Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

"I came to your shores TO USE YOU" Blackthorne is gonna have no chill after episode 9's ending and I got chills with that line delivery
Toranaga will answer in english (portugese) : I know you did.
Toranaga: "I used you to use me to use you"
@Mr.Hyde_23 lol
haven't read the book or seen the previous show but now you got me thinking that he's been able to speak Portuguese all along and that was just another one of his "falcon" games keeping it concealed@@lockdown3151
Actually sounds like an absurd line but hopefully in context it will make some sense.

It's a phenomenal show indeed, but I somehow feel like it will be overshadowed by House of the Dragon Season 2. Idk, we will see.

Best extra actor as well
The samurai with the butter smooth double kill in ep 9 deserves it
Blackthorne: I came to your shores to use you!
Toranaga: Your tone seems very pointed right now.
Just imagine Toranaga respond to Blackthorne in fluent English in that scene...
It's the scene where the Ajin pledges to commit sepuku, and he really means it.

Easily the #1 show so far this yr & only HOTD honestly will have a chance to compete with Shogun. I hope HOTD season 2 is either at least just as good or the tiniest of tiny just barely better than Shogun bcuz Shogun is a super amazing/phenomenal show real talk yo 💯💯💯

@@jameswhite1450 This series was different on purpose. They wanted to show the Japanese pov over John.

I happen to live in Japan and went to Hirado last week, where the remains of Williams Adams, were left. A beautiful little town, lots of vestige architecture of the trading era still remains to this day..
The reloading speed of Blackthorne's flint lock pistol in the last episode was really impressive...
A pistol can be reloaded 3x a minute, and faster than that if using no ram rod (which is what he did, no ramrod).

Really hope this has an awards cleanup this year - deserves to win in every category. The detail is insane - love the accompanying podcast too!
Lead actor? Not really
Blackthorne is going down as one of my favourite TV performances ever. I love the accent and character Cosmo has brought to him.
Yeah he's great, he said injects so much character as is the uncle to Omi also great.
I’m not ready to say goodbye to all these characters.

😭😭😭😭
In a parallel universe where I live the show ends with a 6 hr 2 part epic.
Great show. The Battle of Sekigahara will probably only be shown as short clips in the last episode. I know There will only be this season, But they should really have made a BIG conclusion with a 2 hour episode or something, show the battle and all the drama during the battle its a EPIC historical piece. But ye the budget for the show is pretty small so we have to take what we can get.
Man I hope They make more Japanese Authentic shows like this in the future. Its so cool
yeah, I think they had limited budget and spent it on the actors, the period piece coaching and the set/costume design. Sigh.
The budget for the show is already the biggest FX ever handeled. Not to mention the marketing expenses.
they should have made a 4 hour finale.
@@P.Whitestrakeprobably still not enough to mount a full length battle.
I am pretty sure that in the book the battle was only briefly mentioned. Like, "yeah btw that happened, but anyway..." It is a great opportunity, but I doubt that the showrunners will go out of their way to make it if they have such a good excuse not to do it with already limited time and budget.
It started with yabushige boiling a prisoner and it will end with him being boiled
Good idea for the cheeky little rat
Yabu is awesome though!
But yes, he deserves this 👏
Boy been switching sides😂
Don't be surprised he switch back.
@ngshawn-um9tp I bet he does, and Toranaga makes him commit Seppuku.

Oda is the best period in japan history
@@zerovikings5852there also the African samurai with oda there was some important thing they both saw together they can talk about Takeda and Usegai feud
This show is set in the early 1600's. I'm sure you can find lots of stuff on William Shakespeare or the Pilgrims coming to America.
@@calebguajardo8236I think WB is currently developing a movie about the African samurai
I'm reading a really great book set in this time period called "Musashi". It's a *bit* different, but the setting is still there.
It takes place immediately after the events of this story in the aftermath of The Battle of Sekigahara. Two young men, Takezō and Matahachi, who fought for the West and survived, start a journey back to their hometown, killing tons of people along the way. After getting captured by a Buddhist monk, Takezō realizes the importance of life and vows to change his ways, and learn the Way of the Sword.
It's a great story filled with action, drama and romance. Amazingly written male and female characters alike, and wonderful philosophical messages.
There's also a manga called "Vagabond" which is an adaptation of the book which more or less gets the gist of it while also being entirely different. Much faster read, although it's not finished.
I thought this entire series was VERY eloquent and very well thought and filmed.
I enjoyed it to the last moment.
People probably expected the large battle with Ishido, but you could tell a few episodes in, Toronaga had already gone to battle. Made his sacrifices and won.
The true story of what happened at Osaka was different but not much. There was an intellectual battle and an actual attack on the castle. I thought this take on the story of the beginning of the end of the Samurai was 100% intellectual and made for a most excellent miniseries. It was beautifully filmed. The captions well placed so we could see the emotions.
I read how long it had taken to make this as particularly crafted as it is and that is no small feat. Time not wasted.
if it doesn't win a single award next year I will be so angry!!!

