    • @tom_something
      @tom_something 3 года назад +6

      There might be some sneak-a-beans (a fun new word for "shenanigans" that I invented just now) involved in making this video. I think they might have buried a tomato slice, dug it up, and then planted a seed. There's a jump at 1:03 where the switch might have happened. If this were a cooking video, Ann Reardon would have already clocked that jump. There are a few reasons why I don't think they just buried a tomato slice containing multiple seeds and got a tomato plant out of it.
      -As you mentioned, there are several seeds. Odds are, more than one of them were viable.
      -Ants. Flies. These are things that come a-huntin' when you leave out some sugary food for a few days. Even if you bury it, they'll find it. Ants are easier to control, but flies are dang-near inevitable. They're so hard to stop from "happening", that scientists believed for a long time that flies just snapped into existence around food sources. Literally. As in, maggots didn't come from flies. Maggots just arise from food and then become flies. "Spontaneous generation". It was super hot back in the day. So what I'm saying is, even if you have a space with no flies in it, yes you do. Leave out some food, and there will be maggots. Because of flies you didn't know you had in your home.
      -Abscisic acid. How does a tomato seed know that it needs to start growing instead of continuing to be a seed? You put it in dirt. But wait, you can also just put it in water. It'll rot in a couple weeks, but it start growing if you put the seed in water. Well, hang on. The inside of a tomato is mostly water, right? It's very wet in there. So why don't the seeds grow when they're still inside the fruit? The fruit contains abscisic acid, and the seeds generally know not to start becoming plants if there's a significant amount of abscisic acid hanging around. In nature, animals eat the fruit, including the seeds, and then they poop out the seeds. In this process, the presence of abscisic acid around the seeds is greatly reduced. Now, it's possible that a seed surrounded by fruit matter will eventually germinate as the surrounding water in the soil helps to dilute the abscisic acid. But I'd have to imagine that this would result in delayed germination. There would be at least a couple days of _nothing_ before the big reveal.

    My son and I did this as an 'experiment' with several slices. Most had several plants germinate, one slice only had a single seed germinate. My guess, for those wondering why only one plant is shown, is either only a single seed germinated or the others were 'thinned out' (removed). When starting seeds this way be prepared to do a good deal of thinning and transplanting 😀 All-in-all it is a fun way to start your plants and a great activity for kids to get involved with.

      Just... Tomatoes bought in march/april are generally frozen and from bad species, it's simply stupid and anti-ecological to buy some. Better to make his own seeds in august/september with good ones, and wait for March. (And make in grow by May is stupid in the north of 45° latitude in Europe, 40 in East side of continents)

    ten seeds went in and only one seed came up. is that because there is a 90 percent failure rate ? or did the main seed sabatage the others somehow ? I didnt even see a second stem break the surface.
    why ?
    bad luck ?
    not enough nutrition in such a small space ?
    sabotage ?

      I don't think the seeds won't germinate because of competition. In my case I dropped like 10 to 15 and all of them ended up growing, it can be the substrate though

      Is this a store bought tomato or homegrown? Store bought vegetables are flashed with radiation which greatly reduces germination rate.

    • @SeedOfUnderstanding
      @SeedOfUnderstanding 2 года назад

      @@matthollander6539 It does depend on who is supplying the produce. Right now where I live the ground is frozen so the stores bring in produce from where it isn't frozen. To prevent infestation and rot they will radiate them.
      I also found out that drying the seeds out greatly increases germination. Letting them fully dry for 30-60 days is recommended.
