  • The bison, or buffalo, was revered in Plains Indian culture.
Here, Lakota elder Pete Catches, Sr. tells a traditional story: how the bison and the Lakota came to be related. A clip from our documentary, Sacred Buffalo People with Georgia Fox, voiceover, Rita Holy Bull, singing a traditional song, and Laura Youngbird, animation artist.

This video brought tears to my eyes, because I was the last Lakota male to go to learn from Grandpa Pete. Petaja Yoha Mani (He Walks with Coals in His Hands.) The song the Lakota Women sings is the one my mother used to sing to use at times and she too has made her journey to the Spirit World.

Beautiful video, Rediris - Thank you :)
If elders were still respected in main stream society for their wisdom and experience and skills etc instead of being disregarded as a burden to be cast aside into the care of a nursing home or professional carers, in favour of career, money, house, car i.e to live the 'capitalist dream' what a wonderful world we could be living in today

If only we had asked them instead of always telling, instead of always interpreting life for them. And now they teach us . And now we must listen to their dance and poetry and spirit . All this will be life for us

Buffalo comes to Standing Rock ND. Many many people of many nations, from all the world gather to protest the pipeline. Over 100 people were arrested on Oct.27 2016. Buffalo brought their prayers for all to see in real time. Thank you GREAT SPIRIT

Thank you for sharing . The ancient wisdom is coming back. It s about sprituality , a spiritual being having a material experience. All around the world , the people have been silenced. To put power with religion, money and erase the Inner power of people. The awakening is going on now

Yes, you are correct ... JoJo Mama all Tribes that came in contact with the Buffalo became part of "the Way of Life". We Lakota are revealing our Tribal connection to the same "Way of Life." in the Prairies, Mountains, or where ever they roamed.

Indeed the Sacred Buffalo (Baaxpe'e Biishe' in Apsaalooke) was sacred to all Plains tribes. It doesn't apply to a single tribe. But to every tribe of the Great Plains. When people think of the Buffalo and tribes who hunted them. They always tend to think of only Lakota and Cheyenne when in fact, there are more than a dozen tribes who depended on, live by, followed and respected the Buffalo.

@firecrackerpackman Is Sara? This is the name my great grandmother was FORCED to choose from a book of christian names in assimilation school. I share her name, with a very strong lakota lastname, which had been "translated" into english decades before I was born. I am a proud Lakhota. Of all the things the Lakhota have given up as a people, I think that our 'christian names' should be the LEAST of your concerns.

The Indigenous People are such a beautiful and holy people. I hope the rest of humanity will be kind enough to stop and listen. The path of Humanity needs to follow the Indigenous peoples, not the Wallstreet Mafia. Our future depends on it!

I would go to the mountains drive to top highest one set to look out over golden fields, and blue skys. Oh days the buffalo would be in those fields of grass something about the area it cleared everything from the worldly ways of peace, strength, clarity, and a place of the sun with all that's there alive with the earth like something their with the buffalo.
