That speech at the end, man... Almost had me in tears throughout. Towards the end of it they turned into more tears of laughter resulting from you likening your channel to a communal toilet but... still. The sentiment remains my friend. Your work continues to bring a smile to my face. Please, keep it up.
It was actually about a week ago that I introduced RCR to my young niece and nephew. They both adore it. And ask to play it every time I come over. That and MGS VR Missions, because I'm a terrible uncle. (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Ha, I'd like to think so. But their mother doesn't like them playing video games at all. I just love how they refer to the games as "the fighting one" and "the one with the guy in a box".
I'm one of those watching you for the first time, this video was really entertaining! I'm gonna sub and watch your previous content now while I'm at it.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it and I hope you enjoy the others! Watch out that you don't scraoe yourself against the old ones because they are pretty rough.
i really, really hope arcsys eventually translates all of the old technos games we never got, some of them hold up super well or at least would be interesting to explore
First video of yours I've seen. Thank you for giving this series of games such a fitting tribute, and most importantly for giving a shit. Thanks so much for that.
I came here after playing River City Girls to learn the past of it's games, and I hope you agree, but River City Girls seem to be an amazing addition to the franchise, even tho I never played any of it's past games. Love the video! Keep it up! ^^
I recently picked up and got back into this classic. Playing it again on switch with multiplayer online had me trying to get others to see what I see in this awesome series but no one around me seemed to be interested. This led me to believe that maybe it wasn't as good of a game as I thought it was and that maybe I'm just weird because even other gamers I know look at this game and series as obsolete or never heard of it. Watching this channel opened my eyes to a fan base that ACTUALLY GIVES A SHIT about this series and I feel such relief to know that we outchea and hope this legacy can continue to live on. Thank you SoberDwarf.
I find my self getting excited every time I see a soberdwarf in my feed. This is the quality content I love. Also, I have ad block off just for you. It's the only way I can support you for now. I'm glad to see you doing well, you look great. From one stranger to another, I love you, man.
@@SoberDwarf you have not put a single video I have not enjoyed, regardless if I played the game or not. Your format keeps me captivated and engaged, so keep chasing that passion, it suits you. Obviously I wish you got the attention on here you deserve, but I'm happy to see your passion over trends. It is honestly a refreshing break, and that is the reason why I get so excited for your videos. And I stick around because of you. Be confident in yourself and your content.
Nice, glad to see you back. Good pick on the subject matter too. RCR is fantastic, and with River City Girls right around the corner you couldn't have picked a better time.
The River City Girls announcement was what convinced me to dust off this script. I originally wrote it back after the River City Ransom Underground release but I wasn't as satisfied with it back then. But thankfully more information came to light after the RCRU's release and made for a better video.
Yeah, the trailer for RCG made me jump back on RCRU with a buddy and finish up our co-op playthrough we had started forever ago. We're both pretty excited for it's release.
The amount of love and attention to detail put into River City Girls got me nostalgic for the hours and hours I put into playing RCR Advance and made me want to have a good look at the Kunio-Kun series as a whole and everything I'd missed from it. That brought be here. Turns out I missed a lot of dodgeball. Anyway, you earned a subscriber today, and also made me want to go play World Cup Soccer again.
RCRU is a really solid game and I'm looking forward to RCG! Wayforward always make decent to great games (I liked Double Dragon Neon, alright!), so I'm very hopeful. Like everyone in the early 2000s, I discovered emulation and, being a UK kid where the NES wasn't popular, dove into Nintendo's early library to gobble up every piece of media I could. RCR was one of the games that really stood out to me. It's depth and controls were really surprising and polished for a NES game, it felt more like something you'd find on the SNES (and I mean that as a compliment!). RCR really was ahead of its time. If RCR never existed and an indie dev released it today, I reckon it would still be a hit. Also I know you hear this a lot, but I'm always shocked how few subs you have. I'll just have to keep spreading the word until everyone sees your great game docs ;D
Thank you! RUclips almost ate your comment for some reason, but I'm glad I caught it! Yeah, RCR was well ahead of it's time. The comparison to Yakuza isn't unwarranted and that took some time to get rolling itself. Even then there are a lot of difference that still makes RCR worth it. Hopefully you got to enjoy and play RCG!
