  • How are our educational systems failing our young, black male students? In this engaging and powerful talk, Matthew R. Morris shares his school experiences, both as a student and a teacher, and the lessons he has learned from both with an apt comparison to The Fresh Prince. Both funny and poetic, Morris calls for high schools to become more lax with their explicit rules pertaining to implicit curriculum if they want to reach many of the young black males that the system currently fails. Matthew R. Morris is an educator, writer, speaker, and Anti-Racism activist from Toronto, Ontario. He currently teaches middle school in the Toronto District School Board. He has earned an M.A in Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. His work has been featured in Education Canada, the Toronto Star, and Huffington Post. His blog, www.matthewrmorris.com speaks to aspects of race, culture, and education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Very interesting talk. Don't know if the comparison of HS culture with uni culture is fair. Different levels of accountability between a uni prof and a hs teacher and different levels of maturity between a 14 year old boy and a 19 year old young man, make this an apples and oranges comparison. Having said that, this is the kind of guy we want teaching our kids.

Nice speech but disagree more lax schooling based on kids is the way.... I'd skip half my classes and make jokes anytime I'd show up to disrupt classes... my teachers were awesome and genuine caring with Discipline, Structure and Deadlines more beneficial that making excuses
