No modifier, pure chaos.
How to cast a 10th level spell:
Step 1: Find a generous DM.
@Gol.d Tori wish is limited as a 9th level spells. By definition it can’t effect 10th or higher.
Or
Step 1:DM a game
In my homebrew setting, I actually still allow casting of 10+ lvl spells. It's just incredibly difficult (very hard to learn, need multiple people, insane component cost, chance of failure, etc...) Makes for a very interesting game and also is a great tool for the BBEGs to use (great basis for a campaign).
So basically like this video
No different
The way he explained it as a ‘workaround’ kept making me think

I mean, how many times was it Wizards that killed Mystra? Wizards bought TSR (and therefore D&D) in 1997. So before 3rd, but surely at least one of those kills wasn't their fault!
I had actually figured this out through various different wiki's and ruled for my own campaign that because she was so fresh in activity, she was less savvy at repairing the weave after so much damage had been done to it through the spellplague and wild magic that transformed entire continents. Which allowed those old enough to remember, or have stolen such knowledge, to cast these spells nearly freely. Which was perfect for my Arch-lich BBEG.
it needs actual magical power wisdom is not the only compoment
@@lorekeeper685 yes I'm aware. It's why I devised my own way to start casting out this magic. Fashioned it as a perversion of how High Elves casted their version of Epic Magic. Forcing people to become liches to essentially be batteries for this BBEG.
IIRC, archliches are the "good" liches. And yes, I think it's kind of dumb, especially since they become liches the same way as the evil ones. There's literally no difference except alignment.
Anyway, I believe I've heard that all of this lore involving Mystra and 10th level spells only applies to one specific D&D setting, so nothing is actually stopping you from using 10th level spells normally in other settings.
@Greywander, he is how it works. Orcus either created or perverted the ritual to create a lich in such a way that it would slowly drive the mage into villainy. Archliches are liches, in everyway, except that they have overcome that limitation (and I believe they don't even have to eat souls).
Now there are also "Lesser Liches" which is like a Lich EXCEPT that they are only immune to death by aging... They are otherwise perfectly mortal.
@@Greywander87 You're thinking of Baelnorn liches, and they're very different from a normal lich, they're made through elven high magic, or divine ritual not the normal process.

stupid question: could a genius wizard use a simulacrum as their helper for casting a 10th level spell?
No, only original casters no simulacrums or constructs could do that.
Probably not- Simulacrum are supposed to be both much weaker than the original and not fully real people.
To be honest you might need to use a simulacrum, as the wizards have to be 'perfectly in sync'
Only level 20 casters can cast a 10th level spell. The first time a pair tries this it fails and they both lose a level (90% chance to lose the level technically i guess). Simulacrum can't gain levels. So you'd have to argue that once you get to level 20 again and recast simulacrum it's still the same "pair".
@@wasfas1977 Hmm you're right
Mystra: *breaths*
WotC: "And I took that personally"
I managed to cast a tenth level spell by creating an undead computer
Ah, a fellow buyer of Deep Rot(tm)
@arnold jayeola It's a series of /tg/ threads that step-by-step describes how to create a functioning computer using undead, and the campaign idea around it.
@Antonio Romero I mean, if a skeleton is intelligent enough to identify threats and practice swordsmanship, it can probably decode simple semaphores.
So if Mystra was the one who set these limitations, and each god is restricted to their Crystal Sphere, does that mean 10th+ level spells are able to be cast in other settings?
Iron Smith "If a God only has power in their domain, can they have that power outside of it?" You answered your own question. What's possible in other spheres is dependent on that sphere's Gods and other laws of being.
Well, kinda. I remember reading that the gods "exist" between the spheres, such that for example a cleric might need to establish temporary power through a god's "Ally god" if their god had no power there. So yes if the god isn't there, but that doesn't mean they don't have influence.
@Lamodrick Foster I'm coming for you Azmodeus. Your time is over!
They can and the proof is in the existence of Abeir. It's depicted as being "in" the same crystal sphere as Toril, but it exists in a pocket dimension that is entirely cut off from the weave, yet it still has magic and spell casters. The magic just works differently than it does on worlds with a connection to the weave. So if there is still magic on Abeir, a world cut off from the typical source that's controlled by Mystra, there's no reason to believe the weaves rules would apply to an Abeir caster either.
@Lamodrick Foster And what about if a wizard used proctiv's move mountain in Baator and moved the floating mountain back to Faerun, would the spell remain active in that case?
Your explanations on why things are the way they are in dnd and how that came to be are so detailed that I almost forgot these things didn't actually happen.
What happened to the other ways of casting 10th level spells? I thought the elves had high elven magic that also allowed them to do so, even after the ban.
@Lamodrick Foster Interesting. But Correllon's control of magic still has to go through the weave, does it not? Wouldn't Mystra still have some say in that, or is that where she draws the line? I might also be mistaken, and there simply is just another form of magic that isn't a part of the weave that I am unaware of.
@@teknonick3374 That other persons answer might be right, but you have to consider that there are, in fact, other ways to use magic. Look at the world of Abeir, which existed/exists in a pocket dimension. It's cut off from the weave entirely, but still has magic in various forms that operates by different rules.
They follow all the rules with their high magic:
1. Divine permission: check.
2. Not the the high magic spells of the past: they've their own kind of magic, so yeah.
3. Together: what do you think an entire tribe of elfs? Enough?
4 bound: it's why they do it.
It is absolutely fine to do a bit of Meta, you’re doing principle lore stuff, but a little mechanics in each episode is nice.
Yeah, especially if the lore is directly linked to said mechanics in a way that separating the two leaves vagueness/confusion

