£150 - $1300... Stand up paddleboards can vary so much in price. In this video we look into why this is and hopefully help you decide which price point SUP is right for you, so you can spend your money wisely and get on the right board.
The jump from iSUP to a hard board is eye-watering... I'm on a Gladiator Pro Touring board and rate it highly but have now got my eye on the SiC Atlantis at £3000+... That's 6 times the price of my iSUP.
It's a step jump in price for sure. The performance benefits are noticeable though. Maybe look at the second hand market?
Also, look at the boards the hire and SUP lesson schools use. Those boards are normally robust and bombproof and will last, which is why the schools etc use them.
Great tip!
Fanatic and starboard then, based on where I live.
@@theseb1979 very much depends on where you live. Oshea, Red Paddle & Starboard around me
@@juliemarriott7395 , indeed.
I have a hard Fanatic f2 surf sup, an old starboard k15 and a McConks Go-wild isup. All very different boards for different purposes.. the f2& k15 are old now and the k15 is heavy but they are still superb and despite their age they still hold their own. The McConks is awesome though.. real quality with a carbon saving heritage. Just love it on rivers lakes, canals and sea.. not a board make that is well known by i took a chance and its really good, definitely worth the money. Blagged a go on a Quroc recently... direct sale only... seemed to be really good holding a lineand tracks easily and seemingly good quality... very tempted at around £700 .
Thanks for your feedback on your gear Hans. Great to hear you are loving your McConks. Thanks Reuben
After months of geek research and comparisons between zillions of tests and datas (at one point I found myself studying the biology of balsa wood and paulownia ), for my shop I took Starboard for the inflatable and Sunova for the hard boards. Hope the customers will appreciate. If not, I will have a fantastic quiver and an angry wife.
Sounds like you have done your research. Both those brands are great, I just wish we could hold of the Sunova's easier! Happy SUPing Reuben
These times.. shopping for a race board: Don’t get to try it, put down a deposit, and hope to get your new board by the start of spring!
Yeah interesting times
Cheap inflatable SUP's are glued PVC and the glue will fail and fall apart in 5-7 years, good quality are welded PVC and will not fail at the seams (15-20 years lifespan).
I struggle to believe that even the premium manufacturers offer a product that will endure 15/20 years regular use, simply not credible.
I think this is something we need to try and look into a lot more. It's very hard to work out how long these inflatable paddleboard should be lasting whether they are glued or not glued. Thanks for the comments Reuben
@@SUPboardermag it would be great to hear from people that have had huge hours of use from their SUP and have found them really hard wearing. Keep up the awesome work with the vids🤟
good idea !
Hi! I really like your job. Could you please help me and advice what I should consider. I am a woman 173cm tall, 71kg weight, beginner but I am getting on quite well. I like exploring more than racing, but when I am going back I dont want to be the slowest. What would you suggest in budget around 350- 700 pounds . Thanks
Hi. Thanks for the question. Lots to consider for which board you are after. Assuming you would prefer iSUP or hard board? Hard board might be difficult to get under £700.
For an iSUP, we'd suggest going for something with a bit of length for glide and speed - say around 12'6 or between 12-13ft. For your size, opt for something around the 29-31" wide mark. If paddling in bumpy water, go for the wider board at 31", or if paddling in calmer water, you can go narrower to 29"ish.
Look at the Starboard iGO Zen 12'6 x 30" Paddleboard 2022, the Shark SUP 12’6/30/5 Touring, or the Gladiator PRO 12’6 LT.
Hope this helps! Thanks, Beau
Just saw you comment on another video. If you are still beginner and want something that is going to be stable, opt for 31 or 32" width. Going under 30" might not be the best move as it will feel unstable. If you're not planning super long expeditions, look for boards around the 11'6 length.
This is without a doubt your best video yet. If only people coming into SUP had to watch this.
I spent the extra on a Starboard iSUP and don’t regret it at all, but I have seen some cracking boards out on the water at lower price points, but I’ve also seen some shocking boards too!