I really wanted to play TRoRI for the video but sadly I didn't have the budget to try it out myself, and I couldn't speak on it with any authority. I am really glad that it comes recommended and I will grab it when I can!
Great video, thanks, man. Let me clear few moments for the sake of completness. Renegade a.k.a. Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun starts the series. River City Ransom a.k.a. Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari split it in two sub-series: "Kouha" (2nd grade of highschool) and "Downtown" (3rd grade). And no, Downtown is not going after Kouha, parallel universes here. Kouha games are: Renegade, Dodge Ball, Nintendo World Cup, Kunio-no Nekketsu Soccer League (World Cup 2), Ike! Ike! Nekketsu Hockey-bu, Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu, Street Basket: Ganbare Dunk Heroes. Also SNES DodgeBall, Shodai and Shin Kouha. And Double Dragon 2 GameBoy is actually a Kouha spin off in Japan. Downtown are: RCR, Super Sports Challenge, Crash'n Boys, Nekketsu Jidaigeki and others. On 3ds there was a clearly reboot. Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun SP = Renegade SP. Tokyo Rumble - it's sequel, Riki Densetsu - prequel. Then they merge Downtown into Kouha, so basically River City Ransom SP 3DS is sequel for Tokyo Rumble, then goes Super Sports Special, then River City Melee. Actually, japanese title for River City Girls is Nekketsu Kouha Gaiden: River City Girls. So bear in mind, that not all games connected with each other, there are at least 2 sub-series and their spin offs. Also, you can count western releases as another sub-series because of rewrited plot. More over there are 3 Renegade games: Renegade, Target Renegade and Renegade 3. P.S. Sorry for my bad english.
Your english is pretty good, and thank you for that. I wish I had you around when I was making this video because trying to find a good timeline was extremely difficult.
My childhood best friend (who died a few months ago) and I used to rent River City Ransom (and Super Dodge Ball!) all the time when we were kids. I can't count the number of hours we grinded through this badboy. It never got old! Don't even get me started on Super Dodge Ball! Our sessions on that were bruuuutal! And the free-for-all mode was goddam bonkers af!
One of my fondest memories of the series was playing a translated ROM of the Feudal Japanese spin-off with a friend. We didn't know where to go or what to do but we would have fun just going around and beating people up. RCR was just one of those games where you didn't need to beat it, you could just have fun playing it, which is amazing. I'm glad you were able to have that experience with your friend! Also, yes, Bean Ball was crazy fun!
I am just thankful for the support I have. Anyone else that comes along for the ride is more than welcome, but I'm here for the people that are already here for me.
Personally, I would say start with Yakuza 0 or Yakuza Kiwami. I know Kiwami is part of the humble monthly deal right now so you should get it pretty easily.
First time watching the channel. I am a long time fan of the Kunio/RCR series and it's not common to find anyone talking about the series in detail, nice work! So I had to comment something. Not to mention talking about RCR Underground. Sometimes I just feel that not many people played it, or know about it. And it really was a fun game! Sure it had its problems, there are some things that I didn't like. Such as the wanted system, some characters feeling much better than others, and I also think the story was bad, but still a good game. The fighting is just too much fun and I've given it more hours than to most indie games. And the game looks great, just like you said on the video. I feel like it pushed the original chibi sprite style to its limits. Now that River City Girls is coming soon, it's interesting to read people's comments about it. They are often like "I was a huge fan of RCR on the NES so I have to try this!" while usually none of them mention Underground, at all, sadly. And of course, endless Scott Pilgrim comparisons. But it seems that many people are looking forward to RC Girls and it has tons of fan art and everything. So the game already has a lot better starting situation than Underground did (also helps that it comes from WayForward, a well known developer). And of course it is a HUGE plus that the game will release on consoles, unlike Underground. And one more thing, as far as I know the series hasn't had production values like this before (full voice acting, animated cutscenes and more). The entire series maybe will become more known with this, I think its going to be the first Kunio game for many people. Hopefully RC Girls will do well, I am super looking forward to it. Hoping to see many more Kunio games in the future. Thanks for the retrospective!
Thank you for the comment! RUclips almost ate it but glad I was able to catch it! And yeah, I'm really happy to hear the success that RCG had received and I'm glad WayForward was there to give the game the push it needed. I haven't had the chance to play it yet but I'm really looking forward to it when I do!
