The first 12 issues sounds like the Thomas jane punisher.

Ennis wrote Wolverine to kind of make fun of him. He's not really into writing superheroes. I get what you're saying about it but I thought it was funny and I laughed out loud for real when he uses the steamroller on him. I thought that was hilarious. His Punisher MAX is much better than the Marvel Knights run. Check out his Crossed series if you want to see the most insane comics ever.
For your next read maybe check out The Goon. If you like Hellboy I think you'll like The Goon. The art is fantastic and the stories are also great. It's one of those books that the more you read the more you like it.

Yeah, I've always felt like an outcast on this, since everyone has always seen this run as one of the best (if not the best) and I really don't see it, now mind you, I'm a huge fan of The Punisher's 2004 MAX run (plus the Born miniseries -- the 2010 MAX series with Jason Aaron/Steve Dillon not so much) and the 2011 Greg Rucka/Chechetto run (which also crossed over with Daredevil and Spider-Man during that Omega Drive mini-event), hell, I like those versions of the character and story more than Jon Bernthal's MCU version so I guess I'm kinda biased -- but I really don't like the Marvel Knights run.
I don't like Dillon's art very much, nor the costume design for the character (still rocking the white boots and spandex). Tim Bradstreet has amazing covers as always and his work in this series is no exception, but his covers feel really out of place and clash against the cartoony extremism of this run -- plus, his covers/artwork carries on into the MAX series where it's much more at home and some of his best work shines (Kitchen Irish was one of the weaker stories, but the cover (from issue #12) is my personal favorite of all time.
I've just always preferred Punisher to be grounded in a grungy, gritty, realism, not some inhumanly-muscled badass hammering through enemies with unlimited ammunition and fighting cliched mob criminals with no dimensions to their characters other than being mere cannon-fodder to gruesome deaths from Frank; no offense to the people who like that stuff, but to me it just comes off as edgy and immature. I prefer it much more when Frank is a fearsome home-grown vigilante, using homemade objects and complex military tactics to his advantage, dealing with the dark abyss of drug cartels, human traffickers, pedophiles, and the really corrupt politicians that work in the shadows who you just don't see when someone like Spider-Man is off dealing with The Lizard.
To be fair though; this series was coming straight off of what was the copper-age version of The Punisher who (along with Spawn, Cable, Venom, and Lobo) really defined what the anti-hero was and seldom moved away from it. So, I guess this was Marvel really just starting to dip their toes and test the waters for darker things to come.

Yea I honestly expected waaay more from Dillon's and Ennis's run on Marvel Knights. You're totally right it was overly campy and cartoonish for a Punisher book, and you could tell Ennis blatantly didn't want to work on this run. Idk I just expected it to be darker I guess, with dark humor sprinkled in, as well as a better story. Thank god his MAX books were as good as they were.

The one thing I've always noticed about Garth has he would rarely ever write a superhero story except for punisher for everything that he's written for like I think a little bit of Batman a little bit of Spider-Man and a few other characters you can only write so much for him then he just bounces Island does his own thing.
Bike for characters like Nick fear and really for punisher he has a way of tackling them to make them so entertaining and so far provoking that they're right of Garth Ennis is a lie of story time that he can be as Extreme as he need to but get a hard-hitting point about the he's trying to making a story about something he's talking about it really bring out the best and characters like The Punisher out that make you realize what he is at his core

nice vid bro. I'm a huge Garth Ennis fan as well, I just love his sick humor and gritty writing. Thanks for the heads up on the reprint of the omnibus gonna pick this up. Also, check out Punisher "The Cell" one-shot by Ennis if you haven't already. Easily one of my fave Punisher stories.

Being an Ennis fan myself, even I can say that Welcome Back Frank, while I like it, is absolutely batshit insane and I think it's supposed to be. But the rest of the MAX run is almost a masterpiece, including Born, the Barracuda arc, and Valley Forge being some notable examples. Ennis I think truly understands the character of Frank Castle as of reading his run of The Punisher.
Edit: So this is the 2001 run you're talking of. The 2004 run is much much better. I like some of the stories from the 2000-2001 run but, like you said, it's too cartoony for my taste

I don´t know if you are into sword and sorcery but I really enjoyed the treatment Dark Horse is giving to Conan. The omnibus books, written by Kut Busiek and with Timothy Truman´s art are awesome and Conan Slayer by Cullen Bunn is also very good. Recommended.

I didn't like the way he did wolverine, he felt too much like an actual animal. The art was not very great, especially for punisher kills, it almost made me not want to read it. I enjoyed the rest of the omnibus though
the punisher max hardcovers are amazing, I haven't read volume 5 since I don't have it but it's great so far. Much more brutal and unforgiving than his Punisher MK omnibus.

Hey gem, so I just finished reading this. On the whole I have to say I really enjoyed it, it was a change up from what I've recently read (ghost rider which i also loved and uncanny x force which I was less keen on). I did like to dark humour in it but have to agree the 'old canuckle head' wasn't wolvies best writing! Next omnibus on its way is hulk by loeb which I've heard good things about! Keep up the great work mate, loving your work as always 👍

Spacker is a dirogatory term for a handicapped person as they used to be termed as spastics in England I believe the term was originaly a legitimate term but soon become a negative one, it is not used any more except when in the negative. All kids of a certain age once upon a time in England and I'm guessing Ireland would call each other spackers.

I read this Omnibus recently, having been able to get my hands on it from Amazon.cn. At first I was disappointed as I found it a little stupid, especially Ma Gnucci and The Russian storylines. This is was too comedic, and wasn't as dark and gritty as I remember Punisher being (having not read any punisher since the 1990's). However, it did get better as the series went on and I thoroughly enjoyed it towards the end. I am currently reading Punisher Max, and I am finding that this is more like what I was expecting. It's a little too violent in places, but it's more in-line with with character of Punisher and less of the jokiness of the beginning of the Marvel Knights Punisher Series. I don't regret buying it as it was excellent towards the end, but stuff like Vigilante Squad was rubbish imo.

Hey Gem, you mentioned that you welcome recommendations for series, I would love for you to do the Akira box set. I recently read Vol 1, and on that strength went out and bought the box set (the box was damaged a little, which is an issue many people have I've heard). Was in Nepal the other week, and whilst I have the .cbr files on my Kindle Fire HD, I thought that I'd wait to get home to reread every Volume before checking out the 25th Anniversary movie. Just got to finish Punisher Max first.

i mean is kind off a dark comedy. i think you were expecting a serius story, clasic action. when you said there were parts where the writing was bad, i think the problem for you was that the joke was about heroes that you like or a parody of the type of story you were expecting. But if anybody wants to read it and can extrac themselfs from that is a greate read.

Not a Garth Ennis fan. Boys is a horrible book. Preacher is trash. Garth is overrated. Not a superhero fan so he makes them look like crap. He goes overboard with being in raunchy. Disgusting. Punisher run had moments. Steamrolled Wolverine.. Art get better later on. He makes Punisher very powerful. Killing the Marvel Universe was a joke.
