- Former prosecutor Mark Lindquist sheds light on the legal implications. While there might not be criminal liability for the parents, they could face civil responsibility under negligent entrustment if they own the car and loaned it to their son.

He’s 18, he’s an adult and should be held accountable.
🙄 18 year olds have no adult rights
@@terencestewart9199Really??? I got drafted by the Army at age 18 (Vietnam).
@@terencestewart9199Yes they do. He committed an adult crime, so he will be tried as an adult.
@xs650abear6 being drafted is not a right. The only adult right 18 year olds have is the right to vote😆

3rd totalled car in 11 months. First degree murder.
First degree murder? Do you even know how laws work? It seems you’re judging by emotions
I understand your emotional response to this tragedy, but the law wouldn't apply to first degree murder. Unfortunately, the laws we have are generally very lax.
@@SiIhou Won't really matter what he is charged with. Rich daddy will be able to afford the lawyers to get him off. If daddy can afford for Jr to total off 3 cars, he can afford a good lawyer to get him off. Isn't that how the law works? Only for the rich who can afford the lawyers. This is why spoiled rich kids never learn accountability. Hmmm, who would be an example of that???

Science and common sense. They bought him the car, he lives with them, he’s still a dependent. They raised him to behave like that. Also are you stupid? Why the hell are the crazy peddles likes yourself trying to blame someone else? It’s you that teaches this world to blame others and no lessons get learned.
He should be in jail for murder, he used the car as a weapon. He had no regard for the law cause he was going nearly 3 times the legal limit and driving without regard for others on the road after he previously crashed 2 other vehicles.
His parents are accessories because they kept buying him the vehicles and allowed him to keep driving, so they obviously didn't care who he maimed or killed with his stupidity behind the wheel.
Worse, he is still alive after 3 innocent lives were taken in what would have been horrific for them until they died and unspeakable grief for the families left behind especially if he and his parents get away with this.

My house is several hundred feet away from this crash. I was driving home when I noticed the police closed off the road to the crash. I agree with all the comments saying the driver should be held responsible.
HOWEVER, THIS ISN'T THE 1ST INCIDENT.
My neighbors (a husband and wife) were just trying to make a turn into our neighborhood to go home. Their car was hit by a driver speeding down this main road killing my neighbors and themselves in the process. My father went out to the sidewalk after hearing the crash from our backyard.
A few days later, there was another car collision. There were no casualties from this 2nd incident that i know of.
The problem is the main road is a very long stretch road going straight with no traffic lights for over a mile. So many people are always racing down this road. Even late at night, I can hear the sound of cars purposefully racing down this road from the engine sound.
I don't know why people feel the need to race down any road without thinking about over people's safety. Even on the freeway, I've seen so many people driving recklessly everyday I drive to work downtown. I'm really getting sick of aggressive drivers.
I am so sorry about your neighbors.
Sounds like the city is ignoring the problem, not enforcing speed limits and not putting in either speed bumps or more lights. I hope y'all stay safe. And for safety I hope that y'all have concrete barriers in front of your home.
@@reginarobinson2080 honestly, there has been a cop car hiding by AutoZone to catch speedsters late at night but haven't seen them lately