I was initially apprehensive to watch this entire video due to the length but oh WOW was proven wrong. Haven’t heard of you until tonight but I’m for sure following you now! Here’s hoping river city girls is gonna be radical
Hey Sober, this comment is more general than to this video so I apologize for whatever confusion that lends: Just wanted to say I only recently found your stuff and have only 'watched' a select few of your videos thus far (Okami, God Hand, This) but I wanted to thank you for creating. Also by 'watched' I mean I actually haven't 'seen' your stuff yet, I plan on marathoning them at another date, but tl;dr I podcast youtube videos at work sometimes and stumbled across your content so I've podcasted, but not 'seen'. Unnecessary information. I just wanted to say thank you, keep up the great work (assuming you enjoy compiling this information and exploring creators history etc), and I adore just how you format this stuff. The information is a given, but I enjoy the good you find in various aspects of games, like God Hand's entirely unique driving force of being the creator's game and made for their biases (I love that damn game), or your line at the end about experience building character- that statement really bookends your topics and how you drag things down to the human level for the creators or the players (usually creators from what I've seen)- it sits well. Rather barren ramble here that can be summed up as "Great stuff!" but I made a note at work about a week back that said to send some words your way since I know how vital comments on a publicly presented piece can be from my own experiences. Here's to you, man. Have a good one.
Thank you so much for this sincere compliment, it genuinely means a lot to me. I apologize it took me this long to get to it. These videos are very much a passion project for me. Game preservation is important to me, and I don't mean that in just having a bunch of ROMs but also things that aren't often discussed like the development history or their stories. I think a lot of people see the end product and forget that there are often very human motivations and experiences that are built around them. Or they view game design as just a bunch of mechanics of do and don't not realizing that the majority of the time games can be made to invoke very real feelings in others. I think those experiences are just as important to preserve as the games themselves. It's not something I see many preservationist or historians do so I feel like if that is something I'm able to give to the world, I'm happy to do it. Also, don't worry about not "watching" videos; I mean, I put a lot of effort into the editing (as I do pretty much every other aspect of the process) but as long as people enjoy them, that's all that matters to me!
Your Videos are just always a pleasure to watch :D In some months I hopefully will be able to support you as well. P.S. Thank you for your tribute to all of us who can't really grow a beard. xD
I'm just glad I have people watching and enjoying it; that's the most important part. Anything more than that is extra. Also, I just want it known that you can be a dwarf while not having a beard and remaining sober.
Another great video as always! :) I know I’m just another guy on the other side of a screen, but I wanted to say I’m proud of you. The work that you’ve put into not only the channel but into improving yourself is inspiring. I can’t wait to see what you accomplish going forward. On the video, RCR is one of my favorite games. I played it so much growing up with my brothers. And I’ve even gone back and played it with my son. It’s one of those titles I can keep going back to. I’m excited to see how River City Girls turns out. And this is the first I’ve heard of that River City Knights game as well. I’ll have to do some digging. ;)
I had heard of River City Knights but I had no idea it had a western release. I was really surprised but never seen a copy out in the wild, which is a shame. I'm going to have to do some digging as well and grab a copy before they get stupid rare. Also, thank you. It took a bit to get me there, mainly after 10+ years of stubborness and genuinely not caring about my body, but I'm glad that it's finally all getting taken care of.
i was late to River City Ransom. First exposed to the beat-em up feeling with Scott Pilgrim i wish Scott Pilgrim was expanded upon. I also was familiarized with it with Code Monkeys the G4 series that heavily borrowed movement and sprites from RCR. I feel like there were many Newgrounds clones that the reference went over my head but were great.
I think just because it was so obscure, a lot of people after the NES era didn't know about it until they either heard about it from Scott Pilgrim or if before then, from Seanbaby. I also remember on Newgrounds that one of the most popular music videos back in the day (Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger) used RCR as the main sprite.
@@SoberDwarf Nice! you know the exact Newgrounds video! Code Monkeys was the best... the way they punch, smoke bongs, hump things, and look. God I loved that show, especially as a indie game developer. Half of the jokes probably wouldn't work today in this PC world. Man, I wish you already had another video ready to go. I love your content and I love that you comment and interact with us/me.
