2:18 the beautiful melody being played on the keyboard by John Paul Jones is an instrument called a mellotron. This was before synthesizers were around. Every key was connected to a length of audio tape. Each piece of tape had a recording of an actual instrument (flute, recorder, strings). So basically you are playing many tapes of prerecorded sound at the same time. They were notoriously prone to breaking and needing repair.

The 70 something Robert Plant seems to be rather embarrassed about the 20 something Robert Plant, but he has no real need to be. One is built on the ashes of the other, after all. And whatever his misgivings about this song now, it's certainly one of the things that keeps him a legend.

I hope you continue with more Zeppelin. The dual-necked guitar is a Gibson EDS-1275. It has 12 strings on the top neck and 6 strings on the bottom so guitarist Jimmy Page wouldn't have to switch guitars throughout the song. The recorder sound is from an instrument called a Mellotron and it was the precursor to a regular synth. Their music is full of heart, soul, and passion.

Yet another example of great British bands. Robert Plant recently made a second album with American, Alison Krauss. In 2021, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss released the 12-track studio album Raise the Roof, produced by T Bone Burnett, as a follow-up to Raising Sand. Accompanying the album's launch, Plant and Krauss performed a globally live-streamed set, broadcast from Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios.
Robert Anthony Plant CBE (born 20 August 1948) is an English singer and songwriter, best known as the lead singer and lyricist of the English rock band Led Zeppelin for all of its existence from 1968 until 1980, when the band broke up following the death of John Bonham, the band's drummer. He was inducted with the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
Plant enjoyed great success with Led Zeppelin from the late 1960s to the end of the 1970s. Wikipedia.

Music from before you were born. And what music. Led Zeppelin's greatness and fame especially in the 70s cannot be overstated. They were huge. And this song, Stairway to Heaven, is a regular anthem and iconic masterpiece that belongs to the very greatest of rock music. In addition there is the group's enormous influence on the development of metal-rock. With a certain parallel to you and your homeland, Led Zeppelin had their world premiere in Copenhagen in 1968, where they played two concerts in two different places. Back then, however, due to contractual obligations, they called themselves The New Yardbirds. And with another parallel to your home country, the singer, Robert Plant, performed at Roskilde Festival this summer with Allison Krauss. A more subdued and mature gentleman now, but he can still sing. For example, listen to their 2022 version of the opening track from the 1971 LP/CD that also featured Stairway; Rock and Roll:

For the older rockers amongst us, Stairway to Heaven is considered an anthem This song was the subject of some past controversy, the suggestion being that if sections of the song were played backwards, satanic messages were revealed. I can’t comment on this, I’ve never tried playing it backwards..neither do I intend to. Lyrically the song is beautiful. Musically the song is structured with precision and style. (Played forwards 🤪🤪) Overall, it deserves its rightful place as a rock masterpiece. Sabina, you looked completely absorbed by this performance, showing due respect for a classic..loved it.

@@waywardspirit7898 A few bands of note have been hauled over the media coals regarding satanic messages..Guns and Roses, Black Sabbath (no huge shocks with Sabbath) and others. Past litigation in the US has ensued over the years. From memory, no plaintiff has ever won a case when suing a band..usually the parents of a teenager who has taken his/her life. I find it quite a bizarre thing for bands to do…can’t imagine Maria Carey doing it…but you never know.

It’s nothing more than Mondegreen effect, these stories about devil worshipping in lyrics were totally fabricated back then because Religious communities and the establishment then referred to their music as the devils music because it wasn’t Beethoven 😂,bare in mind this was over 50 years ago or more, if someone told you what certain words sound like be it played backwards or forwards you brain subliminally hears it, its phenomenon, I mean black sabbath most members wore crosses round their necks and wrote anti war songs, hardly devil worshipping.

Very much enjoyed your reaction, thanks. Great song but just the tip of the Zeppelin iceberg. Greatest rock band to ever grace the earth. If you have an interest in doing a deep dive into Led Zeppelin, which I doubt you would regret, I suggest that you start with album 1, track 1 and just keep on going. The guys were incredibly talented and versatile. I recommend that you listen to studio versions first, followed by a live performance if you can find one (some of their songs were never performed live, or there isn't decent audio/visual video out there of many of their performances). Again, thanks and I hope you do much more Zeppelin in the future. BTW, were all the stills placed there on purpose? My memories...this song and the album it was on were the first Led Zeppelin I got hooked on, when I was about 12 (in 1972). The Madison Square Garden concerts (1973), which the video was taken from, was then turned into the Led Zeppelin movie 'The Song Remains The Same, BUT they released the double LP soundtrack first (1976), with some different tracks from the movie, which was finally in theaters late 1976 or early 1977. I remember getting my older sister to take me to see it on IMAX, which was pretty new at the time. We didn't have much in the way of video, I think I finally got a VHS version of it in around 1982. Since then you mainly see the film versions of the songs, though I still think the soundtrack album is well worth a listen...there is the song 'Celebration Day' on that one, a truly great live version, as well as other nuances in the other songs that probably only a true audiozephile would notice. Hope you do more Zep reactions, but try to avoid the freezes, they really put me off speed. I DO like how you did the text comments during the reaction, so that's a keeper! Enjoy!

Yep, having heard and seen this one of three night back then, many times, I was not there, once or twice the fidget in the back ground did catch my eye once or twice, not a problem I still read all the onscreen comments.

Now this is a MUST: Watch Heart - Stairway to Heaven Led Zeppelin - Kennedy Center Honors from December 2012. The group, Heart, with the Wilson sisters, cover this song. Led Zeppelin's original drummer, the late John Bonham, is replaced by his son, Jason Bonham and absolutely kills it! Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones are in the honorary seats in the balcony and get emotional during the performance. It was done so well. Enjoy!

Led Zeppelin and The Doors are in a tier1 by themselves. Everyone else can go into teir2 etc. In my system anyway. Maybe check out something by the Doors. When The Musics Over. They have a live version of that from somewhere if you like the live stuff.
