FINDING THE HONEY HOLE!! Fly Fishing an Incredible Spring Creek for Brown Trout.
I think it’s every fisherman’s dream to walk up to the side of the stream and see dozens of fish swimming around without a care in the world. And when that inevitably happens one day it’ll have you second guessing how you’ve never fished the creek before, or why you’ve overlooked this spot for so long. In the case of this video there were so many fish at one point that I questioned whether I was even allowed to be fishing… and that’s how you know you’ve found the honey hole. Welcome back to another video.
I was getting chances at fish but they were few and far between. I had a gut feeling the fish were feeding on midges or some sort of small emergers, but I didn’t have a fly that perfectly imitated it and they just weren’t having it. And to rub it in my face they were literally jumping out of the water in front of me, almost as if they were laughing in my face. So in a moment of frustration I put on a jig steamer, which is something I tend to do when the fish are being difficult. It usually either works well of completely spooks everything, which is something I was willing to risk… And it totally changed the game.
For whatever reason this section of creek was absolutely loaded with fish… and I mean hundreds of them. I decided to grab my actual streamer setup and try to see if I could catch a larger fish, which resulted in some incredible clips which you’re watching right now. But I think Sometimes when you’re fishing places like this it can be just as fun to watch the fish come up and follow the streamer as it is actually catching the fish. There’s just something about a spring creek that get’s a fly fisherman excited, including myself, even though often times they can be frustrating and difficult to fish. After messing around with the big streamer I decided to nymph to see if I could catch one more fish before I moved on.

Love that you’re posting a video that includes the struggle. It’s just as much a part of the game as the days you go out and crush it.
When they’re splashing like that and not taking the dry, try throwing an unweighted midge off the back of your dry fly. Caught a ton of picky fish doing that.
Great vid dude!
We all struggle, that's part of it! And yeah I figured that's what I needed to do, or throw a small scud. BUT I didn't have any weightless midges with me and I only had one scud imitation and it was far too big. In other words I need more flies! HA!
Thanks for watching
Glad you are feeling better. Been waiting on the next great video.
It’s a great feeling when it all comes together. I’ve similar results swinging a softhackle.
I’ve never tried that, I need to add it to the arsenal
Wow that water is so clear! Looks like a special place!
It’s pretty awesome! Thanks for watching
That is a beautiful creek and some gorgeous fish. Good day.
Thank you!
That stream is beautiful, what a place god gave us
It's mid summer and he's calling it a Spring creek. What a goof!😆
They are also known as 'chalk-streams.' They could be actual rivers. The porous, carbonate-type bedrock allows many springs to pop up from the uphill aquifer.
Should’ve called it a summer creek! 😄😂
@@PaulN-x2q Sure but then you don't know what season it is.
That first river looked fantastic, just like the chalk streams in the UK.
Looks like a very tricky River. All the vegetation at the surface and clear water. I would definitely use four poumd or less
There's a lot of nice fish in there because it's a tough spot to fish with all those mats of vegetation on the surface but it's a classic spring creek.
Yeahhh spring creeks are always tough 😂 they’re cool though!! Thanks for watching
Fished that creek for the first time a week ago. Those fish are super cool to see. Also saw a bear out there so be careful next time!
I looked off a bridge the other day right on the main street near where I live. There was a school of big Browns and Rainbows just cruising. Nobody fishes there, zero pressure. I then looked for somewhere to park.
Sounds like you’ve found your honey hole!
i seen that but its very illegal to fish it 😭
@@KC2688Why?
@@tonycamplin8607 cus i live in southern california and the steelhead here are very endangered, so u can’t fish in any of the trout streams that connect to the ocean (and all the ones around me connect to the ocean)
@@KC2688 Thanks.
thank you, beautiful stream and fish!
Yessirrr! Let’s go boys! Hope summers treating you guys well!
Thanks Its been hot real hot In california ,I wish i was up northern California..
You should make hats or t shirts, I would definitely buy one! Great vids as always 🎉
Love the new camera angles:))
Love your videos! Keep ‘em coming!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you man for everything. I’ve basically taught myself how to fly fish this summer, with a little tips from family but mainly just me. I have learned a lot of tips from you. Thanks man!!
That's awesome!! Glad you've been learning to fly fish. I wish you the best of luck on your next adventure!
@@hardmanfishing Thank you so much man!!
That is a beautiful place to fish, thanks for sharing another great adventure. Tight Lines!
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video!
this place looks like fantasy 😮
Awesome fisheries 🎣 Enjoyed👍
Nice grand slam Jon
Hi John, glad to hear yout cold is gone. I sometimes also fish this kind of 'slow water' creeks and it is fun. About that dropper: did you ever consider to put 2 dry flies on? You should, because it works often well.
I honestly didn’t, but I need to. It might have worked honestly. The issue I find with these creeks is you get one shot usually with a dry fly and then the fish get put down 😂 thanks for watching!
Love the video! Huge browns!
What weight is your rod and reel?
Fish on!
You slayed🤭
How do you catch so many fish? I generaly don’t catch anything, but i watch you catching so many. Thank you!
Keep up the good videos!
I’ve just been doing it for a while I guess 😂 but thank you!
Liked the variety of camera angles. Give your gf a raise. And take her along more often!
I’ve been trying to switch it up with some different camera angles to keep it fresh! And I definitely will!
I was there last week. 2 weeks ago they didn’t mow so the grass was like 4 ft tall. Caught a monster brownie.
I wish I had caught a monster brownie! Thanks for watching
Welcome to VA...😁
I haven't fished there for 20 years because I moved out of the area. I pretty much only fished streamers. Dries always seemed to get tiny fish. Interesting that there were so many smaller stockie bows. Only used to catch browns and an occasional jumbo bow migrating from private water. Used to be only fingerling browns stocked.