One minor thing: You present the birth of the Kunio-kun series *after* you discuss 1987's Double Dragon. This is a little misleading. Kunio got his start in Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun (Renegade) in 1986, which was one of the most important games ever made due to adding a whole new axis to the player's movement and paving the way for a decade-long beat-'em-up renaissance. Double Dragon owes its existence to Kunio, not vice-versa.
That is fair, though from my research, while Renegade was definitely the first game in the series, the concept of making it an actual series wasn't conceived (or viable) for Technos until after the success of Double Dragon. While I couldn't find detailed numbers, Technos wasn't a financial stable or really that well known of a developer until then, which is why I placed the emphasis on Double Dragon, then the Kunio-Kun series because that was most likely people's experience with Technos/Kunio even if the history is different. I do believe I state later in the video that Renegade was a prequel to RCR. You totally are correct though. Just sort of explaining my reasoning for the pacing.
I’ve never heard of RCR before this video. It looks like a good game and I’ll have to give it a try. I remember having Super Dodgeball Advance for GBA when I was younger haha.
I hear that a lot that many people never hear about the games I talk about, so I'm glad I can introduce people to them, though it makes me worry what other games that I feel were fairly well known that people might have missed out on.
Nice job on the weight loss! I've lost about 35 pounds total myself this year, joined the YMCA back in January, and finally stopped drinking soda. Been stalled since then for about 2 months though. I don't have an issue with motivation with going to the gym, but stopping myself from eating my normal junk food is harder, haha. That Rygar reboot was great! We wouldn't have God of War without it I bet.
You know, I didn't even think of that about Rygar. That was released like 3 years before God of War. That would be crazy if true! Yeah, I lost about 60 lbs from my heaviest, 45 lbs when I started tracking it. I have been sort of stuck around the 210-215 mark. I have been trying different things to get me past the plateaus. Weight loss is so strange once you get into the meta of it.
Realizing rewatching this that I commented before but not a word about this video itself so why not double up. It still blows my mind that RCR or I guess Kunio-kun is an expansive series because my childhood only knew of like 2 of the american releases and most of my adulthood knew of a few others- then all of a sudden I realize it's 50+ strong and I'm left baffled because there's quality here- RCR or Dodgeball were great times, in a modern context River City Girls is making waves- and we got a pittance out of the ocean available lol. Happens. I really should play RCR, every second of it entices me and I have little reason not to now. Could be a good build up to buying RC girls :P Can toss in RCRU if I'm feelin' it. The video should have been called the Dodgeball Retrospective lol. Ah. A story of passion and ongoing appreciation. Apt for your channel to tackle too, a passion project appreciated by the likes of us.
First time watching your channel. Good and entertaining video!! Renegade got pretty popular also, that got lot of computer ports and even his own spin off series. Pretty sure you are now aware of the Kuniokun/double dragon bundle with translation to all japan exclusive famicom titles, and the definitive remake of RCR for the 3DS.
First off, goodness, you lost a lot of weight! It looks like you worked very hard. Congrats man! And I'm still not used to seeing you without the big shaggy beard. You look a lot younger without the extra weight and beard, but honestly I still prefer your big shaggy beard. To me it suited you, but everyone has a different perspective amd what matters most is your own perspective. Anyway, this is a great video that I've been wanting to comment to very soon after you uploaded it, but didn't have the time until now. I actually didn't play River City Ransom back in the old NES days. Back in '89. instead of playing River City Ransom, I was playing The Adventures of Bayou Billy. lol Yup, when you mentioned that game, it flooded me with nostalgia! I honestly liked and enjoyed that game a lot back in the day. When it comes to beat 'em ups, back in the '80s, I was playing Double Dragon on the Atari 7800, Kung-Fu Master on the Atari (I forget if it was the 2600 or 7800), and going to the arcade in '89 to play Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the arcade game (one of my favorite beat 'em ups of all time). Then in the early '90s I started playing the Streets of Rage and Final Fight series'. The Streets of Rage is my favorite beat 'em up series of all time! So River City Ransom wasn't on my radar until later years. I hope to get River City Ransom: Underground at some point, in addition to River City GIrls. Speaking of which, River City Girls was released earlier this month and I hope you get to play and enjoy it (if you haven't already)!
