- When Roland Emmerich’s 1998 Godzilla movie was announced, expectations were HIGH. Finally, Hollywood was taking a crack at the king of all monsters and technology had advanced enough that it could bring the king to life in an unprecedented way. But the movie came out and it wasn’t exactly a hit with fans. The 2 planned sequels were canned but a cartoon was made in conjunction with the movie - GODZILLA: THE SERIES. And this one turned out great. Don’t believe us? We’ll explain.

Godzilla: The Series retroactively redeems the movie to me. Zilla Jr. is legit badass, to the point of actually being one of my *favorite* Godzillas. He's got the speed and digging ability of his father, plus the durability and atomic breath of his Japanese namesake. Plus his "must protect tiny squishy dad" attitude toward Nick is beyond adorable. Speaking of, Nick got almost as much of a badass upgrade in the cartoon as well, and just imagining that version of the character saying Matthew Broderick's lines in the movie makes me laugh. But 22 years on I can at least appreciate the 98 film as it's own thing, and be thankful it led to one of my favorite 90s cartoons.
One of the best episodes, with one of my favorite monsters, was Juggernaut. The animation was top notch and the monster, an alien blob thing that absorbs technology into itself (it ends up looking like Tetsuo at the end of Akira) was fantastic, with a creative way to get rid of it. One of the best episodes. I also dug the winged lion statue monster. And of course, Komodithrax, Godzilla's single-episode would-be love interest who meets an untimely end. The show has some incredible monster designs throughout, though.
It pains me *physically* that the Trendmasters toys were cancelled, because I'd kill for a Zilla Jr. figure (you can't just recolor a 98 movie toy, Jr's head is shaped different and he has one fewer fingers on his hands). I really wish that the series had gotten a third season, or at the very least a proper finale to wrap things up.

Adelaide Productions was the division in charge of Godzilla the series. You can see a similar design style with Men in Black: The Series, Extreme Ghostbusters, Jackie Chan Adventures, and Big Guy & Rusty the Boy Robot - the latter also has many interesting giant kaiju-like monsters. Would be cool to see an interview with the character designer for these series Thomas Perkins
That's a shared universe in my mind, and no one will ever sway me on this. I want an Adelaide Universe crossover, where the Techo bad guys from Big Guy try to resurrect a giant alien using a magic talisman and instead twist it into a kaiju alien ghost with control over the dead, which then requires the combined skills of Godzilla and HEAT, Rusty and the Big Guy, The Extreme Ghostbusters, the MIB, AND JACKIE CHAN to take down!
@@theawesome925 Don't forget Dragon Tales -- yes, that was a Sony show too. My headcanon is that when brought to our world, Org, Cassie, Zak and Wheezie become massive kaiju themselves. They simply use a new chant with the dragon scale -- this is when Max, Emmy and Enrique have grown up, and stopped using the scale for fear somebody would exploit it. They haul it out when things go south and Zilla Jr. needs backup.
My favorite line is when Nick said " I just re-adopt him"
The animated series was so dope but Fox was constantly sabotaging the series with changing the time slot, hardly promoting it, moving around episodes out of order.
That mostly had to do with the fact that Fox kids was doing marathons of Digimon to compete with kids WB and Pokemon which was their hit show at the time this was at the time when Pokemon and Digimon was in a rivalry

I actually had a toy from this series. It was a model of Godzilla that had a destroyed section of street attached to his foot. I played with that thing for multiple years following the series cancellation.
Three things at the time that were better than 1998 Godzilla movie:
- Godzilla the Animated Series
- Godzilla the soundtrack
- Godzilla the advertisements
Still the movie had moments and debatable when hardcore fans call it of the worst they can get too dramatic. Jean reno helped and such
God I live in NY, there was so much green everywhere during the advertisements.

Although the movie wasn’t great the animated series was amazing and I love the animated Godzilla design, an that’s coming from a lifelong Toho Godzilla fan !!!
Godzilla 98's animated design is fantastic, he's got so much personality. It doesn't hurt that his "must protect tiny squishy dad" attitude toward Nick is beyond adorable.

@@connorgolden4 People expected something closer to what the Toho films were. Which is basically what the show gave us. Personally I've mellowed out on the movie, I was a hater when it first came out but now I can appreciate it on it's own terms.

One episode that seemed touchy was when Godzilla met the Giant komodo dragon and made a family

Another Fact: Roland Emmerich didn’t want anything to do with the original Godzilla when writing his version and basically just used the name to pull people in to watch what he considered the superior version.

I remember watching an interview before the movie came out where he said "this isn't the old Godzilla. This is Godzilla of the 90s!" At the time i was so hyped when he said that, being a lifelong Godzilla fan. Now, I see how wrong that quote was.
EDIT: It was writer Dean Devlin who said this. But still, these guys didn't care about Godzilla until he became their job.

The best version of it is "No Zilla" by Blue Oyster Cult themselves :) They rewrote the lyrics (yes, this actually happened) about how crazy it was that the American film didn't use their song, which was a hit and still gets played on classic rock stations all the time.

@JapaneseGiant Lizard1234 I've always wanted another animated series that had a similar premise to this one but with the other classic monster and newer ones too but I think toho is alot more protective of the brand now so I don't see happening any time soon

When I learned that the voice of Nigel was SpongeBob, I’d imagine in spongebob’s voice screaming or saying ouch every time he got destroyed or rebuilt. Just imagine Godzilla the series but instead Nigel talks like spongebob
First off that ECW shirt is awesome! Secondly, I loved Godzilla The Series and I was a big fan of the show. One of the main reasons why I miss Fox Kids.
They should add "VS" in the title, just to clarify that the animated series has monster fights per episode. The Hanna-Barbera series didn't planned it first, because of Godzuki messed up the concept.
I want a remake of Godzilla Vs King Kong staring Dwane "The Rock" Johnson and Jack Black as they work together to defeat them and ruin Hollywood.

