- Although there are a lot of videos on RUclips that say they can show you “how to find your rap voice” or how to “sound better when you rap”…
It seems like nobody has provided a framework online to TEST how to KNOW you have a good rap voice when you’ve been working on it.
Like, how are you supposed to “find your rap voice” or “sound better when you rap” when you don’t even know when and if you’ve already FOUND it or already sound GOOD enough in your rap voice to move on to promoting your music and making money off of this rap thing, and…
Making money in rap is the point, isn’t it?

The key indicator of if somebody is a beginner or amateur level of rapper, when it comes to rap voice, is if they rap in a monotone voice on every track with NO inflection whatsoever.
Sometimes that means the person just RAPS LOUD CONSTANTLY TO TRY TO SOUND CONFIDENT with no inflection changes or vocal dynamics…
But very commonly that means they rap like a dead fish flopping on the sidewalk out of their water tank and every… word… is… spoken in the same… fashion…
And overall it’s just boring.
As someone who has not only been coaching rappers from around the world for almost a decade now on this, RUclips’s most subscribed channel on How To Rap, but also personally having rapped professionally on everything from global tours to ghostwriting…
Looking back on my career, I found that one of the MAIN ways I realized that I had gone from amateur, beginner-level in rap to advanced and even professional grade was:
I Could Instantly Add Inflections To ANY Word When I Rapped
Think about it:
When you think of any rap artist considered at that GOAT level, the greatest of all time household name types…
Every single one is known for some sort of unique vocal inflection point to the point you can LITERALLY impersonate them by just doing ONE of their known “voices” or vocal inflections.
Whether it’s 2Pac’s “hennnesssyyy, enemiessssss”, Eminem’s high pitched “hi kids! Do you like violence” or Kendrick’s alien-“I am a sinner” robot voice…
Every single artist has inflection styles across their career that helps not only give them more creative flexibility, but BRAND their music so you KNOW it’s them on the track.
Let me give you a key tip right here right now to help improve your rap voice using inflection.
Format Your Writing To Fit Your Voice
When you write down your bars or type them out on a phone, use FORMATTING changes in order to force yourself as you rap them out loud to remember to change your vocal inflection.
That could be something as simple as stretching out a word, so if I say the name of this channel in my rap and I want to stretch the last word out, “how to rap”… I would write in my phone as:
HOW TO RAAAAAAP
Or that could be something more complex, such as writing the words in bold I want to say in a more intense voice or making the words in CAPS that I want to YELL, just like you would when reading a text when people use caps.
It makes them look CRAZY like they’re having a meltdown when they write texts in all caps, and you can literally “hear” them yelling through the text in your mind…
So why would you use the same text trick for rap vocal inflection?
Now, if you’re one of those people from outer space that doesn’t write down their bars and just goes in the booth like Jay-Z and Lil’ Wayne, not to worry.
You can also use this technique by visualizing the words in your rap that you’re thinking using colors.
So again, if you want to make sure you use inflection on the word “rap” in the phrase “how to rap”…
Then simply VISUALIZE the word “rap” in red, like:
“How To RAP” (rap in red letters)
And practice the use of visualization to get the same effect.
Point is, your first test in learning how to know if you have a good rap voice is by testing your inflection abilities both with yourself and with others