That’s awesome! Yeah I only saw stocked trout and nothing was massive. I saw one larger fish that quickly disappeared and I’m sure there were others.
Since you moved want to let me know what creek this is
Awesome video and beautiful, beautiful water. Love the honesty and the content of endeavor and success of landing some really nice fish. Keep slaying and I don't give a rip what the uppity haters complain and say Keep being you Jon, great job. And always tight lines. Sincerely, Tony Walkingstick 🙏 ❤😊
Thanks for the kind words Tony! Glad you enjoyed the video
You’re in Virginia, one of my favorites, there are wild trout there too
I wish I had caught one of the wild trout!
perfect
Spring creeks always produce finicky fish for me. I once spent over 2 hours on one fish that rose to a lot of different flies and rejected all of them. Gave up, sat down and had lunch and a brown of almost 30 inches cruised by which I promptly spooked....
LOL I'm not sure I've spent 2 hours on a fish but I've definitely messed with one for an hour before😂 the 30 inch brown would have pushed me over the edge I think! Thanks for watching the video
Looks like Big Spring Creek a bit
What App do you use/suggest to find these smaller streams for fly fishing ?
that second fish looked like he had some red band in him
Tanks Nice video
leave it to you to find a fishing location where fish are literally chomping at the bit to eat hehehe
That water color etc is beautiful.. Are you in USA ? Just found your channel, been disabled last couple yrs due to you know s. H. o. T. . Legs are F'd. Poor circulation all of a sudden. At least I didn't die when hundreds of thousands unfortunately did. God Bless their souls. I used to go fly fishing in my area , New Hampshire USA. Some great streams, though sometimes have to share them with A Bear or Two,, OR a SABAE ( Sasquatch )... IF they Aren't alone & with Family, ( little ones , still 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 ' tall juveniles are in one area ) Must give them whole darn Stream .. lol. Yes We have them in New Hampshire, Ct, Massachusetts, NY upper State, Maine etc right into Canada.... I'm a knower , not just a Believer.
Stay Safe Stay Healthy Positive and Blessed. God Bless us all. Amen.
✌️ Peace from Big Jim New Hampshire USA aka Boston Strong
That stream has been on my short list for a while Jon. Next time you're down this way, give me a shout, we'll shoot a video together. Tight lines!
Judging by all the vegetation in the creek, I'm guessing you are somewhere in Pennsylvania. Am I wrong?
My guess was Letort Run
was that first rainbow a stocker? No adipose fin on that guy...
Yep!
*TIP* I saw you missing the hook sets. All you need to do to set the hook with a fly rod is simply pull your line like your stripping it but a little harder and keep you rod tip down to have the weight of the fish on the spine of the rod otherwise you loose line tension fast and lose fish. Give it a try!Good Luck!
the fish were jumping out of the water cause they were excited to see you I think
Hey man I love your content and I have a question about fly snaps. Have you ever used them and what's your experience if you have ?❤
I have no idea what a fly snap is honestly 😂
It's a little metal thing that allows you to change flies without retying
You should do a lake fly fishing tutorial.
I would but I’m no lake fishing expert 😂 it would be like the blind leading the blind
Hey man I love your videos I really want to start making videos myself and I was wondering what you use to edit
Adobe premier pro
Three trout species… ✅
Can you share your euro nymphing leader formula?
the jumping fish tried to get rid of your snapped fly 🙂
I didn’t snap a fly off😂
If you don’t mind me asking why do fly fishermen never keep their fish?
Wich weel are you using
What camera do you use?
What reel are you using?
Did you break a fly off in that fishes mouth that was jumping?
Nope! I didn't break off any flies, they're just jumping for fun I guess 😂
Is this in michigan?
Hey which state have you found the best trout fishing spots in?
I feel defeated. I’m throwing pristine flies that have never been smashed by a fish and I can’t catch anything. You’re throwing a half broken down streamer that’s 75% hook and smashing trout. Not fair dude. Not fair.
To be fair I was without a fish for probably the first hour or two 😂 but yeah sometimes fishing doesn’t make sense. Thanks for watching!
Letort?
Thanks for all the Hairsplitting Hardcore Hardman Honeyhole Habilitations....Hallelujah
Until carp find a home there
Come on, why dont you show us some love and tell us where your'e fishing? I live in BC Canada anyways... And if you want to see content similar to this I have some on my channel, but nothing close to as good as the content on this channel.
Every time you touch that fish you take the chance of injuring it by your asids on you hands I know it very small but please don't touch them with your hands
First of all you spelled “acids” wrong. Second of all the oils / sweat on your hands isn’t what hurts the fish, it’s the dry sandpaper like texture. Essentially you rub off the slime coating which protects the fish from infection and therefore their chances of survival drops. But if you wet your hands and handle fish delicately then you’re fine.
This isnt fly fishing. Using a long rod and haevy bug to lob out there is NOT fly fishing. This Euro thing is crap. Flyfishing is casting a FLY LINE, not lobbing out something on mono.
How does it feel sitting up there on your high horse? 😂
shut up nerd
How dare he constantly claim he is Fly Fishing throughout the video.
I have my own idea of what fly fishing is too. Yet, at the end of the day, for me, angling is a vehicle for a perspective change. If you go fishing, enjoyed some scenery, didn't get hammered by golf-ball-sized hail, and held your balance on slippery or unstable rocks, then who cares?
I guess you think all trout chasing is like "A River Runs Through it" If you actually were a trouter , you would know all the different situations that we face when fly fishing. You sound like a bitter little 14 year old trying to be "right" about something and instead looking like a fool. Actually I deduct that you know next to nothing about fly fishing or have tried to zero success. Hint: Try to be a nicer version of yourself, this one sucks
