Cinema always enhances the watch experience to me. The only negative is the occasional dickhead in the audience, but in general it is a great time that is way more immersive than at home.
I never had that experience where someone would be rude. Most of the time people would cheer/clap like in a Marvel movie or just laugh at a funny scene.
thats because a lot of movies are literally BUILT to be watched in cinemas, as in directors will plan a lot of things based on the movie's format and the theatre experience. You are literally missing out on the movie's full potential if you don't see it in a cinema basically.
Deadass have spent 10 years putting a home theatre together because I can’t stand other people in the cinema and I have a bladder problem so I like being able to pause films
To Connor, two reasons I wouldn't want to go see a movie in a cinema: 1) That shit is way too expensive. I can afford it, but I also *can* afford all kinds of other things I shouldn't waste money on. 2) It is physically impossible to make an AV setup impressive enough that watching a movie on it while stuck in a large room full of other people will be an experience worth having, at least for me. It's got nothing to do with being too much trouble, it's just an experience I actively don't want to have and now I have alternate options on the very rare occasions a movie comes out that I want to see.
There’s a really nice movie theater I go to that’s in a more rural(but not middle of nowhere) area, so even with brand new highly anticipated movies I can always find a screening with just a handful of people in there. When there is a packed theater since it’s in a rural area, there’s rarely any rowdy theater goers being a distraction. For me going to the movies and having the movie theater popcorn makes seeing the film more of an event, and brings me back to the joys of my childhood. It’s one of my favorite experiences out there.
This is so sad to hear. You are way to comfortable in your own home the whole point of cinema is to experience it with others. Discuss it, experience it, share the moment. You’ve been coded to find any excuse to not leave the house because it’s not as “comfortable” as if that’s what should always trump your decisions.
Honestly I’ll go to the theater if it’s a movie I am excited for or I’m invited to watch it with someone else. Otherwise I’d rather watch at home. Like I get going for the experience, but also sometimes it’s a gamble on the people around you and how it effects it
Cinema experiences will always hold a special place in my heart. It's also about the company that joins you and the theater itself. But also as a cinephile who is introverted, at home is a great option too. I saw Resident Evil in IMAX and it wasn't worth it for me. OTOH, I saw Valerian randomly in a typical theater and it was awesome. It's more about getting together with cool people who also like movies.
For certain types of movies, I feel like they need to be viewed in the cinema. Watching Weathering with you and Suzume was the best movie experience I had (And Into and Across the Spider-Verse) Just recently watched Godzilla Minus One in January and the sound it made when it shot out its atomic breath was outstanding.
People who say don't like cinemas because are noisy and people may interrupt them need to check my home or my friends homes, cinema is the only place we can watch a movie in peace.
....this is literally the first I've heard of this, aside from people laughing at jokes I've never had that happen in theaters over here 👀 Which countries are y'all from lads, I wanna know
Yea… This is valid. I’m not saying this from my own personal experience, but I had best friends whose homes were dens of chaos. Sometimes amusing, other times not. Really glad I made those friends though, because it gave me perspectives & insights I otherwise wouldn’t have had.
Before covid, cinema was better. After covid, home is better. I have a 65" TV at home, I can order food, and not be surrounded by people who talk too much or give over-the-top reactions to every little bit of new information. I can pause the movie and go to the bathroom any time I want. If I missed something or didn't hear a line of dialogue, I can just rewind it. I can set the thermostat to any setting I want as some cinemas can get dusty and stuffy with the sheer amount of people inside. I also don't get ripped off with ticket and food prices. The only time I ever go to the cinema nowadays is with the boys, and only when the movie is meme-worthy. For example, we are going to watch Deadpool & Wolverine.
the only reason I watch movies at cinema is that I want to watch it asap the cinema experience are nice and all but at the end of the day it's just a non essential luxury for me
I like cinema experiences, but I don’t agree with cinema experience snobs. Plenty of my favorite movies I never got the chance to see in a theater. Doesn’t mean I like them any less. It almost comes off as “well you didn’t experience this right, so you suck.” I actually lose interest in a movie if someone says you should only watch it in a theater! If I can, I’ll try and check it out in a theater. But sometimes I just can’t make it out to the theater, whether bc of circumstance or disinterest. All love to Connor tho. He’s my favorite snob.
As my dad’s working in the audio field we literally have a better sound system at home then cinema. Still Cinema is just a different experience then home. In cinema it’s about the experience. For example a few days ago I watched SpyXFamily Code White in the cinema. And it was really fun. Like there was this weeb parents with their 8ish daughter sitting next to us all and we had so much fun talking with them later. Or the other time we watched this documentary. And that applies to all kind of movies.
