I’ve a suggestion. Detaching divisions! You could detach a division to scout or split up the army and converge on the enemies from multiple angles, maybe even bait the enemies!
In my opinion: Prussia: high spirit and well-trained soldier Russia: bayonet is my best friend France: artillery, artillery , artillery England: I wear my red coat, so the enemies can't see blood on my coat.
Regiments of Croatian and Slavonian military frontier (grentzers) had artillery. As I recall, one battery per regiment. But usually regiments send only one battalion for "European" wars while others stayed home to "observe" the Turks. Most probably artillery stayed "home". If war in your game comes to Croatia, maybe they should get this bonus? Just a suggestion. BTW Game looks awesome.
Im glad someone mentiones the croatian and slavonian grenzers! One of austrias most capable troops thanks to the constant clashes on the southern boarder. And yes they had their own Artillery, (usually 2 companies)
In terms of how each country plays: British: Powerhouse (strong units (especially infantry)) Prussians: Balanced (versatile infantry and cavalry) Russia: Subversive (pragmatic gameplay) Austrians: Cannon (strong cavalry and artillery) French: Horde (numerical advantage)
Reminds me of Cossack game series this does. But modernised and with a new unique art style for the game. Hope this game goes far and gets the fan love it deserves.
Suggestions to break down Don Cossacks and Slobodian Cossacks (thanks GPT 4o): 1. Morale Don Cossacks: Higher morale. As a warrior class with a deep-seated culture of military service, the Don Cossacks were known for their resilience and loyalty. This can translate into higher morale, especially when fighting in open plains or familiar environments. Slobodian Cossacks: Slightly lower morale. The Slobodian Cossacks were more regionally-based and often engaged in irregular warfare. They would have high morale in skirmishes or defensive positions but might suffer in prolonged direct engagements. 2. Marching Speed Don Cossacks: Moderate speed. Known for their heavy reliance on horseback, Don Cossacks would maintain a steady pace that allows for endurance over long distances. Slobodian Cossacks: Higher speed. These Cossacks would excel in rapid maneuvers, especially in shorter bursts, as they were more accustomed to quick, guerrilla-style tactics and often acted as scouts or raiders. 3. Accuracy of Shooting Don Cossacks: Moderate accuracy. Don Cossacks were skilled with a variety of weapons but weren’t known primarily for sharpshooting. They would rely on a balance of ranged and close combat. Slobodian Cossacks: Higher accuracy. Since the Slobodian Cossacks would likely engage in ambushes and skirmishes, they’d prioritize accurate shots from cover, making them more reliable in ranged combat. 4. Charge Don Cossacks: High charge capability. Renowned for fierce cavalry charges, the Don Cossacks would have a powerful, intimidating charge with a significant morale impact on enemies. Slobodian Cossacks: Moderate charge. While effective in smaller skirmishes, the Slobodian Cossacks would not deliver the same impactful charge as their Don counterparts, preferring to harass rather than engage in heavy assaults. 5. Melee Combat Don Cossacks: Excellent melee fighters. With a culture steeped in close-quarters combat, they’d perform well in melee, using sabers and spears with high effectiveness. Slobodian Cossacks: Moderate melee skills. While they could hold their own, Slobodian Cossacks might rely more on tactical positioning than brute strength, preferring hit-and-run tactics rather than direct melee combat. This differentiation emphasizes the Don Cossacks as powerful frontline cavalry and melee specialists, while the Slobodian Cossacks excel in mobility, skirmishing, and ranged precision. Balancing these differences would create diverse tactical opportunities for the Russian Empire faction in the game.
The art shown at 6:06 is directly inspired by the battle scene in Barry Lindon, and if you want you'll be able to create historic or even made up regiments with the customization system.
just looking at this as a bit of background noise and i find the game interessting so i like to keep up to date and then at ~7:30 the mention of my home town kinde got me by suprise ngl if i can defande Minden in the campange that would be dope xD
Hey Schalk! Really cool you're from Minden. Our campaign system takes you through procedurally generated terrain and pulls from a list of names of towns found in the regions you're in. So it is possible to campaign within Hanover, and spot the town of Minden as well as other villages/towns nearby.
So not only is every playable state distinct from one another, but distinct from themselves; it feels like with the distinct trees function, we can have one nation with 2-5 totally different play styles, which is really cool.
A question I have is if it's possible that there will an option to have some Belgian (Called Austrian Netherlands at the time) infantry or cav units. It has historically been a quite densely populated region after all. Just only Artillery feels of to me. It may be possible however that some of the German and Border region infantry for the French however was recruited in the Austrian Netherlands since it's on the way to Prussia. I do not know much about the 7 years war and am just speculating of course.
