    I like this variation on the Philidor a lot. Have played it many times. If you check out Grandmaster games, you will find Azmaiparashvili has played this successfully. For a while, my personal name for it was the "skunk" because White often gets overexcited and attacks in ways (e.g., finds 0-0-0 with check very appealing) that just help Black develop in a queenless middle game (like a dog that has never met a skunk before). I think the variations I had the most trouble with were ones where White plays an early f4, but it has been a while since I've played it. I've been focusing more on the Modern Defense lately. (My rating is roughly around 1800 I think. It's been a long time since playing in a rated tournament.)

    • @journeytograndmaster
      @journeytograndmaster  18 дней назад

      @@philfrei1 totally agree! f4 is actually not that dangerous, you can ignore it in most of the cases and if they take - go for Ng4. But yeah, it's important to know a few things there.

    What this video shows is that in the hands of an IM who has prepared lines, even an inferior opening can work. Non-masters who try to play like this will simply get equal or inferior positions.

    • @journeytograndmaster
      @journeytograndmaster  19 дней назад +1

      I don't think that it's an inferior opening. On 2700+ level yeah, probably, but on a normal level where people just play chess without endless opening preparation it works very well (I play it for the last 10 years with great success). The important thing is to understand the ideas well.
      The engines says it's +0.3 for white on a high depth just as most of other "normal" openings.

    • @thegreatgazoo7579
      @thegreatgazoo7579 18 дней назад

      @@journeytograndmaster Ok, it is not as bad as I thought in the line where White captures immediately with 4. dxe5. "There is nothing to be afraid of in this endgame" is correct unless your opponent is Karpov at his prime. It is just a normal +0.3 as you say. Isn't the alternative 4. Nc3 a transposition to a normal Nimzovich Variation of the Philidor? That line is better for White it appears.