Theatre experiences beat home experiences when youre willing to go to premium screenings(IMAX, Dolby, etc.) however most movies are more than fine at home (anime and superhero movies) My personal take though is i prefer supporting the production by watching at the theatres
My Hero Academia 2 Heroes was my first time watching an anime on the big screen. I like to watch anime movies when they are released because they might take a while to come out in HD or have the dub version.
Im not happy that i choose to watch streaming over the cinema but the cinema is so god damn expensive that i choose streaming but if i had the money i would choose the cinema every time
Personally, I’ve come to see more inconveniences with going to the theater. Tickets and popcorn have greatly risen in prices, you have to hold in your urine or risk missing part of the film, and it’s a crapshoot whether or not the people around you ruin the experience. Watching at home, on the other hand, you have your own food, you can pause and resume whenever you wish, and you can buy a decent sized tv at a reasonable price.
Well ever since the pandemic happen the movie studio negotiate to lessen the window before from 6 months to down to 30 to 60 days after the theatrical release so knowing I can just wait a extra 30 day's to 2 months I would gladly wait I dunno if that's changed again since COVID
I can't afford to watch every film I wanna see in cinema. 20 minute drive to my nearest cinema and $11 minimum per ticket without tax. The cinema is expensive, so I pick very carefully which films I want to support and that I feel are worth that ticket price. By far the best thing about watching a film at home is the accessibility of turning on subtitles. Almost every film I watch at home, I watch with subtitles on.
90% of the time if I'm going to a theater to watch a movie, it's one I'm excited for and don't wanna wait for. If I do end up going, I go to a late screening so there's as few people as possible to fuck up the experience. Other than that, I just use my home theater and get a way better audio visual experience.
university cinemas are the best. idk how common they are elsewhere (basically bootleg cinema in a lecture hall). exactly because the audience doesnt shut up. its like hanging out with the lads except there is a hundred of them, usually slightly drunk. obviously its best for classics you already saw, but thats usually the case for university cinema.
There's some movies that I'd say offer a much better experience at theatres. But I go as early as possible on my days off so I can deal with less people. Edit: I wish they played more classic movies in theatres near me. Recently they were playing the 2000's Spiderman trilogy but I'd kill for Lord of the Rings, 2001, or Alien in theatres.
The best thing I find about going to the cinema, is that it forces you to commit to a film. At home, I often end up pausing too often and going off to do other stuff, it's harder to stay committed.
I rarely go to the Cinema to watch movies and the reason for that is the ticketing. I only watch full movies on a website or on my TV. I've only been to the cinema once to watch the Incredibles 2 and it's fun to watch it with your family but at home, for me personally, it's more comfortable and you don't have to spend a lot of money on buying a ticket
I go to the cinemas around 15-20 times a year (God bless the theater 45 mins from me doing $5 Tuesdays). It’s probably my favorite way to get out of the house for the night.
To me is based on witch movie , like i am not going to pay for some random movie but i was for example on Dune 2 becase i wanted the cinematic experiance this year Last year i watched in cinema GOG volume 3, Spider .--verse ,Openheimer , Barbie wich with 4 movies in cinema in a year is actually kinda many for me , in 22 i was only on 3 and 21 it was only 2 Now i remember i actually watch Demon Slayer compilation movie( i dint pay the ticket ) in a cinema in 2023 meaning it was 5 movies for that year
A lot of my cinema experiences havent been great: people blocking your view, some girl laughing weirdly at everything that wasnt a joke, teenagers throwing popcorn at us for no reason, the only seats left being bad ones where you can barely see, all the food being so expensive now, etc. I dont mind cinemas when everyone there is there to actually watch the movie.
I go to the cinema purely because my ADHD ass can’t watch movies at home where I end up pausing it to go to the toilet and then I spend 20 minutes on my phone
it's just straight up not worth it to got to the movies and deal with sticky floors and high prices and dumb people that won't shut up or kids kicking your seat ect when you can just sit back at home with whatever snacks you want and enjoy the movie with just you and whoever you've personally allowed to watch it with you. like, why go to the movies if it's not an event or something? for the bigger screen? just not worth the trouble.