Beard had to go because trying to exercise with a lot of facial hair is miserable. It gets sweaty and you have to clean it, then it dries out and feels like having a dried bush on your face. I didn't mind the beard but honestly having gone without it for awhile, it does feel a bit better, even if it definitely makes me look less like a dwarf. (Also, I'm not ready to look 50 yet.) RCR was definitely looked over back in the day. I mean, between all the beat em' ups being released around then and just how weird RCR was in comparison. Like, an open world Beat'em Up investigative RPG? Most people just want to play a beat'em up to beat people up, not have to manage stats and stuff, so I don't begrudge anyone from overlooking anything about it, but it is definitely worth looking into. I haven't had a chance to play River City Girls, just not in the budget, sadly. I am really glad to hear that it is doing well and that a lot of people have been enjoying it!
Renegade IS a Kunio game. It's original name is Nekketsu Kouha Kunio Kun, where Kunio is the hero and Riki (the player 2 in RCR) is the 1st level boss.
I absolutely LOVED underground. a shame it had so much trouble being overshadowed by mighty9. I still wish it can get ported to consoles even though they financially cant. fantastic content.
I genuinely feel bad that underground ended up how it did because for me it's entirely deserving of so much more than even what Mighty No. 9 had accomplished. Just so much love put into that game.
RCR was thee greatest NES game of all time. You mentioned a remake of the original. I would love some more info on that: IE, what system(s), official title, or link. I tried searching for "river city ransom remake" and I'm not finding it. Definitely going to go by River City Girls - that looks awesome.
Specifically on the remake: 28:04. I also want to try out the fantasy RPG one. I could only find info for it being on the DS. Will have to dig out the DS. Wish it had some ports to other systems, but oh well.
There were two remakes of the original. River City Ransom EX for the GBA and (the one you are probably looking for) is River City: Rival Showdown for the 3DS. I never saw a copy out in the wild but found it online for a fairly reasonable price if you're still looking for it. I definitely want to try out the fantasy RPG one though I haven't had much luck of seeing it at my local stores.
@@SoberDwarf Ah. I played (I think I still have the cartridge somewhere) the GBA one. Didn't realize that was the one you were talking about. However, I don't think I've played or even heard of the Rival Showdown one. I will have to look that one up.
I played Super Dodge Ball in the Arcade in Michigan, plus it's available in Hamster's Arcade Series for download on modern consoles in full English... so I'm pretty sure it had a western release in some capacity.
Do you remember if it was the original version or the Neo Geo version? Neo Geo games typically were in full english as part of a policy of SNK. As far as I am aware, the original arcade never had an American release, at least as far as all my research had shown. That would have been awesome if there was though!
@@SoberDwarf This was back in the late 80s, and I've never heard of or seen the Neo Geo version until recently. Also the Hamster version I bought on PS4 is the same as I remember. Maybe it was an extremely limited release like Splatterhouse, (a cabinet right next to it) or maybe that arcade was just that cool to get games like it? Needless to say I spent a lot of time and quarters there!
LITERALLY got to play this game a handful of times before my parents caught on how violent it was and sold it and I still remember how awesome it was u could just pick up a rock and throw it I mean that was revolutionary at the time and also seemed like every time I played id find something new just the simple fact rocks were a weapon... I mean come on
I get that maybe Paul looked a bit too much like little Mac but River City Girls 2 (love that game) really shoudnt have black washed him. Not to mention clothing and other stuff. Looks waaaaay too different, may as well be another random dude also called Paul.
found out that some of the games that i thought we never got... those dodgeball games were called another name. XS Junior League Dodgeball was the dodgeball psx game
Sorry to be that guy, but Cyndi and Roxy arent Kyoko and Misako. They're the dumb localized names for Mami and Hasebe. And a recent interview actually revealed they'll be in RCG and might have a conflict with Kyoko and Misako!
I can understand that. Sorry for the error because looking through the timeline and having to comb through all the games we didn't release to get the lore was quite difficult. I know a few games bridged that connection but that could have also been a translation error on the localizer's part. Also it doesn't help that there are a lot of side-canon things like RCRU that muddies the water. Glad I've been corrected though!
Oh Hey I was just watching the resident evil 1.5 video. Wasn't aware it was possible to shave a dwarf's beard, I just assumed those were has hard as steel.
