  • 🟢 Margarine to Butter Conversion in Recipe: foodhow.com/su...
Setting aside that butter can be fine in moderation for many people, but what's wrong with regular margarine? Isn't margarine a healthy alternative to butter?
How Is Margarine Manufactured and Here Is Why You Should Really Avoid Using Margarine.
Margarine is made of vegetable oils. Although that may sound well and good, unfortunately, our bodies don't recognize industrial vegetable oils as food.
Vegetable oils like canola, corn, soybeans, and safflower oils are highly processed by heating and then further processing. This processing may involve using de-waxing, petroleum-solvents, refining, de-gumming, deodorization, and there are several other unnatural-sounding terms. I'm quite sure that you could never replicate that in your own kitchen.
Less than a hundred years ago, human consumption of processed vegetable oils was practically non-existent. That is because we just didn't have the technology needed to process and extract these oils. But once we figured out how to extract these oils from plants on an industrial scale, the vegetable oil consumption skyrocketed.
And that will lead nicely to my next point.
As most vegetable oils are already highly processed, they need to be treated and processed even further to make margarine.
As you know, vegetable oils are not solid like butter is. To make vegetable oils solid for use in margarine, they will have to go through a process known as hydrogenation. This means that oils are heated on high pressure and then treated with hydrogen gas and a metal catalyst. And all that heavy processing will produce trans fats.
Food companies use this process to increase the product's shelf life, make margarine solid on room temperature, and save costs. However, our bodies tend to find these altered molecules very challenging to process.
Margarine, particularly stick margarine, contains a lot of these trans fats. These fats are often linked to various health problems. Also, according to the Food and Drug Association, these man-made fats are proven to be unsafe.
Also, unlike traditional butter, margarine contains fewer amounts of essential vitamins. While it is true that butter is high in fat and calories, it naturally contains several essential nutrients, including vitamins A and E.
Some margarine companies are incorporating these vitamins into their products through synthetic vitamins. However, these synthetic or other unnatural nutrients can actually cause more harm than good to our bodies. Studies have also shown that these synthetic vitamins are mostly ineffective and give you little or no benefit.
And like the trans fats, and other unnatural additives are not enough, margarine also contains high levels of omega 6. When consumed in large amounts, it may lead to many health complications. If you are worried about eating too many omega-6 fats, avoid eating margarine that contains sunflower, corn, or soybean oil, which are exceptionally high in omega 6.
And unfortunately, that is not all. Since margarine uses vegetable oil as a base ingredient, various researchers have found that most of these vegetable-derived oils contain GMOs, also known as genetically modified organisms.
So, before the processing of margarine can even start, the crops are already tampered with.
And lastly, aside from the synthetic and other unnatural forms of nutrients, some margarine manufacturers also use BHT or Butylated Hydroxytoluene to increase the product's shelf life. Although it is generally recognized as safe, it is still a lab-made product and not natural.
    Ok, but what about butter?
As there could be many bad things said about butter, the manufacturing process of butter is considered to be quite simple.
It includes the pasteurization of cow's milk, skimming, and churning of the cream, until the butter is readily formed. The overall process is very simple, and you can even do these steps yourself at home.
On the other hand, the process of making margarine is so much more complicated. There is no way you could make margarine at home unless you set up a massive manufacturing-plant and purchase a lot of scary-sounding chemicals.
Luckily it's not that hard to stop eating margarine. However, you could run into problems if you are an avid baker, as most baking recipes require margarine in their list of ingredients.
So, if you want to go margarine free, including in your baking, follow the link at the beginning of this description below where you will find practical tips and tricks about substituting margarine in your baking recipes.
    Or go straight to foodhow.com
I will also cover some of the recipes that don't need the use of margarine at all, and what sort of result you can expect using butter instead.
    Check it out now!

I just found out yesterday that the "butter" we've been consuming my whole life is actually margarine. The packaging says "buttermilk" so I just always assumed that it was butter but when I took a closer look at the wrapper it said "premium margarine" in small letters on the corner. It's been a while since I knew that buttermilk is actually different but it shocked me to know that I've been using margarine when baking instead of butter.

