I like you point with these reels. Really valid argument. I’ve been planning out building a 4 wt and these reels are good cheap alternative. My starter reel was one of these reels and I never had an issue with it
Over the past week, I've used the Sword II 5/6 reel and caught 200+ trout. I agree with your assessment that the drag tends to loosen up after a couple of hours of fishing. That's somewhat annoying, but can be dealt with by occasionally checking for the condition. However, when properly adjusted, the drag is smooth and helped me land five trout in the 3 lb. range on my 10 ft. 3-weight euronymphing rod. All-in-all it's a pretty good reel. It's not as good as the $300 American-made reel on my other rod, but for the $48 that it cost me at Alibaba, it's a quality reel at a bargain price that does the trick for me.
Yeah I hear ya. Small price to pay for such a decent setup for well under $100 I think. Btw, they are coming out with a new rod soon. I’m not a big fan of their current sword rod honestly, but I do like their new one. It’s not for sale yet, but look for it. You will like it!
Oh sweet will have to keep eyes open for that.. Its my second rod an upgrade from a cheapo Wal-Mart set up I started with so it was a big upgrade lol. Tight lines boss man
I'm looking at getting a 6wt in the future and you've sold me on the Piscifun reels. I've seen them on Amazon but there seems to be an infinite amount of cheap fly reels on there. Glad to know that these are high quality and a good value, plus, as others have said, I would rather put more money in a rod and fly line. People see made in china on things and immediately write it off without even trying it. The company and their quality control is more important than where it comes from. No one minds paying Apple $1,000+ for an iphone made in China, or a couple thousand dollars for a huge fancy TV that was probably made in Taiwan or something. There are absolutely products made in China that are complete junk, but that doesn't mean that just because it's made in America that the company can't also make junk products. It all comes down to materials, the company, and their quality control. And I don't mean to malign American made products and American companies, I just find the irony of it all funny. Thanks again for the review!
Glad to help! And if your going a 6wt I highly recommend upgrading to the crest if you can. The drag is much better for those larger fish. But that depends on the fish your going after. Yes there are a lot of cheap reels available. I haven’t used any of the other ones except the piscifun. But I can say the piscifun has been good for me. However a few subscribers said that theirs had some gear issues. But only 2-3, and I know a lot of my subs got them.
My 6wt would most likely be my designated smallmouth rod but occasionally swinging big streamers for browns if I get the chance (which isn't very often). I've had some decent sized small mouth and large rainbows give me a good fight but I never had them peeling line off my drag so the sword 2 might be good for the waters I fish, but I'll look into the Crest as well. Thanks again!
I purchased one of these sword 2 reels after watching some of your other reviews on Piscifun products. I can say that I am completely happy with the purchase and agree that this reel is very smooth.
8:30 I did lose a couple of really nice bass because of this issue. I would like to correct my previous comment. I would give this reel 3.5 starts out of 5 because of that very issue.
Lol true! Most of the time that’s how I fight trout, but sometimes you get one of those big powerful fish, and you have to take it to the reel, and it does well also at that point.
Go to www.Risenfly.com. I’ve been using their stuff more. Slightly more expensive but I can give you my discount there if you want. Great reels/rods and other gear. And the best customer service and warranty in the business. Seriously, great reels starting at $100, and less expensive with the discount code. I left working with piscifun because their customer service wasn’t too great, and too many people got lemons, they weren’t doing good quality control. Then not standing by the lemon reel. But risen does great!
I also have the same issue with the drag loosening on my sword2. Luckily I'm in Machining school and plan on fixing that issue. I have a maxcatch avid that also has the same issue.
I bought a sword II on Amazon, and it came with free line as a promotion as well. It looks fantastic, really nice fit & finish, & it's held up great. Very good value.
Ya they aren’t bad for the price. Of late I’ve been really loving risen fly reels. Their least expensive is $100, but with the extra cost you get lifetime warranty, and a drag that stays put. Check them out, and use my discount code for some money off. Code is “McFly”
@@McFlyAngler nice I will check em out. I lost my rod and was just given two rods that both have these reels I didn’t realize how inexpensive they were until I looked them up to see if I could get extra spools.
For sure these are great prices and not bad whatsoever. I will say, last few years now though their quality control has gone down. If you get a good one, then great, however a few I got and my subs got recently we’re not great. That’s why I stopped using them. Found risen and their customer service and quality control is excellent
You can purchase Piscifun cheaper on their website than what Amazon sells it for. I purchased the Platte in a 10 Wt for large striped bass 30"+ and saltwater. It is a beast
@@McFlyAngler They offer a 15%discount if you use the code SUBS15. Free shipping, of course it's not prime shipping so it took 3 days to receive the Platte. I am in the market for a new reel/rod in 4/5wt for a trout fishing trip. I don't own a trout setup so that is why I need one. I went to their website and they seem to be sold out of quite a bit. Which is a good thing imo as it seems the public is jumping on board with them. Would you have a recommendation for a tight budget trout setup? Looking for no more than $100 for reel and $60.00 for rod?
