Shin pain is common for beginner skiers, yes. You can make sure that the only thing inside your ski boot is a long sock (up to your knee) and nothing else. Not your tights, nor any part of your ski pants. Having the metal clip that is on some ski pants exactly on the point where you lean forward to your boot can be very painful indeed.