Lard, beef dripping and other animal fats are cheap (here at least), can be saved after cooking meat (even though I do not eat meat every day) and suffice for many purposes. Grilling, dry-frying, air frying and choosing a different meal entirely are good alternatives to frying in fat. Many sandwich fillings are moist enough that they are good without butter or marg.. I feel so much healthier having cut back.

I'm not gonna say that margarine is the healthiest thing in the world but lots of what you say is wrong.
    1. Vitamins are ineffective for people who don't get them from what they eat, that's why they're adding it back to the margarine (whereas people would previously get them from butter), there's nothing that distinguishes a synthethic vitamin that another that's non-synthethic.
    2. If the vegetable oil comes from a GMO or doesn't, won't have any effect on the quality of the oil produced. The oil is extracted and cleaned from any potential impurities or things that shouldn't be there (in the improbable eventuality that the specific mutation would create any sort of problem on the plant).

it's not so much a case of correct vs not correct as it is the way the information was conveyed that I took issue with.
primarily, you used the phrasing unnatural when speaking about margarine, and natural when speaking about butter.
while I don't think you were doing it on purpose, this phrasing can very easily manipulate your audience to have a bias towards a particular mindset of viewing margarine as dangerous because it is unnatural and butter as safe because it is natural (less unnatural than margarine really).
you also mentioned GMO's as being unnatural and that GMO crops are the primary sources of oil for margarine.
however, many things we take for granted as safe every day are unnatural: clothes, cupboards, beds, tea, pasteurized milk, electronics, musical instruments, houses, plumbing, etc.
my point is that how close something is to its state as found in nature is irrelevant to whether or not it is safe to eat, wear, use, etc. in the case of margarine it is primarily the trans fats that are the danger, not the margarine's highly processed state or plants of origin.

I completely agree with you. A lot of people do not realize how much processing some cooking oils go through. When you start looking into it, it is pretty shocking what is involved, like bleach and sulfur. It is a reminder that just because something looks clean and golden in a bottle does not mean it is the best choice. Definitely makes you think twice about what oils to use in the kitchen.

Personally I don’t use margarine & always stick with butter, but there’s some flaws in the presentation of your argument. Basically how it came across to me was “natural good, synthetic bad. Margarine has synthetic processing & components. Words I don’t know. Scary & bad.” This is a way too simplistic way of approaching the issue. It’s similar to the whole “chemicals bad” thing. Not only does natural not inherently equal good, (reference cyanide. Arsenic, ricin, or literally thousands of other natural things that will straight up kill you), but also leads to grouping things based on a shortsighted “natural good, synthetic chemical bad” Mentality. Remember that joke petition to ban the extremely harmful chemical dihydrogen monoxide? Hundreds if not thousands of people signed it. Know what it is? Dihydrogen, (meaning 2 hydrogen molecules), Monoxide, (1 oxygen molecule). 2h1o, or simplified, h2o. They were signing a petition to ban water because they were too foolish to understand basic high school level chemistry enough to know that “chemical bad” isn’t a proper way to address these things. ALL things are chemicals. So you shouldn’t shun things because “ it sounds like scary synthetic chemicals that I don’t understand so it must be bad”, you have to look at the science of what those chemicals & processes are & how they metabolize in & affect the human body. Some synthetic things are good. Some natural things are bad.
Just to be clear, I do agree with her conclusions. Margarine is unhealthy. It’s her methodology I think is flawed.

Some people may have difficulty digesting butter due to a lack of the enzyme lactase, which is responsible for breaking down the lactose found in dairy products. Lactose intolerance is a common digestive disorder that affects the ability to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in milk and dairy products. People with lactose intolerance may experience symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain after consuming dairy products that contain lactose. In some cases, these symptoms can be relieved by taking lactase supplements or by consuming dairy products that have been treated to remove the lactose. Other people may have a cow's milk protein allergy, which can cause an immune system reaction when dairy products are consumed. This can lead to digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

bull cookies. modern factories don`t produce margarine with 2% trans fats. Dairy butter contains > 3% trans fat naturally, so without any difficult processing, its a natural (unhealthy) ingredient. The fat in margarine is only mildly processed. The factories mainly use natural emulsifiers and in Europe no preservatives are added. so margarines is quite healthy, they contain healthy fatty acids and in most cases fat soluble vitamins.

