I have no anxiety about film prices. I only shoot black and white and the stocks I've used for years have only seen a very slight increase in price. I always develop my own film, in home-made chemicals, I scan my own film, so it's still as cheap as analog photography can be.

I've standardized on pro packs of Portra 400 in 35mm and 120. Have messed around with lots of films in the past but whenever I see a photo where I love the color, it's almost always Portra. It's why I started shooting film again after messing around with digital for several years. Portra 400 + Mamiya 7 = heaven. A Contax t2 with 35mm Portra is a close second. Shoot and get it developed and scanned at my local lab and done. No need to mess around in Lightroom for hours trying to get the "film look". If you count your time, it's not that expensive.

As an old film photojournalist. I used 100 and 125 speed film for the most of my work. I never had a problem getting the shots I needed. Even in other than ideal daylight conditions. 100 speed back in the 90s and earlier was a standard. I also used 400 for lowlight and action. I think people today compare film speed’s with digital iso, and what their digital camera can do. I prefer film and use it with its film speed in mind.

I enjoyed working with Santa Color 100 but found it was a bit overcooked at 100, and it works well at 200 and even 400 and developed normally. Scala 50 is an amazing film, I’ve developed it both as a negative and as a positive. If you can’t find it as Scala 50, look for HR-50, same stock. As for film stocks in my fridge, it’s mostly b&w, colour I leave to my D750 mostly. Lots of Ilford, Adox and Foma here!

It's always good to stay in touch with the film side of photography even when going deep down the digicam rabbit hole. For me it's CineStill 400D and 50D as well (in a few months time when there should be enough sunlight for it). But, I'll also have some standard B&W stuff to use - like Fomepan and Kentmere.

I am having the most fun shooting up seventeen rolls of Kodak Ektachrome E100VS I bought in 2006. It has been frozen most of that time, but still has a purplish cast that gave some recent woodland shots such a haunted character that I made no attempt to color correct it. We found one of those rolls in a point and shoot, so it had not been frozen and it took maximum Dehaze in Lightroom to see anything at all so they became maximally grainy B&W's. There were mostly just magenta pixels left, a few blues, no greens.

I've got a fair bit stuffed away in the fridge. I'll have to check it out and catalogue it so I know what's in there! Last film I bought was Gold200 in 120 format...box of 5 rolls. I've also got quite a bit of film I've yet to process, as well. I tend to shop around when looking for new film, but I do have a few fave places, like Walkens, to buy from. Although, most places are having trouble getting new stock. That's where alternative film processes are good, like wet and dry plate photography. It's all DIY and you can get your hands dirty in the nitty gritty of the old ways of doing things. Give you another avenue of creating good pics.

Good timing with this vid; just yesterday I took stock of my film stock to see what I need to replenish for upcoming trips to Portugal and Japan (answer: Tri-X and CS 800T in both 35 and 120). Our aesthetics are rather different-I’m more of a BW and muted colors guy, but glad to see CS 400D on your list. You’re right; it’s a good all-rounder. I like the not-so-punchy colors but with that touch of oddball halation. But it is expensive. I do have a bunch of Portra 400 and 160 in my fridge bought years ago when more affordable and plan to take a couple rolls to Portugal in May. The other color films coming along are Lomo Metropolis (the opposite of Santa Color 100!) because its desaturated colors and edgy contrast are great for a certain kind of gritty urban look or simply as something different; and a few rolls of Ektar 100 for medium format pinhole photography-pinholes are the only thing I use super-saturated color film for. As for BW, which I shoot more of, it’s Kodak Tri-X, Double-X, and Fuji Acros 100.

I very seldom take pictures with color film, I mostly use b&w when using a 35mm or medium format camera. I use color film when color is the main reason to take that picture, so I want a film which has very strong and punchy colors. To me, that is Kodak Ektar.
For b&w I don't care to much about the characteristic of the film, to me the motif I took a picture of is much more important. So I only use two different b&w films, one for "normal" situations - where I usually buy the cheapest film I can get, which is Fomapan in these days - and the second for high contrast pictures, which is ADOX CMS 20 right now.