There were 5 Dutch infantry regiments in the Austrian army during the war (one raised by France and then transferred to Austrian command), but since they weren't that many and also for quantity balancing reasons I don't think they're gonna add them. But if they don't you'll still be able to customize the regiments' uniform, flag and name to match historic units or make up your own.
They use the same uniform as the regular German fusiliers, so all you need to do is rename your German fusiliers to "Netherlandish Fusiliers" and adjust their flags if needed as well.
So excited to see the playtest! As for the Russian Cavalry, the Curassiers (Csr) should have higher morale and melee but mediocre charge, the Grenadiers (Gdr) higher charge bonus but lower morale. Ie the Csr hit average but stay in the fight longer, Gdr hit hard but cannot sustain for long in melee. Hopefully leads to Csr able to operate independently while the Gdr need to hit a flank or shaken enemy. Also a final note, I HIGHLY reccomend really putting time and effort into HIGH QUAILTY SOUND EFFECTS for the Battles. Obviously the artistic graphics are great but an amazing soundscape can really seal the immersion. The thunderous cannon, crackling rifles, tin of drums. "The Crescendo of Battle"
Hey Prince! Thanks for the information. We definitely want to make the sound design good, it was one of my favorite parts of Empire/Napoleon Total War.
That's on our list of features but I'm unsure if it'll make it into the launch of the game. We'll see depending on how much time we've got, we just want to be very careful of how much work we can take on before launch.
Please update steam regional prices for Fire&Maneuver. I want to try the game but my region LATAM copy US prices. Excited for the new game, great work guys!
I think the unit progression from recruits (peasants) to guards is wrong. I think you would add more realism and gameplay variety by adding a separate branch with guard units starting with foot guards. Historically, the guard was recruited from the upper classes and had better equipment, which did not always reflect on its effectiveness in battle. However, creating a separate branch for provincial regiments and guards would be a great addition to the game.
Hi Perun! Definitely would be more historical if we went that route, but I think for gameplay purposes it's more fun to be able to see your unit progress into a much better unit. I looked into splitting the trees up even more, but I found it wasn't as fun if you could only upgrade a unit 1-2 times between several mini-trees.
@@armchairhistoryinteractive2046 I see your point. Maybe you should add last level of regiment progression as "renown regiment". And maybe progression for officers in regiments if you haven't yet done it.
This is really nice to see! Excited for this game. At first glance it seems France getting only 1 tree should be changed. The Volontaires could be their own tree as Volontaires Recruits, with the Irish/German/Swiss as Foreign Recruits. Or maybe both Volontaires and Irish/German/Swiss troops as Foreign Recruits. France having 1 big tree and 1-2 smaller trees seems better, more variety and more interesting. The Russian Artillery Recruits seem obsolete and kind of detrimental (if I understand correctly that this makes the recruiting more random). I don't see a problem adding the artillery into the main Russian tree. For Austria, perhaps Croat or Pandur irregulars could be added. I've many more unit ideas and will consider reaching out to you directly in the future. Best of luck and consider me an instant buyer!
Hey Ruben, thanks so much for the feedback! I gave France one large tree solely for gamification reasons. I thought it'd be interesting if each nation had their own style of unit tree distinct from the others. And France was known at this time for having the largest military, so giving them the flexibility to churn out a lot of different troops was something I wanted to represent. I had originally considered Volontaires + the Swiss/German/Irish as their own tree, but I made it all one tree just for the fun of it honestly. It's the same with the Russians, I wanted to make them distinct by having a ton of small trees since they had a harder time with their supply lines and managing their forces. I did consider Pandurs, but looked into it and apparently Austria disbanded their Pandurs right before the war. For that reason, I ended up replacing the Pandurs with Jaegers, and I figured Austria also has Grenzers which should give them some pretty great light infantry options.
I was curious after this game is complete and if it has success and you’re done with the fixes, would you add more nations, such as the Ottoman Empire or Sweden
can you also make it compatible to mac please? and fire and manuver as well. I signed up for early access but lost it all due to an incompatible platform
Hello armchair historian i was wondering if you can make a swedish part or plan it for the future cause the swedish fought agaist russia and i think Britain also.