Mystra sets a ton of rules on casting 10th+ level spells
1:12 "This is why people are sure such power will never be achieved again"
Wizards/Clerics/Druids: *laughs in Epic Spellcasting*
Something to ask: From what I remember of the lore Midnight didn't get revived as herself but she was revived using the divine peace that was left of Mystra... so the new Midnight/Mystra is technically a new reincarnation of old Mystra.
. . . Do you have the slightest idea, how little that narrows it down
That doesn't help at all.
"no views", this is a first for me
When you are finished with this spell franchise which by the way is Amazing I would love to see more on space and spell jammers thank you so much for all the hard work you have put in to D&D lore And can't wait for more
Sounds to me like this could be the start of an interesting campaign: The Return Of Netheril, where the heroes help to create a NEW magic empire! But will Mystra stay silent? With the old evils that brought the Netherese low return? Will they even survive its success?!
Side note: if the use of 10th level spells needs WISDOM, then what would the amount have to be? By level 20, any wizard worthy of the title should have an Intelligence of 20 NATURALLY to be able to even UNDERSTAND what the 10th level spell even IS, but I think to cast it the’ll need between 18 and 20 Wisdom. Only less - to a minimum of 16 - if the spell itself has “plot armor,” and is necessary for the campaign.
MrMaradok Perhaps it is higher than 20 in both fields, requiring those who seek it to rely on magical boosts from relics they find in their travels.
I do believe that at least one floating city of the Netharim has returned to Faerûn, of course, the Netharim aren't exactly humans anymore, but rather Shades, changed by the magic of the Shadowfell.

10th level casting...when Mystra really starts about thinking to demonitize a wizard.
Do a video on the Shadow Weave. The Shadow Weave would avoid Mystra's detection, in exchange for making a pact with Shar, or becoming a worshiper of Shar and permanently losing a part of your soul. So before the spell plague, you would be able to make a deal with Shar to cast a 10th level spell. But 10th level spells still wouldn't be able to be strong enough to do anything that could avoid the gods and let you cast 10th level spells indefinitely.

