2:50 - though it's unwise to overtake when passing a turning, it's not illegal (as indicated by broken central line). The fault here is with the driver who turned out quite obviously without looking to both left and right.
The overtake in and of itself may not be illegal in terms of being explicitly stated as just not he done, but there are legal requirements in rule 144 which can apply in many situations, and the advisory rules of the Highway Code, such as advisory rule 167 regarding overtaking, usually give situations where these legal requirements (of rule 144) could/would apply. So although rule 167 says do not overtake where it could bring you in conflict with other road users, to do do is dangerous and rule 144 clearly states you MUST NOT drive dangerously, making doing such an overtake illegal.
@@cigmorfil4101 A better reading of the Highway Code reveals that a lot of it is advice only and only those parts specified are backed up by actual law. You jumped to the conclusion that there was dangerous driving involved in the overtake. It would be wiser to attribute 'contibutary negligence' to the overtake - it might be enough to sway a court into finding it dangerous driving (though it might not), but the emerge was a bang to rights dangerous move, so takes the majority of the blame. Turning left onto a main road does not give you right of way, nor does blasting your horn. It is your responsibility to ensure that it is clear both ways before emerging!
Julian's extremely reactive advanced driving skills involve dabbing the brake when something drives across him. Admittedly a rare skill for a dashcammer
Would also help if the speed limit definition was actually correct. 70mph on Dual Carriageways/60mph on Single Carriage for Dual Purpose vehicles with an M1 classification. If they are rated N1 then they are 10mph less for both.
5:23, to be fair she was already part way out. One of those 'discretion the better part of valour' moments that might well have saved him the insurance agro
WOW Julian!! If I had only known sooner, that slightly tapping the brake pedal was grounds for being known as a super human with advanced driving skills, I could have gotten a much better rate on my car insurance!!
Advanced driving skills comes from anticipation of a situation and not thinking you have the skills of a fighter pilot.............................which you don't.
My absolute favourite situation was a huge traffic jam at a set of temporary traffic lights. We’re all just sitting patiently with the light on red. Genius Audi driver at the back thinks he’s going to skip this queue. I’m still not sure to this day what part of “we’re all waiting patiently” triggered something in his brain that said “I don’t need to wait here”. He cruised right past us “idiots” and made his way through the roadworks. It was a long section of roadworks so it was about 2 minutes later he reappeared reversing. That’s because there was a low loader with a pile driver on the back. It’s a big load and for Mr Impatient it’s a massive problem. That’s exactly why the light has been on red so long. He’s reversing back because, let’s face it, he’s an idiot but at least he worked out that 15 tons of machinery have right of way. Everyone else in the queue at the lights is not letting this little Pratt in. I would bet he had to reverse over a mile and even then he probably got a mouthful from the police escort for the oversized load.
"Only my extremely reactive advanced driving skills avoided a bad accident here" - Mate, if you were as advanced as you think you are, you would have been in the correct lane to begin with, sure you can use the 2nd lane to go left, but did you actually need to? Was it that busy that both lanes were needed to continue allowing a natural flow? The lack of planning when you know this happens at this roundabout really doesn't scream 'advanced driver' to anyone.
I agree. I am always surprised by the confidence of drivers in the inner circle of a roundabout cut across when they reach their turn off, automatically assuming the outer lane car is going to do so too.
I'm a truck driver myself - I take both lanes round a roundabout when there's only 2 lanes for this very reason. The only time I stick to my own lane is if it's a huge multi-lane one. Seen way too many videos of people doing this to trucks turning right and coming off worse, I don't fancy being the next video! xD
3:07 perhaps if instead of loaning about the airport you concentrated on your driving, you would have noticed that the road into which you wanted to turn was not clear - there was a car being driven dangerously.
Far too busy chatting that’s why. Make a note of all the people that have been involved in an accident that you can actually see and they’re all women drivers. Enough said.
I was a witness to a similar accident many years ago. The overtaking driver was found to be at fault. The basis of this was that if you are on the wrong side of the road for any reason whatsoever, it is your responsibility to be certain that it is safe to do so.
Annoying when overtakes happen near junctions but the emerging driver is obliged to give way in both directions. Having a hundred yards of parked cars requires vehicles to carefully and slowly pass them regardless that, like in my area, they might also need to pass a couple of tee junctions.