@@Gallic_GabagoolGriffin said that if the game is succesful they plan to add other theatres (like the French and Indian War and the Carnatic Front) and countries, so maybe Sweden is likely
It’s going to be really interesting to see how well terrain elevation works to effect fire and movement. I see mainly flat areas depicted so far. Also units are firing through other friendly units and even their own ranks, which made me wonder about the terrain problem as objects drawn (spites) rather than rendered in 3d (polygons) often have the disadvantage of having no physical presensce for the program to identify as a blocker. No physics engine so to speak.
Hey Fresh! Valid concerns. The bulk of the maps are going to appear flat, but I will have peaceable hills I can place down which will increase unit range and block LOS from shooting through hills. We are also going to prevent the rear ranks of regiments from firing so it's only the front two, and will look more realistic. There's definitely some limitations in doing the terrain in 2d, but it's allowed us to make progress on this project a lot quicker and we can consider moving everything to 3d if we're able to work on another game after this.
I can see that friendly units can shoot over each other like in cossacks3. I don’t think that is a good idea. Game looks fantastic but that aspect could be more polished and being more realistic by that
Also austria uses the cossacks as well. there is the dedicated 7 years war game on steam for austria they do use the cossack corps as well maybe austria should have that as well but not as good as russia's?
Do you plan to bring Poland and Sweden in because ofe Caroleans,Drabants and Winged Husars ? Do you also plan to expand the Game into the Napoleonic Area
The developers say Sweden is likely if the game does well (but the Caroleans, as the tactics of Charles XII, were gone by some decades by the time of the 7 years war), but not Poland, since it wasn't involved in the war (also the Winged Hussars were obsolete by the time of the war and purely cerimonial. The game is focused on the 7 Years War, maybe in the future they'll do another game on the Napoleonic Wars.
Could I suggest some American Provencial troops, since they were also a big help for England, and also some Canadians for the French too. Also, will this game be on console?
Hi Colton! For now, this game is just based around the fighting in Europe. If we have the opportunity to do DLC, we can definitely add an American expansion. It will not be on console, unfortunately.
Don Cossack here. The key to the Don Cossacks and why we are commonly one of the most represented in Russian military history is because of our complete loyalty to the tsar. The Don are incredibly fearless horsemen and have been accredited to being some of the most brave Russian troops of all. What annoyed me with Fire and maneuver when it came to Cossacks was how easily they broke. The Don are THE most loyal Cossacks to the empire and the tsar/emperor or empress and have fought entirely to the death on many occasions. I believe that the Don should have an incredibly high morale, easily one of the highest in the game. The Germans also feared the Cossacks as they were seen as these barbarians with no rules who kill for fun which played heavily on their morale, I believe that like in total war, any units facing the senior Cossack cavalry should have decreased morale. EDIT: To put it simply Don Cossacks have higher morale due to historic loyalty to the empire. they should cause a morale debuff when near enemy infantry.
@ this may be difficult but I would love to see the Cossacks with randomized clothing. Since the Cossack regiments of the period wore their own clothing which was often multi colored. Also, if you could add the Don Cossack Crest which is a white stag on a blue field with a golden arrow and antlers as a Russian emblem that would be fantastic.
@@Elias-f2w6e Hey Elias, we actually do have it so the cossacks have randomized clothing between regiments. We don't have a system right now though that makes it so each individual soldier within a regiment has their own clothes. As for flags, we're still adding more and I'd be open to adding a cossack symbol in! :)
A lot of the decisions to split up trees was based on wanting each country to have their own unique tree setup. So Austria gets 3 trees, Britain gets 2 medium trees, Russia gets 5, France gets 1, and Prussia gets 1 large and 1 small tree. I think splitting up the Austrian trees into 3 also better reflects how multi-national their empire was.
Don Cossacks were lancers with very long lances (like double the size of other nations, this was so they would hit first against the very talented cavalry of the polish and ottomans), they were noted by the Caucasians as being formation or regular type cavalry (the lance was their first and last style of war, they were lost in a context in which it was hard to utilise, it should be noted that in fact cossacks did have firearms and to their Napoleonic foes were noted for pinning down retreating or isolated formations with irregular dismounted skirmishing, often for hours (or overnight), until regular troops arrived to clear up the pinned down force (who usually just surrendered, having already been exhausted by the harassment and not looking for a last stand), these light tactics were probably learned from the Caucasians, but doesn't seem to have impressed them much, probably because they knew exactly how to slip away despite specialisation on stopping that), though of course to europeans they were very light cavalry particularly feared for harassment. I don't know about the other units, but cossacks were know for firearm use, and those in the Kubanian region preferred swords and irregular warfare. Settled Hussars sound very interesting, I'll have to look them up. The morale choice for the Russians is correct, they had a very specific military culture and national attitude at this time, their soldiers were brave and pious, but they had more will than expertise or ridged discipline, their troops were semi-professional (one thing of interest would be how many supplies they use as Russian regiments were largely self-sufficient, on campaign this meant less but they could resupply themselves with raw materials and then make what they needed themselves) and viewed themselves as fighting for a divinely mandated monarch in a far more literal and prominent way than other Europeans (though in most this was still the accepted Christian attitude towards kingly authority, and among the Austrians was prominent as well due to the history, or not, as this was a period of dynastic contention over the holy Roman empire).
