- Simon Dupree and the Big Sound were a British psychedelic band formed in 1966 by brothers Derek Shulman (vocals), Phil Shulman (vocals, saxophone, trumpet), and Ray Shulman (guitar, violin, trumpet, vocals); also known for their later prog rock band, Gentle Giant.
They started as The Howling Wolves and then became The Road Runners, playing R&B around the Portsmouth area, home of the Shulman brothers, becoming Simon Dupree and the Big Sound in early 1966. Making up the rest of the group were Peter O'Flaherty (bass guitar) (born 8 May 1944, in Gosport, Hampshire), Eric Hine (keyboards) (born Eric Raymond Lewis Hines, 4 September 1944, in Portsmouth, Hampshire), and Tony Ransley (drums) (born Anthony John Ransley, 17 May 1944, in Portsmouth, Hampshire). Those early group names aside, their repertory was focused a lot more on the songs of Wilson Pickett, Don Covay, and Otis Redding, than on Howlin' Wolf or Bo Diddley. 'Simon Dupree and the Big Sound' came about in the course of their search for a flashy name.
I'm old 😪 wow I was 6 when
This came out 54 years ago
Try to find some happiness in
Ur life it goes by really fast
I was born in 61 so my happiness comes from listening to Gentle Giant vinyl albums from the 70s.
Gentle Giant: one of the best, mind-blowing, unique progressive rock bands! If you haven't heard them, you don't know what you're missing!
I am a Gentle Giant fanatic. Have all of there albums on vinyl from the 70s. The BEST progressive rock bands from the 70s. Unfortunately they are very underrated. Radio stations rarely play their great music.
@@LazyGigolo I love all of them. But maybe The Power and the Glory stands out along with Free Hand. In all honesty I LOVE all of their albums.
Are you saying that this is the band that became gentle giant? Regardless, I’ve always liked gentle giant but I don’t have a clue about the personnel...
@@LazyGigolo TRY THIS ONE:
SIMON DUPREE & THE BIG SOND - KITE (UK 1993)(COMPILATION)
Assolutamente, forse sono stati i più progressivi di tutti
Saw them at the Steering Wheel club in Weymouth, three times, fantastic group.
One of those forgotten pop bands….I wonder if they
made it to the 70’s. Or maybe the changed their style, who knows.
they became prog , i dont like it , i prefer what they done in sixties , they were so happy ,popy , its rare
Que legal ver os três Shulman juntos! Pelo visto temos mais vídeos com Phil enquanto eles eram os Simon do que enquanto ele estava no Gentle Giant...
Great lead vocalist.
Thank you Mike Hugg 😎
First time I have heard of this band! Pretty good!
The became Gentle Giant after ELTON JOHN left this band.
Watch Gentle Giant - what a phenomenal band!!
@@johnsurrey7426 I agree dude ! I LOVE Gentle Giant. Still listen to all of their vinyl albums from the 70s. Great band but very underrated.
@@montygreen6228 Good man! They are grossly underrated. Their musicianship was amazing. I’m a decent keyboard player, but some of Kerry’s stuff is extraordinary.
@@montygreen6228 Yep, great songwriters/arrangers /musicians and a truly fantastic live band. My brother bought Playing the Fool, double LP, and we were both amazed by it. Many years later when we were sorting out a batch of old vinyl records he let me have it - something he's slightly regretted because he re-discovered the band here on RUclips and realized just how awesome they had been! :)
Rip Ray
This song is so tasty, and Austin Powers plays a mean keyboards. 🎹
Okay, how tf these pre-GG recording archives have **way** better audio quality than lots of their GG-era recordings, this was literally during the mid/late 60s😭😭
Yeah this is the highest quality footage of phil shulman playing i have seen.
These guys were awesome. Learned so much from Beat Club
Fantastic! I love this song!
great jazzy phrasing 💙
Went all the way to Germany to perform this dross and not "Kites" their biggest world-wide hit.
This is really strange, seeing my idols of prog playing pop music.
Love this song! Thanks for posting.
DO YOU REMEMBER KITES RECORDED BY THIS TEAM ?
Great song by the pre Gentle Giant brothers Derek, Phil and Ray Shulman.
One of the first records in our house, Christmas 1966/7
Once heard, how could anyone forget it!
Saw this band a few times in the sixties more when they were r&b . Excellent 😎
I like it , nice song
They must have felt better in 1974 now that their hands were free…hands are free…hands are free!
I thought the Who were the first to use the french horn in a rock song! (Tommy 1969).
The Who’s John Entwistle plays the french horn on “Pictures Of Lily” (1967).
There's a French horn on the Beatles' For No One (1966)
Lord!
Two weeks in spain❤❤❤
I always thought this was originally just a Keith Hampshire tune! Great song!
Props to Brother Phil for trying his hardest to make a mellophone look rock 'n roll, but no....
Remember this song from the 60s
best
Does anyone know of any other footage from this concert? or any other dupree/gentle giant rare concert clips?
And what came next...
Elton John on keyboards? ;-)
Excelente grupo ingles, aqui mas mod.Me suenan a Manfred Mann de la epoca?
Romance.
This sounds good for the sound produced in the sixties however I'll take Keith Hampshire's version over any other.
Good band, top musicians, but they didn't really get strong enough songs to go the next step, although Kites was a good pop song. Much better once they evolved into Gentle Giant and pushed their musical talents.
Austin Powers on keyboards
If he's Austin Powers what does that make you Jamie? Dave Stewart? You both had the same long hair in the seventies and both kicked ass on keys & composing 🎼
this could have been an excellent northern-soul cover. The Shulmans dissolved this group because of the other guy's poor musicianship, and here you can see why. No groove!
NOTHING HERE....BUT CRAPPY MUSIC.
Go to hear your "music" somewhere else.
This is a cover of a little-known Manfred Mann song called 'Each and Every Day', which they left on the album 'AS IS' in 1966. It's composed by singer Mike D'Abo.
The original title is Daytime Nighttime, written by Mike Hugg alone. We (The Shamrocks, Sweden) did the first recording as far as I remember.
The same moves as he did in the mighty giant love it❤❤❤
