  • In this video interview, I zoom with Jeff Horchoff, and tap into his experiences and observations where feral honey bee colonies are concerned.
Jeff also shares a lot of personal information about his live and how he came to "Bee". :)
I was particularly interested in the arrangement of comb, the size of entrances, and location of brood in abandoned structures.

It was a real pleasure speaking with you yesterday evening Fred, and I certainly hope your would consider interviewing me again, it was a lot of fun. Not that I plan on keeping notes from the removals I do even though you suggested I should, I will try and make comments on aspects of what I observe concerning hive construction and bee behavior. And one more thing, when you are ready to build that lean to for your bees, let me know and I may just show up to help, you know your wife was right. God's peace brother.

Fred, Again a superb interview. Mr. Ed is a hoot and is such a gentleman. In this short time during this interview, I have learned more than I do watching other channels. Mr. Ed is like your grandmother and her recipes for your favorite desserts. She can not tell you the quantities but says a pinch of this and a splash of that. He knows what he has done and how he has done it, just does not have a log of it.

Another great interview Fred! You are interviewing all my favorite people. Please add JP Thebeeman and Randy Oliver to your list.

We lazy Beekeepers appreciate the disciplined note takers for you are an unending source of inspiration.
You and Mr Ed had people cheering from both sides of the beekeeping fence! It kept us glued to the video to see which one of you thought the most like us. Thank you for realizing the wisdom in hearing about many ways that people find to keep bees that work for them.
And one other thought about bees finding places to live and detecting possible air currents- after all, aren't bees covered with tiny hairs? What better way to detect air movement is there?
Thanks again. There was no part of the video that should be skipped.

Thank you Jeff and Fred. That was wonderful. I got into bees because when I was in college (very stressful) one winter there was a hive in the wall of the house where I rented a room. I would go at night and stand next to the wall and listen to the bees hum. It was so amazing. So calming, so stress relieving. THAT is why I keep bees. They are such a comfort and yes, they do show the amazing hand of God. It’s like they are humming His praises. You blessed me, Jeff, with the recall of that memory and thank you, Fred, for this interview.

I am new to beekeeping. Not quite a year yet. I did not know a thing about bees or beekeeping. I started out fostering a hive. Read the whole beekeeping for dummies book. I knew right off the bat, I did want to treat the bees. Just what you are talking about, the bees can take care of themselves...it just makes sense to me. About 5 months into the bees, I started watching Jeff's bee removal channel. I loved it! So fascinating. Less than a year of keeping bees, I have done almost 5 bee hive removals. I absolutely love it! I am a female I have a family of 6. 2 kids are grown and out of the home. 2 kids are in the home still. Just recently moved to Arizona. I just want to say, anyone can do this. I have a new passion in bee removals and keeping bees naturally. An exciting new journey for me. I am all about the raw honey😁. I really enjoyed this interview, thank you. Appreciate all the info

I have to wonder, given a northern climate (like Pennsylvania) if the lean-to would give the same results - So Fred your wife wins and you get to share with us the results! Southern humidity, heat and sun can be brutal (I've lived in Texas and in Maryland, Pennsylvania) so have experienced both sets of conditions. Thankfully I've never lived in the far north like Ian. That is too dang cold! Building habitat is something we all need to be doing for the future. As a child the Lord placed a swarm in a small nectarine tree at eye level... been hooked ever since and blessed by God to break open the mysteries of beekeeping for/to others. Blessed again by the bees sharing their reproduction process which I've fallen for hook line and sinker! Veils off to both of you! Definitely a vocation and not meant for just anyone. I always say one can purchase an awful lot of honey with the money it takes to get started in beekeeping and sometimes the best way to support bees is to plant a tree and purchase your honey from your local beekeeper. Only a beekeeper can fully appreciate yellow poo in the snow, bees in witch hazel, the first emerging drones in spring, skunk cabbage, watching a virgins first orientation flights, watching as the queen leaves the hive when it swarms, finding four virgins in a swarm... LOL I'd better stop I'm getting high!

