Red Magic 9 Pro Review in 2024 | Still Diablo Hot?

- It's got a transparent back, a headphone jack, a built-in fan, no punch hole or notch, and no camera bump! Yep, it's the Redmagic 9 Pro, a value-packed gaming phone. This is my in-depth 2024 review a few months after it launched.
Far from perfect, it only promises "more than two years" of security updates, the interface has some questionable translations and the cameras aren't class-leading - especially that under-display selfie camera. But would I still recommend this slick gaming phone over key competition like the cheaper Poco X6 Pro and the pricier Asus ROG Phone 8? Absolutely. Watch my full Redmagic 9 Pro in 2024 review for some Genshin Impact gameplay and to find out why I'm such a fan.

The Redmagic 9 Pro is my gaming phone of 2023/24 so far, but is it yours? Use my link to pick one up and I might earn some commission - redmagic.gg/products/redmagic-9-pro?ref=ntyymdk& - and to be super clear, this video is not sponsored and I did not receive any goods for making it. Thanks for watching!
I have never placed any value in water proofing. Maybe im the weird one. Even without gaming i prefer this design emphasis on fan battery size and blockiness over larger brands.
The Netflix thing is Netflix squeezing companies for money because they are so large. The phone can certainly handle HD content, Netflix is the silly company here.
It's fixed now with the most recent firmware update.
@@cinchez007 Oh really? So that is no problem anymore?
@@cinchez007 i now also have the 9 pro. Netflix is still in SD
Just picked up this phone with all the bells and whistles. thanks for the review dude. Also... I love that your name is Basil.
Which one would you really and honestly recommend for a collage student like me who doesn't have much big budget and lives off with scholarship money.
- POCO F6 Pro
- Nothing Phone 2
or this one Red Magic 9 Pro.
What i noticed is that all three phones looks slick in design. I really love them but can't decide in the long term. I am not really gamer of myself and i am not a also big fan of cameras either and i don't even take pictures of myself or anything other than me unless something big happens around me.
So you are my last savior Basil. With your guidance i am gonna go and purchase my new phone and will use it in the long term like 4-5 years and will never change because i don't like changing phones like people do every year that they do with iPhones or Samsung phones sadly. So this will be my long term purchase untill my graditation.
Thanks for taking your time and posting awesome reviews like this.
Keep up with good work!
Sincerely,
Kappashiro.
Nubia z60 ultra same Price as the redmagic with a solid photo parts .and in réality it's the same brand and the same phone 👌
@@cyriloswald4748 thanks for the recommendation but i really dont want camera that good as long as the phone is solid strong one.
Great review, thanks! Might consider it now
If u play at max settings buy the fan they sell it truly helps
Thanks for the tip! Basil
I saw your comment and bought it just now, I'm playing wzm and it heats up quite a bit
@@tobyhamsbuy the nishen 48 watt cooler from temu it's wayyyy better than those little fans 😂
Only 650 and on par with flagships today i mean i use to use a iphone 14 pro and redmagic 9 pro is by far better alot better
You can use the Redmagic Magnetic Cooler 5 Pro or the EX3 Pro and attach it onto the Redmagic Protective Case that has a metal ring. Both cooling fans got 36W, I think the EX3 Pro has a bigger cooling surface and is cheaper but maybe the Redmagic fan is of higher quality and might perform better, anyways, could you get those 2 fans and the case and make a performance test?
I would love to see red magic make there own version of the surface Duo
Finally, an actual Review to know what anyone, that have in mind to buy this Phone, knows everything that's going on! Thank you! :)
what is that navigation option? I dislike nav bars and this looks like my current root app navigation. does it swipe middle for home, right for app switcher, and left for back? just swipe up from the bottom with no visible nav buttons?
I just ordered one yesterday. I wasn't so sure especially with the band compatibility, but shopping for other phones the prices on some of these phones is just stupid. So I pulled the trigger and im really hoping that I will like this phone.
I use tmoblie with it no issues and no difference then when I used the iPhone 14 pro that I gave away for this phone
@@mrmack3176 that's good to hear. UPS tracking says it will be here today. I use Verizon so I will update this when I get it.
Have you tried it out yet?
@@juan_ctzz Well I'm not the best person to review a phone, because the most expensive phone I ever bought before this was a 80 dollar walmart phone, so yea...
So far I love the phone, it plays everything I throw at it smooth as butter, and it stays nice and cool only getting slightly warm playing genshin impact at max settings after 2 hours. As for the band support, verizon did not support this phone so I had to go to T-mobile, it works perfectly fine with them.