Thanks for the excellent review. I suspect there's a huge cost difference in CNC machining in US vs China and hence a significant price difference American vs China-made reels. My concern is the quality of the aluminum used as well as any subsequent heat treating and anodizing. I did buy a "fully-machined" China-made reel and with one accidental drop the frame bent out of round. That said I do like Piscifun products and I'm going to risk $70 for a Sword II based on your review. We'll see. Thanks Angler!
Yeah the sword 1 was cheaper aluminum I think. The 2 seems more solid. I know what you mean though. As for the cost difference, yeah! Workers in America need 12.50/hour to survive, in China they are happy with 20 cents. So that’s where the cost difference is. And just like American companies, the specific company makes a difference. Quality varies vastly and I’ll be honest that I’ve had some terrible Chinese made products as well. But these are good.
Lol, just cause it shows that doesn’t mean you should. So, I like this reel, not knocking it or anything. But when you submerge it in water, the drag loosens up. So if your fighting a fish, and dunk it, the drag will loosen and you will have to fight it without drag. Or try and tighten the drag mid fight. Once it dries out it seems to go back to original strength. But the reel is not fully sealed and dunking it many times can result in ruining the drag for good. Just FYI
Well it’s not amazon including it, it’s piscifun... they are probably the sellers and took that picture. They are decent reels but for $50 you gotta know some things just aren’t perfect. They might take pretty pictures and post them, maybe even trying to get you to buy their stuff because you see that and think it’s submergable, but they should say on the listing there that it’s not a sealed drag. In that instance, you should never dunk it.
Awesome man! Yeah they aren’t bad reels at all. Mine backs off when fishing through the day. But I had no problem with that. I would just check it once and a while. I did loose one fish due to it because I wasn’t paying attention. But for the money it’s hard to beat this reel isn’t it?
@@McFlyAngler Yeah, it's nice for the money. But I spoke too soon, after my last trip my drag is now stuck......I can increase the drag but it wont turn back down less than about half way?? Guess I'll be talking it apart soon lol
@@McFlyAngler Thanks! As you prob. can tell I'm a really new fly fisherman. Im only after trout tho, up to 2-3kg max(and sorry for my bad English) :)
No worries man. Those brands make good reels. But yes they aren’t machined. Machined reels tend to be lighter, nicer, smoother and stronger. But in reality, majority of fly fishing for trout will not need these extra features. For name brand reels you will probably not find anything fully machined for less than $200. I could be wrong, but usually that’s about the price mark I find the change from cast to machined. Another company you might want to check out is risen fly rods. I’ve started working with them and they are offering everyone that is my subscriber 15% off. They have some really nice reels. In fact for $155 (after the discount) you could get their fully machined gideon reel. Which is one of the nicest reels I’ve ever used. It’s really really nice! Oh yeah, old stuff is fine and dandy for sure. But as always, new technology brings something different to the table. However like cars, they might not last as long as the antiques did. But while they are working they will do the job better.
Regarding the problem with the drag knob occasionally loosening, I think I may have found something worth exploring. On the exploded parts diagram that came in the box with my Sword II reel, it shows an O-ring underneath the drag knob. I removed the drag knob on my reel to find that mine is missing the O-ring, which may be the cause of the slippage. Unfortunately, my diagram does not specify the ring's size, so I have contacted AliExpress' Piscifun store to see if they can provide me with the info so I can buy it locally. To send the reel all the way back to China and await its replacement would undoubtedly take 3-5 months. For what it's worth, while researching the issue, I found an older exploded parts diagram via Google images that showed the Sword II reel without an O-ring. Perhaps Piscifun's engineering team knew about the problem and added an O-ring to eliminate slippage. I'll have to wait and see once I add an O-ring to the reel.
@@leshamilton6657 After contacting the manufacturer, they were unable to provide a satisfactory solution. I ended up selling the reel and bought an American-made model.

Well I only know about them because I use their products a lot. Haha. I’ve talked with them about issues and stuff, with warranty. I did inquire about the spare spools, and they said they don’t have them yet. So I sent a lengthy email about how important it is to sell spare spools for reels. They said they made them for the sword 1, but haven’t yet for the 2. So I told them that they should get them, and it will help there sales tremendously. They agreed and said they were looking making them as quickly as they can. So keep a lookout. They might have some
YES!!! I expressed the same sentiment regarding spare spools. Was thinking I may just buy a second reel if I like the Sword 2 and use the spool as a spare. The price may be right? Thanks for your thoughts.
So I bought a Chinese fly reel from eBay and when you tighten the drag it makes it hard to reel in line , instead of making for the fish to pull out line. Wtf is that about?
Some aren’t made properly…. Not all Chinese brands are created equal. However this brand hasn’t had great quality control lately. Check out Risen fly. They make great reels at good prices
Did you by chance check to see how the reel was set up. If you have a left hand retrieve reel and use it as a right hand reel or vise versa the drag would work in reverse making it hard to reel line in and reel would have no drag. Just a possibility.