6:22 I don't think "forced emergency braking" is quite the right phrase. Sure, the van probably shouldn't have pulled out in the first place but you didn't exactly have to drop anchor to avoid and the prolonged blast on the horn was unnecessary.
You can tell the cammer's a dickhead by the way he reacts afterwards - overtaking forcing a car coming the other way to brake and aggressively accelerating in a school area. This is why it usually takes two idiots to turn a minor misjudgement into an accident.
An advanced driver should always anticipate what a bad or forgetful driver might do. The red van was always in your line of sight and as you was taking the first exit off the island your best place was the nearside lane then the problem would not have occurred. At least that's what I was taught on an advance driving course.
'Approach a roundabout in any convenient lane' but logic dictates that if you're turning left you want to be in lane number one. That red van followed the lane markings as far as I could tell and you drive in that lane to allow people to pass you.
And that was the car written off? What a pile of expensive rubbish they make today. You can fart and sneeze on the things and write them off. What a money racket.
Was wondering if someone would comment on this. Bang on, very poor driving on behalf of the "written off" driver, not excusing the driver of other vehicle, but absolutely no reaction to the potential hazard ahead, as said could be seen a mile off.
5:23 is an example of why I don't tend to run dipped beams during the day. They still dazzle oncoming drivers on hills, and can be mistaken for flashed headlights on poor surfaces.
Forgot to mention, as for the guy overtaking near the airport, what happened to looking left as well as right before emerging at a give way? Go and watch some Ashley Neal and learn a little :)
Notice the angle that the police vehicle is stopped at. I was trained during my advanced driving course to park at this angle when stopped during an emergency on a hard shoulder of a motorway or any dual carriageway with a hard shoulder. The reason for it is mainly that with approaching vehicles, when the driver sees a car or van stopped at such an odd angle, a message is sent that something is ... *out of the ordinary ... and It has the effect of drawing attention to that stationary vehicle telling the drivers of approaching vehicles that the car is stationary and not in a running lane, this being particularly the case at night on lit and unlit dual carriageways with a hard shoulder. It also allows approaching vehicles to see the flashing amber hazard lights on both the rear of the stationary car or van as well as those located on the nearside of it.* It also gives more room to open the nearside door and it is quite possible, though I was never taught this, that it is possible to exit the vehicle via the driver's door, not advisable if parked parallel to lane 1. This depends on the width of the shoulder and the angle chosen .. this final part is not advice, just an observation by myself.
Even when entering into a one way road. I've seen a good few going the wrong way and a couple of accidents occurring because people turning onto the road only looked back instead of also checking the front was clear.
@@hippophile Fair point, actually saw a teenager racing down the wrong way on one of those electric scooters today. Not even on the side of the road, right down the middle.
The overtake is against the advisory rules. The emerge was against the mandatory rules. This isn't as cut and dried as some think (although the principle that mandatory trumps advisory as a higher law is sometimes applied) - although the emerge was dangerous so was the ill advised overtake. In such cases in can be decided that there was contributary negligence and blame apportioned 70/30 or 80/20, though it was obvious that the emerge was performed without checking that joining the major road was safe (so the assumption in the video was definitely incorrect).
Good post re tailgaters !! A mate of mine got sick of them so he wired up a switch to turn brake lights on and off manually. If he wanted to shake off a tailgater, He flashed his brake lights manually, while accelerating away. 😂😂😂
Your friend didn't even need to go that far. Just turn his lights on. Two red lights at the back come on as part of the set. A friend's daughter was having the same problem with an habitual tailgater on her morning commute to work. I advised her not to slow down or speed up (which is what Idiot Boy was trying to make her do), just turn your lights on. Apparently the IB simply disappeared in a cloud of dust and gravel and never bothered her again.
Entirely the cammers fault - traffic joining the major road has to be sure it's clear to pull out. Traffic already on the major road has right of way and the centre line markings indicate no restriction on overtaking.
@@TheDeejaydex Sooo many people just don't get this and (like the cammer) think they are in the right. Bit like people thinking they have the right of way when merging onto a motorway/dual carriageway ;-)
So fail driving because didn’t pass the examer, and wasn’t concentrate enough properly for very long time so need some more lessons on the road with special instructors
The last clip with the red VW van reminds me of an old guy I worked with who used to say he always went all the way round every roundabout in the left hand lane! Didn't have an accident but he probably caused some!