I was insecure about buying this phone, and now I love it, my main phone was a p30 pro mainly because i like EMUI system, i was aiming to use red magic as my mainly console for just gaming. but now is my mainly phone also, the snapdragon 8 gen 3 processor is just a beast. im very happy i bought this phone.
Ordered through your link. Thanks alot for the in depth review. Dont care much for the camera / it not being waterproof since I bought it solely for pubgm. Hoping snapdragon 8 gen 3 will give me steady 90 fps in densely populated areas and also support 120 fps when it comes out in the next update. Also hoping the fps stays steady for these 2 years redmagic says they keep updating it. Cheers Basil 😁
Thanks Simcha! Appreciate that and really hope you enjoy the phone. I loved making this review, and was so sad to send my review phone back to Redmagic after filming this. Good luck with those steady 90fps frame rates 💪
Hey, nice Video!
How about Dust? Because the Fan is open, is there any problem after a couple of months?
I wish I could tell you, I had it for one month to review, then sent it back to Redmagic as it was a loan sample. In that month, though, I didn't have any issues, and I've been using an 8s Pro on and off for 7 months without issue. Hope that helps! Basil
its better to use it to ECO MODE. it has strong chipset and gpu so theres no need to diablo actually.
Thanks for the comment!
are the speakers under the screen for this phone? or are they one the side like most other phones?
2 speakers one on top the other one on the bottom
Can you put a phone cooler radiator to this phone for keeping much lower temp of the cpu?
Yes
I get 3 days + out of my RM9P and the 6,500mah battery only comes in the 12GB version, awesome phone, have had it for almost 2 months and still amazed by it
And the 16gb version doesnt have 6500mah?
@@pavoo8739The 16gb/512g versions also have the 6500mah
That is false, I have the EU model NX769J with 16GB, and in the about phone menu it shows 6500mAh
@@Higurashi690 unless they released a different version than what was available when it first released is the only way I see that to be possible, the 12GB version comes with a 6500mah battery and 80W charging, the 16GB version comes with a 5500mah battery with 165W charging so you must have a custom or special version of this device
@@pavoo8739 12GB version 6500mah with 80W charging 16GB version 5500mah with 165W charging
It’s 799 in the UK. I don’t know where you’re getting it for that price but let me know.
Here's my affiliate link - redmagic.gg/products/redmagic-9-pro?ref=ntyymdk&
It says £579 for me, let me know if that's different for you. Cheers! Basil
I really want to get one but I've seen conflicting info about network compatibility. I'm in US and have AT&T if anyone can help
AT&T works. But you'll get text msgs from AT&T saying that the phone doesn't support your phone, but just ignore it. Calls , text and Data works fine. Only downside I've seen is, no 5G network. I've gotten 5G speed with Verzion and T-Mobile. But won't work with Straight Talk Verizon tower.
My redmagic 9 pro works with my atnt service no issues.
All you need is a selfie stick, position the phone just right, and bam
This is the coolest phone I have ever seen. Just ordered it, hopefully its a good one!
In terms of gaming it's amazing in a league of its own . I played MArio oddyseey for 4 hours at 70 fps which is impressive. However, software wise my s23 ultra is light-years ahead . Also updates and high
Level emulation cause some overheating over time. Also the red magic gives the charger in the box and the IR Blaster which is cool and different
So which would you recommend?
@@Kxngdelly for gaming at a higher level the red magic 9 pro , for everything else in software as a normal phone for multi tasking, video and phot editing, ssd compatibility,
I like the RM9 Pro however I am still undecided if I should ditch my Lenovo Legion Dual 2 Pro for gaming other than the SD8 Gen 3. There is alot of pros n con between two phone.
I would if you're okay with the software support, mainly because the 8 Gen 3 and Redmagic design and screen nail it for me. What do you prefer about the Lenovo?
Will there be monthly or quarterly security updates?
Stay off the freaky sites on your phone and security won’t be an issue. People want to go on any site like it’s a computer or something. Let the phone be a phone.
A phone hasn't been (just) a phone for a long time now. It's probably the function people use the least.
What would the temperature be when the fan is on while diablo mode is on?
That depends on how long you're gaming and what game is running. A 15m Genshin session with Diablo mode on only peaked it to 30° C at max graphics settings 60fps.
hey man does it play hdr videos, can you please test?
I've sent my review device back to Redmagic I'm afraid, but technically it should as it has an HDR display. Just not through Netflix or other services it isn't certified for.
Thanks :)
Great review. Thanks
7:30 NO 50 MP!!! There is no option to change the quality of camera. The pictures are only 7 MP!!!