If he was 16 or 17 the parents should have been accountable. The Parents should have raised a better kid. What he did is just reckless with no care given. & Took 4 lives within a instant.
If my kids drove like this, no way they get a car.
@@whodidwhat32does not mean the parents should be held criminally responsible for something someone else did . I'm not sure what country you grew up in
He is 18. He is legally an adult.
As an adult, he would have been unable to get any kind of insurance with a record like his. If his parents, knowing how reckless he was, enabled him to have a car with insurance so he could continue driving, I think they should face some culpability. This sad outcome was extremely predictable.
No legal accountability and punishment. Great message from WA state
I'm not saying the parents are completely blameless, here, but no state in this country could hold the parents of an 18 year old legally responsible for this. Chase Jones is an adult in the eyes of the law.
Even if he *was* on his parents insurance policy, which we don't know for sure, they still couldn't be held legally responsible.
Why do you believe the parents are responsible for the actions of an adult son?
Life in prison. Charge the parents for sure. Yes he is 18 but they keep getting the cars and covering for him. If you can't get them legally get the civilly. A jury would hold them accountable.
exactly!
100% They can labeled as accomplices for what happened.
The state kept giving him driving privileges so why not jail the people allowing him to drive legally?
@@annabellelee4535 Sadly they don't arrest / charge those people. But the family could certainly sue and attempt to change regulations around it.
@@annabellelee4535 He may still waiting on trial dates from the previous crashes as slow as the Courts move anymore....
His parents gave him the WEAPON, and excused his behavior again and again.
This is what happens when people with money aren't held to the same standards as those without. Honestly, they're DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for not reigning in their child. 4 people were killed because of THEIR negligence. They should be charged as if they were in the car, egging their son on.
I agree in this case. The repeated speeding and crashes has me as a parent wanting charges filed. He lives at home and isn’t emancipated. They knowingly and repeatedly gave him a 5000 pound gun to operate irresponsibly that led to 4 deaths. The first parent charged in this country from his kid stealing a gun from the home and shooting up his school was inn Marysville.
The 18yo needs to face some serious consequences--like PRISON. The parents bear some responsibility too.
Read what you said again. He is 18. His license wasn’t suspended. And unless he told them he was gong out to kill someone with his car out of malice, there would be no way they are responsible. Why are the likes of you allowed to speak? You always want to blame someone else, and the ADULTS that do this never learn a damn lesson!!
@@BrianSchaffer Listen Mr. Wokedy Woke. After the first crash involving SPEEDING, my parents would have told me I wasn't mature enough to drive and they wouldn't have bought me another car. I would have been walking wherever I went. And BTW, I'm allowed to speak just like you b/c this is a free country.
I believe here in PA, if you're caught going so much over the speed limit, they do take your license. Not sure how much more over, but 112 in a 40, your license would be gone. They need to post his picture.
One would think that after he totaled his FIRST car, that his parents would say; "thats it too bad, buy YOURSELF another one." No, they bought him a "reward his bad behavior car" and look at what happened. And there were all those warning signs in the way of tickets before this happened?(smh).
You are right!
Explain that to BrianSchaffer
Many people are responsible. The driver, the parents and the cops. He was involved in two previous accidents within a year involving speed and the cops let him off. The parents were there at prior accidents and knew their son had problems with following the speed limit and didn't seem to care. They probably paid for his cars and wanted to be his friend rather than his parents. The kid should have been made to go to traffic school and had his license revoked. All of these factors combined to a woman and three children killed, several injured and lives destroyed just because a punk kid felt that the laws didn't apply to him, his stupid parents who didn't care and the cops who need to be tougher on drivers who speed and cause accidents. Yes, the parents are as much at fault as their son.
Clearly he’s irresponsible
Clearly he is also a selfish idiot that cannot drive.
If the parents bought him a second and third car and paid his legal fees for the prior wrecks, then they knew he was a danger, and yes they are responsible. The law enforcement/prosecutors should also have some liability.
Many insurance companies are now requiring drivers under the age of 21 to have a driving tracker installed in any car they drive. This allows the insurance company to monitor the teens driving habits and therefore the risk to the insurance company. The good news is, safe teen drivers (or their parents) will be rewarded by saving money on their insurance premiums using this device. The devices tracks the vehicles speed, breaking, acceleration, trip distance, time of day, use of seatbelt, and several other things.
Yeah they either require it or they offer it as an incentive to reduce insurance prices and promote safer driving habits
He's 18 people, an adult, ergo, responsible for his own decisions.
He’s 18. He’s not a kid. Parents are not liable.
He is when he's wyte. When ya blk you're an adult at 14 in the legal system.
Agree that as parents they are not responsible due to him being 18 but as the owners of the car and the fact that they knew he had previously been involved in speeding accidents in their car they are 100% liable for once again allowing him access to their vehicle knowing he was a danger.
They are if they own it.
Who'd name is the car registered in?
Well if it is their car and their insurance then they are going to be liable for some thing. They aren't going to be going to jail or anything tho.
He is legally an adult. I don’t think parents are liable.
I imagine that the parents have him as a secondary driver on their insurance policy so they would be liable. This kid shouldn't be driving, he has no regard for anyone's safety. His parents buy him cars under their name. They clearly are okay with him doing whatever he wants.
Technically he’s over 18 and if the parents did not give him a car he could have rented one? Borrowed one from a friend? Can’t really hold parents responsible legally but trust me I hear what you’re saying and what morally should happen for the damage he caused to so many but legally it all falls on the driver.

@@geraldgreauxjr.7106
Most rental places won’t go near a driver unless they are 25
Back in the day I was able to rent a car at 22 but there’s was an extra fee. The next time I tried to rent a car I think I was 24 and that same company told me they didn’t do that anymore… but that was about 20 yrs ago, so maybe my ages are off
I think the guy in the video is right… if he was on his parents’ insurance then their insurance would have to handle the claim, but that doesn’t mean that the family would get much; THAT depends on the policy coverage limits
The insurance would tell the family what the coverage limits for that particular policy are for that sort of incident and the family could choose to accept that in lieu of litigation, or they could try to go after the driver in court and argue that his parents facilitated their son’s actions, even knowing how dangerous he was based on 2 prior totaled vehicles in less than 2 years
Giving it some gas on a 40MPH straightaway would be 50… MAYBE 60 if there’s no sign of *~ ANY ~* traffic whatsoever and even then you slow down to the speed limit as you approach intersections… then you can go back to being an idiot on the next clear straightaway
112 with traffic is beyond criminal/felony speeding even on the freeway… but to do so in a 40 mph zone is suicidal
I can only hope that the family in that minivan didn’t even have time to process what was happening before their deaths…

