Make sure you include an emergency budget for unexpected happenings. Mechanical issues requiring repair shop work, inclement weather conditions that may force you to seek unplanned hotel/motel accommodations, etc. This is money you will not spend but is a good idea to have in reserve.

I drove my seventy three norton eight fifty commando from my basin texas all the way home to my mother's house in minnesota. It's a baby ADV, the CB500X, and I'm looking for routes, which is brought what brought me to this video. I live in Washington, so this may be a good first week trip. You've been riding consistently since '74? That is awesome! I have some trepidation about my skills, esp. as I've been off-road only on a mountain bike!
I usually do an after ride cost analysis like this. My 6,000 mile loop from Indiana to Washington down to California and home was 2100 and that was with 10 hotels and four nights of staying with friends really not bad considering that being two weeks worth of time. I think you did excellent cost-wise.
When I do motorcycle trips, I don’t include food as an expense… you have to eat somewhere anyway so that never gets included in my expense sheet… and I’d drink way more beer sitting at home anyway so there is a cost savings… Here being excellent to each other…
Nice video! My daughter and I also did the WBDR from North to South in late July this year. It was priceless and once you're on the road, it's so inexpensive that I never even considered adding up the costs. (Prepping for it is another story and I was too chicken to add up those costs.. ;-) ) We camped every night for free and, other than one breakfast, one lunch and one dinner @ gas stop towns, we cooked all of our meals. I highly recommend this trip as a vehicle to bond with your son or daughter. I'll cherish the memory forever.
I just got my first bike this year. 2020 CRF250L Rally and I was so excited when I realized that all I would need to get to go motocamping is luggage. I've been into backpacking for the past few years and I already have full camping kit. Super excited to get out there next season or later this season if possible. Thanks for making videos being transparent about finances, I come from a lower income background and traveling always seemed like something I wouldn't be able to do. I know better now though :)
When you look at food cost remember to compare to what it would cost you to eat at home for the duration of the trip. Unless you eat every meal in restaurants there isn't a big difference. Cooking takes time but I see it as part of the overall experience.
Awesomeness! Motorcycle travel is the only way to go! My 21 day tour of Oregon and Washington, not a BDR, cost me just under $2000 including my hotel stays (almost half the cost) due to it being the wettest June-uary in history. That doesn’t include my luggage or camp gear, that was ferry, fuel, food, camping.
It's so rad that you enjoyed your time on the WABDR, the OG BDR! That's how we got hooked on BDR too! Just wait until you do other ones cause each has their own character that is so different from the others!
One thing to consider is that you have to eat whether you’re on the BDR or not or any trip for that matter so that cost is there no matter what. So I don’t like to include that because that cost as a given. If I’m going to eat out more than normal and that is the cost that I add.
It's important to also think about costs that seem general but are specifically due to off road travel. My Inreach plan is one. It's something I would not have if I stayed on pavement all day, so I tend to account for the monthly cost in trips. Another is a "fund" for unexpected repairs. I had to detour to a dealership to repair a fork leg on a BDR trip after a tip over in some rocks. To the tune of ~$300. And once you start talking about really long trips (TAT, TCAT), things like tires, oil changes, general maintenance, heck even your phone bill start to mean something.
I did the trip solo. I only stayed at a "hotel" one night for $60, spent a little over $200 on gas, and ate a lot of snacks and freeze dried meals so restaurant bills were under$100. I'd roughly guess I spent around $350.
Luggage is only part of the cost when it comes to Adventure Camping Gear, I have spent a year gathering up all of the nits and nacks to go bike camping, tent, bag, cooking stuff, ...etc.. it adds up to another pretty good chunk of change.. and yes, can vary greatly depending on what you buy (I only bought stuff when it was on sale) but I'm likely still $1400-$2000 inside the luggage.. and it's stuff I will only likely use while bike camping.. But like the luggage, it's spread over time and divided each trip. So it gets cheaper with each trip you go on, right? RIGHT?!
