I swear dotted quarter notes are the bane of my existence. I’m a flute player going on almost three years, who will mostly likely be switching instruments this was also really great review for me! Thank you for the vid!
Glad I could help. Best of luck on switching instruments!
This has been very helpful. I currently play trombone and I am trying to learn tuba because my band does not have one
Same but I’m a trumpet player
Me too that's insane cause I used to play trombone but moved to tuba cause there is only 3 tuba players and 2 are failing
sameee
My exact situation lol
Same lmao
I have been playing the tuba for about 6 months now so I am just watching this to see how accurate this video is
Hope it helps!
Thank you so much!
I’ve been a saxophone player for over 10 years and am trying to teach myself tuba
Great! I hope (believe) you'll LOVE the tuba! The general principles of wind instrument music are the same, and the lower notes are BEAUTIFUL!!
Terrific way to introduce tuba playing and music in general to true beginners!
rhd1974 Thanks! I appreciate that.
@@tubazimm I play tuba too and enjoyed your videos here and also on FB!
As a baritone that might be switching to tuba next semester I’m learning just in case i don’t
Thanks for the huge support on this video! I am currently building an online Tuba/euph/trombone studio. If you wanna work one on one or in small groups I will always try to take the time to fit someone in!
bro I'm in band and this is a life saver 🙏
Glad to hear it!
Hello tubazimm. I comment on everyone post all the time (sometimes) and I am very happy you showed me this video. I am malakai and I am now in marching band. I joined marching band around August and I am thrilled to be in the union high school marching family but there is a reason why I joined. 2 years ago (I believe) I met Joshua at school when I was in 7th grade. We were in the same grade and I got to meet him because of Nicholas Sturgill. Joshua was in the marching band and he really wanted me to join. I honestly didn't wanted to join because I'm general I didn't like music. But it was a mistake because in my life I only tried 4-5 things in life. Joshua was impressed because of my typing and coding intelligence and honestly I was impressed of how he played on the sousaphone (aka) the tuba. When he wanted to join marching band, he was scared. He thought that the teachers would hurt him, embarrassed him and more on. I told him "Get a hold of yourself. I promise you that everything will be fine. I will give you assistance if I need to. Please let me know how it goes. If you want me to go, I will. The next day he went to the marching band room by his self (very proud of him for doing that) and talked to the band teacher. We were screaming because he got accepted into it. We got into contact with each other and talked every single day and there wasn't a day when we didn't talk at all. I was super happy about myself and for him as well. We were considered the #1 best friend in the school and high school. We done things no one ever probably did. We done things that I was super proud of and for him as well. And we gone further than we ever expected. He trusted me more than his friends, even his family. And I almost felt the same as I trusted him almost more than my dad. Now the day we last talked. August 13, 2022. Joshua and us were playing Fortnite and it was getting late. So Joshua's last words to me were "see you buddy" and I said "see you at school Joshua!" The next day August 14 2022 he died in a house fire. I was shattered. I couldn't even function or walk in that moment. It felt like everything came down to me and I really couldn't even think at all no more. The next day. I went to school, about to have a breakdown right in the class until the counselor saw what was happening. The counselor took me to the office and we sat there until the end of the day at school. I told the counselor that even though I didn't like music. Did I really not like music? I told the counselor that I wanted to join marching band to honor my friend. The counselor I assumed forgot which is fine because sometimes that happens to my school. The next day I told the other counselor about everything with me and Joshua and without even bringing up the marching band part, she wanted to called my parents and get me to join in marching band. I went to the marching band room in middle school and I was greeted by the amazing teacher Kimberly Sturgill. Ms. Sturgill informed me about everything in marching band and was expecting to see me come around to talk about it. She was super happy and offered something "if you think this will be better for you. Do you wanna go with the sousaphone that Joshua played to honor him even more?" I said yes. For the first time in my life. I was greeted with a handshake I was back in class and not even 5 minutes I was greeted with my new schedule and was ready for my new exploratory. I took the bus "thanks to some of my friends" and after getting out of the bus. I experience like another world. I got into the band room and my eyes were going all over the place and was not used to seeing all of instruments, music notes and so on. There a kid from high school greeted me and brong me into Ms Sturgills room. I was informed about a lot of things about marching band and how things work. I was just seated and wa greeted by a lot of new people. A few days now and I was in the marching stage. Steps, counting, and posture was very tuff. I was never teached or never heard about these things so it was going to be a while for me. After 2 months, I was considered "decent marcher" I was very happy about it and I march pretty great according to the director and band assistances. I haven't learned music yet but next year I will get to experience it to the fullest and learn music from there. I had a fun time in marching band and with my friends and I never experienced any of sports, events, or anything. I want to say thank you for getting me started for what resource I need because it really helped me. Thank you tubazimm and I hope to see you soon!
I’m so sorry about your friend. You lost someone very special and there is often no greater pain than losing someone you care about. It is good that you have found a place to belong in band. You remind me of when I found the band room. It felt like somewhere I could call home and I would spend hours there practicing, hanging out, and I never wanted to leave. No matter what was going on in life band was always a welcome escape. The people I met in my musical journey have remained close and dear to my heart no matter where life takes me. I’m sure Joshua would be proud of you. I applaud your decision to honor him in this way. Please reach out and keep me updated on your progress I would love to see how you progress.
Let me know how I can contact you if those don't work. Sorry I am 14 and I don't know any better lol
Thanks for this. I am switching from violin to tuba an am going to have trouble switching the clefs. This has been helpful for learning the basics
This has been so helpful. Just subscribed. I’m new to tuba but loving learning to play my Eb tuba I just got
Dude thanks so much this helped so much
Super happy to hear it!
