@@IBZogTheGreat great to see someone added to this weapon I learned how to use it to teach a friend who dropped it but honestly I still knew nothing at the time and now am enjoying the weird complexity. Just wait till you learn about Guard points
Tfw you discover a hilarious new channel covering some of your favorite games, but they're so new you've watched every video on their channel within a few hours.
You know, it's funny how people play this weapon due to it's complexity and skill it requires, but then there's me who picked it up because I thought it looked cool. Even now that's still the reason I love it so much. And who knows, maybe one day I'll grow up and become a Sword And Shield user.
I originally picked it up in MH4U because I needed something with enough damage to solo but enough defense to actually survive. The Lances felt too clunky on a 3DS. Picked up the Gunlance for MHW and moved to the Lance when I felt I wanted the heavy counter stance more than the pew pew. Complexity is fine but I would rather be the immovable object.
I started playing because big axe and shield. I used to play it 90% in Morph axe, only using the sword and shield form to load my phials. Didn't even know about the Savage Axe or even the SAED attack. Just pressing O tree time and telling myself this was my BIG move. Didn't even know about guardpoint or the mandatory skills. had to relearn the whole fcking weapon... It was a tough recovery
Your primarily charge your blade by holding the right face button but other attacks combo out of it can charge the phials as well, just not nearly as much, so it's best to primarily use the charged slash while luring in other attacks to keep a healthy onslaught to the monster. Just remember to keep an eye on them because if you're bouncing you're aren't loading your phials... **incomprehensible charge blade user uttering** **quickly** **attacks** **all the charge transfer** **extra** **charge** I've done my best guys.

Why does everyone think it's so complicated? Here, allow me to explain: Hold circle then press triangle circle, repeat until your phials are red, then press triangle circle a couple times and interrupt the final hit with r2. This will charge your shield, making it more durable. You can also charge your sword by pressing r2 and circle then holding triangle. Charging your sword doesn't require phials. When your shield is charged and you are back to max phials, swap to axe mode by pressing r2 and triangle. By pressing circle 3 times you will discharge your phials in a massive attack and by pressing triangle you can use your individual phials for smaller but still powerful attacks. It's pretty simple upon just picking up and trying the weapon.
I never guard point intentionally. You don't need to do it to be decent. I can beat tempered teostra in 6 minutes without guard pointing. I just charge my phials and spam SAED and also have my sword charged. Teostra falls pretty often if I manage to hit him in the head with the sword charging attack.
Take your time with it. It worth it when you get it to click. Don’t try to gp every attack just do it when you know you can and should like diablos charge or burrows. Stuff you see coming. With more practice you’ll start getting to other attacks. Also. Use the slide attack more. It ends with a gp and it works great as a combo ending for most initial hunting phases or when you are charging phials.