Dude. I have not done a Bdr yet but looking forward to doing so with my son. I did a 7500 mile trip cross country and man bdr is a lot less expensive and seems like more fun
Me and my buddies are buying mini bikes ( kp mini 150's) and we are gunna do a ton moto camping and there 5 of us :) cheap fun and adventures 😀 here in Missouri
Good Info. I am about to set off on the NMBDR and I will probably have to do some rerouting if the rain gets bad. I have saved a little over twice what you spent but it will be a total of around 3K miles + - when i'm done and I will probably have to get a hotel if the rain gets too bad and also on the ride home. It will be a 14 hr trip back home and you can always add 2 hrs for rest stops and gas, minimum. Whoo boy I am excited. My first BDR trip and solo at that. A couple friends and I went earlier this year but it didn't pan out as well as we thought it would. Time for round 2
Everything you said was spot on. I spend significantly less on a weeklong motorcycling trip than any other. Five days and four nights on the NEBDR cost me $72 for gas, $115 for campsites, $100 for freeze dried meals (my preferred way of traveling light), and $60 for drinks and cigars around the campfire. Compared that to the $20K spent taking the wife and grand kids on holiday to the Mediterranean. Which by the way is a Husky 701 with upgrades.
I live in NC and was thinking about doing the TAT end-to-end. I was really surprised when I was trying to add up the cost of the trip 😲. And reading what other people spent. Of course there are so many variables, like whether you use hotels, pay camp, free camp, etc.. It's right around $3000.00 to $4000.00. In that expense is shipping the motorcycle back at about $1400.00. Had to put off that trip😂.
I use $75 per day to estimate the cost of my trips. I have never packed food, so my daily estimate includes eating out which many times means breakfast and diner at a restaurant and a snack at a gas station.
I rode the CO BDR with some buddies in Sep 2020. Expenses were similar to this. We had one motel in the middle of the ride so we could get showered and a yurt at the end so maybe and additional $20 - 30 each. This year I plan on the NM, AZ, OR, WA and ID BDRs so see you out there.
I started riding last year and hope to ride Washington bdr next year on my wr250r. Been working on lots of mods for bike and gear needed to ride. I live in middle of section 3 and excited for the trip. Im 3 days away from taking the pacific coast highway trip right now.
I have done these sort of cost breakdowns as well, don't count the price of the gear. You can really save big money by doing some cooking and camping in free areas, it's a great way to take a cheap vacation!
I've never added a trip up but this past May we did a trip from Bend to Joshua Tree and back up the 1. I am guessing around $750 total, not bad for 10 days and 2500 miles on the road.
and camping gear is good and cheap these days. walmart tents, budget camp stove from amazon, stanley boiling pot with 2 cups that fit inside is handy and fits the cheap stoves inside it which is like $15 i think, canned soups are pretty good these days for $2 or 3 per meal. In case you spent all your money on your ride and gear, it can still be done on half a paycheck
Planning on doing Wyoming BDR and I'm budgeting $3-4K. $500 seems pretty unrealistic and not everyone has all the gear to just be ready to pack up and go. Also need to have budget for emergency breakdowns/repairs... I'll try to remember to come back here after my trip and give details of what I spent. Hopefully I've way over-budgeted so I can justify buying more stuff, lol
Yes, but as I mentioned the cost of your gear gets spread out over many trips. The expenses specifically related to this trip for what I was cataloging. Unless you're staying in hotels, there's no way you're going to spend that much. You could take a fully supported and guided trip for that.
We did the wabdr in a total of 1052 miles.....and i spent less thsn 125 in gas.....why are we so different....weird...im with you and definitely will be donating to the bdr...that is money very well spent..awesome experience and will definitely be doing more..already planning idaho next year...
Consider this. Having a good set of bags for my bike not only lets me tour and camp with the bike but it allows me to use the bike for other things like commuting to work and running errands. The fuel saved by taking the bike instead of the car More than covers the cost of the bags. That's what you tell your wife anyway.