COMMENT: What would you personally rate your rap voice on a scale of 1-10?
I would say a 7 but needs work I think 😅
Like a 5 or 6. I dont like it yet but i like it in certain parts of some songs that i produce
10 but it didn't come easy put years of experimentation into it.
6 or 7 Ik I struggle with maintaining, but it feels like every time I rap my voice changes or fluctuates. Same thing happens with my everyday voice, but idk why it could happen. I think maybe weather, smoking, diet or who knows 🤷🏾♂️ I have music out if you need an example Drew.
3. Just 8 months in barely started to record though
the problem i got with my rap voice is i cant stick with a consistent accent because im always singing/rapping along to various US artists with different accents, im more of a vocal impersonator than i am comfortable with my own voice
don't let this stop you from making music though. it don't matter if you start out sounding like someone else. make your own songs, record yourself singing them and listen to yourself frequently. you'll slowly know what sounds good from you and what you like. you'll slowly tend to have your own style as you work on your projects.
Write your music with your own unique style and you'll definitely find your voice.
You may have to end up doing a more comedy driven style. You can do all those voices or impersonations to fit more goofy satirical lyrics. Or you can just do a situation where it's more in depth so you can "play characters" arguing or sharing the experience instead of being just you going through it alone. Also I had the same problem a long time ago. I got through it by just closing my eyes and only doing voices and impersonations for every word of every song. I made me get tired of using that extra energy to change and change so often. I used the less funny voices and stuff just to piss myself off enough I didn't want to hear anything but my own voice ever again. Too tired to do voices, to annoyed to do voices. It was easy after doing that for a week.
I give my rap voice an 8. This video is proof your insight can help a rapper at any stage of one’s career.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 cheers DM!

My voice really doesn’t work in a rap context but that’s not gonna stop me from practicing daily.
I’m competing with friends here, I gotta blow them away!
I've been finding my rap voice recently & it is feeling so good. Always learning & improving
Use a recorder to record yourself rapping to your favorite artists and find out which tone sounds best for your voice.... also gets you rapping and practicing .
Pop does have a freeken amazing rap voice. On his freestyle, omg it was amazing
I finally got all the green lights then. I tried to rap on electro, latino, and dancehall beats and I could see the audience nodding their heads in the club, claiming for more, each time I changed my inflexion between each beats transitions. I'm not a goat yet so I would say 8 on 10 now. Thank you for your advices, your 21 days challenge definitely helped me to level up!
Raps loud constantly to try to sound confident!!!!!!!!!!! Man ! Drew, you're a good teacher but also damn right!!!!! lol
Thank you, Jay 3!
I come in at three friends family other people around me they Say I’m way higher than that. I just don’t see it. Lol but I guess the artist is their biggest critic.
My real voice is so shit that starting out im having to use like 3 layers at the same time cause i cant blend the tones yet 😂, tryna sound dark, raspy and loud at the same time without killing my voice or layering is hard
imma rate my rap voice about a five, mixing my vocals is something i hate
Oh as a person I found my voice ASAP, the thing I had to learn was the flow & finding my name
I think most new rappers problems are they use RUclips beats unpaid and that means you have to work with the whole beat as in. If you had that much instruments on at once you will be trying to find a rhythm.
Try finding beat boxing videos and rap to it, use those bars on an actual beat and it will work out perfectly
I have different rap voice like I go from low to deep, then form deep to high and engertic is this a good thing
My rap voice gives me a headache. I can do 4 different voices and each sounds like a different person's voice. I'm trying to use them all based on the topic of the lyrics that I'm writing at the moment but it's still annyoing cause they don't sound like the branches of the same tree, they're like literally totally different
I would give my freestyle rap voice a 7 at this point. This isn't an exaggeration due to the fact that I challenge myself by rapping over pop, rock, dubstep, and even country beats. I also freestyle for hours on end with a good friend of mine. We do it to keep our blades sharp, as iron sharpens iron.
When I was younger I would always tell people mine was also 7. But I grew up and it actually is 7 now. My girl says it's not too big and for sure not too small. So I'm happy now. But to get that....voice was it? Yea to get that voice to a 10 would also be pretty cool.
Them: : “freestyle to this Beethoven” 😂
Hahaha
Run ads on your raps and if the comments say that your rap voice sucks, then you don't have a good one. And if they say "Fix your teeth and get a different career"... well I'm not sure what would possess someone to comment that, but it happens a lot.
I absolutely HATE my voice! I consider myself an amateur to intermediate lyricist, but again I hate my voice.
Fr
Nicki Minaj is the perfect example of this I’ve learned so much from her and your videos 💯💯Wayne Logic Kendrick Cole and B.I.G are some of my other favorite rappers

That’s dope asf