Wicked , nice to hear it.
In which category do you put Aquamarina and Gong Isup (I know you haven't tested but you tested the ifoil). I mean quality wise.
Thank you!
Hey , We feel AQ are at a good price point for board finish, look , range available and weight. The only negative this year is they are not as stiff as some other brands. Gong, going off of ifoil. I would say that they are a overall good. But I have no idea about stiffness of the bigger iSUPS.
If you are a SUPboarder Pro member I have done a video speaking about iSUP brands and our feedback back about them on there. I talk about 27 brands, talk about pros and cons to each. supboardermag.com/2021/10/23/feedback-on-isup-brands-in-2021-from-you-and-us/ Thanks Reuben
Companies are desperately trying to sell boards that are not in stock. Most are sitting in containers ships for months off the coast. If you think its expensive now just wait.
Yes we shall see.
Hi guys! I would also add that where you plan to paddle is also highly important, meaning DON’T buy a cheap inflatable board and go out in open waters!!! Will take more stress vs paddling on a lake and the risk is way to high
good point

Great video as usual. Keep up the good work ✌️
Thanks, will do!
In what category would you place irocker and the premium version blackfin?
Mine exploded and I can’t contact any customer support
This is helpful feedback. Hopefully you get it sorted soon.
I would put Irocker and Blackfin in the Direct sell at moderate price point. (Like Bluefin aswell). They have more people on the phone and via email to answer questions. And have distributors allocated across many countries around the world. A brand that has grown a-lot over the last few years. You get a-lot of board for the money. But are not as well finished and as light as boards that cost more! Any help? Thanks Reuben
@@pretty-ricky If it was a blackfin, the 2021 ones are on a recall list. The replacement boards for that line are being issued next year. There is a recall section of the website. Hope it works out. I have 2 irockers I love but my friend has a blackfin that she had to cut the finbox out and send in a pic to prove she is no longer using the recalled board in order to get on a replacement list.
What category do you put Bluefin iSup in ?

Disappointingly not quite my experience. Having recently bought a mid level Starboard board I found the board quality excellent but a lot of other elements lacking.
The bag received with it was poorly sewn to the extent that the zip was coming away along a four inch length. Some weeks later I am still waiting for a replacement having originally (via the vendor) been offered the cost of repair.
The printing on the paddle and fin were poor quality which isn't a big issue but certainly not premium look and feel.
Also, the leash it came with seems pretty poor, very lightweight, straight so not really suitable for rivers but marked "not for use in waves" so I'm not sure what it is for. It is the same design that came with my friend's £200 board from Amazon.
Overall a pretty poor "premium" experience.
Honestly the overall experience with my £300 zray board was better and a third the price.
Thanks for your comment Phil. Good to hear about your experience.
Of course there will be products that slip through Quality control even at the top end prices point. Be these are generally few and far between. In a pre covid market that bag would of been swapped asap but I do know that ALL brands are struggling to get hold of gear from factories a the moment. But like you said that shouldn't happen in the first place!
Thanks again,
its important you all tell us what your gear is like. So we can get as much overall information as possible to help others.
Thanks Reuben
@@SUPboardermag to be honest, none of it (except perhaps the odd leash design which feels like cheapness under a layer of greenwash) are broader problems. More than anything it is about polish and a perception of service. I should add that the replacement bag is on its way but it feels like it has been more of a battle (more for the vendor than me) than it should have been. Just not a premium experience. Shame really as it's a brilliant board.
hmm ... thanks for the feedback Phil, sorry did you say what country you are in? Its good for us to know where the problems are happening. thanks Reuben
@@SUPboardermag hi, I didn't. UK though. A month in and the old bag was picked up last week. Still no replacement bag but possibly tomorrow.
Ok Phil, Thanks for letting me know. We don't hear many bad things about the UK Starboard distributor. But this year has been hard on everyone, from paddlers to factories. But hope its all getting sorted now, Happy paddling Reuben