Will the game feature a codex sort of feature the let's us read some of the historical context of these units and other aspects of the Seven Years War? I love it when games do that!
Would it also make sense for the austrian branch maybe crown lander tree to have bohemian section, it was bohemian troops after all that turned the tide a the battle of kolin and drove fredrerick out
So are drummers (etc.) and officers comming to game? I dont know why games are without them. Is it not historical ccurate? But its look great and i m hopping for it :)
Definitely seems like that would be good to cover next, along with improvements made to battles in general. I think I'll do a big battle dev log at the end of November or start of December.
I wonder if this game will ever grace the mobile scene or stay pc/console dominant, hopefully I won’t have to purchase a laptop to play this amazing game
bro you better make a DLC for this game that will be portugal and spain as they joined the 7 years war later also i can not wait to buy and play this, this game looks amazing
Hey Josh! Would love to get in some DLC eventually that brings in the American theater, the Swedish, and Iberia. Lots of cool ways we could expand things!
The french irish flags were the french cross of St Michael with the irish cross of St Patrick. The british would use the cross of st patrick later in the early 19th century. Also ths irisu fled english controled ireland. Not england.
Yeah I was just saying it looked like a British Union jack and thought it looked cool, thanks for the clarifications. Must've mispoke if I said the Irish fled England haha.
Would it be possible to add simple but short descrioptions over units so I dont have to compare each individual stat? Example of X unit: -better reload and accuracy -worse melee
Yeah I think there are definitely some UX improvements that could be made to help make the units clearer. We'll continue working on this in the coming months.
I would've loved to include those, but creating an entire archery system solely for the horse archers (who participated very little in the war) was just outside of the scope/budget.
@ you are of course correct. They were rare, expensive and brittle bits of kit. But they were fairly unique to austria’s army iirc. They don’t have to be a major part of the army. They could be a rare curiosity. It’s a flavor thing.
@@MarcoCaprini-do3dq you’re probably right on that point. I remember them from empire total war which was pre-napoleonic. That’s probably where I got 18c from.

Thank you for the reply.
Can you confirm different units like canon will not fire through say an infantry unit in front of it?
im pumped
I can see that friendly units can shoot over each other like in cossacks3. I don’t think that is a good idea. Game looks fantastic but that aspect could be more polished and being more realistic by that
Also austria uses the cossacks as well. there is the dedicated 7 years war game on steam for austria they do use the cossack corps as well maybe austria should have that as well but not as good as russia's?
never thought i'd see french and british units in this game. I havent seen those before
Is there going to be a North American theater for the French and British? I think that and maybe an Indian campaign too would be really cool
If the game is succesful they might add it in the future
Those colors remind me of those lead painted 40mm toy soldiers.
I think I like the aesthetic but at the end I really hope the AI is good
I feel like veterancy should be a perk instead of a unit in the tech tree, this veterancy can unlock cosmetics like Minden Roses
Thanks for this!!!!!
Thanks for watching Nicolas!
EDIT:
To put it simply
Don Cossacks have higher morale due to historic loyalty to the empire.
they should cause a morale debuff when near enemy infantry.
Noted! :)
I’m curious, why was the foreign recruit tree split?
A lot of the decisions to split up trees was based on wanting each country to have their own unique tree setup. So Austria gets 3 trees, Britain gets 2 medium trees, Russia gets 5, France gets 1, and Prussia gets 1 large and 1 small tree. I think splitting up the Austrian trees into 3 also better reflects how multi-national their empire was.
I wish this upgrade mechanic was in the TW Empire
Thank you for the info about the cossacks!!
Will the game feature a codex sort of feature the let's us read some of the historical context of these units and other aspects of the Seven Years War? I love it when games do that!
I'm really hoping we've got the time to do that. At the very least, we can include some brief descriptions on all the units.