Thanks for bringing this series of interviews to us Frederick. Beekeeping brings so much richness into our lives; there’s always some aspect of it that draws some people in, whether it be the science, the connection with nature, the husbandry, the carpentry … and in this interview with the wonderful Mr Ed, his preference for learning by experience and community rather than through books and data collection is just gorgeous. The regional aspects of beekeeping also came through strongly.
I hope you re-interview everyone, as the season changes, and other topics of interest reveal themselves now that you’ve done the first round.

Hi Fred , many thanks for having Jeff (Mr Ed) on your channel. I watch him as well since starting my hobby beekeeping adventure a couple years ago. I agree with what Jeff talks about at around 41:04. I've been testing with wooden frames without bottom bars in my langstroth hives. I love this style beecause they build the comb with awesome patterns and travel holes. I started this test because I prefer using medium boxes and ran out of frames. I stopped using deeps and chopped leftover medium frames down to medium size and was too busy to make a bottom bar after chopping them 🤣. Turns out, for the brood boxes, it's great. It's adventurous when using frames without bottom bars in the honey supers 😉.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  2 года назад +1

With foundationless frames, I've found the bees often never connect to that bottom bar, but I like having it there for structural stability with the end verticals.

Hi George, I know that there are a lot of people who come to my channel to relax and fall to sleep :) Not something most presenters want to hear, but that's just fine by me :) Even non-beekeepers often listen when they are stressed :)

Excellent interview with many wonderful insights into beekeeping. The tips along the way are good, but Jeff's insights are much better. Thanks for doing this interview!

Still catching up on your back episodes. Wow. I’m from St. Louis. My first cousin is Mike Hemkens. He was and is unique. Had a red tail hawk and soon my family follow suit. One of my brothers ended up getting the permit and a female hawk. Wow. Neat to have a connection to you who really are someone I admire.

Well done! Finding Randy first and then Jeff 2 years ago got me into this whole...well lets say experience ;) The people behind the bees is always of equal importance to the bees themselves to really enjoying every aspect and fulfillment of beekeeping. The non commercial beekeeper is in for personal gratification and what I call "Brain food". The impact it's had for me, retired with the need to never stop learning. The change I see in myself to slow down, pay closer attention, eat and walk up stairs slower. I had spent decades breeding, selling, showing and judging tropical fish (huge fish-room). The thought of getting back to the 7 day a week grind had no appeal. Broke my heart to have to cancel my trip to Hive Life to meet everyone. Two days before my wife was hit with covid, thankfully lasting only five days. I manage my hives in shorts, tee-shirt and ball cap. This year only stung twice above thumb, pulled frame to fast rolling a bee. Used the jacket/veil once. I live in Pittsburgh (Monroeville) and would like to head up and visit (?). Defiantly get Randy! His life outside of "wrangling" is deep...

When I watch Mr Ed I notice the time of day and whether they are working in the sun and shade. In LA with high temps and humidity, I believe i notice cut outs are on the north side of the buildings to minimize temperature extremes from direct sunlight. Also the fact that the brood is set up low rather than high, may be that low is the zone that is more consistently cooler. These would be interesting conjectures to investigate.

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview. Very insightful. I handle my bees very similar to Mr. Ed, except that I do treat with Oxalic Acid. But for the most part, I take the hands off approach. Thanks for the interview!

Excellent video Fred! Love the great questions. Thanks for taking the time and effort to produce these. The video was both educational and enjoyable. As I watched I just kept thinking and realizing there could not be two more diverse personalities talking together...It was Mr bubbly extrovert that can "wing it" and go with the flow versus Mr. serious and studious that likes organization, processes, and data. Its like watching an artist and an engineer discuss and describe an object they both love. The Yankee vs the Southerner. Loved it.
