- Key Wind clocks require a certain adjustment to keep them running properly. If you have a clock that runs then stops within a short period of time, this video may help. Setting the beat is not difficult to do, but does require a good ear and many times, lots of patience.
You're my hero! I have had my mantle clock for 15 years (I've searched endlessly to try to find out what kind of clock it is, who made it, etc. I've had no luck). A couple years ago, my clock stopped working. I tried everything. I saw this video today, and had it working in 20 minutes. Thank you!!
Thank you! I just inherited a mantle clock that stopped ticking a few minutes after starting the pendulum. The shim method helped me determine that the clock is working but I need some adjustments made. It was great to hear it ring for the first time in around 30 years.
I live in a mobile home that had started to tilt over time and didn't think for a minute that it was the cause. Thank you for putting together this video, my Grandfather's grandfather clock once again works!
Thank you SO MUCH! My beautiful antique clock I inherited from my grandparents had been stopped for months, but after watching this video I quickly got it started again.
Thanks!!! You saved me. I moved my New Haven mantle clock, and it stopped ticking, only working for about minute when I started the pendulum. After about two minutes of adjusting the wire, it's now back keeping perfect time. Thanks for your great, easy to understand instructions!!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I finally got my clock working. It belonged to my Great Great Grandfather and hasn't worked properly for decades. It's now ticking away and chiming on the hour :) I uploaded a video. May have to adjust the pendulum to get the speed right but I'm so happy it's working, thanks to you.
I spent over an hour doing this on my Seth Thomas mantel block, I gave up and went to bed. It ran maybe ten minutes, I got at 4 am, due to my cat, so I reached in…in the darkness and gave it another tweak on the crutch, started it and back to bed. Four hours later I woke up and it was running. As an engineer, I’ve worked on satellite systems, radar systems, coms systems as more, I’ll say setting the crutch in this clock was maddening
Thanks for the informative video. My wife for years would move the clock when dusting and it would stop. I then would have to spend time adjusting it again. Don't know what was worse, my wife ignoring my pleas to not move it or the time trying to adjust it. The last time she did it I couldn't get it to restart. Thanks for this video, I now have some new ideas to start it.
Thank You! Got my old Ansonia working again. First time I've seen it work since I was a kid and my Mom had it!
It's not just a dust magnet anymore!!😉
Thank you so much! I was just able to fix my beautiful old Sessions mantel clock with two quarters. Wonderful to hear its "tick tock" again!
I have one of those antique clocks with the Lions heads and feet. It was out of beat and wouldn't stay running. Thanks to your video I was able to fix it and it's working great again! Thank you soooooo much! I'm like a kid on Christmas morning right now!
Thanks bro my great great grandfather's chock was shut for a long 70 years today with yours help the clock started running
This was an excellent video. I learned so much about my antique sessions clock by watching it.
i guess Im pretty off topic but does anybody know a good site to stream newly released movies online ?
@Graham Felipe flixportal :)
@Aden Sylas Thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) Appreciate it!!
@Graham Felipe Happy to help xD
Moved it and it stopped just like you said so Thank you - works again! Two quarters under each front foot and it was happy on the new shelf!
Thanks so much. My Bakelite clock would run for about 30 seconds, then stop. I put a couple of 10 pence pieces under each leg on one side, and it runs marvelously. :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I followed another RUclips video to oil my clock; put it back together and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run for long. This tutorial helped me (I don't have a wire to bend - I have a sort of cog/dial to rotate). So Happy Clocky is working again. Kind Regards
A wonderful short educational video and "I got it" :) thank you :)
This video is very well done and easy to follow. Except of one thing: the music. Why in the world would you add that distracting noise in the background? I actually tried listening to it with one headphone on so as not to have the music distract my concentration to following the directions on the video. So, a friendly suggestion to remove the music for the rest of your followers to appreciate the lesson. If you disagree with me try listening to the video with headphones on....

This is great information! Thank you sir for posting!😀
thankyou so much.helped me fix my 90 yrs old grandfather's clock
Yea! Great to know that your the expert repairing clocks.
thanks to this video my clock is fixed - good work!
Thanks, greatly informative - just a side note, my clock - a Waltham Banjo clock - has a clutch for the adjustment rather than bending the wire - makes it a little easier. Again thanks for the great coverage of the factors affecting the beat.
Very useful and clear instructions thanks.
Very good video on setting a balanced ticking of the clock. I adjusted the rod on my 19th century Ingraham mantle clock. The ticking is now even and runs w/out stopping.
Thank you so much for this video. It helped me to fix my Junghans clock
You're welcome!
Thank you for the video, I learned a lot! I just purchased an old school wall clock - when I was winding it it actually "threw" the key out. Now that side won't hold a wind. Did I break a spring?
Hi there,
I know this is an older video but I wanted to ask this question. I recently purchased a wall clock with a swinging pendulum *so cool* okay, the question & problem.
I can hear it ticking and the pendulum swings. I set the time and it starts working as it should but then I noticed the time has frozen.
Would changing the arms fix this problem?
I was able to fix it by slightly adjusting|bending the arms.
Thanks for those tips!, i will try them. It is frustrating but patience required👍. No music needed for videos if you don't mind me saying. Thanks again. Adrian 🍀.
Nice one mate. Mines a wall clock but by tilting it slightly one way its ticking away happily. Thank you.
When it is out of beat there is a dit-DOT (long...) dit -DOT (long...),as you have demonstrated. When this is the case, is the imbalance on the short or long side, ie, do u need to move the base to create balance toward the dot or the DOT, please?
