Listening to this score brings back so many bitter and sweet memories of my first marriage. We went to see this picture when it first came out. Have you ever loved someone but to stay with them was sure death. Every day was like watching a train wreck. RIP Nita, still love you.
This week we are able to take a listen to Jerry Goldsmith's score for "Islands On The Stream", thanks to a request which was taken long ago! The score is one of the composers finest contributions for film with a very beautiful sense for color and not surprisingly one of his own favorites, which he also re-recorded himself for Intrada Records in mid 80's. However, this recording here is the original that was taken for the film. Enjoy!
Thanks a lot for another winner, Friend Fred ! I recall seeing this movie at a local multiplex theater years ago when it was first released. Based on a novel by Ernest Hemingway that he didn't feel was ready for publication while he was alive. After his death, his widow Mary allowed for it and many other of his previously unpublished or unfinished works to be published. Another great soundtrack from Jerry Goldsmith ! You're the BEST, Fred !! :-)
It's a difficult question! I didn' t hear the music for quite some time, but let's put it this way: if Trevor Jones is involved we won't get much to dislike. :-) Maybe we will feature the music here some time in the future... Fred
I wonder often how Jerry composed great score after great score for 40 years straight, if he were still here today I can just imagine the stuff he would come up with.
You do beautiful work ST Fred. Thanks for introducing me to many wonderful soundtracks. I am now beginning to collect these works on vinyl. Many a pleasant hour spent enjoying the fruit of your labor. From the bottom of my heart, Thank You!
Echt atemberaubend!
Not a great movie, or a great adaptation of a great book, but JG elevates this to a near claasic. The music that accompanies the final scenes - occurring in some life and death version of the main character's home - are heart rendering for me so many years after 1st seeing it.
I was thinking Papillon more myself, but yes, very redolent of Goldsmith's style. This was late '70s, when - dare I say - IMO JG was at the height of his considerable powers.
Goldsmith never scored a Robocop film, Basil Poledouris did the 1st and 3rd, Leonard Rosenman did the 2nd. Poledouris was heavily influenced by JG's style though--just listen to the opening credits to Conan and Total Recall to see them copying each other again.
@@johncaudill9782 You're right - I think it was established eventually that Poledouris had quoted Goldsmith's Capricorn One in his Conan title, so Goldsmith quoted Poledouris in his Total Recall title, as a bit of composer banter.

In memory of one of the greatest film movie composer who passed away twenty years ago on this day .

Soundtrack Fred Would you consider the soundtrack for Last of the Mohicans? I know it’s been played to death, but I really like it.

A marvelously beautiful score.
Goldsmith at his finest.
Amazing, how many different musical styles here..
I grew up in Hawaii, I remember watching this one wknd as a kid and thinking how lucky I was to grow up near the ocean.
Sometimes I get in this mood. This helps. I love the sound. It helps me forget. It helps me rembember.
I think I know exactly what you are saying.

In a Sky Arts documentary on George C Scott recently they covered his career but never once mentioned, this, what for me, was his best movie.
I was literally just about to look this one up!

Beautiful score! Strangely, I hear a very similar tone as Planet of the Apes music. I guess that is the style of Goldsmith.
I was thinking Papillon more myself, but yes, very redolent of Goldsmith's style. This was late '70s, when - dare I say - IMO JG was at the height of his considerable powers.
Fred, may I ask - do you do these mixes yourself?
Hello Sue,
yes I do the mixes by myself. Thats the fun part for me with them. :-)
Fred
Double like
It's funny some of the motifs in here he reused in Robocop when Murphy has flashbacks.....

@@WeAtG17 I didn't know that about Capricorn 1--that's very cool. The two obviously had a mutual respect for each other.