The mith about butter not being ok for people, can be easily destroyed.
Anyone can put a piece of butter in his mouth and find out that is melting.
Body temperature is exactly the same temperature as inside the mouth, so butter will melt.
Butter will melt and will going to be processed by gastric juices. No fat will be stuck inside veins or anywhere else inside the body because the body has the temperature to melt the butter, and if the butter is melted, then the fat which butter is made of, will be melted.
Same as the pork lard. Pork lard and pork fat were demonstrated as a major cure in lung issues like tuberculosis.

I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times.
78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways.
81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times.
88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.
    92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come;
and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.
99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations."
102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." .....2 Esdras 7:75

All of these points are very true, and most of them I already knew. However, there is another reason to avoid margarine, and this can also lead to health complications. But this is one that you missed, and probably should have included. Margarine manufacturers use three different chemicals, which are found naturally in butter and trace amounts. These chemicals are. diacetyl, acetoin, and acetylpropionol, all of which are found naturally as a result of the anaerobic fermentation of bacteria. As a result of that, these compounds are what give butter and some cheese as their unique odor. It also contains a small amount of a fatty acid called butyric acid, which is a fourth compound that is responsible for its flavor. That fourth compound is missing in margarine, but the other three that I mentioned are very concerning in high concentrations, which is guaranteed in a stick of margarine. When heated and inhaled, diacetyl in particular is known for causing airway complications. It’s one reason why I avoid the so-called popcorn butter found in theaters. It’s a wonder that the people working those snack bars don’t have breathing problems. And the ironic thing is that this problem usually affects healthy, non-smoking men. Women rarely suffer the condition. But it does happen.

@@FoodHow as a blind person, I can smell the difference between real butter and margarine. The difference to me is very apparent as margarine becomes, melted and heated up. It has a smell resembling butter, but it has an underlying off smell to it. that is difficult to explain with words. But the odor is redolent of melted plastics. The breathing problems associated with the artificial butter flavoring were discovered back in 1987 when workers at a baking company in Missouri became sick due to unprotected exposure to the butter flavor. That information was covered up. In 1993, a German manufacturer of artificial butter flavoring, also made the same discovery when its own employees became sick due to exposure. And finally, in Jasper, Missouri, the same link was re-discovered when dozens of microwave, popcorn manufacture, workers became sick due to exposure to the butter flavoring. In real butter, these chemicals are found in very low concentrations, not enough to be of any significant health risk to breathing, at least, according to my local MD. But when the chemicals are produced on an industrial scale, and added to food products as an artificial flavoring, they’re used in much higher concentrations. In fact, in the Missouri case, the artificial butter flavoring that was normally supplied to the company had a diacetyl content of just 3%. That made it relatively harmless. But unbeknownst to the workers who makes the stuff, they had ended up with a vat of it that contained 10% diacetyl. If you look up the Eric peoples his story, he states it out quite clearly. And all the while, you hear his breath’s through an oxygen tank. The man who made the speech contracted, bronchiolitis obliterans, after being repeatedly exposed to the flavoring, chemicals at the popcorn plant. I always found reading about this very intriguing, because who would think that something that smells good could hurt you? And in nature, where it occurs, naturally, it typically won’t. But when we concentrate it, that’s when it becomes dangerous. It really was disconcerting to hear Eric Peeples make his speech, while hooked to oxygen, And occasionally coughing and clearing his throat. I last heard he was on a transplant list. But unfortunately, lung transplantation is another condition in which bronchiolitis obliterans can occur. So there’s always a chance of it resurfacing even after a successful transplant. So three things happen when you get exposed to diacetyl in high concentrations. You either die, end up on the transplant list, or simply end up, living your life, or rather, the remainder of it, with a lessened ability to breathe. I once heard about a 47 year old woman who was otherwise in great shape, but after reading, just two small bags of microwave, popcorn, a day, couldn’t even walk without getting out of breath. I also heard about another woman who had to sleep propped up all the time. And regarding the guy who won $7 million after suing a manufacturer of butter, flavored microwave, popcorn, he has to live with a 50% lung capacity. No telling if the guy is still alive.

