This story made me very happy, and sad. I lived in Kugluktuk as a boy 45 years ago. I probably knew some of these kids grandparents as children. thank you for investing your heart in them
I played a kugluktuk soccer team in a tournament and they were absolutely incredible, they beat us in the finals and took the gold I was super happy for them
:( so fucking sad... this movie "grizzlies" made me open my mind to what these kids go through... and I'm indigenous from Calgary... I didn't understand what they go through.. i'm glad I saw this movie... I understand
I love how they showed pictures of the real people at the end and showed how they are doing now and what they are up to . The movie was so sad those kids are so strong
When I worked in Canada as an intern, I read a script based on this story and it teared me up. Watching the video and seeing the actual people, I'm in tears even more 10+ years later
We are a new family to lacrosse up here in Canada. Heard about the movie and took a lot from it. Just found this clip weeks later. Incredible is the human spirit.
This was really awesome Russ ?I am so happy that you did this.. this is a great story but my kanyen'kehaka friend down there is right , for us lacrosse is not just a game or a sport. It is a medicine for both the players and the spectators. A healing. This is what it is supposed to do.
i too come from a reserve. to see the way these kids embrace the game really touched me. coming from a location where lacrosse is played year round in beautiful facilities i realize that i have taken the sport for granted. seeing this piece made me smile a little more. it makes me a lil homesick to go back to ontario to play. very touching & inspirational story
wow I live in Australia and just because of Eric Schweig being in the Movie i got interested in what it was about..Im so glad i found this news item about it and the wonderful teens.. Well done kids..keep up the great work.. Never give up!.. You are worthy and you are wanted .. Hugs from Australia x
Watching this shit in 2021 pumps me the fuck up! I have a son who is native out here in NM. Thanks for the inspiration. And the Realization that we all need a channel or outlet to exercise or hush all of our demons.
The story and movie such an inspiration and eye opener to all sorts of life struggles hate becuse of consequences of genocide, poverty, hunger, depression, abuse, alcoholism, drug addiction, suicide.... Don't judge a book by its cover, behind a taugh, angry person their is pain and a cry for help. See the signs, hear the cry and stretch your hand in help to your neighbor in need.

My uncle is Russ Sheppard, he's my hero and I'm proud to know him.
Your uncle truly is a hero to a lot of people - young and old! He's inspired a lot of us to try and replicate what he accomplished in Kugluktuk!
It's crazy cuz I just watched The Grizzlies Canadian movie in my Indigenous-studies english class and it was such a solid movie

What an inspirational story. Kyle's testimony was truly moving. How amazing, so much can be done in such a remote place.