Man the only differences between my home and the cinema is that theres no icee machine at my house...that and popcorn aint $20 a bucket. That said, I'll go see the new Deadpool on release😅
watch to home i think its best, because if you are a social phobe, it will always be more comfortable at home. And if you go to the cinema only if you want to watch it right now, it is better to go with a group of friends or family
I don't know if this is a hot take but, salted popcorn sucks. It's a big reason I never get popcorn in cinemas anymore in Australia unless I head back to Malaysia. 😁
The only movie I've seen in the theater since the pandemic is Godzilla Minus One. It was great, but given the price and the stupid amount of ads and garbage that I have to put up with, it's not really something I plan on doing too often.
Movie Theatre experience will always be superior. But I only watch movies in Cinemas if the reviews are crazy good, and if I know myself it's gonna be a great movie. John Wick 4 and Avatar 2 I watched in the local cinemas, Oppenheimer and Dune 2 I watched in IMAX and they were fantastic. I regret watching Multiverse of Madness and the latest Thor as both were complete waste of time. I only watch at Cinemas and IMAX depending on the opinions about the movie, if it's great and good, cinema it is, everything else, watched at home.
The movie theater experience is legitimately AWFUL to me because of one killer reason: Sound balancing. Every movie theater I've ever been to has, unanimously, had about half of the scenes be WAY TOO FUCKING LOUD to the point where it causes actual physical pain, as well as just being jarring and uncomfortable. And the other half of the scenes have dialogue that is *way too quiet* so I miss like 20% of the words the characters are saying in what tends to be the most emotionally important or serious "quiet" scenes. When I'm at home, I'm oftentimes fucking around with the volume constantly when I'm watching something, it's just natural for me at this point. Then beyond the volume problems, which are already a dealbreaker for me, you have to deal with going outside, being surrounded by people who are probably going to be noisy, coughing, sneezing, shouting, bumping your chair, whatever the fuck. The only good part of movie theaters is the popcorn (which is horribly overpriced as well). Hell, I have a hard time even finding a good spot to sit that's actually *better* than just watching it on my monitor at home. If you're too close you miss things in your peripheries, and if you're too far then it's hard to see small details. WHY BOTHER WITH ALL THAT SHIT if you can just watch it on your own, controlled, optimized setup. At this point I have absolutely no idea why anyone would ever want to watch something in a theater, besides going out with a group of friends or something like that.
yeah… the people in my region are not respectful or polite in the cinema at all. paying $15 for a ticket to be interupted by rude people feels like a complete waste.
I personally don’t enjoy the cinema experience because when I was watching the live action Beauty and the Beast a bunch of older women were laughing and carrying on and it was so annoying. I don’t mind when it’s theatre where there are not alot of people. I went to see the new Godzilla x Kong in cinemas and it was great because no one talked too loudly in the movie. Thank God👏 I feel that cinema is too expensive as well. I agree with everyone else who has said that.
Meh about movies in theatre. It's fine, I guess, but it doesn't make it any better most of the time. I do have fond memories growing up but it's beem diminishing returns. Only go when friends drag me or have a chance for a free watch.
I recently watched a movie with my family. It was so annoying. They kept getting on their phones. There’s definitely an etiquette at the theatre that makes it more enjoyable.
Anime movies for me apparently don't work in cinema setting. I find the subtitles too mixed in with the white background, and the sound is too low and doesn't amplify the more "epic" OST's, especially in the big climax's of the movies.
There are movies that is more fun to see in cinema especially with great animation like jjk 0, your name and mugen train which I didn’t watch on big screen and I have full of regrets. The Lord of the Rings will view in cinema again and I was so excited since I am too young to watch that in cinema that time.
Movie theaters suck. VASTLY overpriced. Here's a thought. Stop spending 100s of millions on making a movie so that ticket prices go back to being reasonable. And I'd much rather be in a comfortable recliner than some hard cramped theater seat.
The movies in the US aren’t exactly good enough to capture people’s interest enough to watch it in theaters (aside from movies like Dune, across the spider verse, or Oppenheimer). Pretty sure studios are more focused on pushing people towards their streaming service rather than to the theater. Only a small handful of movies feel better to watch in theaters because of that
Home is the best. in cinema there are too much immersion breaking. Buy a big ass TV and good pairs of headphones that has dolby certified or DTS and you will have much better time.
I'm in the watch at home camp. Mainly because I'm just not a big movie-watcher, since 2014 my primary source of entertainment has been RUclips watching vloggers and gamers rather than movies or TV shows. In fact, the last time I visited a movie theater was honestly 9 or 10 yrs ago iirc. But over the last couple years I have started watching more movies here and there on free streaming apps like Roku, Tubi, Pluto, and especially when YT started offering more big-name films free to watch - primarily things I wanted to see when they first premiered several years ago, but didn't have the opportunity.