@@FoodHow The video that I mentioned is found under the channel insider exclusive. There are actually two stories of people who worked at these popcorn plants who contracted the condition after being exposed to the flavoring chemicals. One man’s name is Jerry, Blalock, and the others name is Eric peoples. But walk into a movie theater, and the artificial butter smell is readily apparent. Walk into a place like auntie Anne’s pretzels, however, and there is a butter smell, and while it’s similar to the popcorn, butter, you smell in theaters, it’s actually the real thing. Anne Beiler, the Amish woman who founded the company, would never countenance using margarine in her pretzels.

I go to my local "Popeyes" they never fail to ask if I want butter with my biscuit. I always reply "Yes". And then they hand me margarine.. I like coffee. I like cream with my coffee. Some restaurants will ask if I want cream. I always reply "Yes".. Then they hand me a packet of dry "non dairy creamer.". I ask at some restaurants for a small soda. They tell me they don't have small, only medium and large. I say to them "wouldn't that make the medium a small" ?...SOMEBODY HAND ME MY PILLS!!!...I love it when you are to receive change...The employee never fails to Bob their head up and down looking to see how much change you are to receive.. Then they hand you your bills, change, and receipt all in one inconvenient pile.. Not many count your change back to you anymore. So I must take the time to count it before I leave the cash register, while juggling the pile I was just handed. And make sure I have all my items while the carousel goes around...Twice in one week I was shorted $10. at. "wally world." Look, I'm not saying margarine is good for you, and the evidence does suggest it's probably a lot more harmful than butter in many (but not all) criteria.
But jeez ... the amount of pseudo-science, science-denial, and general science-phobia in this video is staggering.
Just because you can't make something in your kitchen, it doesn't mean it's bad for you. Just because something has gone through a production process, doesn't mean it's bad for you. Just because something has ingredients or processes you don't understand or can't pronounce the name of, does not mean it's bad for you. Just because a crop is genetically modified, does not mean it's bad for you.
I'm pretty sure the reason we didn't make a lot of vegetable oil based products before the 20th century is not because we "didn't have the technology". I think the reason we DID in the 20th century was because people recognised that butter is very high in saturated fats, and calories in general, and they tried to find a healthier alternative. The alternative they came up with was better in some ways, and worse in many ways, why is why many people are avoiding it nowadays.
The main criticism of margarine (and it IS a valid criticism, and probably reason enough for most people to avoid it where possible) is the high concentration of trans-fats as a result of the hydrogenation process. You did mention it in the video. You spent like 4 seconds talking about it, while the remaining five and half minutes you were displaying how paralysed with fear you are about all the scary-sounding things about margarine that keep you up at night.

SO where did we get Olive Oil? It's been around a long long time! And it is good for you! (Note: Olive Oil has been manufactured for over 2,000 - 3,000 years!)
Also, have you ever melted real butter down? It is made with an oil base, sometimes known as "Gee." So calling margarine not the same as butter is absurd!

    • @FoodHow
      @FoodHow  8 месяцев назад

The olive oil you're likely referring to is indeed cold-pressed organic olive oil. Produced through a method that involves mechanically pressing olives without the application of heat and chemicals.
Also, ghee is pure butterfat without any milk solids, nothing to do with margarine and oil. I make it all the time as it is good for frying. If your butter was mixed with oil, then it is probably some type of butter spread, and I suggest not using it and throwing it away.

"But it costs $10 Cents less per pound, so that beats everything else." - Average person's thinking. What I have observed about average people is that they base their entire lives around two considerations only:
    1. Cost - must be as cheap as possible.
    2. Convenience - must be handy and easy to use.
That it's. The vast, vast, vast majority of people would rather pay less if they can . Severe health consequences 10 or 20 years down the line don't matter to 99.8% of all people. Secondly, the vast majority of people have no self-control or self-restrain. If they are in the street and they have the choice of eating hydrogenated fat-loaded cookies or starving for the next 5 hours to get home and cook a healthy meal, 99.8% will eat the cookies. The prospect of not eatinf for another 5 hours(the horror You'll die!) and then having to actually work to make a healthy meal is too much for most people. The average person is *dumb and indolent* and want low cost and convenience above any other consideration.
Capitalism gives people what they want, not what they need. The food industry ust responds to the wants of most people.

