    Great tutorial, just one thing.
    Never prefill your oil filter. You can verry easy put contaminants in the Clean side of the filter.
    Just put on the filter en run the engine for 10 sec to fill it. then check yot oillevel and adjust accordingly.

    Hey Captain. Love the videos. Its awesome to see the amount of hours you are getting out of these outboards. Was wondering if it would be possible for you to lay out a maintenance schedule that you do for these. Maybe you follow the schedule in the manual but would like to know what you may be doing if different to get the hours your getting. Thanks. Keep up the great vids bud they are greatly appreciated and you do a great job doing it.

    You make excellent videos, Capt. Sean! You've made servicing my motor cost effective. Maybe you can help. My boat sat idle for 6mos in the driveway and decided to fire it up and get it ready for summer (I have a 2003 Honda 200 outboard). Ran fine for about 6.5min., then the oil pressure alarm went off (never did that in the whole 16 years I've owned it). Turned off motor, checked dipstick and it indicated full, with motor level. Let it sit for about 5min., started it up again, ran fine and then alarm went off at 2.5min. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

    • @captainsean4851
      @captainsean4851  5 лет назад

      I have never had this issue but then again I run mine almost daily. If only sound or only a light then there are other procedures to check the ignition display. If both are going off it is most likely the engine. From there your best hope is the oil filter. That's your best hope but least likely. You'd have to run an oil pressure test and if that's it then figure out if it's a switch, leak, pump, passage, or strainer. And that's a much more complex set of procedures than I can reply to in a comment

    Great Video. What’s size prop is that 4 blade. Do you know if it will fit a Tohatsu 250.

    • @captainsean4851
      @captainsean4851  4 года назад

      Our props are SS 14-1/4 x 17 x R(or L depending on engine) so basically 17" diameter. We chose stainless because of the load we push (24 people) for less flex. For most boats I think you can use aluminum and be fine, plus if you hit something it ruins your prop and not as much gears in your lower unit. Tohatsu should have different hubs so I'd talk to a dealer or some guys here use FL company prop gods I've heard with a lot of variations.

    Hey Captain Sean, can you talk a little about flushing these motors? I keep mine in the water -- should i use muffs with the motor tilted up and running at idle or should i use the hose attachment with the motor off? Does the hose attachment bypass the thermostats?

    • @wtfiam524
      @wtfiam524 6 лет назад

      also, what do you think about saltaway on the reg?

    • @captainsean4851
      @captainsean4851  6 лет назад

      I would use the hose attachment with the motor off. That's what the manual says and I can't remember if it was on forums or the manual where I read the water gets all the places salt water does when you have the motor off and do that reverse flush. If you tilted the motors up too high with the motors out I'd be worried about the oil pump possibly failing or having issues. Also may want to scrub the zincs fairly often and consider changing the ones in the exhaust manifold more often than most.

    • @th3smurf692
      @th3smurf692 4 года назад

      Dont run your engine when its tilted up!! Because the oil pressure will be too low, as the engine is designed to run vertically. Probably going to give you a warning straight away when you turn it on! As for saltaway I would just use it once a year just before winterizing the boat. No need to use it everytime you flush

    Captain Sean, thank you for the video!! I am new to boats and am considering a purchase of bass boat with a honda 225 outboard (BF225A). The previous owner states that the oil was recently changed and after compression test a mechanic stated that the motor was mechanically sound. We took the boat for a test ride and everything appeared/sounded to function as it should. Upon taking the boat out of the water and trimming the motor down to drain excess water I noticed after approximately 5 minutes that there was a 2" diameter puddle of a milky white substance. Is this an indicator of water in the oil (or somewhere water shouldn't be), or is this typical after a recent oil change? Also, I live in a humid climate, maybe this is a result of those conditions? I appreciate any advise you have and hope that you find my comment! Thank you for your time!!

    • @captainsean4851
      @captainsean4851  4 года назад +1

      Milky fluids of any kind are not a good sign. I see tiny milk streaks of water in the oil during changes (forums I've seen say that's normal condensation), but a puddle with a consistent color like that on this motor means you have water and oil mixing. Where the oil is coming from is everything. If it's got a yellow/honey tint to it then I'd guess motor oil, or lower unit if the leak is coming out there. Pink milk would be trim fluid. Can you get a picture of where you can best see the oil coming from?

    • @edmundr4134
      @edmundr4134 4 года назад

      @@captainsean4851 I do not currently have a picture. I was offered a second test ride and would have to see if I can replicate the issue. I will attempt to do that and see if I can notice where the oil is coming from. Could it possibly be an issue of excess oil overflowing and mixing with water outside of mechanical housing (flowing out of compartment and mixing with water draining off out of motor)? Or is it turning the milky color because it is being mixed inside of the mechanical compartment? Again, thank you very much for the reply!

    • @captainsean4851
      @captainsean4851  4 года назад

      @@edmundr4134 It can get milky outside of the engine. I have seen an issue with a gasket on the motor mount deteriorating and causing oil leakage. If you trim up the motor after running it, if it's the gasket I'm thinking of, you will see milky oil dripping out from the area where the motor and lower unit meet. If it is leaking from that area you're looking at probably $4K-$5K bill from the dealership. Also, check the oil after you run, if it's milky that's a bad sign and I'd avoid buying it. Maybe see if you can spot any leaks while you have the cover off.

    • @edmundr4134
      @edmundr4134 4 года назад +1

      @@captainsean4851 thank you so much! The current owner states that he did not have any further leakage... obviously not sure if that's the complete truth... I think it will be best if I have a shop look it over one more time. Thanks again!!!

    Good video, did your oil level increase between services?

    • @captainsean4851
      @captainsean4851  4 года назад

      That has never happened to me. I have heard that comes from a piston(s) having gasoline blow by the ring due to a bad spark plug/ignition coil. Usually, it's oil burning in the cylinder but I've heard it CAN go the other way and "add" oil to your supply. Maybe search some threads online.

      I know you're right, in my head, and also, that's how I tighten my oil filter on my car. Honda manual says hand tight then use wrench to get to 9ft/lbs (12Nm). It used to say gasket first touches metal then 3/4 turn. I could never get close to 3/4 turn without filter wrench (which is not a torque wrench and I'm not about to pay for an adapter). I think hard hand tight would be just fine, but this has worked for me long enough know it's part of our procedure.
