The first to start playing in the early 60’s on the low drum on 2 side of clave was Johnny Dandy Rodriguez. I asked Dandy in 2017, and Jimmy Delgado mentioned it in the 90’s when I was his student. Tommy Lopez, conguero from Eddie Palmieri’s la Perfecta did, listen to el sonido nuevo. On Ismael Rivera’s album De Colores the conguero does the same.
Very cool! Those things are always hard to trace back, it's hard to say whether it had never been done before that seeing that there is a vast amount of un-recorded and recorded Cuban music from before 1960. But that Dandy (one of my favorite percussionists of all time) began to use it deliberately and popularize it regardless of the origin or inspiration, is a super interesting anecdote, thanks for sharing!
Favorite Van Van Song to play along to, go!
