I remember reading a reprint of the Abomination's origin. He's always been one of my favorite Hulk foes.

The Abomination is probably my favorite Hulk villain. I have an original comic of Tales to Astonish #91. The 1st appearance of The Abomination.

At times you feel sorry for Emil but other times you don’t.
Yeah, he's hopelessly trapped in this ugly form of himself, but if you look at it the monster form represents his true self. A murderer and wife abuser along with all kinds of other horrible things.
I can't say I like the fact that they later added he abused his wife. Him not telling her who he really is a sad but humanizing story, and it's extremely depressing seeing him being tortured using a video of them together. But all that is kinda ruined now that the marriage was actually horrible, and Emil just evilly laughs after Nadia fails to kill him.
if he's being written right, you should never feel sorry for him.
@@tubucoco I actually seriously hate the wife abuser retcon. (Also there was another comic that tried to half-retcon that and say he had two wives with the same name, but that comic itself got declared a What-if of sorts with its own universe number or temp universe number on the wiki, so I guess he was just madly in love with the same woman he abused.) Honestly have the one he abused be some old communist brainwashing victim s who was supposed to be a check on Blonsky with the abuse being false memories to motivate her. Of course in 2023 that doesn't really work as well as it would have in the old days. Then again Eastern Europe's a mess again so a malevolent slavic conspiracy's probably back in the books.
Yeah it seemed like for a while there they were making him a really sympathetic character but then it was just thrown away.
This is a great video. I really appreciate all the awesome artists that have illustrated The Abomination.
Except whoever did him in Devil's Reign: Villains for Hire Uh spoiers I guess but he shows up in that third issue. The main Devil's Reign art of him was fine, Heroes for Hire he looked like a goblin.
I want to see Abomination take on The Thing. That would’ve been a cool match up.

That issue with the Abomination was one of the first Marvel comics I ever saw. I was about 9 at the time.

Going from someone who dearly loved his wife but could not see her under Peter David, to an abuser under actually I don't remember the writer but the artist paired with him was JRJR and the colorist was someone who really really liked Noir too much.
Can you do history of the Beyonder, Crossfire, Living Laser, Iron Monger, Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, Whiplash, Darkhawk, Union Jack, Annihilus, the Badoon and the Broods?
Given how hard it is to kill Bruce banner, I'm not surprised that Blonsky is continuously the bad penny that turns up when you least expect it.
He actually did stay dead for a few decent stretches.

my favorite thing about comics is how a super hero has roots in sci fi militarism then fights aliens, kgb spies, and witches. it feels so contemporary of the time and has massive charm from that.

Are we talking about Tales to Astonish 91 for 12 cents? Hulk and Submariner. The Hulk story was second which featured the Abomination origin. "Whosoever Harms the Hulk...!" by Stan Lee, Gil Kane and lettered by Artie Simek. I wonder if I can still order a 1000x Electric Scope.
The only thing about when the Abomination fight the Hulk I don't like is that he never beats the Hulk. And they give the Hulk and upgrade but not the Abomination .
While researching this, I definitely noticed that the Abomination was handily defeated far more than I expected.
Abomination has definitely been upgraded over the years,the thing is Hulk is simply stronger that's his whole thing,He's the strongest there is... In a straight up brawl Hulk should always win.. Abomination has gotten stronger over the years but so has the Hulk.

I personally prefer the 2008 Hulk movie origin story. It made more sense to me and I also like the design better. I still like the comic version but I just find it odd how he looks like a sea monster, and I’m kinda bummed that the MCU has turned him into a fish man now too
I liekd the sea monster look, he's from what's now Croatia IIRC(But is I believe a different Yugoslav ethnicity) and that has a large coast.

Wow, I never knew what had happened to the Abomination. Whatever became of villains like Wendigo and the Zodiac Cartel?
Abomination always felt wasted to me. He's as strong as the Hulk, a spy master, and a fully trained fighter. Blonksky should be an A-list villain like Apocalypse and Red Skull yet all he does is stay in a sewer feeling sorry for himself.
I liked his sewer era.

If I can design Abomination, I would have it inspired by the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Since Hulk was based on Universal's Frankenstein and Jekyll/Hyde.

At least one other person IN marvel disliked the Nadia revenge and wrote a whole mini where The Abomination had two wives with the same name and only beat one of them. This got classed as its own alternate universe though. I would much rather have gone even further and sad the Nadia who remembered the abuse was not the real Nadia, some sort of brainwashed puppet of the old Yugoslav or Soviet government. (I stole this idea from somewhere but I don't remember where.)

It seems there are multiple ways that name can be pronounced, depending on where the person is from. I decided to just go with the same pronunciation as the Incredible Hulk film.
