From Prison to Paradise Extraordinary 2,000 Mile Journey of Hope for 55 Rescued Monkeys

- "These young monkeys would have been subjected to decades behind bars in cramped stainless steel cages, forced to endure painful toxicology tests," said IDA president Scotlund Haisley. "Now they will have a life filled with fresh air, friends and freedom from harm."
The lab the monkeys came from had been repeatedly cited by the USDA for Animal Welfare Act violations and had a license to sell animals. If not for this rescue, these monkeys could very well have ended up in other labs that routinely perform extremely invasive or terminal experiments on long-tailed macaques. Published articles from 2010 describe experimentation ranging from brain lesions, invasive brain studies of auditory, motor and visual cortex, Ebola virus, stroke, plague and drug-induced seizures. These intelligent, social primates suffer when imprisoned for decades in stark lab environments. Monkeys often display clinical signs of depression and abnormal behavior including hair pulling, stereotypic circling and pacing, and even self mutilation.
The rescue was initiated by New York-based activist Camille Hankins, following an anonymous tip from a former animal caregiver at the recently closed lab. After negotiations with the company hired to liquidate the "assets" of the lab, a proposal to release the animals was accepted, with the crucial assistance of IDA pro bono attorney Kathryn Flood of the law firm Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney.
"We are proud to have played this significant role in helping to rescue these monkeys from the horrors of the lab," concluded Haisley. "These are the lucky ones. We are inspired to renew our commitment to end the institutionalized abuse that is animal experimentation."

I know this was years ago but Thank You for saving them and getting them to sanctuaries where they are free with their own kind building their own troops. When I saw those poor Rhesus Macaques hugging each other for comfort and out of fear it broke my heart. I love Macaques.

we are an animal protection organization and we saved these rats... yes ! from a small cell we moved him 2000 miles to another cell... a little bigger cell... but the money and funding we put into our personal accounts is several times bigger... lesson = throw some dust in the eyes of people that you do good and in return they blindly believe and therefore pay you huge sums of money... fake but legitimate business...

I withhold compliments because these animals really won't experience "freedom" - they simply can't. They may have no coping mechanism for the forest. The best you're doing for them is less abuse; presumably a lot less abuse but the emotional damage will determine that. Oklahoma isn't exactly where they're from... and they'll still be in cages.

Why didn’t they take off their collars? Why didn’t the sun light scare them and possibly cause vision trouble?
Who knows about the collars? But I do know they hold information about the tests performed and drugs/chemicals etc they were used for.
As for the sun and outdoors being too much, what you didn't get to see was the gradual integration from those cages to outside. They were actually slowly acclimated.
I wish they had shown that part. It's heartbreaking, but at the same time, an uplifting thing to witness.
I just wonder how many are still alive these 11 years later?

Would have liked to see them running around in their new environment.
They'd have gotten a lot more support if they would have bothered to let us see how they were doing after being freed to the nature reserve. In fact, if they had shown *any* video of the new shelter.. Simply asking for money without showing how it's going to help, doesn't cut it. I did actually scour their channel for ANY mention of the monkeys, but all I got were more rescue vids with appeals for money, and tons of vegan get togethers, spiritual gatherings, and more pleas for support.
Even PETA knows how raise donations, by longer videos on what they're doing, controversial though they may be, they work.