I just want to say I do appreciate you churning these out really quickly. I know these are not that easy to make.
This recent set of videos has given me a lot of inspiration for the campaign I'm writing. So thank you for making such great videos!
Here's a tip that might help some wizards cast 10th level spells for personal reasons without getting feebleminded by the gods in their attempts. Go to sigil. As long as you don't do anything to the city or cast any teleportation or planescaping spells, the Lady of Pain won't really stop you. And the gods can't go to sigil either.
go anywhere that isn't the forgotten realms
The Goddess who comes back at the end of the plague is the restoration of Mystra(the one between Mystryl and Midnight). At the end of the last Novel, Storm calls her Mother and Elminster is fond to have her back
This last few episodes were so GOOD, I love the concept of these 10th level spells and just the general history of Mistra in general.
Love the dramatic finish, great video :)
I would love to see a full lore video on the Time of Troubles
I would opt to try to cast a 10th level spell with the Shadow Weave instead. Shar would LOVE to boast that the Shadow Weave was more powerful than the Spell Weave. The act alone would cause many arcane users to start using the Shadow Weave instead which would super power Shar. This would almost certainly cause her to grant you the powers of a Chosen, Exarch, or even be granted a portion of her increased power to become a Demigod.
that sounds like someone will get greedy, try to kill and take over Shar and Ao will put everyone on time-out again
This is a beastly video essay, I learned a lot. I don't think the topic could be explained much more succintly. Pretty sure Rhexx is just Oghma tbh
Great video as always! I didn't know how recent your other ones on magic were so I had no hope of this coming out any time soon. I'd be really interested in a video on the other methods to cast higher magic, like the elf sacrifice that you mentioned a while ago or epic magic and how that works or how you would justify it still existing.
sorry i was about to write something meaningful but i must go play dnd now:)
I have home brewed most of my campaigns so that if the players put time gold they can create spells higher than 9th level but it will always end in a die roll of a d100. I still use Mistras ban on high magic but do to time she has gotten lax with her lock down on that magic do to her belief that mortals have just given up on 10th lv and higher spells. Witch has led to some epic spell that have dramatically change the face of my semi home brew faerun.
I do not use Gold, player must use their spell caster's XP to cast higher power spells. In 3.5e a arcane spell cast had to burn off / pay for the Wish spell with 5,000 XP as written in the player's hand book.
Your videos are really cool I like the perspective you give! I'm glad I stumbled upon your series :-)
I was just searching for this right before work, glad I got something good to watch on break
Can you please make a video on how the elves made their epic magic after the ban?
Meanwhile, in my local D&D group (We're Brazilian and i am the only one in the group with a good understanding of english, so i can't send them this video)... My friend is DMing a adventure about Elminster, apparently, going bat-shit crazy and working together with a multiplanar circus from Eberron(Where the player characters of the DM live) to find and collect all powerfull Magic items in Faerun, and beyond, so he can use their magic to create a rune so he can cast a 13th level spell for whatever reason.
That might seem like a somewhat bad story by itself, but it's united with the power of the weeb soul of the DM. So, with that combination, the players are the nominally weakest of a group of 100 parties helping in this task, under the lead of a Monk named Natsu, with a doll called Happy by his side, qnd together they do nothing but watch while our lvl 1 party fights against lvl 3 parties (the DM makes every humanoid npc have a player character sheet) and almost die every battle

Keep up the great work and ignore the haters!
I just found a core to my magic based campaign. Thank you so much for posting this :D
So this is the elven breed of Magic that you mentioned in an earlier level
No. IIRC, elves came up with a way for many casters working together to create mythals, which are basically huge areas (like a whole forest) where there's a certain spell effect. For example, a mythal might allow everyone in the area to cast remove curse once per day. I'm pretty sure Waterdeep has a mythal that acts as a forbiddance spell against dragons. This is especially powerful when you consider that in earlier editions this damage was typeless and therefore couldn't be resisted or immune. I don't 100% remember how they did it, but mythals were their thing.
@@charlessaintpe8574 If I remember right a bunch of high level mages had to sacrifice their lives to accomplish it hence why it went out of style level 20 wizards are rare and having to kill multiple of them for a single spell even a big one just isn't worth it

This is honestly really interesting, I could see a scenario where the players have to help a couple of wizards make the necessary preparations to cast a 10th level spell in order to defeat a really dangerous villain.
I love it when you provide your in-game META critique. As a DM, it gives me wonderful ideas for my games, and occurrences that I could include for some nice flavor. As well as being basically by the book, so my rules lawyer player cannot even attribute a more than a slight argument against it. (3.5e)
Guys what about going on a spelljamer to space beyond the mystra territory and cast 10 lvl or higher spell will IT work ?
its much easier than 100 years of trainig and a sacrafice what do you think?
First: spelljammer isn't the forgotten realms.
Second: you can't get help from a deity, so you have to do it yourself or with a group.
Third: you probably want to effect a certain area, which is hard in spelljammer space, because you can't really hit anything in not in the same room.
Fourth: yeah, you're probably right and it would.
Fifth: If you're going to use a spelljammer ship anyway, just go to a place with a more generous goddess of magic.
Sixth: you're right and it makes for an interesting plot point with some high magic smugglers guild and the surrounding intrigues.
What are "levels" in the forgotten realms anyway? like what does determine how high of a level a certain spell is?
Actually, is hard to explain, but i'll try.
A level of one spell is determined by the reshearch of the wizard that is creating the spell
Depending on the school of the spell that is being created( like illusion, necromancy, adjuration, etc.) the wizard measures the level of the spell according to its effectiveness, how hard is to cast this spell and many other things.
I don't know if i'm 100% correct but this is what a think
It kind of would make sense in game as well as mechanically. Wizards would certainly have convened at some point and debated the relative power of some spells compared to others. Over time they were able to rank the spells from cantrips to 9th level. Everything stronger than that would be 10th level or above, but those can’t be cast.
@@Aplesedjr except they can, but you have to be buddy-buddy with Mystra and also having a mindlink with an equally-powerful mage, both of whom have high wisdom as well as intelligence, and even then the first attempt would cost you a class lvl, and any attempt would also do so
Complexity
Its about 1 page of gyphs and diagrams per level so a 1st level spell is 1 page of glyphs to study while a 6th level spell is 6 pages of glyphs
Thanks for all these lore vids. I never played dnd myself, but I do enjoy the rich world and how lots of fantasy genre bases from it. Would be awesome to listen ur ver of dnd's view of death, undead, lich, etc. Again, thanks for the vids!
Great video , again you prove yourself as a " Lore Master Sage "
Would it be possible, through time travel or through some magic battery, to use the weave from the Netheril Age to bypass the rules?
Any work around you can imagine, a God has thought of it before you and prevented it. Unless of course your DM likes to fill in plot holes.
If you can perform time travel of this scale, you don't need 10th level spells.
@@maximefourton7155 Completely inaccurate.
Funny that you mention that because in the book where you get all this lore about Netheril, there's actually a campaign and it assumes you time travel to get back there.