I'm not sure if you are saying that I now look like I'm 10 years old, or that I used to look 50, but either way I'll take it as a compliment! It's amazing what losing 60lbs will do; and some of it wasn't even hair!
It's a shame what happened with the music licensing fiasco with RCRU, the original OST they made for the game was so much better I feel but they did good with a bad situation. I can't remember the full details of what happened, but I'm sure a cursory handful of searches would give a full detail of what happened.
Yeah, it was quite a mess. For posterity, I felt it worth mentioning but didn't want to get into all the details of it because frankly, it's not worth digging up that old dirt and getting in that drama. Especially considering the majority of people who made RCRU just wanted to move on. Still hated that it happened to them though.
Funnily enough, this franchise instead reminds me of Bully which had the same theme about high schoolers going fight with other gangs, even Bully had their take of a dodgeball minigame.
I totally would bet that they had drawn some inspiration from it. It's sort of hard not to make the comparison considering the game's setting at least.
It is. I *almost* made a video on that, then I started thinking about River City Ransom, started doing some research and this video happened instead. Yakuza will come some other time!
It's super weird. To be honest, I don't really notice it either, I still look down and see the same body I've been seeing forever, and even in pics it's like "well, not *that* much has changed". Then other people say stuff and it just feels like they are being polite. I'll have to try on some older clothes when I can get to the back of my closet.
FYI if anyone is looking for a game that is greatly inspired by RCR - store.steampowered.com/app/846110/The_friends_of_Ringo_Ishikawa/ sooooooooooooooo good and he's sort of making another game inspired but what was mention in this video with his father.
Misako and Kyoko are not Cindy and Roxy. In fact, Hasebe is Roxy and Cindy is Mami, so the main girls in the River City Universe are actually some bitchy girls in River City Girls. Misako and Kyoko only appeared in that SNES game.
It would be great if you could a video on Chrono Cross. Not Chrono Trigger. That one is well recognized, but I would put Cross up against any console jrpg of its era and it gets no love.
I agree, Crono Cross I think often gets overshadowed by Chrono Trigger and I think the majority of it get put off because it doesn't feel like a great 'sequel' in terms of story but it is an amazing game. One of the reasons I've been hesitant to talk about it is because Satchbag's Goods did an *amazing* analysis of Chrono Cross and I don't think anything I can do would even compare to that. Quite possibly my favorite video of his.
I’m hoping River City Girls succeeds big. I don’t know if this is rational but I’m concerned that it will become a source of drama regarding feminism or whatever. “This game is misogynist!” “This game is SJW crap! “Playing a woman is misogynist because enemies are beating her!” “Playing as a woman is bad because they’re taking our games away!” “The girls’ skirts are too short!” “The girls’ skirts are too long!” And while this will likely be 3% of observers at most, it will get disproportionate media attention.
I heard murmurings of that in some communities but typically, I just ignore discourse like that. It's just the 'popular' thing for people stir the pot with because of our current political climate but you have to let a game be a game and speak on it's own merits, and try to stand above all of it. Still, as of writing, it seems that River City Girls had done pretty well for itself and I'm glad to hear that!
Dude... this is incredibly comprehensive!
You should have 50-100x as many subs as you do, these documentaries are great. Really enjoying your channel!
That speech at the end, man...

Towards the end of it they turned into more tears of laughter resulting from you likening your channel to a communal toilet but... still.

I love this game...
I can't watch this now due to prior obligations.
But you can bet that I will be back for this ASAP.
No rush! It'll be here when you get back! Unless youtube decides to hit it with copyright, then /shrug.
Okay, finally back!

Also, I have ad block off just for you. It's the only way I can support you for now.
I'm glad to see you doing well, you look great.
From one stranger to another, I love you, man.
Thanks so much! I genuinely feel a lot better to! Also, I'm always glad to see your comment and I hope that I always live up to the hype!
I see you're gearing up for your Dollar Shave Club promo.
Funnily enough, I ended up using a razor kit I got off of a promo like... 2 years ago.
Amazingly well done video, friend.
Thank you!
Amazing job on this video. First-time watcher, and I'm impressed!
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Love your videos! Glad to see a new one!
Thanks! I hope you enjoyed it!
One of the finest games from my childhood. I loved it, still do!