I only go to the cinema only if there’s a movie I really want to see or if it greatly benefits from it. Like Avatar, Jurassic World, Top Gun, Endgame, Mission Impossible and Dune to name a few. When I go it’s an event I never go casually. Also I need to go with friends or family. I usually only go 2 or 3 times a year. I much prefer streaming
Two movies that are way better in cinema than at home are John wick movies, and Top gun maverick. You dont go to just watch the movies you go to feel them in your seat.
cinemas are THE way to properly experience a film, but the best argument I can make for at home (considering this based in japan) is that movies come out wayyyyyyyyy later than in america. US audiences (through no fault of their own) generally flood public discourse with discussions and memes before others can get a chance. So may as well rent/stream at home
I haven't been to the movie theater since Star Wars Episode III in 2005, and I was only there because my family forced me to come. I had given up on the movie theaters when the internet matured. Nowadays, it's *way* more in favor of watching at home because TV and sound tech has improved a lot. I recently got a new upper mid range 75 inch 4k TV + Dolby Atmos speakers for only like $400 because of I know about bitcoin and clever use of delayed payment plans. And I didn't even mention Covid. You'd be unable to eat anything and have to use the special mask with a straw hole if you want to drink. That sounds unpleasant for a two hour movie. I'll watch at home and eat snacks happily instead.
Overall, I'd say no, they aren't. You have to rely on some person out of sight to project the film correctly or pay for the more premium screening options for one. It can be cheaper to buy a 24 pack of good quality microwave popcorn than it is to get a bucket of popcorn many times. You can't pause, rewind, or fast forward a movie in a theater either. That said, IMAX, 70mm, Dolby Vision 4k laser projector films can absolutely be a higher quality film watching experience, but especially if your talking about the basic package of movie theaters, it's extremely overrated in my opinion.
Cinema always enhances the watch experience to me. The only negative is the occasional dickhead in the audience, but in general it is a great time that is way more immersive than at home.

The only thing that expensive is the food or snack. The tickets itself is really cheap.
A single ticket should be fairly affordable unless you're getting snacks as well...
Honestly I’ll go to the theater if it’s a movie I am excited for or I’m invited to watch it with someone else. Otherwise I’d rather watch at home.

The only thing I can't replicate at home is the lung-compressing bass. I mean, I could, but the neighbours would complain they weren't invited.
And the dimness but yeah mainly the sound
And some movies are better experienced in theaters in my case it was transformers and iron man

Thank God👏
I feel that cinema is too expensive as well.
My cinema has recliners lol it’s incredible
Man idk what theaters you guys go to but my go to is clean, prices are great, and no one is annoying lmao
I appreciate the John Carpenter callout! 😁
Depends on the movie. Some movies you really need to see them in theater.
Can we have another Sydney episode? I wanna see Connor and Sydney yell at eachother again 🎉
I only watch cinemas if it's truly worth my time, considering that it's expensive where I'm from.
I reckon you remember a movie better if you see it in the cinemas
Why would I spend half my life savings to see a movie that’s probably going to suck
I swear to god all this people in the comment section saying why they don't to the cinema are just skill issue.
Sound system at the cinema is killer but I'd rather be at home
I get popcorn at cinemas because that's how cinemas earn money
I prefer the cinema experience but can they please just play old movies and have intermissions? Id be there every week
Because most movies today aren’t worth watching. Looking at you Disney. However, things like Dune, are theater experiences.
Two movies that are way better in cinema than at home are John wick movies, and Top gun maverick. You dont go to just watch the movies you go to feel them in your seat.
0:43 I have 3 cinema's that are no more the 9 to 16 min walk.
cinemas are THE way to properly experience a film, but the best argument I can make for at home (considering this based in japan) is that movies come out wayyyyyyyyy later than in america. US audiences (through no fault of their own) generally flood public discourse with discussions and memes before others can get a chance. So may as well rent/stream at home
Watch Interstellar and you’ll see why
This is the type of question that can ONLY be asked by people who have money, ffs
Nah, skill issue.
I'm from a 3rd world country with minimal paid job and I still can watch movies at the cinema.
I can't watch a film at 7x playspeed at the theatre, so I get extremely restless at the slow motion.
Cinemas are great because it forces you to pay attention and be immersed in what's happening on screen rather than get distracted by outside factors.