Hypothetically, couldn't you just leave Wildspace, the crystal sphere of Toril, and cast the spell outside of every god's domain?
I was thinking about this. But it would require either finding a world with a weave similar to Mystryl's weave (or weaker), or being able to deal with raw magic in it's entirety, as in a world with no weave, wich in both cases that happened in Toril it spelled disaster.
Still I'm using this possibility for my new campaign, I want to make in a new crystal sphere, whose high pantheon is a magocracy and they rule over worlds for fun, games and amusements (and most of the "high pantheon" is evil)
cant cast shit if theres no magic weave
Considering that the last universal reset that effected the D&D multiverse was the switch from 2e->3(.5)e, would be safe to assume that magic in it's default state works like it did in 3.5. The Phlogiston sea doesn't seem to hinder magic (except for a few extraplanar spells) so if you were an interprising 21+ wizard, cast away.
@@GunarBastos I'll tell you a secret: Not every campaign has to be set in the official D&D multiverse. Just do whatever you and your players want.
@@RoberttheWise Yeah... I kind of go way too hard on my creative side, to the point that I've began to build over 20 different worlds from scratch, and at some point I would face myself with such big of a job to get it perfect that I would just abandon it, be it because it took too long to complete and I don't have a group, or because the cost/benefit would not payoff.
Limiting myself to some boundaries helps me to identify and define most of these aspects, and work around the sheer number of possibilities that a full new multiverse would mean, and thus, I get work done.
Oh my god! So good! so much inspiration! I can't get enough!!!
-Im gonna be the greatest wizzard ever!
(-1 lvl)
-Ouch!
-Harry!
I have had nvr been a believer of such things. But after I had a break , and then I wanted to reunite with my ex ,I tried love spells. Honestly speaking was completely speechless with the spiritual power of Dr ikenga. Everything happened as he said to me
Nice read and digging into those old books
Lol spell casting is a gift like every other rare gift you know. It ain't for everybody. I mean, its funny how people come on youtube and search for ways to become spell casters themselves lol. Well, I'm not the smartest either because I did that before until I got introduced to someone who actually helped me solve my marital issues. Yeah, that's what mine was about, he does everything. Honestly such a cool way to allow the DM's more control.
I have always been interested in the magic of D&D. In my games I try to find lore and gather information about it, but have never played a wizard, outside of DMing. Inspired by your videos, I decided to take a wizard class for the first time, and will be starting up soon in a long journey to restore the age of magic, and 10th level spells =D I love your content, thank you for creating. I look forward to the video on space and spelljammers.
This is exciting! I did not consider the events of the Time of Troubles at all! This is quite mind blowing!
Beautiful video, you are amazing my dude!
I love that there are canon reasons for changes between editions and a chronological order for things happening.
All of a sudden a literally new and fresh Mistral with not so great control of the weave allows for strange possibilities. All you need is one clever soul who isnt stupid.
So, Mystra is just the DnD deific equivalent to the Sean Bean meme.
Also, thank you so much for making these Videos. I originally watched these when they were released, and am now revisiting them in order to plan out a possible way for how the campaign I currently master could go.
A very useful video would be describing the events and lore leading up to Horde of The Dragon Queen so players have a good sense on what they're walking into. It would actually be helpful to both DM and player alike as the DM needs one last handout and players can make more campaign appropriate characters.
This video directly goes into the campaign I'm building.
As always a great video. So many more to get too.
Thank you for all your work! Because of you, I am now able to legitimize my campaign!
Thank you heaps! I had a undead wizard who was left alone at the end of the campaign for 30 years, when she came back for a Camo she was still at 13th level...now I know why...she's been meddling in 10th level spellcasting and level drained herself over and over again trying to make it work. :)
Man, you're so prolific recently, i feel spoiled...i like it.