Another game in the style of River City Ransom, Yakuza, and Shenmue, is The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa. It's an amazing experience.
Thank you so much for making this video. As a huge Kunio kun fan I'm so glad this exists!
Thank you so much for the comment!
River City Girls is out!
Update: There's a dodgeball arena.
I still haven't had the chance to play it, but now that there is dodgeball, I'm in.
You deserve way more subs.
I am just thankful for the support I have. Anyone else that comes along for the ride is more than welcome, but I'm here for the people that are already here for me.
I thought I was the only one that see the similarity between river City Ransom and Yakuza.
Btw great video, you are one of the best on RUclips
Thank you so much! Yeah, I know that Yakuza gets a lot of comparisons to Shenmue (for good reason) but I had always seen it more inspired by RCR.
That makes me want to play Yakuza. What game should I start with?
Personally, I would say start with Yakuza 0 or Yakuza Kiwami. I know Kiwami is part of the humble monthly deal right now so you should get it pretty easily.
Love the new look! Cheers. ☺️
Thanks as always!
Beat em ups aren't really my thing, but it was so fun to hear you gushing about it :)
I am glad you enjoyed it!
I was initially apprehensive to watch this entire video due to the length but oh WOW was proven wrong. Haven’t heard of you until tonight but I’m for sure following you now! Here’s hoping river city girls is gonna be radical
Yeah, I'm sure a lot of people get intimidated by the length but I'm glad you gave it a chance!
Hey Sober, this comment is more general than to this video so I apologize for whatever confusion that lends:
Just wanted to say I only recently found your stuff and have only 'watched' a select few of your videos thus far (Okami, God Hand, This) but I wanted to thank you for creating.
Loved this game.
It’s worthy of the love. :)
Super dodgeball? Yeah I hear it’s good.
How do I play Scott Pilgrim the Game now that PSN is down? I had it on my PS3 that I sold. I tried playing it on a PS3 emulator but it was broken.
I am a huge fan of the series and this video was really a good watch. I am glad to see people adore the Kunio series.
P.S Cute cat.
@@SoberDwarf Makes sense to me. Double Dragon did great internationally and I'm sure enabled a lot of projects.
I was NOT prepared for that emotional gut punch with tge Xenogears track at the end. 😢
I'm pretty sure you could put Faraway Promise in anything and it would make it 20x more poignant. I absolutely love that song.
my first time.... great job love the vid, good fun good game good job. River Girls Forever
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! River City Girls Forever!
Your videos are amazing!
You're brea-... err amazing!
The best video on here along with the Final Fantasy 14.
Great vídeo i am from colombia first Time watching your vídeo great content thank you
Nice job on the weight loss!
@@SoberDwarf The Rygar reboot and God of War are so similar, I just can't see how the God of War devs weren't inspired by it.
Subbed dude... great video on a truly great game...
First time watching your channel. Good and entertaining video!!
Renegade got pretty popular also, that got lot of computer ports and even his own spin off series.
Pretty sure you are now aware of the Kuniokun/double dragon bundle with translation to all japan exclusive famicom titles, and the definitive remake of RCR for the 3DS.
this game is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun
once I played this?
I was HOOKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
31:00 Love the pokemon snap 2 shoutout! Someday brother, someday!
My only regret is that there won't be a way to go to blockbuster and print out tiny stickers of the pictures I take.
(Also, I'm not ready to look 50 yet.)
RCR was definitely looked over back in the day.
I remember playing one of these games on the Gameboy games on the DS
Renegade IS a Kunio game. It's original name is Nekketsu Kouha Kunio Kun, where Kunio is the hero and Riki (the player 2 in RCR) is the 1st level boss.
Great Video - Now it's Odama time GameCube
WITH PUNS
👍Thumb up for the Stop Skeletons from Fighting short 👍👍
Who's the brighter hidden gem:
Kunio-kun
Or SoberDwarf??
Thanks for this brilliant piece of gaming history~
I mean, I'm biased but I'm definitely going to say Kunio-Kun. I think my videos are pretty great but I didn't make Super Dodge Ball... yet.
I loved the GBA version.
Right now I'm playing City Girls 2 and its awesome, but it's awesome to know about underground
Awesome video , could you add a list of all games or way to get all possible games in physical ?