My buddy and I did a 4 day trip I was on a ktm 500xcw my buddy used a klr650 we used Nelson rigg dual sport $129. A $30 40letter back pack i spent about $60 camping hammock with a sleeping pad and used a blanket $40 on a cook set Then when to the thrift store and bought 2 of the biggest pares of jeans I could find cut the legs off and used tarp groomets and made more luggage. Less than $300 for all the for all the gear I needed to be comfortable. You could start from scratch buy a used klr650 riding gear and camping gear 6k or less.
Did the Wyoming bdr from Cincinnati spent about a 1000 bucks and definitely could of made it cheaper, hotels and good eating. Was way cheaper then what I was expecting.
IDK that I have ever spent $500 on a trip if don't factor in anything bike related except gas. Once after 4 days of straight rain I got a hotel, still disappointed in myself 10 years later but not because of the money. For sure a great VALUE if your into some balanced adventuring. Nothing makes me feel all emotions like a adventure ride!

I like the old logging / winch truck at 1:02 ! If I go this dual sport rout it will be on charged on the hour . I'm thinking about 100$ and hour for trip and service from port to port ?
I found your channel because I have been wanting to do moto camping for some time now. I have bikes but only one out of them all I could use would be my Honda ct90 lol the thing is fun but its lacking in power to say the least .
If that ct90 has the low range built in like some of them do it will climb a tree if the bark would hold. If it does not have that just put a much larger rear sprocket on it and it will get you there just not very fast. Do a search for ct90 on RUclips and you will see that there are people who have traveled the world on one of those little under powered bikes. You don't have to do all of the BDR in one go you can do it in sections also.
So, have you considered other BDRs? I’m looking at NMBDR and AZBDR next year, provided I can still afford it after setting up the new bike. (Ps- videos are on RUclips ) So, mistaking Travis pooping for Sasquatch was epic, believable too, I mistook my chubby buddy for a bear once. We both pooped a little. 😮 Which brings me to saying thank you for giving the break down of your expenses video. Muchachas Garcia’s. (I’m not Spanish, obviously) But thank you sir, I do appreciate it. I do hope to meet you one day, then we can be two overweight bearded middle aged guys making it up as we go and talking about it for a few.
@@DorkintheRoad That's about my thought too. I rode it this past Sunday on my DRZ just to see what it was like. I'd never ride my T7 on it after seeing how littered with rocks it was. The moon dust wasn't fun either, combined with it being relatively steep up hill (I went South).
Jesus that’s crazy more expensive than I spend! Like probably by a factor of 4! I’m on a 650 getting 65 mpg and cooking pasta every night. I mean I imagine there are a lot of variables people could use to make it outrageously more expensive than you. Like hotels and paying for portage in a tour package. And variables making it cheaper than me. But yeah if $500 scares people I’d hazard to say it could be done on more like $100 with some effort.

I do loads of 2 night camping trips and I end up spending more on beer at camp than all other costs combined.
I live in the Tri-Cities area of Washington and have been considering doing a few sections of the trail this month before the snow starts to fall 🤞

Sounds right.. hauling to a bdr out of state usually runs me $800-1200 with bdr in total.. splitting gas costs helps

Always take a Ben with you on an extended trip. A Tim too. A Tim is great for a bushcraft EDC kit…….

I found your channel because I have been wanting to do moto camping for some time now. I have bikes but only one out of them all I could use would be my Honda ct90 lol the thing is fun but
its lacking in power to say the least .
I mean, I went motocamping on my Grom, so anything is possible I suppose.
If that ct90 has the low range built in like some of them do it will climb a tree if the bark would hold. If it does not have that just put a much larger rear sprocket on it and it will get you there just not very fast. Do a search for ct90 on RUclips and you will see that there are people who have traveled the world on one of those little under powered bikes. You don't have to do all of the BDR in one go you can do it in sections also.

@@DorkintheRoad That's about my thought too. I rode it this past Sunday on my DRZ just to see what it was like. I'd never ride my T7 on it after seeing how littered with rocks it was. The moon dust wasn't fun either, combined with it being relatively steep up hill (I went South).

Jesus that’s crazy more expensive than I spend! Like probably by a factor of 4! I’m on a 650 getting 65 mpg and cooking pasta every night. I mean I imagine there are a lot of variables people could use to make it outrageously more expensive than you. Like hotels and paying for portage in a tour package. And variables making it cheaper than me. But yeah if $500 scares people I’d hazard to say it could be done on more like $100 with some effort.