How long does it take to get shipped because I ordered a week ago and still hasn't even been shipped
Order mines last Tuesday and it will be here today from Ups . Good luck
3 to 4 days if your in us 😊

I would love a gaming phone with no camera.
exactly
I cant tell if ur being sarcastic or not
@@anthony_yt484He's not. Only narcissistic clowns need a camera with them everywhere they go, and in this creepy age of constant surveillance, some people would just feel more comfortable without one.
Same i love phone's without cameras

I understand devices like samsung not having an SD card slot to make them as thin as possible, but this is a gaming phone. Thats a deal breaker for me....
i have 256gb version with a lot of android games, ps2 games and even pc games (ETS2 and NFSU2) through Termux pc emulator and still have 50gb free space...you literally don't need more than 256gb...if you do for some reason than you have 512gb version with 16gb ram (12gb is more than enough) :)
@@MIHAKOPRIVNICA 256gb def not enough,512gbs rom is the new standard. Personal preference all the way son. just get 16gbs and unbothered. No need to restart phone for weeks. 12gb is fine dear.
@@karma9007 i have 28 android games, 3 ps2 games, 10 ps1 games and 2 pc games and still have around 50gb free space...and guess what..i only play myb 5 of them and rest is collecting dust
I don't use to play other games, cause the only one that i only play is codm and warzone Mobile. Codm don't overheat cause i have played within an hour and my own phone didn't overheat, but in warzone Mobile does overheat when you play.
0:19 $649? Where? Link please.
Here you go: redmagic.gg/products/redmagic-9-pro?ref=ntyymdk&
@@tech_edit that is for the sleet model. What you have in your hand is the cyclone model for $799.
@@Bubsy_Mods yep, I'm talking about the starting price for a SD8G3 device at 00:19. The version I was sent for review isn't the starting capacity model.
@@tech_edit you did not say "starting" you said "at". I would at least put an indication with subtitles saying that the sleet model is for $649, while you're showing off the cyclone model for $799.
Netflix who?
I definitely wanted to grab this phone but the company is promising 2 years of software support.
Yep, explains the price though. Still, I would pay an extra £50 for longer software support personally. Cheers for the comment :) Basil
@@tech_edit agreed, I'd pay a little more for longer software support.
You would probably save money in the long run with red magic.
With the increased prices with Samsung. Also a lot of people get a new phone every 2 years anyway.
Let me know if they ever allow bootloader unlock. I am still using a Sony xz1c thanks to unlocking and lineage, so I expect about ten years from a phone
@@geodescent I've sent the phone back now, but great to know you're still rocking the XZ1 Compact, what a beauty.
Bro I been looking for a phone without esim. Esims are a headache in the US. No I do not plan to travel international
If you're also looking for a stellar gaming phone, this could be the one. Thanks for the comment. Basil
I love this phone 😊
I literally bought this because of the screen. Netflix on SD looks amazing on this. Don't be fooled by certifications
does it have hdr? netflix and youtube?
If it had hdr, HD Netflix, and support for all us bands i would get it. Got the one plus instead.
The OnePlus is excellent, plus that camera 🥵 enjoy and thanks for the comment. Basil
What's HD Netflix mine looks HD how can you tell
the selfie camera sucks lol but above all it's still an awesome gaming phone
Another tech reviewer who ignore main feature and test with wireless iems. Thanks, bud.
The Redmi K70 Pro is cheaper, you can get 24GB RAM and 1TB Storage for 650 $.
No shoulder Buttons,
A big notch
Only 5000mAh Battery
Oh and a dumb 4k resolution on the Display which Makes it useless for gaming
@@xslamdownx102 Yeah I agree, I'm struggling to decide which one to get because my budget is limited.
no gaming trigger, no built-in cooler, no 3.5mm, no hidden selfie cam, no 6500 mah battery and the xiaomi non-global phones are always really bloated with chinese apps. Wouldn't it be better to get the red magic 8 pro even though the soc is weaker? (both of them are at the same price)
Bro you are playing the wrong games. You need to play cod warzone mobile with 4x msaa and 16x anisotropic filtering at 120FPS and then you wilm get the overheating in diablo. My 9 Pro got so hot, that it shut itself down to prevent damage to the battery...
120hz is a joke, ultra low end phone, even 200€ phones have 120hz
No subwoofer, bad software
Really not worth the price
And not usefull for gaming
what phone u use rn?
@@swimbored asus
But dont be fooled, the new one isnt a gaming Phone
explain to me how is 120hz ultra low end? Yes 120hz is super old but it is the standard, andyou can't even notice the difference in 144hz and 165hz and it just drains more battery. You won't notice the difference at all until you get to 240hz
@@1_43 yes you will notice it 😂
Subwoofer on a phone? 😂 Good luck finding a phone like that lol
