- The Newark Liberty Airport AirTrain system is a very unique monorail made by Von Roll, which is slated to be torn down. It is very sad to lose this fascinating monorail. Time-lapse cab view plus very cool rotating switches!
I really like this system. I especially love the rotary switches!
The problem is that the cabins are small and slow -- add luggage to the mix and there's often a capacity problem causing unnecessary delays.

@Kevin Krostosky Never mind particular component upgrades at stations, the PANYNJ has felt that the original EWR AirTrain is nearing the end of its life due to frequent troubles, becoming increasingly difficult to maintain so it just couldn't be salvaged any longer. The 1996 AirTrain will shut down permanently, meaning that the EWR train station will also have to temporarily close, and shuttle buses from Newark Penn to all terminals would need to be offered as an alternative. Plus, more shuttle buses will need to be offered between the parking facilities esp. Stations P1-4. However, train tickets to/from EWR will still be able to be purchased through NJT's/Amtrak's site/ticket machines.
@Kevin Krostosky actually they are to keep the EWR airtrain running, but close it for a replacement with something faster, similar to the one at JFK.
Big Time
It's slow and its narrow gauge makes it hard to use during peak times -- it's very difficult to handle luggage in the small cars.
+lohphat It does get full very fast. I wonder if they add more trains to the line and reduce wait times (increase frequency) if that would solve the problem of overcrowding. Although, I've seen transit systems at other airport around the world where passengers frequently have to wait for a second train to have room to get on.