Keep cooking
horses tails looks weird almost like they are riding raptors to battlefield
Would it also make sense for the austrian branch maybe crown lander tree to have bohemian section, it was bohemian troops after all that turned the tide a the battle of kolin and drove fredrerick out
So are drummers (etc.) and officers comming to game? I dont know why games are without them. Is it not historical ccurate? But its look great and i m hopping for it :)
Irish fusiliers and Grenadiers! YES!!!!!!!
Aye!
Question: will portugal be a faction in the game?
For the base game no, but if it's succesful they plan to add more countries and fronts, so maybe in the future
@MarcoCaprini-do3dq thank you
Will the Spanish and the Portuguese be added later?
They said yes if the game is succesful
Have there already been thoughts about how much it will cost?
Next devlog: Artillery?
Definitely seems like that would be good to cover next, along with improvements made to battles in general. I think I'll do a big battle dev log at the end of November or start of December.
@@armchairhistoryinteractive2046 Awesome - looking forward to it.
You have the two units Austria excels in Grenzer infantry and Hungarians, they’re not soldiers, they’re just Hungarians
This is peak dude
Thanks man!
I give this game the emperor's new groove meme
bruh - I CANT WAIT
👍
Why do the horses have kangaroo tails? 11:00
the austrian artillery only game!
I wonder if this game will ever grace the mobile scene or stay pc/console dominant, hopefully I won’t have to purchase a laptop to play this amazing game
Maybe you could give horse granadier granades but make them worse at meelee
will there be a multiplayer?
No, at least for the main game
Bro, I just saw this, How much would the game be in release?
bro you better make a DLC for this game that will be portugal and spain as they joined the 7 years war later also i can not wait to buy and play this, this game looks amazing
Hey Josh! Would love to get in some DLC eventually that brings in the American theater, the Swedish, and Iberia. Lots of cool ways we could expand things!
i dont know if i like the black outline around the in game troops particularly the cavalry
Maybe horse grenadiers be more of a shock cavalry and curasiarsbe more like a cavalry the has the higher moral and stats in the fight longer
On which engine you are developing this game
Will it be able on Android devices?
hope you add sweden
The french irish flags were the french cross of St Michael with the irish cross of St Patrick. The british would use the cross of st patrick later in the early 19th century.
Also ths irisu fled english controled ireland. Not england.
Yeah I was just saying it looked like a British Union jack and thought it looked cool, thanks for the clarifications.
Must've mispoke if I said the Irish fled England haha.
Can we have smoke effects stay longer on the battlefield?
We definitely want to up the smoke effects, expect an update on that closer to release when we start polishing visuals!
i'm assuming no multiplayer campaign?
Maybe they'll add it in the future
Como consigues dinero?
And girandoni air rifles for Austria?
The rifle was not invented until ~15 years after the Seven Years War.
@kabinettskriegeblog738 thank you!
Will we see Sweden in the future?
If the game is succesful it's likely
On which game engine you are developing this game sir??
??
Should add colonial infantry for the French, that would have like… Quebecois and Acadians militia and Troupes de la Marine.
For now, the game is just set in Europe. When/if we add an American campaign we can definitely add in native and colonial troops!
Would it be possible to add simple but short descrioptions over units so I dont have to compare each individual stat?
Example of X unit:
-better reload and accuracy
-worse melee
The history of the formation or unit type would be interesting as it is hard to research in the english language.
Yeah I think there are definitely some UX improvements that could be made to help make the units clearer. We'll continue working on this in the coming months.
Se me hace un poco complicado seguir tu tutorial me confundí con el árbol tecnologia.
Not gonna lie I was hope that the russian tree to include the step nomad horse archer and native troops.
I would've loved to include those, but creating an entire archery system solely for the horse archers (who participated very little in the war) was just outside of the scope/budget.
Can you port it to mobile
I saw no windbusches for the austrians.
The Airguns were pretty rare , and even if it was effective , was too little to change a war
@ you are of course correct. They were rare, expensive and brittle bits of kit. But they were fairly unique to austria’s army iirc. They don’t have to be a major part of the army. They could be a rare curiosity. It’s a flavor thing.
@@freshfresh5205 ahh , true
Maybe it could be a special thing a regiment has , af the cost of reduced numbers
If I rember correctly the Airguns appeared at the end of the 18th century, this game has an earlier time frame
@@MarcoCaprini-do3dq you’re probably right on that point. I remember them from empire total war which was pre-napoleonic. That’s probably where I got 18c from.
will this be compatible with steam deck
I'm really not sure yet, good question. We'll look into testing it on the Steam deck early next year.
You should release this on mobile
