omg.. one of my first games, this really gets me. I'm 31 now and can't imagine how long it has been since heard this sound track for the last time, gives me the chills. Back then no interwebs were available, I always felt I was the only one in the world playing this game or something.. great to see other minds on the internet having the same shared experience now :)
@100880015606906407635 I can truly understand what you mean. This was one of the not many games that I had on my first pc back in the early 1990s (along with Stunts, Prehistorik 2 and Prince of Persia). I literally spent my days on them with some friends. This one in particular was especially difficult to master...I never finished it but I enjoyed the music...hearing it again today brings a little tear to my eye ;( I miss the ingenuity and the joy of those days...
LoL, I know that feel. My old man was such a nerd for having this nostalgic game installed into his "IBM Compact" back in 90s... xD ...still having memories how we had to learn DOS commands to even launch games... such as F29 Retaliator, M1 Tank Platoon, Dyna Blaster (aka Bomberman), Mario is Missing, Flight Simulator... ...sigh... memories of nostalgia...
I loved this game sooooo much when I was young. And the soundtrack, simply amazing. I usually spent several minutes just at the menu listening to it and "watching" the clouds.
When you are 10-15 years old, everything really leaves you a mark. Going from beeper to sound card or from CGA monochrome to VGA 8bit,. was a real shock. I still can feel it.

I remember how I tried to record this on a cassette and timed those cuts from intro to subsequesnt menus exactly the way they are timed here. This fact alone just blew my mind. And that OST is still awesome after all those years.
You can cut out the first second (optional) and use this music from the video as an alarm clock. I tried it, is great! It even increases in volume gradually.
@@Luxylux ruclips.net/video/I_gB6JEmf-0/видео.html is an attempt of mine from when I binged the whole game many years ago. You can look up the sequence, from the top of my head (and after watching my other video) 1. Align yourself with the runway at 4000 ft, 2. Maintain 50% thrust until after landing, this ensures you don't drop from the sky from going too slow and makes going around possible. 3. Aim for the start of the runway, use air brakes to slow down to 200-300 kts. If you're too high or too fast, go around. 4. Deploy flaps below 250 and landing gear around 220. Use air brakes so you don't break them when the display turns brown. 5. After touch down apply brakes and set thrust to 0. I don't remember the exact speed at which flaps and landing gear break though :) but there are some other videos specifically für landing in this game.
This music always brings me back to playing this with my brother by connecting our computer with an ethernet cable so we could play head-to-head. He beat me everytime, but man... memories!
I allways wondered wich kind of tools were used to make these illustrations. It's hard to say if are taken from real photos or drawn from scratch.. many of dos games
At the time Deluxe Paint II was a widely used graphic editor. AFAIK they could scan drawings and use them as guides, but most of the work was drawn pixel by pixel.
The title screen image is based on an official concept image of the Lockheed ATF. My guess is that many of the images may be scans which they've cleaned up and colourized using Deluxe Paint.

Such a TERRIBLE flight simulator by comparison to almost any other flight sim. But by god, I played this for thousands of hours as a kid. I had FUN with it! Lots of fun. I even managed to beat it, weird as it was. I still remember the music to this day. Such an amazing soundtrack for such an average game. The flight mechanics were all kinds of wonky xD
@@rbdhack Really? I mean, the presentation was top-notch, but the flight mechanics were absolutely off-the-charts weird. I remember games like JET!, a PC-booter game, having better flight mechanics than F-29 Retaliator. And of course, the Falcon series were just superiour in every way. Especially Falcon 3.0 that came out just two years later than this. But maybe my perspective is a bit skewed. It has been nearly 35 years XD
@@rbdhack The plane would stay afloat at ridiculously slow speeds and if you did it right, you would just float vertically down to the ground. It was one of the easiest ways to land back then :)
I know I am answering to a 6 year old comment... I think DID were still doing a rehearse of what would become their flair of simulator games, and this one was basically a variation on Epic more than a flight sim. I had fun with it, and I have no doubt that Jetfighter II was richer at the same kind of game, but somehow this one felt more compact and more immediate. The presentation, as you said, was incredible. I think a similar game could be Comanche, though on that one you did not even have to worry about staying afloat.