@@garryiglesias4074 It isn't forbidden in the UK. It's only advised against. I suspect you wouldn't see an issue with overtaking a cyclist near a junction for example. The issue with the RR there is overtaking a car intending to turn right. Regardless, had the cammer hit the RR, best case scenario for them would be 50/50 because they failed their legal obligation to give way to traffic on the main road. Overtaking at a junction isn't, in itself, illegal. But the circumstances of the overtake in that specific clip (Mustang intending to turn right, no one would expect a car to overtake a vehicle intending to turn right) may well have been enough to rule 50/50 fault.
"Defensive driving" ... the nice way of saying .... drive in a way that lets you anticipate and avoid all the nutty, incompetent and drunken things other drivers do around you.
When I was learning to drive, my Grandfather told me "Drive as if every other person on the road is a complete idiot who will never do what you expect him to do"
White van at 6.22 maybe pulled out late but you (cammer) had loads of time to just ease off and no drama, but no, you have to brake hard at the last moment and blow your horn for no reason, then after he brake checks you you think its a good idea to almost cause a head on collision just because you are annoyed by his reaction. Then you have the gall to call him out for bad driving, don't send this to the police you will get done for dangerous driving, stop being such an arse and drive defensively you might (but only might) live a bit longer
I was amazed at the attitude when the vehicle enters the main road when it has a STOP or GIVE PRIORITY , it did not stop and when it enters the road there is another vehicle overtaking, with reason, I do not understand when they do not respect a STOP, do they still protest?
3:13 The police cannot choose where someone breaks down and the camper was clearly in a hazard to other road users. They parked their high visibility vehicle a safe distance behind the camper to alert traffic and give it some protection. As well as having a high vis vehicle, their blue lights flashing the police laid a line of cones to close of the lane. Note that they also parked their car at an angle so if it was hit, it wouldn't be shunted forward into the camper. YOU saw the police well in advance so why on earth are you suggesting the police contributed to the accident. What more do you think they should have done to be more visible? In my mind they did an excellent job. It is the drivers responsibility to ensure he/she maintains an appropriate distance from the vehicle in front to ensure he can pull up safely in an emergency. No excuse.
When i was younger we used to say amber gambler when people went through a set of lights that had turned to amber. Now it seems no one does that. They just do red dead and drive straight through a light that has already gone red.
Going back around 30 plus years ago we had in the UK non motorway traffic police with the big rovers that were very visible and a good deterrent to bad driving but they have all gone now in favour of cameras to save money . On a daily basis you hear crash hear ,crash there on such a road or motorway and its seems to be getting worse
Thanks for the video, brilliant! It reinforces my belief that some drivers need a retest every 6 months, because they have forgotten or ignored what the rules are, in some cases, couldn't give a damn as they play 'beat the clock! I see it every day on my bike out in the sticks, treating cyclists as 2nd class citizens and overtaking on blind bends. Totally insane
Always look both ways when joining a main road, because traffic on the main road have right of way regardless if the direction they are traveling in, see that's why the give way lines are on the minor road. If you fail to give way to overtaking traffic coming from your left on said main road and have a head on, well trust me you are in the shit!
They forget everything their instructor taught them about 2 seconds after the examiner says congratulations you've passed, seriously a lot of people think it is their entitlement to hold a driving licence when it is a priviledge to have one and you should never forget that
Come on the white Bramley van pulling out was not so terrible! The traffic was going very slowly and the camer was just being impatient and aggressive.
It amazes me that someone would laugh after witnessing a car accident, could be a baby or an elderly person onboard. Where’s your empathy and compassion?
In fairness I laugh at the smaller crashes... I've seen enough of them that I'm pretty much immune to them, the larger ones aren't a laughing matter, unless it's deserved (like someone driving like a dick and losing control) then I laugh loudly out the window at them, normally whilst pointing...
@@chrisb1500 would you laugh if you heard a baby crying from the car? Remember there’s more than likely innocent people in the car that had no control.
Incident at 2:45 was 50/50. Although the junction was a Give Way and didn't require a stop the driver emerging from that junction should still have made certain it was safe to do so. Carelessness from both drivers.
2:45 FYI - the land rover had every right to take over. When you have a yield, you have to give way to all vehicles on the main road and nobody said that they cannot overtake.
