Pretty awesome coverage of the evolution of Mario rescuing Pauline. Thanks! Harris Shore, the original live-action Mario from the Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior commercials, circa 1981.
Although the arcade is the canon one, the original Game Boy one definitely did it best, as that really should how strong Donkey Kong is. After all, he can fight Bowser head-on!
In Arcade, Donkey Kong Got His Head Bumped. And With Nintendo Entertainment System, Donkey Kong Is Moving Without Bumping The Head And With Atari 8-Bit, This Game Was A Playsoft Without The Dot Eyes. And Last One, In Atari 7800, Donkey Kong Copied With Nintendo Entertainment System Donkey Kong
Although my first home experience with DK was on a friend's Atari 800 XL (preferred Popeye), I have played it for about 40 years on a TI-99/4A, so that music for Pauline's save, although mono-tonal, is the one that just sounds right to my ears now. It should be noted that if Atartisoft would have played ball with TI over licensing, they could have had a Grom in the cart, which would have removed the 8K cart restriction providing memory for fire on level 1, springs on level 3, an animated DK, and multi timbral-sound. None of these omissions are because of hardware limitations. With Atarisoft, we get what we get from an unauthorized developer. A game squeezed into 8K. So I'm thankful for what we DID get (and we did get all 4 levels - most didn't). But even on the TI, I still prefer Popeye.
You missed a couple more gameboy deaths btw so I’ll list them down here: - Normal (ex: getting hit by a barrel in midair) - Electrocution (ex: the dangerous power lines) - Drowning (getting hit by and enemy while in the water) - Squished sideways (ex: getting pushed into a wall by an enemy) - Falling (falling from a very high place) - DK (touching Donkey Kong) Hope this helps!
Actually it's a completely different game commonly called Donkey Kong 94'. There are many more stages after this that's why, only the first four levels are same like the original arcade version. I have only included it for the sake of comparison. Learn more about the game here:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donkey_Kong_(1994_video_game)?wprov=sfti1
As somebody who plays Donkey Kong on the NES, I’m glad they gave donkey Kong a new defeat animation when he reaches the bottom, it’s better than the head stand he would do in the other ports, but I understand why, mainly because of the limitations.
everyone talking bout the gb but can we all agree that the amstrad cpc proved that the system was not as primitive as people though. an example is the mario bros port on the amstrad.
...and yet, with a bit of work, the Amstrad CPC port could have been a better port, and ditto for the NES/FDS port of the game as well. Hell, it took Nintendo almost 40 years to FINALLY fix a lot of issues with the NES/FDS port with a new re-release of that game, but they never even bothered to make a new cartridge form of it as well...oh well, at least the modding and aftermarket/custom communities can rectify that problem.
The Vic 20 gave a new falling animation as instead of all 4 bridges connected to the rivets and released without them, Donkey Kong falls down 1 bridge at a time instead of falling straight down to the collapsed bridge and dies to brain damage
There is a whole grand rabbit hole of game music and songs they tried to interpret or took inspiration from or just happen to sound similar. Megaman and Doom are interesting places to start

Who says it's not canon? after all, even in the arcade don't you just loop again from that blue girder stage to the bottom of the building?
I only think it’s canon if the console was made by Nintendo

Popeye and DK were great on the TI but for example Burger Time was horrendous. The music restarting whenever another sound effect played, so grating!

I like how this dude (donkey kong) doesn't die in the texas instruments part but mario saves pauline

Some arcade games like Pengo outright took music without license and were released with changed music. Fewer cares were given about copyright then.
