    Just back from storm camping. Phew! Heaviest rain in the state where i camped. Flooded my camp area. Had trouble with fire getting wet coals (from flooding) so lifted fire onto concrete platform...found on opposite side of camp area. Gusting meant noise, tarp kiting, splashing in..! Tent tarp lower. No prob. Gt learning curve.

    Did this yesterday out in CB just I gave my tarp to someone with no shelter so I used a rain fly from a cheap Walmart tent I bought awhile ago. Rain has been pretty crazy in the Gunnison Valley.

    I like the A-frame style you used. We all have been in storms where the wind blows the rain sideways. This offers better protection than just a flat tarp.

    One way to combat a torn out grommet or no attachment site on a tarp is to take a smooth rock or golf ball. Take the rock or ball and encase it with the tarp, then use a clove hitch or any other constricting knot and cinch it at the base of the ball. Voila! a new grommet

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, most definitely! That is a great way to create a new grommet. Good tip to share, thanks for the comment!

      Hi Crickets Creations, thanks for watching! Yes, there are tons of natural sticks but the hiking poles are carbon fiber and weigh next to nothing. I just like them because they're easy to use but I will be replacing them this year. Hope your 2018 is starting off on a great note!

    Hey Man!
    I am flying into Denver 8/13 and am looking for a cool area to go to. I will be driving a capable 4x4 vehicle. Ideally, I would like to find a scenic series of fire roads or ATV tracks to travel along with suitable places to camp along them. I need to stay within 2 and a half hours of Denver, and will be out for 3 days.
    Thanks for any tips!

      Hi Mimi, I apologize for the delayed response as I just now saw your questions. This tarp is a brand called "Outdoor Products" and it's a coated tarp. I've had some people tell me the grommets rip out easily from this tarp but I've never had an issue. I love it, great tarp that is easy to work with. Here's the link to the product, I have the 7'x9' size - www.rei.com/product/842320/outdoor-products-coated-tarp

      Chevy Van Travel
      It's worth spending extra money on a nice tarp like those from Bushcraft Outfitters USA. They have webbing loops instead of grommets that always tear out eventually. Also, I highly recommend tying taughtline hitch knots instead of using those plastic guy line adjusters. Also use small sticks as toggles whenever possible. Makes undoing or redoing your rigging faster than you would believe.

      bobinmissouri Make you a frame out of pvc pipe. Then toss you a tarp over it, fit it to frame with bungee cords. Get a roll of that mylar covered bubble wrap at lowes and use that for insulation. Extend the tarp over tailgate and you will have a mud room. ruclips.net/video/Jni3E67sDsI/видео.html

      What he needs to do is drive all the stakes first. He can adjust their positions later if necessary. Then bungie the back corners of the tarp to the back corner stakes, then bungie a front corner to one side of his SUV, then clamp to the roof rack, then bungie the other other front corner to the SUV and finally rig his hiking pole. That way he can hold the tarp at all times and keep it from flying around while he is putting it up.
