It's give and take in different areas from what I can see.
The intro, title screen and options menu look much better on the Saturn.
The character select screen looks much better presented in the PlayStation.
I'm trying to figure out which version is the vanilla game and which is supposed to be the update, because the respective title screens for each version are noting a different title for the game. The Saturn title screen looks a little nicer, again, but it is called "The Final Conflict" suggesting it's some updated version, so it should technically be better, right?
In terms of the in-game visuals, it's difficult to definitively say which looks better overall, there's different things going on here and I think it comes down to personal preference possibly offsetting the two on balance. I would say the Saturn version "pops at me" more obviously than the PlayStation one does.
The Saturn character models look better to me on the eye test compared to the PlayStation version, there seems to be more going on with the texture maps and overall density and detail of the models.
The interesting thing is the environmental design choices here for each version.
Just looking at the very first stage as an example, we can see the Saturn is using a depth of field effect to blur out the background, which seems to have a more creative design behind it, but it's difficult to tell how well this really looks because of the blur and whether that's helping or hindering it. The floors seem to have a better texture design too.
The PS version is using a more nuanced form of lighting compared to the Saturn on the first stage, trying to emulate a light sources to accentuate the better shadow detail (you can see this on the first stage). The backgrounds again are otherwise bland on the PS version, it's clear Zoom had to double down on the effects side where they could, rather than go for overall background detail. Apart from this first stage, everything else looks really flat on the PS version, to the point where you can no longer see as much detail on the models, it's quite strange really.
The PS version does have some weather effects in one of the stages that the Saturn does not, but overall, you'd have to say the Saturn seems to have better designed backgrounds, there's just more interesting things going on and more of it. The PS backgrounds look quite flat by comparison, it's here I think the Saturn's hardware does have an advantage with clever use of the VDP chips.
The PS version does has slightly more particle effects going on though.
Both versions look good for their own reasons, just a different approach.
Feels kinda like comparing a SNES game to a Genesis one again in many ways, it just comes down to personal preference on design choices used to get the most out of either hardware. the PS was better at the raw 3D geometry, but Zoom used the Saturn's VDP in ways here that just made their 3D emulation pop more than PS's actual 3D.
The Saturn was my console of choice back in that era and I still have no regrets, just looking at this.
Game looks kinda interesting, played many underground Japanese classics back in the day, but don't know how I missed this little gem.

This game (among others) proves that when a title is programmed specifically for each of the two consoles by taking into account their specificity in the game design, the PS1 and the Saturn can technically obtain similar results.

It looks like the went the extra mile with the presentation in the Saturn version, icons for each character in the HUD, level/map loading screen, dissolving effect for the losing character...
Playstation has more 'realistic' shadows vs the Saturn's pixel mesh ball.
Looks like it adopts a Virtua Fighter style control scheme, and armor destruction like Fighting Vipers.
I missed this one back then.

Disappointed they couldn’t get accurate shadows on Saturn. Even using the mesh, they should have done it. While the Saturn stages are more graphically impressive, from a design standpoint, they are weird. Very much a “I don’t know what I’m supposed to be looking at” kind of look vs PS1 looks like actual places that could exist somewhere, although a bit sparse, in comparison.
The Saturn only slightly gets an edge in the overall game. Perhaps a consequence of releasing the 3rd game the same year as the 2nd game. I’d imagine for the few who had the opportunity to play both when they were new would have been disappointed by the lack of overall innovation from the 2nd to 3rd game. If you only played one version when they were new, you’d be satisfied either way.

    • @ibrohiem

NOT a "true" comparison because the developer Zoom developed Zero Divide FIRST for Sony PlayStation which iirc released in late 1995 Japan or maybe early 1996 Japan and then the developer made a custom version of Zero Divide specifically for the Sega Saturn which released in 1997 and unlike the first PS1 game, it didn't get a North American or even European release because back then Sega of America's 90s management staff would claim that certain Japanese games for either Sega MegaDrive or Sega Saturn were not "good enough" which just means horrible and terrible management staff decisions.
Then the Sony PlayStation gets a sequel but for some weird reason it never got a North American release which just means that bad SoA energy was rubbing off on Sony Computer Entertainment America until they shook it off.
Therefore we never saw what developer Zoom could do if they made a part 2 for Sega Saturn.
This is like comparing Sega Rally Championship 1995 to Namco's Rage Racer in terms of graphics complexity and effects, etc when Rage Racer was the third game Namco's devs made while Sega Rally was just the first Sega Saturn game that Sega CS 1 Team made because thanks to Sega of America's 90s management they were stuck making 32X games that failed to sell at retail stores.
