. So 5 is a long time supply.

The thought that went into the interchangeability of TIG iTorches is a wonder to behold, especially when you're down to your last cup...like a cell phone with a screw for every hole and with every hole you're screwed. I feel like eating some pie, apple pie.

The pinch type collet develops a memory so they stick unless you put the tungsten back exactly where it was before. The wedge collet is a game changer!

I have to get these now! I’ve been annoyed by mine for a while now because of that tightness

I personally find the wedge collets take the heat so much better than standard especially the stubby ones

i use standard collets and get them cheap on amazon. i wonder how wedge collets compare in cost vs. life of the gas lens over time? does the wedge being forced into a tapered bore wear out the end of the gas lens quicker? dunno, just a pondering. keep up the progress man, love the project!

main problem with the standard slit collets is because they are made from copper, if they were made from brass (like they used to be many years ago) there would not be a problem, take a note of what these wedge collets are made from, they are actually made from brass, how long will it be before these wedge collets start getting made from copper. I think it has a lot to do with selling spares, brass collets last to long so they make them from copper.

I cannot believe that most tig shops do not use wedge collets or even know they exist. I have been using 1 wedge collet at my shop for about 4 years and never had to change it. Its just weird that know one uses them.....to me anyway.
