  • This is a small montage of game camera video clips that show cougars communicating with chirps and squeaks. Those might not be birds you're hearing in the forest!

      I refer to the cougars in those videos as 'the family of four'. I believe they were a mother with her three kids. Cougar young stay with Mom for up to two years before leaving on their own. They frequented my place fairly often for about a year. After I caught them on video 'talking' to each other like this I heard them clearly very early one morning as I left for work in the pre-dawn darkness. They were quite close. They had learned when I left for work and my trail cameras showed them heading to my place at the right time of the morning to watch me leave on more than one occasion! It was spooky to know they were right there but of course you wouldn't see them.

      Hi Nikkki. Yes! After I had discovered that they can make these noises I had stepped out of my motorhome at my usual time of 05:20 one morning to go to work. Winter. I heard these chirps right close and, as it was still dark, I knew there were cougars there watching me. I checked my game camera trapline later and discovered that they had traversed the property direct to my homestead that morning to watch me. They were curious and were stalking me.

      When you are in big trouble, they make a sound I don't know a name for. All I can liken it with is glass pack mufflers on muscle cars. It's so powerful you can feel it vibrating through your truck door, and up through your seat. That's when they are pissed at you. And lions reason. They know exactly who they are mad at, and they hold a grudge. It's important to know, a female lion can have up to SEVEN kittens per litter. I believed it was only 2 or 3 per litter. So make sure when you find a new litter on your property, don't think they have to be Bob cats. It's so not healthy, words can't tell you. Also, lions are NOT nocturnal. Everyone knows that, but according to CA fish and wildlife, they are. They are not. Most all attacks occured during the day, except mine. Mine happened at 4 a.m.

    • @kandycepeterson2482
      @kandycepeterson2482 4 месяца назад +2

      Female lions can have up to SEVEN kittens per litter. Make SURE you carry bear spray without fail. If you get around her kittens unwittingly, she will know it. Even if she's out hunting on her own when they are too small to go. A lion reasons. And they know exactly who they are mad at. It is imperative you stay away from the kittens. The kittens can get your scent on them too. In which case, a lion will premeditate your murder. And likely lie in wait for you and specifically who they are mad at. Prevention and detection are the best route. Lion proof your property so it's not attractive for a den. Such as my mistake of tarping my F150 to the ground. Skirt decks cut hedges, anywhere a lion can be out of the rain to eat. I'm not speaking off the cuff or citing any of it from research papers. I thought 7 kittens had to be bobcats under my F150. And it almost cost me my life. I decided to study them to get past my post debilitating terror. So I did. I couldn't force myself to get out of my vehicle for months. I slept a few hrs during the day at work. I sat up all night, so I made use of my time. But I fear nothing like I do the mother- CUJO. 6 months after, I learned to function again. Don't listen to your gut. React to your gut. If you see kittens or a lion pretend you don't and don't swing your arms or sing out loud like your shopping at Macy's. Seven kittens. It's my mission to make sure as many people learn this fact. So, please, pass it on. Ty for listening. Something positive has to come from it. I was singled out for a miracle. I owe it to 30 minutes of pleading to a higher power that I survived.

      Hi. Thank you for commenting. I was very surprised myself to find these clips recording cougars making those sounds. It was primarily a family of four (Mom and three kids I suspect) that were feeding on a deer they took down. Cougar young stay with their mother for up to two years before going off on their own. These were all pretty large cougars so I suspect they were close to leaving their mother. It's possible that they only chirp like that when young and still with their mother but I'm not sure. Big Cats are in places you would never expect. I was sleeping outdoors in Montclair, NJ 2 years ago...this is a few miles from NYC. At 2am, I was awakened by all of nature going nuts (like warning each other a predator was there). Suddenly I heard a big cat roar. I have never been more scared in my life. New Jersey has mountain lions. Video is called "It wanted to eat me" if you want to hear that story. Wow. What an experience.

      I think cheetahs chirp to each other to avoid drawing the attention of larger predators. E.g. lions, hyenas etc who don't normally bother with small prey like birds. not sure why cougars also would if that's the case

    Last night heard a "chuffing" sound when I opened the tent zipper.
    Been hearing the bird chirps, it's been windy and moonlit past few nights..lots of mule deer around. Whatever it was last night hung around all night, dogs within a half mile were barking until before dawn, heard it climb? a tree nearby or it was clawing the tree like houscats do.
    I'm 99% percent sure it was a mountain lion or 2.

    Greetings from the BIG SKY. Most interesting. I met one of those critters on Fort Peck Reservoir right at dark while I was crawling up on a 4 point muley. about 5 feet from me on the other side of a big sandstone rock. That was a meeting I wouldn't recommend coming to unarmed. I had my .54 Hawkin and my .45 Walker Colt and my knife and I felt vulnerable.
