For me it’s always been a coin toss between him and his master.
It’s makes a lot of lyrical sense thematically.
They surrendered themselves to power and unlive as shadows from the dark.
Power to make the hearts of lesser men quail in terror while they themselves are bound to the will of another.
Tolkein Wizards are way cooler than Rowling ones. Even though they have magic, they still can throw down with the staff or sword
Not only that but the wizards of Tolkiens world are literally angels in mortal form, not only that but the few pieces of magic you see gandalf use is nothing more then child party tricks for they are forbidden from using their true power for their mission is not one of power but of advice and support for the children of ilúvatar. The only time they are allowed to use their true power is when there are no children of ilúvatar there to witness it nor be harmed from it. The only time gandalf used his true power was when fighting the Balrog of morgoth, they skirmished for 8 days and 2 days full on battle, gandalf using the light of the valar and lightning and the Balrog using the darkness of morgoth and fire.
