This History For Humans story-lecture teaches Boss William Tweed, his rise at Tammany Hall, how he embodied Gilded Age corruption and then how Thomas Nast's cartoons took him down! Covering the Whiskey Ring and the Credit Mobilier scandal, political machines, patronage, the assassination of President Garfield, this episodes gives an overview of Gilded Age corruption but focuses primarily on the rise and fall of William Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall in New York City. It ends with the amazing story of how Thomas Nast's cartoons took down Tweed, his arrest, escape to Spain, and capture. Gosh, history is great!
Like all History For Humans episodes, this teaches students in a way they understand and actually learn- through story and with visual supports for diverse learners.
For teachers and homeschool parents, I have resources that go with this lesson that include interactive notesheets, a quick quiz, and an extension lesson that has students analyze a Thomas Nast cartoon and then create their own using Nast's techniques for powerful symbolism and imagery!
There are answer keys for everything.
I do hope you enjoy it.

Would you prefer rat poison in your meat, child labor, women being the political equals to children, and an 80-hour work week? 🤔

@@historyforhumans905 Yeah, sure, I prefer rape and plunder... Can we now talk like grown ups? My point is that I trust the free market far above the political process, simply because we humans are far better/smarter consumers than voters.

@@historyforhumans905 The Jungle documented only extreme cases that were definitely not the norm. Women were only banned from voting in Democrat-controlled states. Republican states allowed women to vote. Democrats voted against women's universal suffrage nearly every single year for 50 years. The Tweed gang were Democrats. The 80-hour work week was only relegated to very low skill labor, primarily immigrants which were brought in by Democrats only for votes and cheap labor. You buy into the Democrat myth that workers have zero negotiating power for hours and wages, and only a benevolent Democrat-led government can save you. Unlike the current massively corrupt administration, the Tweed ring never successfully managed to control the presidency.