hip hip hoooooo... 💓
The best series I've watched in many years. Now I watch it over and over again. I got so used to each character that it became a member of my family.
What's great about this script and acting is that Ieyasu's strategic strategies and his fatherly raccoon demeanor are always hidden behind Sanada Toranaga's back as layers. The artistry of this work was enhanced by depicting that era as it was, without relying on the various ideologies that often conflict in modern times. A valuable and wonderful work. However, from the Japanese perspective, ``He made it to the Osaka camp, became the Seii Taishogun, and in both name and reality, Edo became the world's largest urban population and prosperous metropolis, and a world of peace and peace was born.'' I wanted you to do it until then. It's a pity that there is no season 2.
Last episode, I want more 😭
Phenomenal series. Thanks to EVERYONE involved I am thoroughly enjoying the experience that is Shogun.
Anna Sawai is stunning and talented . Well done for casting her . Hopefully we will see more of her in the future !

And she's a Kiwi ;) Chipped her tooth in the samurai sequence in ep 9 and kept on fighting

Goodbye Mariko-sama
Next year Emmy awards loading...
Everyone involved in this show deserves major props. Its so good in so many ways. I hope they are hearing and seeing all the praise they are getting from viewers. It's well deserved. If it gets snubbed for any awards, its because awards are irrelevant, not because they did anything wrong. Honoring the audience and the source material are more important than any of that Hollywood nonsense and its very apparent that their priorities are straight.
Awards don't really matter but for recognition sake I hope they honor the entire cast and crew in some way or other. This show is really setting the bar.

True. Either you end as a great TV series or continue long enough to see yourself becoming mediocre.
Yeah it's a great format for storytelling. Some of the best things I've ever seen have been miniseries.
I agree. I think one or two seasons is good enough for a series to hold my interest. But 5, 10, or 12 yrs or something is overkill.
Agree, But I think 2 seasons is better for a show like this. or make it 16 episodes.
OMG, looks like final episode is so exciting !! Just watching this trailer, I got chills !! What am I gonna do after Shogun ends?!!
This show does the book justice! So good!
Yes! They took the Blackthorn moment when he is willing to commit Seppuku to supporting Mariko as the second, a brilliant decision. They actually elevate parts of the book that stumble at being realistic to Japan during the Sengoku and sometimes by incorporating the narrative point.
Yes & No as this version of Shōgun has missed a lot from the book but from the most part it’s been accurate. If you want an actual justice to the book then i would suggest you watch the 1980 original Shōgun.
@@SukiOG Why do i need to compare this with a book ? I get that the source material is from a book but c'mon now, this is a tv show. You book people really need to get down from your high horses and start watching these shows independently, without always pointing out what they missed from the book and what not. It's meaningless to most of the crowd who haven't read the books but just watch the show for some entertainment.
I hope they remake Tai-Pan or Noble House next!
They really should, FX has an amazing formula going with these short series.
And Gai-Jin also!!
Tai pan is amazing

Unlikely :-)
They're doing a wave of promotion (e.g. Anna being on talk shows) right before the finale. Even the clips they're showing are from episode 9. Pretty odd choice to do a promotion run so late into the season... unless they're cooking something truly special for the finale, like a 2 hour episode or a full blown portrayal of Sekigahara.
I hope we get Sekigahara.