His parents should definitely carry some responsibility for knowingly providing him cars despite his history of extreme recklessness
Washington state, the only place where responsibility never lands on the individual who actually does the deed.
I didn't push my girls to get their driver's license. I waited for them to say " Mom I'm ready". Some kids are not responsible enough at young ages to be on the road. Parents of these kids know who they are through driving with them!
He wasn't a young child, he is an adult. He makes his own decisions and bears the responsibility for the consequences of his actions.

These horrible wrecks keep happening with people driving at ridiculous speeds. When are people gonna learn you that speed limits are posted for a gd reason? If he’s 18, then he’s responsible imho. Young people need to stop treating driving with such callous disregard. Do they not show those horrific driver’s ed films we all had to watch? For day after, I didn’t even WANT to drive. @@jodylancaster8706I5 is an interstate that is a road where he was going 112 way different types of pavement
@@jodylancaster8706 I avoid it at all cost if I can.
He is a legal adult
Whose name is the car in?
They could maybe be negligent for letting a reckless driver use their vehicle??
Are there no laws for driver retaining there?! In my state, a driver under 24 with 2 'moving violations' must complete an Operator Retraining Program or their license is suspended. I think they also have to take it if they're speeding way over the limit at any age; they definitely do after being convicted of driving over 75mph in a highway work zone once.
Affluenza defense again?? The parents are not responsible for his actions.
Why they are trying to blame the parents when they should blame the system?! First, yes, now a days at young age it’s possible to make lots of money so he could or not be at the parents insurance, second he is 18 and already had a huge acidente before and lots of fines so why he hadn’t his drive license suspended? Because everything is just about the money, someone can violate the traffic laws everyday, just pay and you are good to go! No matter the horrible or irresponsible driver you are!
Yes!!! Parents should be held accountable!!!! 😢
As he is 18 he is criminally liable for his own actions. According to the law he will be trialed and sentenced accordingly. The parents unless explicitly covered up his previous actions. The judge will not care as the 18 year old is competent enough to stand trial on his own. The video itself says unless it’s the parents insurance policy. Financially will be the only way parents get affected that is if they don’t get dropped from the policy.
Hold parents and him accountable
The driver shouldn't be absolved of any blame but the parents absolutely need to be held to some account.
He crashed *3 times* due to speeding, one of these times being just earlier this year, and they just gave him another car, just like that.
If I crashed a car when I was 18, specifically because of speeding, there's no way in the world I'd be allowed to just get a replacement or even touch a car for a long time after.
It's amazing that Mr Chase is living the life of Riley @ home while the victim's families are mourning the loss of their loved ones. What a disgrace !!
Why do you assume he had insurance?
Because if it's a new car a dealership won't let you take it off the lot without proof of coverage.
Yes, I think the boys parents also should be charged with something, because they kept bailing them out!!
Why wouldn’t you take the keys away from him if he lives at home ? It almost sounds as if he was deliberate in his driving as he did not brake. Perhaps a suicide attempt
Give him 10 years in prison for each life he cost.
Normally I would say the parents should not be held accountable, but they enabled him. They are culpable too. Fine them 15% of their net worth per life their son took because they continued to support his dangerous driving habits. Taking away their house will leave them nothing to buy his next car with.
On to prison buddy
No the parents should NOT be held responsible! What is wrong with people now days? Sue crazy AMERICA!! Young or not, he is an adult, and should behave as one!
Parents bought the car which is the 3rd one he's totalled this year. Yes they are definitely responsible.
@@motionsick no they are not, that is like you being held responsible for farting because your mouth ate beans!! No it is on the young adult!
That father is strong beyond measure. My heart goes out to this family.
From what I understand a 13 yo in Washington State is considered totally capable of deciding to get life altering elective surgery, get an abortion, refuse drug rehab and mental health treatment. At 16 they are allowed to drive, consent to sex, gain employment. At 18 they can vote, join the military and enter into a legally binding contract. So it seems that at 18 the driver is solely responsible for decisions he made while operating a vehicle. This is a case of an 18 yo not having assets or money the lawyers can go after.
It is truly sad a family is now gone from this earth but it is the drivers fault and nobody else's.
A precedent has been set holding parents accountable. Both parents who supplied a rifle to their son, who used it in a mass shooting were convicted of manslaughter. This sets the groundwork for holding parents accountable for the actions of their children.