Hey man this video is amazing! I can’t believe I knew nothing of this franchise. Which is your favorites of the beat em ups games in this franchise?
LITERALLY got to play this game a handful of times before my parents caught on how violent it was and sold it and I still remember how awesome it was u could just pick up a rock and throw it I mean that was revolutionary at the time and also seemed like every time I played id find something new just the simple fact rocks were a weapon... I mean come on
New fan of the channel here. Your stardew valley video is lit
I wondered why i'd been seeing less of you recently... SoberElf
Them's fightin' words!
I've never played the River City games, but after seeing this I'll probably pick up at least one of the games.
Also, holy fuck you shaved!
I miss NES so much
It was amazing. I always love it when I can go back and play some old titles for a video.
Nice.
Nice!
Oh Hey I was just watching the resident evil 1.5 video. Wasn't aware it was possible to shave a dwarf's beard, I just assumed those were has hard as steel.
It's all the alcohol I don't drink that makes my beard soft and pliable and able to be shaved.
You look 20 years younger!♥
I'm not sure if you are saying that I now look like I'm 10 years old, or that I used to look 50, but either way I'll take it as a compliment! It's amazing what losing 60lbs will do; and some of it wasn't even hair!
@@SoberDwarf congratulations. Dwarfs need to tame their beards every once in awhile!
I know I'm late to this video, but are we just going to ignore Ryan Butt, Sega Pro at 11:52?
Yakuza is just amazing
It is. I *almost* made a video on that, then I started thinking about River City Ransom, started doing some research and this video happened instead. Yakuza will come some other time!
@@SoberDwarf was fun learning about river city ransom too bro. I'm a die hard yakuza fan. Judgment was amazing btw
Losing a lot of weight quickly is weird, innit?
In my case I didn't even notice. Only other people did. Then my old clothes started fitting again.
BARF!
BARF!
BizARF!
You missed all of the Kunio-kun games. Especially titles like River City: Rival Showdown.
rewatching this, man the comment about pokemon snap 2 not coming out any time soon aged.
FYI if anyone is looking for a game that is greatly inspired by RCR - store.steampowered.com/app/846110/The_friends_of_Ringo_Ishikawa/ sooooooooooooooo good and he's sort of making another game inspired but what was mention in this video with his father.
I saw TFoRI, but didn't have a chance to play it myself so I couldn't speak for it. I am definitely glad to hear about that.
Better late than never!
Who is this man!!!
Oh. He's someone who gives a sh*t. Of course.
Yakuza or 龍が如く is my River City Ransom or ダウンタウン-熱血物語!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Misako and Kyoko are not Cindy and Roxy. In fact, Hasebe is Roxy and Cindy is Mami, so the main girls in the River City Universe are actually some bitchy girls in River City Girls. Misako and Kyoko only appeared in that SNES game.
One day I will get my Pokemon Snap 2...one day...
I hope you do, love!
i fuckin love rcr
RCR is amazing!
I need underground on switch NOW
Yes!
@@SoberDwarf The design of battles interfaces, levelling system, and the slowness of it are the culprits to me.
We can all give a shit, together, on this show. Like a shitshow, wait, wait that's another thing, oh shit.
Is that what happened? Your beard turned into a cat?
It was actually a cat the entire time.
Pokemon snap 2 coming April 30 2021
One of the times I am glad to be proven wrong.
I wore this game out when I 1st got it on the NES! And I'm not even a fan of beat 'em up's.
I think RCR stands out because it's so different than your usual beat em' ups, especially for that era. It's crazy how ambitious it was for the NES.
Anyone played Stay Cool Kobayashi?
I’m hoping River City Girls succeeds big. I don’t know if this is rational but I’m concerned that it will become a source of drama regarding feminism or whatever.
“This game is misogynist!”
“This game is SJW crap!
“Playing a woman is misogynist because enemies are beating her!”
“Playing as a woman is bad because they’re taking our games away!”
“The girls’ skirts are too short!”
“The girls’ skirts are too long!”
And while this will likely be 3% of observers at most, it will get disproportionate media attention.
What about River city rampage?
You might be thinking of Retro City Rampage.
Ryan Butt? That's an unfortunate last name...
Yeah, I mean, I would be upset too if I had that name. I wonder where he is now.