I love shogun, and maybe this is just an issue with my expectations, but I’ve been craving at least one big action set piece. Like there are all these scenes with these huge armies and it feels like a tease. I just want one big battle 😭
From what I hear...don't get your hopes up. This will be subtle.
Incredible show!!!
"Shogun" is one of my favorite novels of all time and I was excited to here of the remake. There were of course a few things that I would have done differently or at least, in a different order but over all, I certainly enjoyed the mini series. I was especially impressed with Anna Sawa's portrayal of Lady Toda Mariko. Her character being very complex and probably being the most important sjngle character of the entire Shogun Saga. That solitary line by Lord Toranaga, " I sent a woman to do, what an entire Army could not" just sums up, just how much of a true badass Lady Toda Mariko was. Hiroyuki Sanada, performance was also spot on especially taking on the role once played by Toshiro Mifune, and would have been an act nearly impossible for many to follow and pull it off but Hiroyuki Sanada found away to do just that and in his own way. I'm actually sorry the mini series has ended.
Love it waiting for the finale.
Had no idea who Cosmo Jarvis was, and now believe this dude is an incredible actor!
We need season 2.
Season 2 please 😢
Best everything. This show is a masterpiece. So powerful and moving. The writing and acting and every small detail is perfection. The poetry exceptional and the imagery is so smart! God this show is incredible and episode 9 was so painfully beautiful. I was shaking from its many heartbreaking climatic moments all of which are centered around Mariko. Mariko encapsulates fragility and strength all at once. Her loyalty is eternal. Her spirit is forever bound to her everlasting words.
I am not a Japanese. But I implore you to bring Shogun Season 2 to us!!! #Shogunseason2
Exciting for the finale.
FUJI IS BACK! Not gonna lie, that's what I care about most.
This show is lightning in a bottle, a true masterpiece...
Anna Sawai just absolutely destroyed episode 9.
The tea scene in ep 8 has already been something to behold, but ep9 was just chilling.

The tea scene was terrible compared Teshigahara's Ryuku, the greatest Japanese tea ceremony ever put on film. Shogun was amateur hours in comparison.

Sad to know this great show is ending soon but happy to see its success and the desire people have expressed to see more productions like this one, historical accuracy can be appealing, unlike what Hollywood thinks.
And now there are rumors that Hollywood wants to make a movie about Yaskue the only black " Samurai " known. Let alone its not known if he actually had the rank of Samurai or if he was just a show of.
@@Floh-yf7yz The movie has been in the works for a while. Chadwick Boseman was supposed to be Yasuke, but he passed away.
@@Floh-yf7yz He was a samurai, but pretty much like Blackthorn in the show. Just an empty title. He was kept around as a curiosity by Nobunaga and later dismissed as "non-human" by Mitsuhide Akechi, sent to some Portuguese dudes and then disappeared forever. Any movie about Yasuke would need to make 95% of his life completely up, because reality would upset a lot of people.
"Historical accuracy"...yes, that's exactly why we had a completely fictional adaptation of Shinobi in episode 9, which reduced them to cartoonish Ninja. There was NOTHING accurate about that.
Shogun is a masterpiece. We need FX to launch a series of limited series with the exact team from Shogun, inspired in rich historical stories from the Japanese culture. MORE HITS GUARANTEED
I loved (the now dated) eighties original with Richard Chamberlain, but it must be said: the modern retelling of Shōgun is what the word “epic” was coined for. A masterpiece of paced nuanced storytelling with amazing production and a stellar cast. I have been gripped every single episode.
The original is better is so many other ways, in which the modern one fails at. First of all, you have Toshiro Mifune, who by himself clears the entire cast of the new one. And secondly, it was ENTIRELY shot in Japan, so you're actually watching Japan in a show that's about Japan. Rather than watching Vancouver disguised as Japan which, as flexible as Vancouver is, is simply one thing it'll never be able to disguised itself as.
The only thing the new one has over the original one is historical accuracy(which is not that great by the way, as they gave us an incredibly fictional adaptation of Shinobi that really boiled them down to Ninja, meaning to what Americans think Shinobi are).
fantastic series shogun simply beautiful
I really hope they're able to tie this bow beautifully, because there seems to be so much more left to tell in this story.
You know it’s a great show when a main character is killed and you get emotional. The ending last week left me speechless.
I wish this wasn't a miniseries. Yall should be making 10 more seasons of this.
I hope that last episode will be 2 hours long instead of 50 minutes plus
I really hope FX considers adapting more of Cavells Asia saga. Tai Pei, GiaJin, Nobel House, and Whirlwind are all epics stories