This video is full of incorrect information. Just for starters, margarine was invented in 1869. Please tell us again how plant oils were not used less than 100 years ago? Can't make margarine at home? Where do you think it was made back then? A modern industrial kitchen and then sent back through time?
Please, this is obvious misinformation. Tons of actual controlled studies have shown that plant oils and plant oil based products are better for us than butter. Personally, I prefer butter in some cases but margarine is absolutely fine since the removal of trans fatty acids.

    • @FoodHow
      @FoodHow  Год назад

Thanks for watching my video and sharing your thoughts! I appreciate the opportunity to chat and clarify a few points.
My main point in the video was to emphasize the potential health risks associated with margarine and industrially processed vegetable oils. Many studies show that these oils can be heavily processed and contain harmful substances, even when trans fats have been removed. The additives and processing methods used in producing margarine are concerning, and many studies indicate that we should be cautious about consuming them.
As for making margarine at home, it's true that you could create a version using cold presses, organic oils. However, the commercial process, with hydrogenation and chemical treatments, isn't something you can easily recreate in your kitchen. That's what I was trying to convey, and it's one reason why I'm against the consumption of commercially produced margarine.
I even posted some homemade margarine recipes here: foodhow.com/how-to-make-margarine-at-home/ but they are miles away from the margarine you can buy in supermarkets, perhaps, in some small health food shops you can find some.
But even with hamade margarines, butter is still better option, a more natural product with a simpler production process. It contains essential nutrients, like vitamins A and E, and can be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation. Butter is a far superior choice compared to margarine, as it's less processed and more natural.
Many studies suggest that industrially made oils and margarine should be avoided for human consumption whenever possible due to the potential health risks associated with their production. It's important for us to be mindful of the ingredients and processes used in the foods we consume and choose healthier, more natural alternatives like butter.

The wording used in this is VERY biased. I wouldn't have a problem with this video if it wasn't for the fact it's scripted like propaganda. You only state the negatives of margarine and only the positives of butter, furthermore GMOs have no negative affects on you, it's all speculation with no evidence, margarine *used* to be made with far more trans fats but after the discovery of its dangers it's been removed in most margarines. In my country, our food laws don't even allow trans fats in margarine. Butter usually contains 60-80% more saturated fat than margarine, hydrogenation adds hydrogen to the unsaturated fats to make it more saturated to make it solid at room temperature the byproduct is transfats which can be removed afterwards, margarine has virtually an infinite shelf life while cool so the hydrogenation is only to make it solid. You CAN find margarine in your country without transfat if you just look at the label. Furthermore it's cheaper! Why pay more for butter when margarine is cheaper? While I use butter for cooking I almost exclusively use margarine for spreading as to limit my saturated fat content. Please don't spread false information and do some research, or at the very least provide evidence for your claims as they're false. Also, virtually all synthetic vitamins are completely fine for us as theyre chemically identical the only exception is vitamin E which literally isn't added into most margarines anyway. If you have read this after watching the video, I hope I've opened your eyes to the truth, or at least some unbiased information. Just because something is simple doesn't mean it's safe nor does it mean a complicated method is dangerous. "Scary sounding chemicals" "these sound bad" you're not stating how those chemicals are bad because they're not. Dihydrogen monoxide sounds scary but it's literally water. Also, margarine (at least where I live) is commonly made with olive oil, which is also what you used as a cooking oil substitute because it's really healthy :)
Also, we as a species mutated to be able to process milk and our body does not "recognise" milk as a proper source of calcium and the required energy your body has to use to process the calcium in milk, people who are lactose intolerant are actually people who haven't mutated the ability to process milk aswell, milk isnt natural for us and isn't healthy nor unhealthy. While I still consume milk I'm no advocate for its "health" because it's false.