McFly Angler I use their wt forward 7wt. floating line. It's an excellent line, very slick finish, shoots well and tip does not sink over time. Easy to clean and no pitting or deterioration. I've used it regularly for two years and vey satisfied with the line.
After a couple of years of buying nothing but Maxcatch reels, I figured I'd try a Sword II for a 3wt build I was doing ( based on all the good reviews) . I really wanted to love the reel but it came through set with the drag set to well over a pound on the low end. It wasn't even comfortable stripping line off of i. I am sending it back and getting another MC Avid which ( in my personal comparisons) has just about the same specs but a better drag.. Too bad. good looking reel and seems to be otherwise decently made.
This video is old. They came really good to me, I loved it. But since this video, they lowered their customer service and quality in my opinion. Go check out risen fly. Www.risenfly.com. Yeah they are good for Chinese made. The thing about Chinese made products is they usually send their junk to us because Americans don’t want to spend much money on something perceived as junk. But China does have the ability to make good quality stuff. American made usually is gonna be better though, but you pay much more for it. Even so, this company since I’ve made this video had kinda lowered their quality in my understanding. Last few years their quality control has been pretty bad. I did find a new company that actually is an American brand that makes great quality rods and reels called Risen Fly. Check them out, great prices and they have great quality and quality control as well. Www.risenfly.com
Piscifuns rods are great too. Now I don’t own any of their fly rods I do own one of their casting rods for bass and I have nothing to say but good things. Super sensitive, comfortable to use, and seems very well built especially for the price. I would think the quality would transfer to their fly rods
I did, it wasn’t overly sharp on mine. Never seen any of theirs too sharp. It is sharp for sure, just not razor. And it’s never damaged my line. Luckily since it doesn’t damage my line, while fishing it’s not where I am touching it. All the rest of the edges are nice and rounded. But I get the concern. I had it as well when I first got the reel, but after fishing it, I never noticed any problems with it.
I have the Sword as well as the Platte fly .. both 9/10 wt. never had any problems with these reels … for the price,… you can’t go wrong…! Yeah, those high end reels are very nice but at the end of the day… the function of the reel is to hold your line … basically,.. you’re hand lining your fish most of the time … mine are setup for saltwater fishing for Stripers mostly and casting big nasty flies…. Anyways,… if you’re using any reel in saltwater,.. you should rinse in warm water and dry it after each use and you should be fine…. Be good to your gear and your gear will be good to you…! 👍😎🤙

Did you by chance check to see how the reel was set up. If you have a left hand retrieve reel and use it as a right hand reel or vise versa the drag would work in reverse making it hard to reel line in and reel would have no drag. Just a possibility.
Have you used any of their fly line?
No, have you?
McFly Angler I use their wt forward 7wt. floating line. It's an excellent line, very slick finish, shoots well and tip does not sink over time. Easy to clean and no pitting or deterioration. I've used it regularly for two years and vey satisfied with the line.
Good to know, I’ll have to try it out.
Just a correction - They might be manufactured in China, but the company is American. It's two guys who got together to make fishing gear together.
Who is?
@@McFlyAngler Piscifun.
It is a Chinese company. I work with them, but they are entirely based in China. Great gear for a low price.
What is the weigth of 5/6? Gr pls
I don’t know, I don’t own this anymore. Check out www.risenfly.com. I work with them now and really like their stuff.
American based company, great customer service, quality products. Plus they gave all my subs a discount. Type in McFly at checkout for the discount
People in Alaska use these reels all the time fishing for red salmon or silver salmon and trout
Yeah? Good to know
Does this come in extra spool
No... and I do t think they even offer an extra for purchase...
Great info, nice tip on loosening the drag knob, l really like cabal’s RLS 3/4 weight for 99.00 but now not sure which one to go with.
Thank you, so I’ve found a better company, go Check out www.risenfly.com. I can get you a discount there. They have a great reel at $99 however use my discount for even better deal. Discount code is “McFly”.
@@McFlyAngler Ok thx I’ll check it out.
You should do this with any reel with a drag… not just fly reels….
🤙😎👍
e yup... most high end machined in china.. thanks for info...
Dead on....spend your money on the rod....for many applications the reel is a line holder, nothing more. I have 3 Picifun reels and have been pleased.
Thanks man, yeah they are really good reels I think. Well really good for the money.
Piscifuns rods are great too. Now I don’t own any of their fly rods I do own one of their casting rods for bass and I have nothing to say but good things. Super sensitive, comfortable to use, and seems very well built especially for the price. I would think the quality would transfer to their fly rods
the only bad thing i found are the razorblade sharp edges on the inside of the spool where you put your backing :-(
I haven’t ever had issues with it hurting my fly line. If you find that it does to yours please tell me.
just go over the inside of the spool with your finger ..
Same for Some fly rods, blanks are China made lol
There are some yes
I unsubscribed from your channel and I'm sure you know why
Nope, I don’t actually, but have a good day! :)
Everyone knows and unless you send us all some Necco wafers, we WILL spill the beans,
cheesy person!! How you like them apples?
👍😎🤙