The guy that approached the junction and failed to look both ways ignored the give way markings on the road, it was clear he only looked one way as he nearly entered a road with a overtaking vehicle, can you overtake at a junction, the answer is yes if you are in the main carriage way and the markings and conditions allow, I think people forget when ever you are entering a main carriage way it is YOU that have to give way and only enter when safe to do so
It always bugs me that the gender of bad drivers is never pointed out unless it’s a woman. I’ve yet to see a title like “Ignorant male driver” or “reckless male driver”.
I think that the car (Range Rover ?) overtaking actually did nothing illegal as you are in the UK allowed to overtake . If I remember right when taking my drivers licence test in the UK , You always looked right left right on entering a main street form a side street , The reason was there could have been a obstruction ie parked truck or car and they may have to drive on the opposite side , I think people pull out thinking its there right because its there side . I may be wrong but that`s what I think I was taught .
The problem with the RR was that they were overtaking the Mustang which was signaling to turn right. That's why it's not so clear cut. If it was just an overtake with the Mustang showing intention to follow the road ahead, it's very clear the cammer would be at fault. But because the Mustang was showing intention to turn right, it's probably more of a 50/50 because neither were in the right. Classic case of 'When two cockwombles meet' I suppose But otherwise, you're correct. The main road has priority regardless of the side of the road they're driving on.
It always amazes me, the number of drivers pulling up to and out of junctions like that, whilst looking left... my car, which is braking to avoid you, is coming from your RIGHT.
3.30. totally the fault of the white car driver, you saw the lights, and although you're a bit higher the white car should have been able to see them too. He was driving too close and not paying attention. The police car positioning is irrelevant, they are emergency services and might need to stop anywhere, other road users have to bear that fact in mind no matter where they are; what if a horse had got on the road and the police were trying to catch it, or someone was on that bridge threatening to jump off? The police don't need to be worrying about where they stop their vehicles when dealing with emergencies. While I'm on my soapbox, I think part of the driving test for all new drivers should be to drive around an obstacle course in a truck, and ride a bike under controlled situations just to see what it's like using these modes of transport. That woman would have a far better perception. I've only driven a roadsweeper and a 13t tipper lorry but it taught me how much more room a truck needs and where the vulnerable points are with regards to visibility. Maybe a good idea would be to make new cyclists do the same thing, then they might think before cutting up the inside of lorries and buses, jumping red lights and ignoring crossings. It could be done on old airfields with little outlay, using scrap cars and timber work to imitate buildings. Just one days training would improve road safety greatly. I'm now off my soapbox.
Driving today is a lot safer in what it was back in the 7os, but unfortunately drivers of today drive to fast resulting in them misjudging there capabilities in trying to fit in with the fast moving traffic! I bought a motor home that is driven at 60 mph as I watch the fast drivers go by me as some come to a sudden halt! I now drive my EV at 60 mph and stay out of trouble! Time waits for nobody - so give yourself lots of time in advance to be where you are to be at that time - best be early - than ending up on a slab! It's not all about YOU, family and friends will miss you!
Good video but I would like to point out that the incident with you turning left with somebody overtaking at a junction is in part your fault although the manoeuvre by the idiot overtaking is reckless, there is no specific rule barring being on the 'wrong' side of the road near a junction (unless marked) if there is a justifiable reason. When turning left onto a road, you are, in most cases priority number three, which is why you should be looking left as well as right. For example, imagine he were passing a parked car or there's toddler who suddenly ambles into the road on his side and he's at a reasonable speed and not driving in such an aggressive manner, he may be on the 'wrong' side of the road but he would still have priority as he's already on the road and cannot reasonably foresee somebody turning left into it. What you often find in crowded areas is that somebody doesn't look left when turning left and then there is an impasse because there's no room to get by.
@2.49, the driver coming out of the side road still should have checked just in case an idiot was overtaking, it only takes a second to double check both ways to see if the road is clear to move out
This is a prime example of what happens with the public when the justice system decides to no longer penalise people for breaking the law. Honestly, what is the point of having a highway code if people / the courts don't enforce it?
Exactly right. It’s time these selfish morons were properly punished especially when they get caught again doing illegal driving. It’s never themself that get injured or killed but always an innocent driver or pedestrian that suffer.