Loved the unique redesign and would've loved to have seen the sequel. Heard the direction they were going to take it was a better intro into king of all monsters.
Same. As a kid I used to rent the movie from blockbuster so much that my parents bought it to save us the trip 😂.
God I miss this show. I loved Godzilla as a kid and this show was the best thing ever. Wish it hadn’t been ended so quickly.
And as a fan I loved 1998, I loved the design as I’m a huge fan of dinosaurs. The weakness and lack of an atomic breath was disappointing but the show fixed that.
At least we have Godzilla Singular Point now

YES! Definitely my intro into the world of kaiju 😁 Followed this, other Richard Raynis productions, and whatever was on TV and me with a sketchbook in front of it 😆
Thank you for shedding some more light on the background of this show, I learned how to draw creatures from this show and the movie. one of my influences in getting into VFX and Animation now.
P.S. As much as I cringe watching the movie now, I loved it as a kid. Also my first intro into a Led Zeppelin riff from that Pudd Daddy/Jimmy Page Collab 🤣
Come on the movie wasn't that bad .It made my childhood along side the TV show .
And to think we never would've gotten this without the movie first. And now that I've rewatched the series, I have this newfound desire to go back and watch the movie
I forgot how much I loved this show as a kid. I loved the movie. Won cinimon twist at Taco Bell. My favorite episode was when Godzilla fights the Loch Ness Monster. I liked cuz it was misunderstanding. Nessy wanted her kidnapped baby back, she had no reason to cause destruction, she went crazy and fought Godzilla who was if memory serves was protecting Dr Nick from her. The mad scientist took her to lure Nessy out, I thought it was cool how they explained Nessy was a dinosaur who survived the ice age, and the episode ends with monster gratituded and mutual respect for helping a mother find her baby and return peacefully into the wild.
I always come back to this series every so often because it's great.
I own the whole series on dvd and I feel episodes are out of order and that some plots never got resolved meaning to me that there were more episodes planed
Maybe. A site google godzilla the series ultimate got the eps in right order. They were ordered 40 eps and did 40 but who knows

There were happy meal toys. I had a spinner toy with Godzilla wrapped around a skyscraper.
I got this series on DVD. An interesting thing i noticed is that H.E.A.T. seems to be the ones that actually stop the monsters. They study what they can gather and Godzilla more runs interference. I wonder if they were going for a smarter show or if the network censors didn't want Godzilla finishing the other monsters.
I've loved the Godzilla stuff since I seen the first full color Godzilla movie and as far as the animation I like both the Hanna-Barbera version and Godzilla the animated series.

If you look at the '98 movie as a remake to "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" it turns into a much better remake

I like 98 Godzilla, but in retrospect, I can understand why most didn't. It was my first Godzilla film.
Oh man I had some fond memories of this series. Cant believe its been so many years since I watched it. Some of the episodes i remember were the ones with the liaporodon, the giant bees, the mole creatures and the gigantic bird creature in south or central america.

It may not be clear by the credits, but when it comes to the writing two of the major creative forces were Robert N Skir & Marty Isenberg. As the series story editors they hired all of us, guided the story generation process, and shepherded all of the scripts from concept to final draft. They deserve a shout out!

I remember early internet leaks of the photos of Godzilla from the model they sent to companies for merchandising. Supposedly each company got different angles of the model and it was able to tell which company leaked the photos of the kaiju.

My intro to Godzilla was the 1998 and The Series which as a kid, I loved both. Although the Japanese Godzilla films are better than the American movies, the 1998 and The Series hold a special nostalgic place in my heart.
The 98 film and this show got me into Godzilla.
I still own the standard movie DVD, monster edition, and a few episodes from season 2, as well as an 11inch (still) roaring action figure from the movie. This was a huge part of my childhood

Pepezilla has in recent years created a mod for the game Ark:survival evolved where you can tame a full sized Zilla Jr. I remember watching all the updates on his work prior to release, it was a pretty dope time.
Zilla Jr. is still my favorite Kaiju to this day, the scrappy underdog who could very well stand toe-to-toe with the bigger slower kaiju like Destoroyah.

I loved that Godzilla movie and the series. It's design looked fast and powerful but I get people's distaste of it compared to the original. Wish I still had the toys from back then, because I had a few of them, especially the baby Godzilla's.

I liked the maturity of the show as well. The effort made in the writing involving the science and technology took it beyond just being for kids, and it was realistic to see the adults dealing with dating drama. LOVE the animated Godzilla design and abilities, it might be my favorite.

I think that I remember this airing on ABC Family Saturday mornings when I was in college.
Personally, my favorite Godzilla production (yet) is Godzilla Raids Again. Aside from no explanation for an island-hopping ankylosaurus kaiju, I loved that they treated Godzilla like a sentient natural disaster. When the reptile started approaching, local governments had to treat Godzilla like a hurricane or blizzard, with air raid sirens, and turning off the grid to reduce collateral damage to the infrastructure.
The series intro is LIT, like some Avengers kind of thing. Zilla Jr. is a total badass, doing what his biological father wasn't written to do: being Godzilla, and combining his size to the way he behaves with Nick being is adorable, although I think Zilla doesn't worry for humans at all unless they are his dad.
Zilla Jr. may not be the King of the monsters, but he could be considered the Prince.
The 90's was the Golden Age of Cartoons, and oh boy I loved this show, yes the soundtrack got me hooked on it,
Godzilla’s breath didn’t actually start at the tail until 2014. Everytime the back, the biggest spines, would glow. This was probably because that’s where they could easily draw in the effect or easily put in the lights. That’s what I think at least.