Happy to see you hit on two of my absolute favorite stocks I've been using for about a year or so now (well, one of them, the other ones newer!) I've been interested in Santacolor 100 for a little bit, so definitely with your endorsement, I'm sold on picking up a couple of rolls. I might snag a roll of Adox Mission as well just on your say so! Give it a try for myself!
So, I haven't put either of those through any of my cameras yet, but...Portra 160 and Cinestill 400D? That's a whole 'nother story! Portra 160 has been around longer so I've shot boatloads of it at this point, and only a couple of Cinestill 400D, but you and Matt Murray sold me on 400D on the Analog Hour, and talking about pushing it really made me want to try that for concert photography, just haven't had the chance yet!
Some of my favorite shots I've taken this year, or maybe EVER have been on Portra 160. I'd take it over Portra 400 EVERY. DAY. Gorgeous stock! I kinda' of don't understand (and maybe this is just me but...) how Portra 400 became like the 'gold standard' and one of the stocks that I ALWAYS see new shooters picking up at my local camera store. It's a great stock, no doubt, but its PERVASIVE popularity eludes me a bit.
It's feast or famine in these parts on 160 these days, and even though there's a higher (but fair) price hike at these small camera/film shops, I really like to try and support the one in my area, since I think they're treasures in our communities and that we have at least some responsibility as film photographers to help support and keep alive if we want to see film continue to survive and thrive, so I order online only when I really have too, or they don't carry the stock I'm looking for.
All in all, awesome video as per usual! I always love seeing your name pop up under my youtube bell, or when your work shows up on my IG feed! Love it! And you sold me on trying two new color stocks, so I'd say you're doing more than your bit to keep film photography alive and kickin'! Thanks, Lucy!
Sorry, I leave such long comments! I get going on my film passion and it's hard for me to stop talking!!

Oooh Im hanging on to a ten pack of Santa Color for summertime (winter here in NY) and now I’m more excited! Other than that, I pick up a pack of Fuji Xtra 400 at the drugstore every time i stop in because they’re still selling it for $9 (US) a roll… there’s a LOT of xtra 400 in the back of our fridge now!!! Not my favorite film but it’s fine for being half the price of Portra 400! But, ultimately, most of my shooting daily is on Kentmere 400 because its still $5/roll and I can develop and scan it at home for next to nothing. Color film is now more of a special thing.

Excellent choices !!! May I add a few more ? I would love to see a review on the Washi X ( preferably developed as slide film ), Atlanta Film Co.‘s „Euphoric“ ( must be a super interesting film ), Santa Colors cheap alternative „Luminar 100“ or the new „Candido“ from the UK. Also notable, ReflxLab‘s very affordable reversal film, made from fresh 5294 motion picture film (Ektachrome 100D). Saturated colors plus natural skin tones, almost like the classic Kodachrome.

I also enjoy SantaColor and Cinestill 400D shooting several rolls recently in Las Vegas. Still have plenty of Santa, but only 2 left of 400D. I also shoot a lot of Fuji X-tra 400 very cheap and like the look. For BW I have Delta 400 and Fuji Acros 100. Yes you can freeze Film before it expires, so you can extend the remaining lifetime by approximately 10 times.

Santa Color says they've stopped production as the materials were from Russia, and Adox color Mission had their supplier go bankrupt and they're having to start over. Hard to find these films you're recommending.

Hello 👋🏻 I just checked the Santa color IG page and they have a story post with a link to order the film??
I didn’t know this about adox though thank you for letting me know - has that been announced publicly?

It says on the Adox website they are preparing a new batch so it’s still happening just being restocked because it sold out.

@@LucyLumen not sure, Adox is in the R&D stage they say, so good news is they won't rely on a supplier, they will make their own materials, but it may be some time before we see it available again...

Hi! I'm head of the SantaColor production and sales. There has been a misunderstanding here - our black and white films has material made in Russia and we discontinued those. SantaColor material is made in the US and we have actually just started spooling more - it will be available with all our retailers very soon! ❤