Some clocks mainly these old Ingraham mantle clocks the pendulium wires are hard to get to when the movement is mounted in the clock. as the movement will have to be removed to set the beat. as in addition to worn bearings if the clock been in service constantly the teeth of the gears where the springs are on start getting worn out then the professional repair of the clock can exceed $600 in all.
Nice narrative, easy to undersand and I fixed my clock!!!!
I have a Gilbert Tambor mantel. Clock is running, in beat but my hands are not moving at all. I can manually advance the minute hand and it strikes as it should on the hour. Any idea? Thanks!
Front to back leveling is not very important if nothing is rubbing and the pendulum leader falls within the loop of the crutch wire. Also it is more advantageous to bend the crutch wire at mid point to set the beat as bending it near the top at the verge can sometimes loosen the brass wire from the hole at the verge. Good video.
My clock was working fine. I pulled the weights up one day and the pendulum stopped a few minutes. I restart it and it does the same thing. Any ideas? Thanks
Good guidance for the layman.
That is a very beautiful clock I wouldn't mind owning one
I had my 1908 Ingraham cleaned and repaired by a professional clock guy. It worked for a week then the pendulum quit swinging. I've leveled it near perfectly with pennies and tried to bend that wire. It got better and swung longer but still stops. The nearest clock guy is a couple states away. Always shipping it places is doing it no good. Also that wire is between the clock mechanism and the front of the cabinet. Altho I took the top off to get at it easier I can't get at it very well. I'm frustrated and at my wits end, i know this clock works as it did perfectly before, but now wont😣
Good clock, good info 👍
great information, thank you.
Really good video, easy to follow 👍
Glad you liked it!
Excellent! Thank you.
Thank you tremendously, this was a big help! Except my clock doesn't have a bendable rod, but rather an adjustable screw (whew) but it was the same basic principle. Mine is a New Haven Tambour № 94
Perfect! Thank You!
I have a clock very similar to yours. Even with the beat set to the best of my ability, the clock will still only run for about thirty seconds with the pendulum on. The clock runs fine (fast, but continuously and well) without the pendulum. Could you help? Thanks
Michael Crowley When was your movement last overhauled or serviced? That could be your problem. If your clock won't continue to run despite what you do, then there is a problem in the movement. Bushings gone bad are usually the main reason, and will require the help of a professional to overhaul and correct the movement.
I was given the clock a few days ago, so I don't know when it was last overhauled or serviced.
old clocks should be serviced and oiled on a two year cycle, most are not! if you are lucky the bushings are good just dirty with dirt and dried oil residue,a good cleaning should help!
Roy,love the video, but the pendulum in your video should be on the top rest so the time can be adjusted properly! I love the old 8 day windup Clocks from the 1920's,keep the videos coming!
But what if one of the weights aint going down? Just one?
The pendulum is already as low at it can go, but my clock is still running 20 minutes fast in 24 hours. What can I do?
pendulum spring too short
I have a seth thomas clock and this video fixed it thankyou
I Have a Seth Thomas as well ., It was out of beat , It finally came to life , Ticking Nice , , Great Video
Trenton Dunsford Nj Seth Thomas
david q Saenz Seth Thomas
Trenton Dunsford how to set it
I'm getting a seth Thomas to and thus is hopefully how it can be fixed
Guess we can just magically push through the face of the clock and get to all the workings. Did you forget to demonstrate how to take the face and hands off. Pretty major point and without that, I can't do much fixing at all.
Have you tried going through the back? That seems to be what the other thousands of people have done.
Can you make a video of the clock striking
My Pendalin is gone on my Clock can I make one
what do i do if i lost the weights and changed a different one
Check on ebay or make your own out of lead or use fishing sinkers etc.
as my ingraham mantle clock in another comment i explained runs for 5 days then stops as im told worn out. its been in my family before i was born but got a date its a ingraham duplex hathor from 1874 a mantle clock bim bam chime. its worn out im told was repaired in the 1930s the 1970s 1990s then 2010s then its worn out i did try the beat then it stops 5 days. i checked that the teeth on both gears for the movement and chime gears where the springs are on are so worn out. may find a donor movement and will have to set the beat on it as the cost $600 to fix it.
Nice video!
can i do the same with a wall clock ????
I can't hear the ticking clock over that music that is playing
Thanks!
Thanks a lot...
Well one of my clocks is a american eagal its on the wall ... it seems too be leved but stops.....i used a leval one way i should use it other ways too see .....
Informative video.
I could have got more out of the video if the music in the background wasn't there ..it was hard to hear the tick tock
Your clock is a seth thomas adamantine clock
this is a seth thomas adamantine clock
That’s right
I don't think background music was a good choice for a tutorial type video. I find it very distracting and when it swells I am having trouble hearing what you're saying.
I made that video back in 2009 using an ancient camera, bad audio, crummy editor, and very little video know-how. I would rather delete it because as far as video quality is concerned, it's all wrong and embarrassing. However, every creator knows that you can have a bad quality video, but as long as the content is good, people will watch, and they do. That old sloppy video still helps several hundred viewers a week.
@@RoyandLily fair enough. It sounds like you've improved your videos a great deal since this one. I did find the parts I could hear helpful. I have an old clock that belonged to my grandparents that I am trying to get working again. It didn't have the winding key so I had to order one and it came in today.
TESTING, TESTING
No shit I just did this to myself sessions Tambour mantel clock the night before I watch this video
You really don't need that background music very distracting
This guy sounds just like John candy 🫡
My god,the sound the clock is making is so important and yet you have stupid music playing over the tiktok of the clock. Some people!!!!!!