I just started band half way through the season, i wanted drums but my directors gave me tuba,, i need to learn within 4 days to preform for my school's game
That is a pretty quick turnaround. Did you play anything before?
@@tubazimm The only thing I've played before tuba was piano... I don't know if I'll be able to participate with the rest of the band 😟
@@no-cz7js You got it! I say give it a shot and keep playing tuba after.
I’m in a similar situation haha
My band teacher asked me to learn tuba over summer because the only tuba player graduated this year, but I know NOTHING about brass instruments. And to make matters worse I’m skipping Band 10 and going straight to 20/30 whilst simultaneously playing with our symphonic and concert bands. I DON’T KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE BLOODY INSTRUMENT
PLEASE I you have any tips for a C-Tuba I would be very grateful I would like to succeed
This is very helpful thanks
Thank you it helped a lot!
Love how I am watching this with a giant tuba on my lab lmao
Nice I'm trying tuba to
Leave to see it! Welcome to the tuba family!
I just learned more tuba stuff in 15 mins then I did in the last 2yrs
Thats awesome! Glad I could help!
Excellent!
Thanks!
This is my instrument for band
That is awesome! Welcome to the tuba gang!
Thanks very much my teacher recommended this video
That is awesome! Happy this could help!
thank you for this video. im looking for tips how to play and blow the different tones, like Bb and Eb has the same fingering. i started to play tuba last week, so i have too many questions beginning "how to". im quite familiar with music therory and reading f-clef.
Glad I could help! If you ever have questions or are interested in lessons feel free to reach out. My contact info is on my website.
Thank you! I’m leaning tuba because I broke my finger on my left hand so I can’t play the saxophone!
Sorry about your hand! But, welcome to the tuba family!
There once was a tutor of toot, who tutored two tooters to toot. Said the two to the tutor, is it better to toot, or to tutor two tooters to toot?
Toot tuba toot
if you want to practice on the song pace, I recommend a metronome.
A common misunderstanding: reaching high notes is NOT by pressing the lips together and forcing the note out. First, blow air out of your mouth, second, increase the speed of the air, third, gently make the hole in your mouth slower, increase air speed if necessary
Let me know what you are working on in a comment!
I started to learn music (treble clef ) originally on a cornet last August so 12 months ago and moved to Eb bass tuba in the October. But haven't been able to play/practice with the band since lockdown started some 13 weeks ago. I've think my solo playing as come on leaps and bounds since then I practice an average of 2 hours a day. Someday days go better then others.
My current favourite tunes to play are: the flower duet, speak softly love and somewhere.
@@MILKYBAR1969 That is super awesome! Loving seeing new people come to play the tuba. I am with you. I also really miss making music with people. We will get on the other side of this! The first notes back with a band will be full of joy!
Doubling on e flat tuba
@@lethalweeaboo2239 Love it! What made you pick Eb?
@@tubazimm I play euphonium. E flat sits a little higher so it is a little easier than BB flat or CC for me. I figure if it's a smaller tenor tuba so I can use it for chamber or solo. I would be good for band parts and if I ever wanted to play brassband it is a good for that too. And honestly it is not to hard to get used to the fingering.
Thank you I just got my tuba it's heavy lol
Nice! I remember my first day like it was yesterday. You get used to it for sure.
@@tubazimm thanks I'm 10 and so I'm the only one who picked tuba and I'm in band so pretty much I got a case and it's hard to carry it
That is exactly how started! Crazy, I’m still carrying that case now.
@@tubazimm sadly I don't own the tuba like music stores around me don't rent tuba so I have one from my school and I'm in 5th so only 5 months
Someday maybe. Music is more about the journey than where you start.
will this work for the marching tuba?
Yes. I would just add: 1. memorize your music (If it is required) 2. Focus on creating a really open sound at a high volume to help support the band! Marching bands typically push a lot more sound than band & orchestra!
@@tubazimm hahah thank you, this was when joining band so I could play and march tuba and I knew nothing about it. Now I'm in my schools wind ensemble 🤭
I'm not finding the link for the notes and fingering that you had mentioned a link for.
It should be the one under Bb tuba fingering chart in the description. It automatically downloads a pdf instead of taking you to a new tab.
Here is the link to copy-paste if that doesn't work.

I’m currently playing saxophone for jazz and we have no Tubas playing for jazz band so I’m going to be the only one playing Tuba for jazz
Thx 🙏 it really helped
Matthew Nava So happy to hear! Happy I could help! Welcome to the tuba gang!
Hey why is the tuba important my band director told us to look this up
The tuba is the base of the band. Just like you can’t have a rock band without a bass. You can’t have a band without a tuba. We provide all the low notes that the rest of the band plays on top of. That is pretty important if you ask me.
@@tubazimm Yeah, good point. I’ve also never understood why composers like to give bass clarient and tuba the parts, I know they’re bass instruments but they sound different
Hey! I’m starting out on Tuba and just wanted to know is there anything special to low notes in embouchure or air?
Trash Bag Trash Bag Low notes take a lot of air. Early on I thought of the air kinda like blowing fog into a mirror. Lots of air with open sound hoah sound. The embouchure is really relaxed and the air is doing most of the work. Hope this helps!
@@tubazimm Thank you so much! I just tried it out and WOW! Definitely worked thank you
That is awesome! Glad I could help!
Im in 6th grade and want to know how to play
@@edithhernandez638 Thats awesome! Are started around the same time.

It looks like you watched the whole video!
Until you started counting while snapping, I thought you were snapping a backbeat.
I do like a good backbeat!
