Agree weathering or making the trains look aged is what makes it more authentic looking

Stunning. I'm not a railway modeller myself but I get the attraction to it. It's so sophisticated these days. I only had a transformer with a big red dial to go forward and backwards on my childhood Triang layout.

Best I could manage was a Lone Star push-along, which I still have sixty years later! I often think that I'd like to take up serious railway modelling but at this level of sophistication I wouldn't know where to start. Join a club, perhaps?

Full marks for originality. This is an unusual choice of subject avoiding the twee scenes depicting the England which was traded for Beeching and the petrol engine! I remember having to travel to University on a filthy train in those BR days. I am not sure I like to be reminded! Thanks for uploading.

I like how, and especially seen in photographs, you have attained a “Pastel” type shade to everything. There’s a particular charm about it because nothing shouts out as being brash and outstanding on its own. The whole layout has a very uniform pastel shade and this makes it quite unique. Fabulous. All the best.

Visited a show during 2018 which this layout was part of during the early afternoon as things were winding down, the owners were kind enough to allow me to operate one or two locomotives movements from shed to fiddle yard and back again with a different loco it was so much fun especially with the sound being so realistic, well to my ears at least.

Like many modern layouts, nice scenery, but no comprehension of real life operational methods or the real railway rules covering operation & shunting. Ground level 2 aspect signals of the type seen are incorrect. You either need an electrically operated Southern disc with illuminating lamp, or a more modern 3 position shunt with red/white (stop) or two whites at 45 degrees (proceed with caution). Indeed if there are no passenger "Running Lines", then running signals are themselves unnecessary. Only ground level shunt signals at the exit from the Yard area, towards the "Running lines" are needed - see below.
Running Line = Lines with any type of train including loaded passenger trains, branch or mainline. Which must have full signalling if loaded passenger trains are to travel along it. All facing points must have Facing Point Locks.
Other lines = Include sidings; Yards; Depots and anything not classed as a running line. Only shunt signals normally required at the exit from such lines onto "Running lines".
Loaded passenger trains - CANNOT accept shunt signals as permission to move !
Loaded passenger trains - if forced to make unusual moves, such as reversing over a crossover not fitted with a Facing Point Lock, then those points have to be manually "Clipped & Padlocked" and a Signalman has to hand flag the train over the points.
Shunt signals should exhibit only red & whites or if a headshunt is involved yellow & white, or the mechanical equivalent. They DO NOT indicate that the line ahead is clear, which is why passenger trains are forbidden to accept them.
Normal Running signals use red, yellows & Greens. Which indicate the state of the line ahead and give permission of at least one section as clear (to the next signal plus overlap.) Under TRACK CIRCUIT BLOCK RULES.
Semaphore signals are different. They are normally working under ABSOLUTE BLOCK rules on multi-track passenger lines. The Distant is the most important signal. If clear it is indicating that ALL stop signals ahead throughout that signalbox area are also ALL showing clear.
If the Distant is at caution it means that ONE or more of the stop signals ahead controlled by that signalbox is at DANGER. So the Distant must be positioned far enough in advance of the first stop signal to allow enough braking distance from the maximum line speed allowed. A 90mph line requires 1 mile between Distant and Home signal, and the distant would have to be electrically operated, as expansion and contraction in a mechanical wire of 1 mile length could allow incorrect movement of the semaphore arm.
The above is just a little of the operational rules BR train drivers had to be fully conversant with !!!