The first video is from Point 7 in Leigh Park. Assuming that the camera is on a lorry, all the delivery drivers know NOT to drive that way. They are instructed to reverse in from the other end of that pass behind
Actively yielding when you have the right of way really shouldn't be a thing. People think they're being nice, but they're really throwing a wrench into the whole idea of driving predictably.
2:48 What is the law in Britain? As there is no solid line, in Germany the overtaking car would be right (but very careless!). Anyway, we learn always to watch both directions even when turning right (in Ger.) resp. left in Britain.
You're not wrong, under UK law that overtake, though a little wreckless, was perfectly legal. The cammer however, failed to stop completey at the markings on the junction and check that the road was clear before proceeding. Which would most likely be charged as driving without due care and attention under UK law resuling in points and a fine.
Sorry here, I'm an American, what I was taught, we all pay for the roads, so we must learn to share, be nice, forgive, and carry on. May God have mercy on our souls while we drive.
I know it's kind of a different experience for bikers as we don't have the benefit of a cage around us, but at 5:16 in the Forest Row video I'm already off the gas and ready to brake for the white Fiat that could have shot out from where the Esso sign is. By 5:20 I've already clocked the black car emerging from the junction as a moving hazard with a very high potential to continue into the road. There is a lot going on in this clip, but to actually have collided with the black car is just totally avoidable. That they were in the wrong is not relevant. Just very poor observation.
Was driving slowly in the USA once, in a quite dodgy area of Baltimore, when one of those insurance scammers, in this case a black female in her 20's, walked out into the road and pretended to bounce off my car, playing hurt. Fortunately I had a dashcam which I pointed to and said, "Honey, it's all on dashcam - are you SURE you want to call the police"? You should have seen her take off running like a greyhound! 😂😂
My understanding of the 3:00 rangerover at the junction was that although he clearly is an arse it is the car with the dashcam BEHIND GIVE WAY LINES that should not have pulled out when the range rover was (actually, legally) on the wrong side of the road.
Looks to me like you're advanced driving skills don't include a lot of the skills ordinary motorists have. Did you ever here of driving defensively or predicting what the other guy "might" do?
5:38 I live down the road where the car pulled out. The road itself is a massive nightmare and there are constantly crashes just further down the road from the video. Another major problem is the road layout and damages. Just down the road is the border between two County councils and neither communicate with each other.
Really poor editing and post-zooming to make it look worse than it was. And what's with writing stuff over the video? People can see what's going on! I suggest you watch some others and learn.
3:54 the police car was contributing to stopping a crash into the vehicle round the bend. The fact the the white car failed to stop is an indication that carelessness on the part of the driver of it was resulting in it driving dangerously.
Driver pulled out on me 6:40 cause me to break then break checked and cause me to behave like I complete knob accelerating excessively and showing what a knob he is to everyone watching this. Also I bet in your anger I bet you had no consideration to the cyclist ahead be interesting to see what you did a few seconds after the video ended.
People need to drive to the road/weather conditions. Just because a sign indicates a speed doesn’t mean you have to do that at all costs. Tailgating is illegal in most countries.
The speed limit is 70mph on dual carriageways in the UK. The Euro 100kmh and 120kmh class highway regulations did not pass in the UK. So the national speed limit remains 70 on dual carriage ways, 60 on single carriageways and 30 in built up areas.

They could have been after that car for any number of reasons.
Looks like something might have been thrown from the car
Would also help if the speed limit definition was actually correct. 70mph on Dual Carriageways/60mph on Single Carriage for Dual Purpose vehicles with an M1 classification. If they are rated N1 then they are 10mph less for both.
Or it could be the hard shoulder is a nice clear route to get away from the cops for any reason at all, especially at that speed

2:51 No-you didn't look left before turning into road
Far too busy chatting that’s why. Make a note of all the people that have been involved in an accident that you can actually see and they’re all women drivers. Enough said.
I was a witness to a similar accident many years ago. The overtaking driver was found to be at fault. The basis of this was that if you are on the wrong side of the road for any reason whatsoever, it is your responsibility to be certain that it is safe to do so.
@@rogerking7258 In this case the woman driver did not check that it was safe to enter the main road
They had time to brake, they chose to brake late to prove a point.
@@zbf5h89ftb They didn't even have to brake remotely hard, making unnecessary drama
As was the shit music, the overtake into the path of oncoming traffic and the speeding...
@@zbf5h89ftb I would brake as soon as the other vehicle pulled out so I wouldn’t need to emergency brake, simple.
You can tell the cammer's a dickhead by the way he reacts afterwards - overtaking forcing a car coming the other way to brake and aggressively accelerating in a school area. This is why it usually takes two idiots to turn a minor misjudgement into an accident.
Could be a good idea to look left before you pull out at a T junction just to make sure the road is clear - best not to assume!!
It's not easy to make dashcam videos boring, but you guys nailed it.
And with really crappy analyses too.
Touche.
An advanced driver should always anticipate what a bad or forgetful driver might do. The red van was always in your line of sight and as you was taking the first exit off the island your best place was the nearside lane then the problem would not have occurred. At least that's what I was taught on an advance driving course.
They should also be aware that in the case of a collision in that situation, the chances of not shouldering 50% of the blame is non-existent.
'Approach a roundabout in any convenient lane' but logic dictates that if you're turning left you want to be in lane number one. That red van followed the lane markings as far as I could tell and you drive in that lane to allow people to pass you.
Some crap driving there by all parties. When you place a dash cam in your vehicle be careful as often it will show up the owners crap driving.
The only saving grace was keeping the red VW on a diagonal. But I'm sure Julian can explain that to all his viewers............
That crash at 05.30, could see it coming a mile off!
appears the Driver didn't have his lights on, even though most other vehicles did; might've helped
Just thinking he same. Just slow down, let the car out and be on your way!

It also allows approaching vehicles to see the flashing amber hazard lights on both the rear of the stationary car or van as well as those located on the nearside of it.*
It also gives more room to open the nearside door and it is quite possible, though I was never taught this, that it is possible to exit the vehicle via the driver's door, not advisable if parked parallel to lane 1. This depends on the width of the shoulder and the angle chosen .. this final part is not advice, just an observation by myself.
My oh my, what an advanced driver you are Sir!
Half these "incidents" could have been avoided by the cam cars not driving like they own the road, the police cones were correctly placed also
2:45 never assume other drivers are doing the right thing, look both ways at junctions

In every civilized country, overtaking is forbidden through cross roads.
@@garryiglesias4074 .......... and eejit with camera nearly turned an error of judgement in to a stint of hospital food

No excuse.
The van that pulled and brake checked...well you know not to ever use their services
I think the use of “unbelievable” in the title might be a bit over stated. Everything in this video is quite believable.
It is getting worse statistically
2:39 Cammer is WRONG. See the dotted lines??? That was a legal overtake.

I may not be a great driver, but I can see that the "aggrieved" driver was almost looking for an accident, and was NOT driving defensively
Nearly everyone of these could have been avoided by the cammer.
I’ve yet to see a title like “Ignorant male driver” or “reckless male driver”.
cause women cant drive
Means that women driving badly is an anomaly
You always look both ways when WAITING to pull out of a junction
Classic case of 'When two cockwombles meet' I suppose
But otherwise, you're correct. The main road has priority regardless of the side of the road they're driving on.
It always amazes me, the number of drivers pulling up to and out of junctions like that, whilst looking left... my car, which is braking to avoid you, is coming from your RIGHT.
It still surprises me how many drivers have no idea how to use roundabouts.
3.30. totally the fault of the white car driver, you saw the lights, and although you're a bit higher the white car should have been able to see them too.
Good examples of driving standards in the UK ! and smart police!
And this video is proof that a cull on present licence holders needs to be had and the actual test needs to be a damn sight harder.

The general standard of driving now is abysmal... and dangerous!
Too many female driving instructors these days with not the right stuff. I’d say about 10% of female drivers are good.
8:12 she would not have got away with that. A flashing light, if present, only indicates the presence of a vehicle. (I've caught a few with that one)
Actively yielding when you have the right of way really shouldn't be a thing. People think they're being nice, but they're really throwing a wrench into the whole idea of driving predictably.
I always expect People to pullout of a junction infront of me. Seems like some of these speed up to capture footage of the "Bad Drivers"

At 2:48 you should have been looking to your to your left before pulling out. So you were both not paying attention.
Wrong, the RR was completely legal. It was cammer's fault for not yielding and then honking in misplaced anger.
